    I listen to National Public Radio quite a lot here in the US, and sometimes get in the middle of a great story after work, and have to sit in the car until it's over. So it was with your channel; I've spend about three hours watching Episodes 4-12. What a fantastic service to sailors, armchair and otherwise. I've learned much from you!

    Hi Patrick! Yours is certainly one of the best sailing channels on YT. Only because it is about sailing and nothing other. And solo sailing, which is what I do myself. This video is, as you wrote on the very last frame: priceless. To be able to keep calm under these conditions is the lesson given here. The analysis of what is going on is the process of rationaly deciding what to do and what to expect. But this has to be done with calm. And a smile. And yours is contagious! Cheers and many thanks!

    I love the detail and reasoning you provide for critical decisions, and your broad societal commentary. What I actually love most is that this isn't insulting to anyone's intelligence. There's no half naked women, or special effects and self-indulgent rubbish. This is real sailing, with real experience, grounded in reality. LOVE your work, Patrick!

    I need to do this. The sea is in my blood and is calling me. I'm due retirement soon and now need complete isolation similar to this. I found this site, among others, as part of my initial research plans, and I'm glad that I did because it copperfastens my intentions. Your videos give a very 'real' aspect of sailing alone, and you capture the ambiance of the seas, wonderfully. Well done on the editing too. Wonderful, tough little yacht. Well done and from Ireland, Míle Buíochas. 🇮🇪 🇨🇵

    WOW! Very nice, very down to earth/sea and honest. I've been watching soo many sailing channels and you/yours speaks the most clearly to me, in regards to my solo sailing present situation and likely future. (kids and wife not as excited as I about engine failure in the open sea)
    You're doing a great thing and doing it well, keep it up. I like your carefree seriousness, the reality and sincerity, it truly shows through; it's refreshing from the many other channels.
    I can hardly wait to be out there and meet ones, not unlike yourself.

    Thanks for sharing. You've given a great insight into caring for your boat and the ability to reason 'outcomes' ahead of situations that could otherwise lead to problems. Realising your boat was comfortable with the conditions even though you personally would have preferred to be some place else demonstrated good 'skipper' qualities, you deserved to feel very happy with yourself. Very satisfying and a great relief to eventually make Port safely and reflect on the journey. Well done.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the kind words. An alternative approach would have been to run downwind with the storm which might have reduced stress on the rigging. I didn't for two reasons: 1) As a solo sailor, I couldn't hand steer for 24+ hours to avoid being turned sideways by the waves, and 2) running would have kept me in the storm even longer, and then I would have had to beat back 150 NM additional miles to get to destination. I note that about 15 other boats arrived in port within a day of my arrival who came from the west (with the storm). It appeared that they had as much, or even more damage than I did coming from the East (headed into the storm).

    Your saga reminded me of a trip I made from St Barth to Virgin Gorda during the eighties on a gale that lasted from 8:00 PM to 6: 00 AM. We were in an Irwin 40 without any roller furling on the Genoa. We started the trip with a 2 reef main and a poled 125 Genoa with a gentle downwind ride and 7 people on board with only me and a 15 yr. old teen with sailing experience. At around 9:00 the teen had to go forward and change the Genoa to a storm sail, something he did in a very professional way. I spent the whole night in the helm thanks to my foul weather gear and lots of hot chocolate and Spanish Galician soup brought to me by one of the female members of the crew that was not seasick. I was so happy when around 5:00 AM I spotted Peter Island on the Northwest, an indication that I was about 30 miles South of my intended route. No radar, no GPS, no laptops and no satellite radios in those times, just a Radio direction finder, a Compass and lots of pencil estimates in printed charts. Keep up the excellent work with your videos.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  6 лет назад +2

      Wow Broker, that sounds like a nightmare scenario, especially with so many non-sailors aboard. Sounds like you managed a difficult situation with extreme professionalism. Bravo. One of my greatest concerns, as a solo sailor, is loss of the autopilot in difficult waters, or during a storm. I have a Plan B and a Plan C, but I really don't look forward to staying at the helm for 24 hours. The Lewmar autopilot I have on my Bavaria has not yet let me down. Knock on wood. Thanks for commenting.

    Just watched this 6 years on…,on my Dehler 37 in Bangor Marina, NI. Fabulous video. You were in that gale for 30 hours…..with an engine that wasn’t functioning. You said that you could have been in a gale 7 days. This is an excellent video for anyone to watch…that is considering a trans Atlantic.

    Courageous and admirable sailing. I just bought my first boat, a 30 year old 38 foot with a in mast furling main sail and furled genoa. I hoping that the main can be reefed as much as necessary to weather a storm like this and not get shredded by the wind as a furling sail is not as durable as your main sail. To make your way back to safe harbor with no engine, your a legend!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  Год назад

      Thanks. In mast furling is a very interesting recent development with infinite reefing now a reality. I haven't sailed on a boat with this system, so don't know what 'performance' is compromised by not having battens in the traditional sense. I'm sure you will have some great adventures with your new boat. Fair winds.

    Brilliant episode Patrick. Thanks for sharing this. My yacht is in the Med, having been sailed from the east coast of the uk there two years ago, but Madeira, the canaries, etc. Are on my list for a couple of years from now. I had the same thing happen to me off Ramsgate during a gale and we were being blown onshore. My son’s heroic efforts to get the sails up saved us and the 40-50 seconds of engine got us on to the pontoon. “We’re coming in hot!!” Well done 👍

    Wonderful, wonderful videos. They give a very good view of what sailing is like for those of us who haven’t experienced it (but are obviously interested.) The details you give may be boring to some but are a wealth of information to others. They really do border on being instructional videos! Plus as some of us increase in age, it gives us something to aim for!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  6 лет назад

      Many thanks Steve. If you go to a professional instructor first and learn with a group, the learnings come much faster (and less painfully). I encourage everyone to start that way --- but then get out there and develop techniques that work for you, in your boat, with your circumstances. It's great fun.

    What a great Video mate. One of the best Gale video's I've seen for small sailing boats. It brought back memories for me of a time when I was 60 nm off shore in my old 50' ketch in a remote part of Papua New Guinea in similar conditions and over a similar time period. I had no motor, no steering and no genoa due to a parted halyard. I brought her in to shelter with a heavy reefed mizzen and a stay sail, using the mizzen trim to steer, although there was no marina or help for me at the other end :) You handled your situation very well - with calm, logical thought even though I'd bet you just wanted to click your heels together and be back in Kansas, or anywhere but there, in that situation. You positioned yourself so you always created distance from danger, and distance = time in a sail boat - and time can be traded for solutions. The best lesson to come out of all that for those watching this video of yours in the future, is stay calm, don't make rash decisions. The gale will pass. Thanks for sharing mate.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 лет назад

      I've done a lot of miles since then Starlight -- so hopefully would play it slightly better the next time (for example, falling off the wind another 10° to keep the sail from flogging as much). It was a great learning experience though --- and sounds like you have experienced something even more challenging. Good on 'ya.

    Just caught the PL train and what a wonderful, exciting ride it is. From a plan captain and aircraft mechanic point of view, I can clearly detect the cool 😎 and intelligent head of a fighter jock after spending 4 years with some of the US Navy’s elite fighter pilots.It’s truly a pleasure to watch classy videos that haven’t been tainted by click-bate tactics, annoying music and Bollywood wannabes. In the early 70's, I was stationed at Lajes Field on Terceira Island in the Azores. Lived off base in Praia de Victoria. Family & I loved it so much I extended my enlistment just to stay long as possible...3 years. Been to all nine islands either fishing, diving, drinking, or all three. The Island of Faial, where the City of Horta is located, is one of my favorite places on the planet. Spent hours walking the marina looking at all the vessel signets painted there..... then up to Pete's Cafe for Sagres cerveza or espresso. Enjoying the hell out of your videos Skipper.

      Thanks so much Mr Grey. What is a bit sad is that the vast majority of people who sail to Horta, leave immediately after a beer at Peter's. As you say, they are a lovely group of islands. I went on to Punta Delgada where I stayed another week. I regret not having made the time to island hop to others. Maybe next time. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Patrick, I’m obviously watching this a few years after the passage, but I am really enjoying it. I like the way that you explain the various situations that you have been in. All the planning before the journey is necessary, but you still have to deal with what occurs on route. I used to sail (learned in the British Army, and then had a small boat for some years) and am hoping to try it again, hence why I’m watching all your videos. I’m doing an online day skipper course and then hope to do the practical when the world is more available for travel. I have the feeling I really would like to sail again, so lets see - fingers crossed. Thank you for these videos, they are very interesting.
