      Hello Phantom Shipmates. All is well. I arrived at my home port of La Rochelle France today, 27 July. I did not film the passages between Norway and home because I have already filmed many coastal, port hopping passages, and I didn’t think it would be very interesting for anyone except me. More adventures are already in planning. I’ll share those with you when they firm-up a bit. To recap this adventure just completed (France-Iceland-Norway and return home via the English Channel-EU side):
      4740 NM sailed
      97 days from date of departure to date of return home
      28 port calls
      8 countries visited
      The only mechanical break-down on the boat was the Raymarine remote control that I was wearing around my neck. The spring-type battery contacts inside the control broke. I got home the normal way - pushing buttons on the instrument panel in the cockpit.
      Particular highlight: meeting Erik the Viking in Norway
      Particular lowlight: spending 7 full days on the small German island of Sylt due to highly unfavorable winds.
      Will not do again: go to the eastern end of the English Channel. Coming back home to France against prevailing Westerly winds and strong tidal currents was really, really tough.
      Would love to do again: Spend more time in Norway. I found the ‘middle section’ of Norway (called Helgoland) just as interesting/beautiful as the Northern ‘famous’ section called Lofoten.

      Glad you are safe. I would still like to have seen some of your journey, how you tackled the head wind and currents. It might not sound much to you but to a lake sailor it's very interesting. I would love to sail with you if you ever fancy taking a phantom stowaway onboard!

Certainly understand your "why" of not putting out new videos recently, just know that many of us watch your channel because it's a rare one that is pure sailing without all the drama and clickbait. While you may see a decline in viewership, I think your fanbase is better than the big sailing channels because of the pureness you provide with your videos. Fair winds and following seas.

    I don't want to sound like a sycophant, I really don't, but these videos are great. It's not just the solo sailing done with genuine humility - I am a solo sailor myself and I remember a video years ago in which Patrick said on arriving at a pontoon, 'if someone offers help, take it' (common sense maybe but more often than not the opposite of what people actually do) - it is also the wit. Just terrific stuff, thanks.

      My first boat was a Bavaria 40. Very, very comfortable and easy to sail, but not very fast. My second boat was a much smaller 'rocket' called a Bongo, but very, very uncomfortable. This boat is at least 50% faster than the Bavaria, and much, much more comfortable than the Bongo. There is no ideal profile for a boat. You have to score on a scale --- comfort, speed, affordability --- and apply that score against the type of sailing you want to do (day coastal sailing, trans-oceanic, etc.). The perfect boat does not exist.

      Thanks Ray. All is well.
      I'm struggling to find something new/interesting to film. I recently sailed 600 miles up and down the French coast, but I just don't think viewers would find port hopping along a European coastline very interesting.
      I think viewers are growing a bit tired of my 'format/style' of videos anyway. Less than 60% of my own subscribers watched my last two videos -- which I thought were major challenges sailing along the coast of Iceland and then 800 NM to Norway.
      So I think I'll give the GoPro a rest for a while, and try to think of something that viewers might genuinely find interesting.
      Thanks for asking.
      Patrick

      @@patricklaine6958 Hi Patrick. Thanks for your great videos. They inspire your audience because your style is authentic - be it in Iceland, Newfoundland, Azores or La Rochelle… I also remember your older Isabelle videos very well, and how they encouraged me years ago! So I hope you continue to inspire and use the camera! Thanks, and kind regards from Switzerland, sometimes from the North Sea ;-) Lukas

    Great video as always! Hope to see some more from the norwegian coast. Do you ever anchor out in a natural harbor?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  Год назад

      To be honest, not often. As a solo sailor, after a week or more at sea, the last thing I want is the 'solitude of a quiet anchorage'. I want to go to town, have a glass of wine with others in a restaurant, and chat with other sailors on the pontoon. But yes, at times I do anchor, but it is not my first choice.

    Whats happens when and if you sailed into a bad storm?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 месяцев назад +1

      There are many techniques for handling bad weather. First you reduce the amount of sail out (called reefing); if things worsen, you could run downwind with the storm for a day or two -- relieves much of the stress of high wind, but takes you way off course; or you could 'park' the boat at sea (called 'heaving to') ; or you could 'forereach' into the waves with minimal sail out -- and just advance at a very slow pace; and some would consider putting out one of the various forms of a sea anchor, to prevent the boat from being turned sideways by the waves. Thus, many solutions --- the right solution depends on the strength of the storm, the competence of the crew, and the type of equipment on-board.
