- I'm back with a new video! And this time, we're putting the New 2020 GT Avalanche to the test on Denver's newest downhill trail! A big thank you to GT for sending me this bike being a good sport about my bike rants. ;D

I guess the bike is mine now, so what would you like me to do with it next? 🤔

(P.s. I've not forgotten about the GT Sensor. I had to take it easy this summer due to some health stuff, but I'm getting back into things. Keep an eye out for more new content!)
Since it's an over priced commuter, outfit it to the gills with racks, panniers, front basket. Then put an ebike conversion kit on it and run it as a cargo bike.
find a cheap second hand fork that is better than the suncrap. shorter stem (50mm), tubless tyres and a 180mm front disc or go mountain biking with a panner rack lol
Its cool that it has the tapered headtube. you mentioned both a 120mm air fork and a 180mm disc in the video... both are super easy and accessible upgrades to a lot of people (especially if you limit yourself to a QR front axle)
I would love to see you put the box prime 9 drivetrain on. It would be an upgrade to the range and then you could review that for us. Otherwise I agree with the masses, a budget 120mm air fork (which will have the added benefit of slackening it a bit) a shorter stem, 180mm front rotor
Giveaway!
Thanks for riding and reviewing the GT Avalanche, Joseph! We are stoked you were able to put the bike through its paces for a thorough and balanced test. Ride on! 🤘🏽
Thanks for sending it along! Doesn't make a very good hat, but seems to be good for finding loam. 👍
What’s up GT?
Value for the Money Merida is much better value for the money. I'm sorry it's true.
This seems like a great all around bike or even a bike packing bike. Were those lugs for a rack I saw on those seat stays? I really would like to see you guys make an aggressive hardtail (more travel, slacker head angle etc.) I loved GTs back in my BMX days 👍👍
@@zPtrck we get no Merida here in the USA. 🤷♂️
for only 18k subs the cinematography is mad!
Sub count doesnt make you good at cinematography!
The fact they responded to your message, and sent you the bike without some kind of expectations is another testament to GT's spirit.
AtticSnacks this is all fake. They worked a deal.
Ah so naive
Gustavo Paulette, no deal. They sent me the bike with no other instructions. No contract, no money, no BS.
@@gustavopaulette3496 if they worked a deal, trail features is legally obliged to state it. So actually, they didn't work a deal.
@@williamgalloway4798 Sending a bike for free IS the deal. Jesus christ people.
Hardtail still rocks🤟
People who rides hardtail press like😄
Hardtail ain't dead🤟
No one said hardtail is dead lol, stop begging for likes
Just bought a roscoe 7, cant wait to take it out.
I have a hard tail it's boss
I have 2 hard tails, 1 full suspension and 5 with no suspension. Hard tails are the best all rounder but for feel a rigid bike is best. Orange Clockwork over most bikes.
2008 BeOne Karma frame with 2005 Bombers. XT drivetrain, Avid BB brakes. I ride it everykind of off road terrain, jumps, downhill, rocks, mud, hard packed singletrack, etc etc. I love it. Cost me around £1100 to build 12 years ago. Not felt the need to upgrade it since then.
Only real negative is I can't find a compatible dropper post. And I made the mistake of going triple ring so it's stuck with a bunch of weight and gears I don't really need. That was normal back then tho.
One day I'll get myself a new FS trail bike but only if it's a clear upgrade and I can't really afford to spend £2k on a bike right now lol.
When did iPhonedo start making mountain bike videos!? Good stuff Joseph!
Skills With Phil Iphonedo is the gold standard for intros 👌. “Horse Chocolate “ 😂
One day I will have my own world dominash.
Gotta work on that accent from an indiscernible origin though. 🤔😄
😂
Phil I love your vids so much
Totally looks worth riding. I'd only change the tires, brakes, grips, seat and pedals. all normal stuff to change on a budget bike too. Good video and fairly unbiased.
Joe! The shots in this video are outta control awesome!! Well done all around dude 👍
Thanks, man! You’ve been stepping it up yourself on the storytelling. Keep it up. 👌
Hi alex!!!
Why is there only two other comments
Awesome video on the GT Avalanche... I started riding with a 2005 Avalanche 2.0 back in like 2012ish but haven't rode in a long time. I still have the bike due to sentimental reasons and started to make huge upgrades on the bike. I replaced the stock 100mm fork with 120mm air fork, replacing mechanical brakes to hydraulic brakes, replaced drivetrain to 1x10 system, replacing wheels with all mountain tubeless wheels, added new and wider 2.3 tires front and back (Specialized Butcher in the front and Purgatory in the rear), added dropper seat post, and replaced pedals with race face pedals. I can't wait till the bike is complete so i can go out and ride for the first time in like 5 years and feel the difference. Again awesome video on the Avalanche and really appreciate you spreading the love on hardtail bikes and of course, GT Avalanche.
Surprise cathro! 😂
Nice work on the video Joseph!
No one ever expects a wild Cathro to appear!
what an intro! that was actually amazing. Not something i would expect for a channel this size. Good on you mate!
Loved this review! Dude, you have “broadcaster voice”! Your editing, storytelling, and VOs are spot on! Really enjoyed the quality of this video!
This video just popped up in my feed. I still ride my 2009 GT Avalanche on the trails! Can't imagine what it would be like to ride a 2020.
This video actually helped me with choosing my new bike a lot. GT Avalanche it freaking is. Thank you, cant wait for it to arrive!
Have that same bike, been riding for over 35 years, like he said, switch out the pedals and tires and you have a great bike for money
Well done reviewing that 2020 GT Avalanche you really deserve that bike. I like what you said on the last part "go grab your bike and find your next adventure"
What an awesome review.. and because of this i just bought myself a turquoise coloured GT Avalanche Competition.
Well, this is after comparing it to the Trek Marlin 7 & Specialized rockhopper!
i am obsessed with gt hardtails some of the best frames on the market in my opinion
nice bike,i have a very old mountain bike,it has only 4 gears that work,im 56 and i only ride flat trails anyway..i would buy a used better bike ,but since i ride flat trails,i guess this old rusted one is good enough..just get out there and ride for health..any one my age ..i wish i could of discovered down hill and aggressive trails when i was younger..it would been fun.one day my friend who does mountain bike alot, talked me into cleaning up my daughters bike..(she was in air force at time ) was her high school bike...so i olied the rust and rode, brakes were worn but kind of worked. Now i tril ride this bike every weekend....maybe i will find a better used bike one day..thank you for you well made video,i enjoyed it.and will subscribe ,take care all you mountain bikers.stay safe.
New to riding mtb. Man, why have I never known about this mtb world. I'm stoked to learn more
Use to be a hardcore BMX rider growing up, thinking about getting into Mountain Biking as an aging adult. Seeing some of these Bikes are 2K to 6k is just ridiculous. Still shocked, never knew Bikes would become this expensive.
I’m 48, same here. Grew up on original GT’s, Hutch, Redline etc. Currently looking for a mountain bike too.
Michael Johnson you can get decent diamondbacks for around 1k that ripppp
Meme Master thanks man!
Trust me gentlemen. A little $ is worth it. Find a Honzo or something similar, you won't be sorry
I grew up the same, BMX. my last BMX bike was a Hutch Judge
This turned out so great 👏🏼
It deserves more than just the hilarious Cathro clap 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼
At least two cathro golf claps.
This is one of the most desired bike in the Philippines. We love GT because of its almost perfect build and doesn't cost a thousand dollars to build
My first real bike(11yrs old) was a new gt propreformer bmx i loved that bike. I moved from Fort Lauderdale to the mountains of New Hampshire at 15 yrs old. I wreched the GT more then once up there. GT finally came out with a MB. I wreched several. Then i got a GT Zaskar titainum frame and fork only. I went nuts judy rockshox titanum on everything alcoa rims panaracer smoke tires( look these tires up they where nargly.) I still ride Miss Zaskar. Damn good all around bike. 25 years of hard bombin and still running. Needless to say i have several different kinds of bikes.
That was really well put together and paced. The effort was worthwhile for sure. Golf clap for you sir 👏
Great video!
Thanks for the review man! I just ordered a 2021 avalanche sport, mostly the same bike. Have not ridden it yet but your vid definitely is good show prep. I just moved to spain from Phoenix so I’m excited to move this bike around and explore
Ben's cameo was genius! LOL
Ben did a gid job. 👍
I have the 2019 GT Pantera. It's basically the same frame (minus internal droper post routing) lowered specs and 27.5+ size tires for around $500 bucks! I love it! Upgrading it will be so much fun!
I have a GT Outpost from 96. Full cromo and still going strong. I dont plan to ever sell it.
How do you see the bike?
So do I :)
Paul Rajkhowa with their eyes😎
silverdropstang ha
And with those bar ends?
Man what a great high-quality review - I got the GT aggressor pro a few months back which is a cheaper bike but I think it uses the same frame. I can definitely attest to it having really smooth tires and I need to upgrade them if I wanna keep the bike. I don’t wanna keep washing out at the trails here in Sunrise, Florida. Thanks for showing me the Colorado trails they look freaking amazing, I was just in Denver recently.
I miss the gt of old. I went from a performer to a Mach one to a talera mtb then a Zaskar LE and bought a pro series BMX before I stopped riding in 20s. I'm happy to see that they didnt take as long as schwinn to recover from selling out
In my GT Avalanche 2018, I put a 140mm Fox 34 suspension, rims, stem and handlebar of Enduro, and 2.35 tyres Maxxis Minion DHF. The bike became a good all moutain hard tail!
When you said budget bike I thought you meant around $200 or so not $800 holy tears!😂😂
Kypros not really, you can spend $300 on a good bike if you get one on sale
Kypros but if you’re talking retail price, yea seems about right
@@kypros5390 the 2020 roscoe 7 goes for 1259.. trek has the marlin series which starts around 500.
@@thomastheysohn Yeah the 2020 one is expensive, but the older versions from about 2018 go for about 600$ new. Of course you can still get a 2000$ bike used for 500$ or less, but I would worry that this bitch snaps under my ass after a few hours of hard riding.
Used is easily the best way to get a good bike for a good price. I got a 2011 Raleigh Talus 8.0 for $100. All it needed was a deep clean, and service. All of which I did for myself under 50$ due to my university having an in-house bike shop that lets you use an entire set of park tools for 1$ (kinda cheating haha). Not an amazing bike but for the price it was an absolute steal. Check facebook marketplace, craigslist, etc for the best deals!
Thanks for the review. I just grabbed the bike on sale directly through GT for $520 shipped so I think I did well. None of the other brands offer the package this one does for less than $650. I was most impressed with the 1x drivetrain of this one vs 2x on more expensive brands. The fork upgrade is easily doable if I ever decide I need it.
Good job Joe!! Digging the paint scheme as well. It's an attractive bike for sure! You're pretty ok yourself. :P
The camera only adds five pounds, right?
@@TrailFeatures So, how many cameras are on you? XD
@@MrTonka just enough to look weird, but not enough where my girlfriend wouldn't let me out of the house.
As a car enthusiast, I loved the introduction of the video because it looked like a car commercial. In a good way.
I'm getting this in 27.5. Throw on some Maxxis tires and new pedals. Good to go. Thanks for reviewing.
Two things about this bike. One, GT is trying to make a bike that is both affordable and versatile. Compromises must be made, as you pointed out about the rear axle. Second, not all of us MTB'ers are purists or YOUNG. I ride a full suspension bike. But I am 70 years old, also. I need a bike that fits my budget and, at the same time, gives me versatility and a measure of comfort. Chunk on most hardtails can get pretty tough for me. Thankfully, I can lock out my suspension and get a hardtail ride on the occasions I need it but also gives me the option of full suspension. So, all in all, seems to me that GT is trying to do the next best thing. Less cost for improved features. Thumbs up.
my first HT was an avalanche and i still ride it now and then. good little bike.
Thanks for the awesome video!
I bought the GT
Aggressor Sport and i couldnt be happier!
Great balanced honest review! Thanks for sharing! Seeing as you love Hardtails, I bought a TREK Roscoe 7 a couple of months ago! I love it! Should probably have got the Roscoe 8 with the higher end components for $400 more but I am a novice so it's all good for now! Maybe GT can build something similar to the Roscoe fill the gap you were talking about. Cheers!
GT ZASKAR LT
I will ride nothing but Gt. I have a 2018 avalanche. Did an upgrade. Changed the front suspension to rock shox air suspension and went to a shimano 1x 11 as well as a wider tubeless tyre. The bike a bullet proof and it's an absolute pleasure to ride.
This is so high quality, holy moly. Keep up the work man!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Had a GT Richter 8.0. LOVED THAT BIKE... not even sure what happened to it... still have the Gary fisher cake 3 that replaced it. Next one is on the brain now...
I would love to get my hands on the frame.I rebuild bikes all sorts. That would be my dream build.I grew up riding gt it would be nice to get it back in my lineup.
For me, a budget bike worth buying has hydraulic brakes, 1x drivetrain with narrow wide chainring and clutch derailleur, and wider bars with short stem. They aren’t easy to find for like 700 bucks, but they are out there. You have yourself a pretty good one, it’s got pretty much all of these things.
So tires and pedals to start and then when you get serious add a dropper and maybe a air fork? Tight.
My 2003 Avalanche has been stripped down and is now a pump track bike. Bullet proof frame and Syncros big box 26" wheels.
More like, "Finally, Another trail features video!"
If GT makes that Hardcore hardtail, they would be crazy not to name it the Megavalanche! Great video by the way, not a single detail overlooked.
I approve of this idea!
If they could slacken the geometry a smidge (shorter stem alone might be enough), include a dropper, and keep the price point at around $1000, it would be a hit. Usually once you cross the 1k mark on hardtails you go from entry level trail hardtail to XC racers, so the geometry tightens way up and they become less friendly for general trail riding.
@@mrvwbug4423 I don't know where you are looking but once you pass the 1k mark, hardtails starts to get longer lower and slacker. 66 hta angle and ,with 140mm forks is the norm. Diamondback syncr, nukeproof scout, vitus sentier, commencal meta ht, specialized fuse, etc. Xc geometry hardtails are the lower end bikes that are outdated
They have the the GT avalanche expert available in Canada, 120mm rockshox recon, full sram sx drives train and well as shifters, 1x 12, 740mm bars, brakes are shimano acera, so brakes are kinda ghetto
@@victorgu5725 the geometry is still xc ish
As a proud owner of a xizang , its glad to see GT is making good bikes again. Congratulations.
Seems like a better priced bike for riding through some trails. More inclines but it's worth more to me spending less than grand on a bike.
Just got my 2021 GT Avalanche Comp 2 weeks ago, and I am loving it!
Awesome job on the vid I’ve always thought your content is very professional quality and look forward to seeing more
Ordered one today. I saved an old GT AVALANCHE 1.0 from the tip and had many a good ride on it. Based on this I was happy to order one!
My avalanche was my favorite hardtail just make sure you go for the upgraded components like the on the avalanche elite
I found an old a Avalanche at a pawn shop in college. You could tell that bike saw its share of white knuckle rides, so I offered the guy $80 dollars for it, slapped some Marzocchi Bombers forks that I found on clearance on it, and rhode the breaks off of that thing for the next 10 years. I had other hardtails costing $1000nds , but that bike outclassed them all. Now I am in the market for a new bike and this comes out. Your review may have gained GT another sale.
This Is Glorious! Another great budget hardtail option - now if only Dick’s would drop the price of the Colorado comp again and stop.... messing around with us 😉
More options = more adventures.
Would this be a good beginner bike for a newcomer?
I'd say that if your budget allows, it's a great bike to go throw a leg over and see what you think. Everyone's a little different, so find the bike that works the best for you.
Daily MTB Rider they dropped the price! Go to their website and I have a few videos about the 2019 Avalanche and the Nishiki Colorado!
Hey man
GT is life changing tech..from entry budget to full spec you just simply love it..Ride GT
I live in Reno near Tahoe. I think this might be my "one" bike.
mixflip I live in Reno also and I’m going to the bike shop right now to buy this bike lol

I actually thought the rear chainstay's were just a design element, like a signature. Surprised to learn they have a value added function. Thanks for that.
Hey I’m in this! I’m the kid with the Gray Santa Cruz!
Awesome! You should now have an idea of how long it takes me to get around to editing a video. 🙃
Trail Features doesn’t matter, it was a great video and I’m happy to be in it!
Sweet bike!
My first time seeing any vids from this channel but as someone with one perpetual eye constantly scoping out hidden quality budget buys I totally dug this. And totally agree about GT throwing their hat in the hardcore hardtail ring! My best friend growing up used to ride the sweetest GT bmx that I envied for years. I've often scratched my head as to why they haven't developed a hardcore hardtail yet. Seems like it'd be right up their alley.. Anyway, great vid, gonna check out more of your channel!
Glad you liked the video! Yeah, I'm really hopeful for the 2021 lineup to have something interesting!
I prefer the 2019 version with external cables, but the triple triangle joint is smaller :(
For the price the components are better than other brands..
Good review..
I too, am a fan of external routing. Really like the system they have on the Sensor/Force. Super easy to run cable.
great channel dude!
Very informative and the bike looks really clean and good!
I really appreciate this kind of content. More people can relate or buy this bike. Thus, promoting biking to people specially youth and encourage them to ride. I have a neighbor who is interested in biking but when he saw FS carbon bikes cost as much as 2nd hand car, he lost interest thinking other bikes (which is not fs and carbon) are junk. I hope more youtubers tackle budget but carefully selected mtb to encourage more people to buy a bike.
😂 dude yes I've lived in CO my whole life, finally a RUclipsr from CO lmao!
I've just ordered this bike in the UK. I was a bit sceptical at first and thought I had made the wrong choice. I own a 2008 GT Avalanche 2.0 and it has never let me down, so I wanted reliability and went with GT again. This video has backed up my decision and re assured me that I have made the right choice. Great review and thanks 👍🏻
Unfortunately, while I won't crap on the bolt on components, my B.S. meter for the seat stays is tingling. Not because of them being up front, but because of them being a flex component that is welded. Due to the nature of welding, you don't use it on anything that is meant to "give" normally, you use fasteners (since torque provides the control for the spring-rate of the component), also the flexing on the weld spot produces microscopic cracks that extend over time and provide a failure. Even if you did the math to figure out the perfect "weld" that can flex constantly, you won't replicate it in production, even with robotic TIG measures.
Of course rivets do not look as good as welded components, which is why I suspect it is welded. So unless GT made the design to where the welds will not take any of the flex unless overloaded by a massive degree, I wouldn't consider it reliable for long term constant use ownership, you know the type where decade old bikes are still beating the living crap out of trails.
I can think of one solution, but it's not really cost-effective and unfortunately opens the avalanche to being more susceptible to frame damage in the rear.
I was looking of an all rounder bike.
Your video got me more interested on GT Avalanche. Thank you very much

great review! GT fanboi here! got a GT Avalanche back in 2002 that i still ride to this day after several iterations and a GT Zaskar 2013 which i outfitted with a 27.5 dabomb wheelset and she rides nice. now thinking about checking out the new line-up GT has to offer. GT HT all the way!
Thanks for the review, I was looking for some content about this bike. Here in Brazil we have a version with Sram SX and 120mm rockshox air fork..
I was looking at the Avalance on an online store and i was bored and went to youtube and the first video that was at the recommended was yours. Thank for your help !!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this review. I ride a Gen 1 SC Tallboy on the trails but my wife and I have gotten into riding greenways and rail trails together and my Tallboy (which I have Frankensteined with 35 mm rims and 2.6 WTB Vigilante/Trail Boss) is not the most efficient thing for long rides on flat, hard surfaces. Something like this GT just might fill the bill for her and me. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the review. It was very informative in a very helpful, real world way. I have been considering a new Zaskar lately, which is more towards the hardcore hard tail you mention but this review has me thinking about the avalanche now as well. Well done sir and thanks again! 🤙
awesome! glad to see GT making a comeback
Absolutely agree about the gap between hardtail bikes and full suspension, and not just for GT. Thinking about selling my full sus for a newer hardtail since most of the trails around my city don't call for it; but every hardtail seems to be either budget oriented, or hardcore XC - theres a gap in the market for all mountain hardtails, where I would happily pay the price of a low-mid range full suspension, swapping the suspension for a hardtail that's not just another aluminium/suntour/deore config
Here in Brazil now in 2022 we have the first trail bike on national brand. It's a Sense Bikes, a very hardcore HT.
Its very sad what the sport becomes here, just "carbon" dudes in the road lmao
any chance of you being able to get the new aggressive hardtail from GT to test? the Zaskar LT Elite just came out.
Thanks for this review. I bought the 29" Comp version of the Avalanche today and so far I like it. Its my first bike and I'm looking forward to making upgrades. Friend of mine hooked me up with some pedals like you have here and they made a huge difference already with foot grip. Your review helps me to believe i made a good choice.
Damn man this video is pretty dialed in. I thought I was doing good on my new bike day video but your intro was pretty sweet.
I also grew up riding a gt bike (and still have it) it brings back a lot of nostalgia. Anywho... This is an awesome price range to have be doing xontent on. I get so many questions from people just getting into mtbing that want to know what to get.
The only bad video someone creates is one they didn't learn something new and have fun while making. 👍
I'm stoked to see GT start to pump out awesome bikes again. I'm also stoked that I'm helping people see you don't need a $4k race rig to go have fun on the trails!
Thanks for watching!
I am riding a 2019 Avalanche right now. This is my 4th GT and I love it better than the others. It has a slightly aggressive stance and feels solid wherever I ride. Once I finish paying this one off I'll be buying the 2020. :)
Gt just released that hardcore hardtail you were wanting them to make, GT Zaskar LT looks top notch.
Saw that! Looks pretty good! Looking forward to it making its way to the US!
Hardcore hardtail with sram 😅😂🙃😭🤡🤣
ex vi termini SRAM is good tho
You def. know how to make a decent review. Congrats.
Among all those YT reviews that mostly deal with bikes that start at 6000,- bucks, your bike check is a great reminder that it’s the rider, not the luxury components with funky colors...
I guess most folks have forgotten that a modern MTB for 800,- is something you could not even dream of 15 years ago in terms of tech... :)
This bike would have given my 98 GT Ricochet a run for its money!
How are the GT Avalanche Elite 2020?
Lucky you. GT don't even return our emails lol. Good job man.
3:20 the cables from the bike are disappearing haha
Wireless. 😉
Trail Features how heavy is this bike?
About 8 years ago i bought a 1981 gt bmx bike to race and I loved it, a few years later I bought a new GT Aggressor mountain bike and I wasn't a big fan because of how stiff the ride was compared to my older specialized, I'm glad to see on this bike they changed the frame to loosen it up a bit more so maybe its time to give GT another try
Great review, love GT bikes.
I’ve never subscribed to a channel after only watching one video from them before. But the video production quality alone was so impressive I had to.
thanks for the vid dude, the bike is definitely on my radar now.
I brought a GT aggressor expert in 2018 and absolutely love I've upgraded tired put on wider 780mm bars and shorter stem for better control new rear mech a 1x drivetrain new brakes and rotors only thing I have to do is the forks but with the upgrades bike runs and feels really good on the trails
I'm looking to get back into biking after about 15 years off. Looking for the bet hardtail under $1,200. Should I consider this or do you think there something in the $900 - $1,200 range that is worth the jump in price?
Welcome back! A lot has changed in 15 years and $1200 can buy you a lot of HT. I'd check out all your local bike shops to see what feels good to you. Kona, Specialized, Salsa, are some brands I'd check out.
@@TrailFeatures Awesome, thanks!

I enjoyed the video. It made me want a hardtail like this - well maybe with a better fork. But for the money - :)
Great Review. I stay in Cape Town, South Africa and I recently bought this exact model but it came with the XCR air fork. Definitely makes a difference!
I’m still riding my 2017 Gt avalanche elite
It's still 2020 bro.
I really want to see a review on brand-new GT Zaskar released this year from this guy. Awesome work!
Thats such a sick hat !
Thank you for making your bike check and review so interesting. I got a lot of information and you made another dimension for gt as a new dream bike because honestly I don't have any budget to buy one that is why I just keep on dreaming.
When I was a kid, I thought it would be fine to ride in the mountains sitting down... let’s just say I learned my lesson the hard way😬😂
Edit: just to be clear I did this on a normal kids bike like a bmx style Walmart one.
Howd the bike end up afterwards?
marcos555554 not bad surprisingly but it wasn’t like going over boulders or anything like that
Good video..I've got a 2020 cannondale trail 8 that I have been using to travel with and I'm happy with it...it cost less than 600 bux.
