Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Not having a father in my life I've looked to RUclips to fix a lot of stuff. Now its time to fix my generator and you sir have stepped to the plate to show me what I need to do
Great straightforward and clear instructions. We have been without power for three days and the cord broke last night. Wonderful blessing to have the generator running again this morning.
Met this video 11 years counting.. Thank you very much.. saved me money today..
Same here. I had been calling the mechanic but he decided not to show for over 4 days. I later decided to use RUclips, glad I did
After 9 years, this video is still saving lives around the world. Thanks man!
I live in Panama. Its about 10 pm. Its rainy season. Power is knocked out by a storm. Pull cord on my generator broke on the first pull. What a lousy night! The next day I watched your video. FANTASTIC! Fixed it minutes thanks to you. Now I'm ready for the next black-out. Thank you!
I've been afraid to try to replace starter cords after trying a long time ago and failing. This video was a huge help and I was able to follow it and get my Kawasaki generator fixed just in time for a rare ice storm here! Thank you!
26th Dec 2021
Lagos, Nigeria.
You've just saved our boxing day celebrations.
Tried for about an hour to fix the generator but your video helped me tremendously and I was able to fix it in less than 4mins.
Kudos!
Man, 6 years later and this video still saves people money all around the world! Thanks man!

8 years later and it's still saving people's money... Thanks men
23rd of August 2021 and you're still saving lives. Saved me so much stress because my mechanics been out of town.
Wow.... Thanks so much. Can't believe a 3years old video is what bailed me today. The 4times anticlockwise rotation is the trick.
I spent several minutes fixing my generator broken cord last week, I got tired and left it until the next day. However i watched this video before going back to it and I fixed in less than 3 minutes. Thank you for uploading the educative material.
This just happened to me today at work, we're working on a house off the grid and our generator pull cord broke, we needed heat in the house and didn't have a new pull cord so took the cover off and wrapped the broken rope around the pulley and spun it and got it going, went to Lowe's tonight and bought two new pull cords and tomorrow morning will reassemble it and you really made it simple and I shouldn't have any problems now. Thank you very much and I will remember this tomorrow morning.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a great public service creating and posting this video was. High winds and power outages are predicted in my area today and, wouldn't you know it, when trying to start up my generator a couple of weeks ago, the cord broke. Now the generator is back up and running, thanks to this video, and I have peace of mind.
8 years later and still saving lives.
Every description inch perfect
Thank you.
This is the 3rd time ive had to replace my Generac starter cord. Thank god for this video. No way im ever figuring this out on my own. :) THANKS

Thanks man; 11 years and this just saved me in the middle of the night
Thanks for the tutorial! Generator pull rope broke and we needed it going due to the ice that just hit Arkansas a couple of days ago. Much appreciated!
The section on tensioning up the pull spring on a generator pull cord in the pull cord replacement video was a life saver - thank ya much
I'm 70, female and a tiny gal..your video was just what I needed....thank you SO much! A big hug to you from Colorado! I think mice got our cord or just useage, but whatever, you did the trick. :)
Sir I am currently surviving the aftermath of hurricane Ida and last night I went to pull my generator and I had this issue. Thanks to your very detailed video I was able to fix the generator in 30 minutes and my mom now can have her morning cup of coffee! Bless your heart and soul and I pray that you win the lottery!
Thanks for sharing!
10years after this is still very helpful 🙏🏾 thank you 🙏🏾
Woww 8 years video just saved me alot of money 😌thank you this video was very helpful...
2019 and your video is going strong!
Thank you so much for this video. I always watch it every time I have to fix my generator rope.
How I wish I could give a LIKE as often as I watch it.🤗🤗🤗
I love this video because it was straight to the point, very well explained.
Thank-you for this helpful video - used this technique on my snowblower today and it's up an running again. Couple of notes: 1) I sourced 5mm rope from the local Dollar store; 2) I can't stress enough your point about lubrication! It made for one-pull starts and a super smooth recoil; and 3) I found my snowblower required 6 turns to properly tension the spring, unlike the generator's 4 (others might want to take note that you will need to do it a couple of times to find the right sweet spot for your engine type).
When we were testing pulling the rope before we reinstalled the recoil assembly it looked like the rope we had was not stiff enough and not going to work without getting tangled up. Once we put it vertically onto the generator though it worked just fine. Just wanted to leave a note about this in case anyone else thinks they got the wrong kind of rope. We used a basic standard "5" rope from Walmart that can be used for anything.
Thanks for this video. It was a life saver!
I was clueless how to fix it and I borrowed it from my brother in law. Now I don't have to return it to him broken. Thanks for your time sir.
Thanks for making this video! My pull cord broke on my pressure washer and I would've never figured out how to fix it.
Great video man, no shit, just the info everyone needs, thanks for posting
10 years later and I just fixed my generator cord thanks to u 🙏
Another superb video by donyboy73. Why do I bother watching other videos on the same subject as Don produces the absolute best instructional videos for small engines On RUclips.
Thank you for this very clearly explained and well thought out video. We are about to experience a major snowstorm here on the east coast and as I was trying to start my generator to make sure it was ready to go, the cord broke. I went and bought some new cord but I was stressing about how to go about replacing it. Your video is excellent. Again, thank you!
+Toby Fairchild you're welcome, make sure you are subscribed
very good & thorough vid - now if mine only started that easy!
Short term memory has me coming back to this video. Thank you sir
Thanks for making this video. My pull cord broke today. Now I know the exact way to replace it. Great tip on the lubricant.
I came in search of this idea. Thanks for perfect video
*Thanks! This helped a lot I fixed my pull cord with help from my neighbor and this video!*
Although a simple repair, I find that its always nice to reference the right way before overlooking something. Your video was very helpful. Thank you.
Pulled the cord out while in the middle of the boonies... this vid helped out big time
Just thought I'd let you know that you made a difference here in Puerto Rico today. As one of the citizens that hasn't had electricity for 89 days since the hurricane, it was a matter of time before the pull cord would give out since I'm not the only person in my home that turns on the generator. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been able to solve my problem. Thank you very much for taking the time to make such an easy to follow video. I've subscribed to your channel in the hopes you keep going
glad it helped Rafael, sorry to hear about your plight
Thanks man. The rotation while holding the string helped me get a tight wind again. Much appreciative of this video
Just want you to know that your video saved me so much time and money. I used paracord as the replacement btw and it works great
Thank you. This generator is costing me a small fortune.
Your explanation will knock this down some.
Thanks for sharing.

I did it!💪✌️🎉
Great idea to click on an add once in a while. I don't like adds much but I have been wanting to donate somthing as I appreciate all that Dony contributes and brings to the table - his abundantly generous spirit. Anyone - how can I do that?
I quit trying to repair/replace starter ropes 50 or more years ago. Your video made it look easy and it was. Thank you very much.

August 2021 you saved the day. Fixed my generator for $5. We ready for hurricane henri.
I missed the steps, came back to this video and it saved me again
Thanks so much for your video. We had a big snow, power out... Doing the hard start, the rope came out from the wheel and wrapped around the post. following your video made the whole difficult situation, much easier... thanks again.
Thank you for this video. I was happy with installing a new cord but I couldn't work out how to get the old bit of cord out of the pull handle. Watched your vid and now I know, and how easy it is once you know! My Karcher pressure washer is once again startable. Thanks again for taking the time to make the vid.
Thank you donyboy 73, your video helped me get our go-cart back on the track
How to thread a genie, I learned it from you. Thank you.
Thank you. You save my life today again. 27th of February, 2024
Thank you. This really helped me today.
Sadly after starting up the generator it started with an unfamiliar sound and then stopped. I'll have to eventually go to the workshop.
Thanks anyway, I learnt something new from you.
Thank you sir...great video...clear...concise and to the point...no filler or meat-by products...100% real deal 🙏👍👍👍
Thanks a whole lot from Nigeria.
Just fixed my generator with this video.
This video helped me fix my generator and save money. Thanks! 👍
You just saved my life
Thanks Donny! This video really save me bootee. After the big storm the power went out. Fished out the generator which has sat neglected for a few years. Very much like the one in the video. Pulled the starter cord and ARGHH, wango - it broke! I knew there was a procedure for changing it, but had forgotten the details. I also knew that if you started messing around too much, you might end up with a bigger problem - as in springs flying through the air and little clips going who knows where... Watched your excellent video X2. "Tis easy when you know how." You didactic style is excellent. Clear and straight forward - no extra BS or attitude. No matching rope handy and the roads are closed. Made do with a length of para cord. We be up and running!
Yo thanks for this. Simple and to the point. Saved me the time and money of having it done elsewhere. Appreciate it.
You, sir, deserve a medal. I have two young children and this excellent video saved the day. Thank you...
thanks lol
Thank you so much Sir.
Just fixed my generator rope by myself by going through your video. God bless you!

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou...
Your videos are extremely good and informative....I learn a little from each one I watch...great job
Great video, short and to the point. A big help. I will say ropes break because they get old not because people keep pulling on them. but thank you for making the video
Awesome video! Ive been doing this the hard way too long, Thank you.
The video is helpful even after 8 years, I have been waiting for the mechanic to fix the starting rope, but finally did it by myself following the video.
Just stumbled upon this greatness today. My rope cut yesterday and I had to get it done because the mechanics not around.
434 people apparently cannot follow the most basic and very clear instructions. Solid vid !
Thanks for always coming through... This has saved me a couple of times
Dony:
Been getting a lot of great help and info from your site and your many videos. Was able to handle quite a few needed maintenance projects here on Generac and Honda and Briggs. You are a real natural at explaining things very clearly. I am most grateful for all the effort. Will send what I can for donation ... and I send you all my best wishes and my appreciation.

Simple and straight to the point. Thank you Sir.
Thank you for the video! My husband has only one original equipment hand now, and his prosthetics aren't good for these types of smaller repairs so tasks like this sometimes fall to me. Your video made this quite easy for me to do.
Thank you. I just repaired my generator pull cord by myself. The video is so helpful
