It still sucks that it never got aired live, but maybe one day when time machines are around, we'll be able to observe this spectacle.

And Kapil paji is an underappreciated legend lost in midst of the gavaskars and tendulkars. Perhaps this is why India hasn't produced bowlers for so long. I was 10 years old and barely knew much about cricket. We listened to commentary of this match( we had no TV then). After this match, I became a cricket fan and entire India became Kapil dev's fan. This match was the turning point and the victory in final was time when entire India celebrated for the first time after independence probably ( except for 71 war).

I am fortunate to see the copy in 83. Could imagine how emotional Kapilji would've been briefing the team. WOW Moments. First time in life I'm angry with camera crew. But alas, they would've thought Ind vs Zim match, what great can happen. But not now, because of that day.

175 not out back then was the best individual score in ODI Cricket that Kapil Dev made against Zimbabwe in that match. Zimbabwe was considered as good as Australia and West Indies back then and India had lost 5 wickets for just 19 runs when Kapil Dev arrived on the pitch. India had to win that match anyhow in order to remain alive in that 83 World Cup and that inning of Kapil Dev is therefore considered as one of the greatest ODI innings of all time.

We were listening to it on the radio. After 17 for 5 , we turned the radio off and started playing table tennis...as world cup dream was over for us.
When 3 hours later people were still listening to the radio, we wondered what they were listening to.
They said the match is still going on. Obviously we thought it was a hoax...175 not out...yes yes we laughed.
Next day we read in the newspaper..then we believed.
These type of innings are played once in lifetime, No one came even near to our legend Kapil Bhaji.

I went to watch 83 for this innings only. The way this inning is shot is absolute perfection. Moreover Ranveer Singh nailed the character of Kapil to the core.
And according to a friend of mine who was there that day, it is accurate (including the breaking windows scenes)
17 for 5 ,78 for 7 and 140 for 8 wickets Great Kapil Dev came for batting at no 6 when score was 9 for 4 dn, He scored 175 not out in 138 balls ( 16 fours & 6 sixers) with the help of Madanlal and KIRMANI 26 not out.partnership of 126 This was very great innings of all rounder Kapil Dev not to compare but greater than G Maxwell ( from 97 for 7) who made in wc2023 not out 201 vs Afganistan....Both are great Jawbaj❤❤ KAPIL Dev tu si great ho.🙏

During my school days I had the autobiography book of Kapil Dev which had the photo of this match in which the exhausted Kapil was sitting in the ground. What a knock especially during 80s. This record was unbroken for a long time which was later broken by Saeed Anwar in 90s.

I still remember when my dad showed me Kapil Dev on TV when i was maybe handful of years old., he was and still is a charm!
I watched the world cup matches in 1983 from one of my friends home. At that time we children were realy mad of talking about kapil paaji while playing and seeing matches. I think one of biggest turning point of final match was the catch taken by kapilpaji of richards from madippas bowling. Without that catch we couldnt achieve that feet. It was real sportsmanship of fighting till the end to win the match. It's realy coming from his patriotic mindset of his heart throbbing for nations victory.
