The last thing I expected in this video was for John to receive literal spankings on the butt from a man yelling "You're a naughty boy, John." Still, an eye-opening video to say the least. A gun is not the solution to every problem like we tend to build it up as in our heads.
@@ericta9149 This video is fake and such a situation wouldn't happen in the first place, if I had a knife I wouldn't tackle someone, pin them down and try to stab them, I'd run up to them or however else I got close and stab them. @@IchigoKurosaki011 you're partly right. However, there may be an altercation that did not evolve into deadly threat while the gun weilder was on his feet. It may have been a shoving and shouting match at first. Once the first guy ends up on the ground from a sucker punch or a hard shove and the other guy sees his opportunity and decides to make it lethal, then you have a struggle for survival. There is no telling how you could end up in that situation, but I would rather be trained in how to come out of it alive than to assume it couldn't happen in one specific way.
@Warrior Poet, this is an amazing video! I have never seen any other instructor actually film and show us a no-holds-barred fight. Your opponent Brandon Davis was absolutely marvelous as well, and I am filled with respect for all three of you. I am so glad that you introduced all of us to Craig Douglas. Not sure if it's due to the years of training, the level of coolness, or a combination of the two... But John's reaction at 2:38 to the "BREAK!" was impressive. Acknowledged the moment of stress, with no flinching. Damn, it must feel good to be a gangster.
So I'm 240lbs, 5'11", just turned 40yrs old, run 2mi in just under 17min,...on a good day, can properly bench my body weight 10x, wrestled for 12yrs including college at a top tier D2 school, went on to coach for 4yrs after, took boxing for about a year in my teens as well as judo for about 6mos to help with wrestling, played soccer for 12yrs, thrower in track n field for 8yrs and won titles...so I'm in decent shape for 40 and have an athletic background that allows me physical confidence on the "streets". Well getting older I've taken more of a tactical weapons approach mostly with firearms. This type of training HAS to be hands down the absolute best real world scenario type training that can happen at the drop of a hat anywhere with anyone. What a great video to share John! You were one of my first firearm/tactical defense youtube subs when I started getting into this. You always find great places and people to sharpen your skills. Kudos my man. Very humble respectable man. #Curtsey 👍🤜🤛
"Both died, but John died first" Never felt so confuse about the positivity of a sentence. This resembles the type of fights you see on security cams and real life much more than the fancy shit some instructors teach. Very eye opening.
This is one of the best realistic training videos I've ever come across. I have been a martial arts instructor for a long time and wrestling coach plus bounced in a very active Bar for over a decade and enjoy fire arms training and shooting. The gentleman and his school is the most real civilian hand to hand combat situations I've seen.Think god someone has finally designed a real world martial arts class for today's real life situations. I hope your style spreads. No bullshit real life situations for people that care to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.. Truly great video both u. At 70, I couldn’t wrestle with anyone! For us “Elders” prevention is the best medicine, distance and the ability to put accurate fire on target is the next step.
But that’s part of life. That is exactly why if some idiot was “just threatening bodily harm for ‘fun’ , but didn’t ‘actually mean it’ “ got 17rds into them.... that shouldn’t be excessive force/manslaughter let alone murder. BUT I think you’re missing something. Craig refers to it as the Criminal Assault Paradigm. Not being Arnold Schwarzenegger will increase your chances of getting assaulted by a lot. After being selected though The Confrontation (Philip Quast is da man but not hating on Crowe LOL) happens. Guess at what range? Remember the Tueller Drill? 0-21ft can be covered in 1.5 sec. More likely range 7ft. The point of this is NOT to turn you into a UFC fighter but help you employ your tools at the range they will MOST likely be needed. Of course showing awareness and employing your weapon as a deterrent (or avoiding all together) is the ideal.. But again: why carry a gun in the first place? Don’t sell yourself short. Yes putting holes in paper on demand is fundamental. But learning and adapting from something like this is extremely valuable precisely because of said reality.
Rusty Shackleford I actually agree w/ you that a DA 38sp revolver is an under appreciated tool... but again the real questions are: how to employ it effectively and in what situation(s)? Yes weapons even up the game but In-fight weapons access is a PITA. That’s the point of this!!! Work through working against a resisting opponent. Hopefully the POS just runs irl (or ideally just doesn’t happen). However even if Mr Elder breaks a hip at least he has a chance of surviving shooting said POS in the taint. I’ll throw in an anecdote too. My grandfather lived to a lil over 70 (not 80 smoking *sigh*). Idk what Mr Elder’s medical history is but if my gramps can patrol a hilly property w a machete and 38... I think you have a decent shot of at least learning to roll/basic positions, doing “light” FoF drills etc and should the need arise yeah shoot BGs in the taint. This is NOT false encouragement like I said disparity of force is serious stuff. But survive and Live On (you too Mr Grib... er Rusty), even with a broken hip and ringing ears.
John - this was very educational and illuminating! Kudos to you for putting yourself in the ring with an MMA fighter. I don't think there are many RUclips channel 'stars' who would or could do that and do as well. This seems more like reality than the range theatrics we are often exposed to. Thank you brother!
That's awesome. Loved the kimura at the end (you would have easily finished a lesser trained person, most people can't roll out of a kimura like that).
Concealed carry has so many variables and this video shows how it doesn’t matter what or how you carry a gun and that violent situations aren’t like the moves where you’ll be able to pull out and fire. I appreciate this John.
This scenario should be among the top most concerning combative situations you could realistically encounter. Limited or no access to tools you have on your person, while simultaneously trying to prevent the aggressor from accessing his tools is the definition of high stress. Love the training, love the real world applications. Best self defense training I have yet to witness, ever... Keep it up, people need this.
The world needs more of this! MMA gyms tend not to train with weapons, tactical gun training tends view a gun as the end-all weapon, and most knife defense seems questionable and lacking in true sparring. I sincerely hope this catches on. Showing this at our MMA gym! BTW John, nice Jiu Jitsu work!
Anyone who carries a gun should watch and learn from this video. Bad situations turn into nightmares in a second. Train/knowledge is the answer to stay alive! Perfect video guys
Went to this guy’s class several years ago, and got partnered up with a former wrestler. I was embarrassed for 3 days. And exhausted at the end. I learned pray every day not to get wrapped up with a grappler.
Dude... I think this is my favorite WPS video... of all time. It's so much more realistic that the usual "gun guy videos". Well done. Thanks man, and God Bless.
2 out of 3 ain’t bad, but makes me think how important it is to train to win the first of 3 rather than the 3rd of 3. Much respect! Thank you for all your hard work, creativity and prayer that you put into making such an impact on our lives! Kudos!
".....the biggest thing you have to watch for is, THE SNEAK ATTACK!!!!!" Yay for that! Awesome video! Thank you John, Craig, and Brandon. Keep yourselves safe! Randy
I remember an old lesson I was taught in training that applies quite perfectly here. Essentially, a gun is only an advantage in a fight when you have distance between you and your adversary. If you're within physical contact distance (or even close to it) a knife can be every bit as dangerous. Another lesson this video teaches: try not to get into fist fights with pro MMA fighters.
One of the best videos I have seen. It really shows you why just having a gun on you doesn't mean everything. Hats off to John, even though he died twice it was still crazy to see he even stood a chance. Most people would've been dead from the start.
Yet another reason for a multiple "Like" button! Great video John. Give Craig our thanks. I had not heard of him until this series you have done with him, but he is a very good instructor...even if his hair has proven to be lacking :)
I've watched this video about four times before and always checked out at the outro. I can't believe I've missed the comical gem this entire time. Great stuff, fellas. Thank you!
The human body is a work beyond comprehension. I saw a guy get stabbed and have like a power up and Hulk smash. I saw another guy take multiple hits with a wheel wrench to the head and beat the other guy to a pulp. It's not over until it's over. Great video!
This video gave me heartburn. Thanks for showing how being attacked really looks like and how martial arts can save your life. Usually your assailant won't be a UFC fighter.

@@erichood3169 I am assuming that you had ran a scenario based training exercise, where you had to grade, qualify, and re-certification officers or newly hired officers? Because equipment fails then you are left with making due... I can remember shooting on a outdoor range on a windy day. The dirt would blow into your face and eyes, even with glasses on. You had to figure it out and deal with it. It cause a few of us to invest in some better glasses. Better to catch a bad bounce in practice then in the field. All I was saying!

This makes me realize what a small/tight circle of warrior poets we are. Went to school with Brandon and trained with John as a contractor. Well done sirs!
I like his answer to being asked if he's ready "we shall see" spoken like someone who's actually been in some unpleasant situations. Win or not, all fights can get you hurt.
This has got to be one of, if not, the best video I've seen on WPS. It really illustrates the training and mindset John has. Having just done most likely an all day course and then to be able to go into a training scenario like this and fight from a deficit shows why he is one of the people who's advice I trust.
Looking at the appendix position it seems easy to conceal, except if you are balled up then it is essentially locked in place for both parties, possible for a similar video showing different carry positions?
Appendix is also an easier position to maintain control, if it's on your sides or, god forbid, small of back, then by giving, or getting taken your back, you've pretty well given them access to your gun, nonetheless, would be interesting to see.
I’m more worried that in a situation like this the bad guy only has to get the gun out enough to stick a quick finger in the trigger guard and blow out a femoral artery... it would be interesting to see a 2:30-3:30 carry position scenario. I don’t know anyone who could survive this type of fight that caries in the small of their back.
Appendix is definitely much easier to defend especially if you aren't already on your back. In the first one I was thinking about striking options for the person on top but it's not worth getting shot. Although in that position he could move around and knee John in the head if he was so inclined. That's a devastating move and it's been proven that it can cause massive damage to the spine and head. Tim Kennedy wouldn't allow him to turtle though because he calls it old Jiu Jitsu and you only use it if you want to die. An opponent can grab at your face try to gouge your eyes etc in order to get you to uncurl from that position. All in all John did great and I agree it would be nice to see fights from other carry positions as well as different stages of a fight.
@@idahogunslinger263 "the bad guy only has to get the gun out enough to stick a quick finger in the trigger guard and blow out a femoral artery" I pointed out in John's last video (about choosing a gun with a safety) the advantages of actually having a manual safety AND a grip safety as is on 1911's. You just made another good point for a reason to do so.
gb93669 I have yet to see someone carry a 1911 appendix... maybe you’re comfortable with it maybe not, that’s up to you. I’m not comfortable carrying any loaded weapon in proximity of femoral arteries or anything that I want to keep safe while alive...
This is the type of martial art i've been looking for, kickboxing , grappling and weapon based like kali. This one is awesome, no fancy stuff like kung fu. Very straight to the point.
Exactly. I cringe every time someone says "I can rack a round drawing just as quick" or " I want that extra second so I don't make a mistake". Then there's the revolver guys that think capacity doesn't matter because they can reload in under a second. Real gun fights don't happen like a day on the range fools.
@@MrCrumb34 I pack a revolver here and there, I would never say capacity doesn't matter and really don't want to reload it in a fight but can. However it's better than an empty hand.
Julian P not a revolver guy myself but one thing it does have going for it is that its tough to put a revolver out of action during a grappling altercation like this, where as an auto will go out of battery easily
It's important to remember that in a close range or grappling situation, just because you get a shot off, doesn't mean it's instantly game over you've won. Very often the bad guy doesn't realize he's been shot and can still stab, maim, or kill before the wounds from the shots are able to stop him.
@@BalrogUdun - It really is. I never truly appreciated that until starting BJJ. I had one really major groin injury just after I started sparring (my academy requires adults to attend 30 classes before sparring). Although I realized I had a major injury at the time (I felt/heard it rip in 3 places - pop pop pop). But I didn't feel any real pain for nearly an hour. I was so jacked on adrenaline. In a street fight, I'm not sure I would have paid it much attention if my life was on the line (although obviously, it would have seriously limited me). Took 10 weeks to heal. I see some other commentators mentioning that a (insert caliber here) will do the trick. Well, maybe it would - but it really depends on where it hits. It is possible to drop a person like a sack of potatoes with a subsonic 0.22LR if you get a headshot in the right place. Surely a large caliber hollow-point will stop someone more frequently - but it is utterly amazing how long someone can go sometimes after a fatal wound.
That is my favorite of your training videos thus far. Great encouragement to get more training. Thank you for being willing to make these and for being a clean video channel that I can, without hesitation, recommend to anyone. God Bless!
Great job. This looks really tough especially against a cage fighter. I always carry a knife and gun. Unfortunately getting older I don't think I would fare very well against a guy like that. My only hope is having a good awareness and having time to dictate the fight. Thanks for sharing this video it really made me think.

position above is a fairly common position to get into after being taken down by a typical rugby tackle or double leg takedown..a small fixed blade knife at your ankle via a sheath would be really useful in the event for a quick deploy while the attacker is trying to stop you accessing your gun..
Nothing but straight RESPECT!!!!! To all three of you, that was great seeing the scenario of a close quarters application of a knife/gun fight!!! SALUTE!!
I appreciate that you're taking the time to hone your complete warrior. Too many gun guys "would just shoot em" that's great until you can't access your weapon...
LOVE this video. The only thing I would change to make it more realistic is to talk to both individuals separately "I am giving you a (insert force multiplier). Your opponent will have a weapon as well, but you won't know what it nor where it is until you get into the fight." That will add the element of uncertainty that exists in a weaponized environment. You don't know whether they're carrying a gun, a knife, pepper spray, etc. You don't know what it is unless they reach for it. TOTAL AND UTTER CHAOS!!!
I’ve thought before that, if someone is close with a weapon already out, my best option wouldn’t be to occupy at least one of my hands in going for a tool of my own. Be better off to use both hands to stop and (hopefully) gain control of their already deployed weapon.

Easily one of the best videos from you John. This is exactly why I keep coming back for more. You remind us that it's not just about the tool but the entire mindset.
John Lovell needs to go on the Joe Rogan podcast
Hell yes
Agreed
YES!!
@J80 Oh shove off Joe is a reasonable guy and he's willing to let people actually debate with him. He's a moderate leftist at worst and an independent at best and if you can't get along with someone like that life is going to be tough for you.
Joe won't let Christians on his show
Not every instructor is willing to be felt as a normal human being and risk losing, John you got my respect ooosssss
The last thing I expected in this video was for John to receive literal spankings on the butt from a man yelling "You're a naughty boy, John."
Still, an eye-opening video to say the least. A gun is not the solution to every problem like we tend to build it up as in our heads.
14:08 i was laughing my ass off cause i was about to click another video when it happened
Craig is probably one of the funniest human beings on the face of the planet.
@73Corbin Have you attended Craig's ECQC?
@@ericta9149 This video is fake and such a situation wouldn't happen in the first place, if I had a knife I wouldn't tackle someone, pin them down and try to stab them, I'd run up to them or however else I got close and stab them. That's even weirder though, how did the knifeman get the gunman on the floor in the first place? He had his knife in his hand out already but if the dude with the gun didn't see the guy coming he'd be dead already, but instead gets tackled. Did the knifeman get him down before he could draw his gun? But then why not just stab him??? This video is exactly how those karate/capoeira twats like to think this would happen. It wouldn't, they'd be full of lead.
You are all SO GENEROUS to share this with us!
Not sure if it's due to the years of training, the level of coolness, or a combination of the two...
But John's reaction at 2:38 to the "BREAK!" was impressive.
Acknowledged the moment of stress, with no flinching. Damn, it must feel good to be a gangster.
not even a blink, was pretty impressed.
"Both died, but John died first"
Never felt so confuse about the positivity of a sentence.
This resembles the type of fights you see on security cams and real life much more than the fancy shit some instructors teach. Very eye opening.
Really good exposure for everyone who is willing to be a learner, no flashy media, no background music, no titles, pure realism awesome content
And putting credibility on the line, humbling approach
I think John Lovell needs to be the new face of Dos Equis XX.
he is clearly the most interesting man alive.
It's cool to see a video where John is the student. I'm so used to seeing you teach things it was pretty cool to see how you are as the student.
That's how it happens, fast, hard, and out of no where.
Someone needs to turn this into a new sport.
Agreed!
Where do I sign up?
I was crying at the ending lmao. In all seriousness this is one of the most eye opening videos I've ever watched on how a real attack would play out. Great video I could watch this all day, although I'm sure you couldn't do this all day you both looked smoked even after the first one lol.
"you can't do this to me, i have a youtube channel!!" i lost my coffee lmao
Being my 60's I still remember how quick a person can "run outta' gas", no matter what shape you are in!
Today, my tank gives me a minute and a half max. Gotta' end it quick!
Great video!
Tried doing a little wrestling 10 years ago in my 40s, ran out of gas really quick. Do not have that young capacity anymore.
@@mikefisher2673 Mike, I think when we hit 40 there's something that happens to guy? Seriously, for me 40 was weird? The one that really happens is the clock speeds up! Lol! Few minutes later we're 50, so on and so forth!
I remember a few minutes ago I turned 62. Next monthe I'll be 67!
Best to ya' Sir!

I’m just too dang old for this crap. Too old to take an ass whoopin... main reason I carry everyday.
@@alpha6tango860 Exactly!!!!
At 70, I couldn’t wrestle with anyone! For us “Elders” prevention is the best medicine, distance and the ability to put accurate fire on target is the next step.
Sure you can, power is a choice.
Yall are doing great things and I'm glad to be apart of this this is history!!
HAHAhaha
“you can’t do this to me I have a RUclips channel!!”
I really love seeing this side of the fight!!
That ending was one of the best I've ever seen on a RUclips Channel. Absolutely fantastic.
This is definitely the most interesting video I've seen in a long while. It's realistic and a reminder that awareness and control is key.

Awesome to see John not only as an instructor but as a humble learner
Thank you!
"Your'e such a naughty boy John!" The end took a weird Sanduskyish turn.
Lmao Sandusky 😂
I was gonna say Bowmeister but hey yours works cx
The human body is a work beyond comprehension. I saw a guy get stabbed and have like a power up and Hulk smash. I saw another guy take multiple hits with a wheel wrench to the head and beat the other guy to a pulp. It's not over until it's over. Great video!
Best vid ever! Definitely the most realistic I have seen BRAVO!!
At last. Real world training. Thank you all. fantastic job.
Awesome John!
This video gave me heartburn. Thanks for showing how being attacked really looks like and how martial arts can save your life. Usually your assailant won't be a UFC fighter.
One of the most interesting and educational videos i have watched in a long time. Would love to see more similar videos in the future. Keep up the great work!
I like that John is really giving it all he’s got. Keeping the intensity up.

Great video. Having spent 22 years as a cop I know this is how cops NEED to do train but most don’t. Just learning/practicing the basics of fighting with the legs to control an opponent can save their lives. Keep up the great work!
Great video - nice example John of why we all need more than one method of training. Thanks
Def one of the best channels for self defense tips. Nothing like real life training but great for what it does which is tips and advise. Keep up the great work.
Awesome video! Nice rolling guys. Thanks for sharing.
Man, that looked intense. It goes to show how much situational awareness counts for, so you don't end up in a position like that.
Awesome stuff i think this is the first time ive seen some genuinely realistic knife training with live resistance.
If the gun and the knife are fake, and you lay in a corner on your back, with no shoes on and someone tells you that a man is going to lay on top of you and the man walks over and lays on top of you, and then someone yells go,, I work with firearms every single day. Everyone on this post has lost their damn minds. You have more of a chance of winning the Lottery 10 times before this situation was realistic.

This video is spot on... 1) If it can it will 2) If you can think of it, so can they 3) If you can hurt them, they can and will hurt you 4) Every move has a counter move... Only truth is that if you want to be prepared, you must prepare... Loved the video... Please for the love of all that we hold to our hearts, make more Videos...
This makes me realize what a small/tight circle of warrior poets we are. Went to school with Brandon and trained with John as a contractor. Well done sirs!
more of this please. nicely done
Absolutely love this video. I laughed so hard when the sneak attack went the way it did.
I like his answer to being asked if he's ready "we shall see" spoken like someone who's actually been in some unpleasant situations. Win or not, all fights can get you hurt.
Someone’s been hitting the weights. Keep up the good videos.
This has got to be one of, if not, the best video I've seen on WPS. It really illustrates the training and mindset John has. Having just done most likely an all day course and then to be able to go into a training scenario like this and fight from a deficit shows why he is one of the people who's advice I trust.
Your HAIR won each of those spars...the Sparta beard came second...👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks to all involved, really awesome of you to take time energy resources to make this.
@@idahogunslinger263 "the bad guy only has to get the gun out enough to stick a quick finger in the trigger guard and blow out a femoral artery"
I pointed out in John's last video (about choosing a gun with a safety) the advantages of actually having a manual safety AND a grip safety as is on 1911's.
Quite possibly the single greatest training video ever made!!!!!!!
Round 3 summary: John decapitates an attacker with a pocketknife
This is the type of martial art i've been looking for, kickboxing , grappling and weapon based like kali.
This one is awesome, no fancy stuff like kung fu. Very straight to the point.
Good luck to all those, "I don't need to carry with a round in the chamber" guys. This video really makes me miss Jiu Jitsu.
Exactly. I cringe every time someone says "I can rack a round drawing just as quick" or " I want that extra second so I don't make a mistake". Then there's the revolver guys that think capacity doesn't matter because they can reload in under a second. Real gun fights don't happen like a day on the range fools.
@@MrCrumb34 ugh, don't get me started on revolver guys. Revolvers are range toys now.
and yet he still had to rack it multiple times because it was out of battery.....
This video has so much solid advice and comedic gold! Well done sir!
"An entangled gunfight is an interdisciplinary problem"
one that not nearly enough people train.
There is absolutely nothing better than seeing guys beat on John. Love you. Love your channel. Love your philosophy.
It's important to remember that in a close range or grappling situation, just because you get a shot off, doesn't mean it's instantly game over you've won. Very often the bad guy doesn't realize he's been shot and can still stab, maim, or kill before the wounds from the shots are able to stop him.
josh48315 adrenaline is a bitch like that.
You can be dam sure that a hollow point 40s&w or bigger is going to stop the other guy.
357 kind of flies in the face of that.
l would say lf you hit someone ln the torso with a hollow point, they’re done.
"You can't do this to me, I have a RUclips channel!" Lol
LOVE this video. The only thing I would change to make it more realistic is to talk to both individuals separately "I am giving you a (insert force multiplier). Your opponent will have a weapon as well, but you won't know what it nor where it is until you get into the fight."
That will add the element of uncertainty that exists in a weaponized environment. You don't know whether they're carrying a gun, a knife, pepper spray, etc. You don't know what it is unless they reach for it. TOTAL AND UTTER CHAOS!!!
Fighting is messy.
Fantastic video and even better work. Worth every minute of the watch
I’ve thought before that, if someone is close with a weapon already out, my best option wouldn’t be to occupy at least one of my hands in going for a tool of my own. Be better off to use both hands to stop and (hopefully) gain control of their already deployed weapon.
Now, I say that as someone who thinks a firearm is generally your best tool/type of protection
