      The prices for mtb are generally insane and ridiculous. Being in oriduction and working with China for over 10 years, I can totally confirm that. No bike should cost over $500, all those parts are durt cheap and they are all made in vhina regardless. I just see the rip off going on in the hobby. What people basically pay is a middle man 1000% markups, nothing else.

    IMO That Marin San Quentin steals the show! And, for what it's worth, my advice would be: 'Spend as much money as you absolutely can'!
    Don't go: 'I have this much money but if I only buy that, I will have this much left in the bank or that much left over for a doo-da'. Or else, you will always know that you do not have the best bike you could have afforded, at the time, and you will always regret what you did. It is is a hellish thing to have just spent a lot of money on pretty expensive new bike and be wishing you had something else. I bought a Ragley Marley 2.0 and, even so, I wish I had spent 300 more on the 1.0, with the 11 gears, dropper post and Marzocchi's.
    Also (and this is a good one), check eBay (not just for 'used') for 'New (Other)'; or big retailers who sell reconditioned 'Customer Returns'. They may have one or 2 chips on the frame, that you would probably acquire within a few weeks, anyway, or they may have had other issues checked and rectified but they won't be getting sold, still with a problem existing because the seller doesn't want the hassle or negative feedback of another dissatisfied customer return on a website where sellers depend on positive feedback, like eBay and you usually find that the prices end at 3/4, or less, than the normal price, if it's an auction (and they usually are auctioned because the retailers don't want them lying around, taking up space, waiting for someone to buy them at a 'Buy It Now' price. They want them 'out of the door'.
    Again: I was kicking myself over that last one because I found out about it, too late.

    I'm curious how the out going Giant Talon bikes stack up to these. I'm looking at the Talon 1 with it's 1x10 Shimano Deore drive train, hydraulic disk brakes, what seems like a decent fork (I'm kinda confused about that), Maxxis Rekon 2.4 inch tires, and pretty aggressive geometry on their 27.5s, and thinking it would be one of the better values on this list. - The Talon 2 even looks pretty good, though I believe the fork is pretty low spec. - Just wondering what your main criticisms of those bikes would be when compared against this list.

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  2 года назад +6

      By outgoing. I assume you're talking about the 2021 models. The Talon1 you reference comes with a Rockshox Judy which is their most basic coil spring fork. The 2022 version comes with Giants own brand air fork which I've heard good things about. I don't believe the 2022 model was released at the time I made the video. It's a good value bike, which is Giant's forte. The 1x10 will be fine as long as you don't have a lot of long sustained climbs at your local trails. For XC riding it is plenty. Of course there is no substitute for fitness. I would prefer the 2022 over the 2021 because of the air fork. The Talon is definitely a contender in this category.

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  2 года назад

      The bike company's sizing guides are a starting point. There are a lot of variables when it comes to bike sizing and everyone is proportioned differently. I look at the geometry relative to other bikes and bikes I've spent time on. Too small a bike will be very playful but you'll be twitchy and cramped at high speed. Too big a bike, you'll have stability but you'll have a high seated position and less control when moving over obstacles. For most people the sizing per the manufacturer is correct. Of course, there is no substitute for testing a bike before you buy.

I am 6'2", 215 lbs, 38 yrs old, reasonably fit, and my arms are the length of someone 2-3" taller than me (if that makes a difference). Currently, the Marin Bobcat 4 is on sale for $810 (shipping included); the Rocky Mtn Fusion 10 is on sale for $866 (shipping included). Would you recommend one over the other? The Rangefinder hands down. If you are getting mountain biking, the rangefinder has 20mm more travel on the fork, which gives you an extra measure of forgiveness without feeling mushy. It also has a thru axle on the fork. The frame has boost spacing. It can also run 29in or 27.5+. It's a more versatile design, in my opinion, and a great starter bike. Especially at $750.
