  • The Veil Of Happiness - A centennial commemoration as vOilah! 2020 opening programme
with French subtitles embedding Clemenceau's original script
A fiery anti-colonialist statesman fascinated by the Far East, Georges Clemenceau wrote a play (Le Voile du Bonheur) that takes place in a fantasised China and tells a witty, funny, entertaining philosophical tale about truth and happiness. Performed in Paris, the United States and China and adapted into a musical and two silent movies, it is a forgotten gem of the Belle Époque, for which French famous composer Gabriel Fauré had created an oriental-inspired incidental music. The script and the score were revived in a dramatised reading set up in Singapore on 22 October 2020 for the opening of the 2020 vOilah! festival, to commemorate the centennial of Clemenceau's journey to Singapore, with 8 actors (including multi-awards winning veterans Janice Koh, Lim Yu-Beng, Hossan Leong and Remesh Panicker) and 8 musicians from the YST Conservatory of Music.
