EP 38 Sailing Solo to Iceland Irish Port Calls

  • I sail from France to Ireland --- with no specific destination in mind! I cross the entrance to the TSS and to my regret, try to give way to the big cargo ships. NOTE: ENGINE ON OR OFF DOES NOT CHANGE THE DYNAMIC OF THIS SITUATION. (Look at the geometry of the crossing.) I test the new staysail in strong winds -- with very favorable results. I blow a mooring ball approach, but arrive safely in two Irish ports.

    You could do exactly the same thing in or near a TSS next week and get completely the opposite response, heads you lose tails your lose, but as long and know one gets hurt we all win. There is as thing going on in the UK not to call channel 16 for radio checks, so I called last year on Ch 67 (having observed that it was being monitored) only to be told to use Ch 16 in future, I thanked them an consigned their feedback to the bin.
    My boat and I would struggle to make a left turn into a slip as tight as that, to much left prop walk when in reverse, Ive been to the end of a fairway turned 180 and then made a right turn into the slip before, works for me as I have no bow thruster and with throttle and rudder I can make smarter right turns.
    Great videos please keep it up, my docking sticks arrived from Amazon today, thanks to you. In the past I taped the bowline onto the pole with paper tape that snaps easily as the loop meets the cleat.
    Im planning around Ireland late this summer anti clockwise starting from Glasgow, just might have to order Chateauneuf du Pape in an Irish pub!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 лет назад +1

      Yes Keith, that final turn in was very tight due to the narrow fairway. I used a couple of bursts of bow thruster to shove the nose around, and I gave a good shot of reverse when about 45° into the berth to swing the stern a bit out to starboard (prop walk on my boat). As you suggest, every boat owner should go to a remote area of his marina, and practice tight maneuvers so he/she will know what tactics might help in a difficult situation.

    Follow the rules, maintain course and speed ... easy for them to say from the bridge of a 50K ton freighter logging 18 knots. It's kinda scary when you are in a small yacht and watching one of those things coming straight at you. Loved rail down footage with the new jib.

      Thanks Kevin. I didn't exactly shine on my crossing of the TSS (and I was cheating with the help of Volvo to shoot me across). Stressful place that doorway to the English Channel. As for the new staysail --- I think this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. :-)

    Great Patrick, I hope I wasn’t the only one who suggested you tidy away the fenders, but Isabelle looks much sweeter for it. Good idea to do the lazy jacks too, hadn’t thought of that one. Great comments on the TTS too. Take care and keep filming. Thank you

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 лет назад

      I hear you on the fenders……..and I guess I don't mind so much doing that if waters are calm and there isn't traffic around. I hate doing it when the deck is bouncing up and down in 2 meter waves, or when the local regatta club is leaving port and I need to maneuver with 20 other boats……. Guilty as charged. :-)

    Coming very late to your channel and am mezmerized by your focus on problem solving and practice….I know absolutely nothing about sailing except to say that as a retired corporate pilot there are some similarities in the two modes of trasportation….wind drift, crosswind control and weather…even heaving too is like landing in a strong crosswind. I was also reminded that your landfall in Dingle is the same bay that Lindbergh entered after a long night of deadreckoning over the ocean….looking forward to continuing to catch up to the rest of your videos….

Together with The French Man, Erik and Christian, you are helping me identify the type of sailing I want, and come up with ever better plan of how to get into buying, preparing and using a boat for challenging trips. Thanks for your honest report and the videos! We passed that exact TSS several times (once on our way to Ireland too). The cargo vessels are very attentive and most of the time they start to take measures pretty early. We never had any problems, except of that one single time when we had to take a reef in the middle of a lane within the TSS with 35+kn of wind; but also then, the cargo vessels monitored the situation and we could get back to a 90° course after some minutes.

    17:30 - "Tight fit here." That seems like an understatement. That fairway looked VERY narrow. I thought for sure you were going to whack one of those pulpits on the starboard side - a lesser man (me) would have! Thanks for another great sail!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 лет назад +1

      It was very, very tight. I had my head right over the stern corner of my boat to ensure I would clear those others.......a bit stressful for sure. Fortunately there was very little wind. :-)

    • @pitterpit9964
      @pitterpit9964 5 лет назад

      @@patricklaine6958 Would you consider to drive backwards (stern first) into the slip an easier solution or does that depend even more on prop walk?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 лет назад +1

      My boat is equipped with a sail drive, rather than a conventional shaft and prop, so prop walk is MUCH, MUCH less of a concern (the prop is located much further forward). My boat backs beautifully, and stops very precisely, and I love to reverse in --- from time to time. The difficulty with reversing in when solo is that once you come to a stop, you have to get a line over the cleat on the pontoon, and then drive forward to pin yourself against the finger. It's not always easy getting the line over the cleat from the stern (when solo). It can be quite a reach/lasso, and I have davits and a bimini frame that interfere with freedom of movement. Thus, if you are delayed in getting the line over the cleat (for any reason), the boat will drift into the neighbor. Reversing is an excellent technique for boats with crews where another person can lasso the cleat on the pontoon, but doing it single handed can be a challenge at times.

    • @pitterpit9964
      @pitterpit9964 5 лет назад

      @@patricklaine6958 Very valid point I did not think about, because I do not have single handed experience. That's why I thought to bring this question up to a well experienced starfighter pilot very able to fundementally explain the why or why not. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind way to explain things - though started with a crew I might find myself in a situation, where the fellow crew member with whom I left port with, is for some reason hurt or not able to help while docking. And asking then would be a little late ;-)

      I can understand the Star Wars attraction --- it really did feel like something transplanted from another planet (much like the Faroes). They have a shark fin island just like An Tiaracht in the Faroes. :-)

    Brilliant! As ever. Solo sailing as it should be. Pretty quiet sail, as you will love it of course, but you are bound to get the odd curve ball on the way to Iceland, which you will handle with your usual aplomb. Always look forward to your videos, it’s always great when the advice pops up, now waiting for the next. Thanks. Fair winds.

      Many thanks Wynn. My good friend James (from Samingo Sailing' like to say, 'The best passage is one that is completely uneventful because it was planned properly, and well- conducted." Boring is indeed good!

    I didn't see a problem with that mooring ball. You didn't hit it or fall overboard. What's wrong with going around if you not in the position you hoped for. A little help with the mooring line is handy and not too expensive. Great hearing you not having to do without afternoon grog rations. 8-) Too bad they wouldn't let you play chicken with that tanker. Some people have no adventurous spirit. Happy sailing.

      My head was over the aft corner of the boat to ensure it cleared during the turn in. As you say, very tight!

      The Colregs don't help much for the entrance and exit of the TSS's. They just say to be extra vigilant. ;-)

      @@patricklaine6958 I try to contact the ship on the radio but they don't always answer, so it always remains a problem especially when single handed which is most of the time for me, in the Solent here you don't have much space, and you have the major ferries coming out from Portsmouth and Southampton at multiple angles and times
