I really really appreciate how immediate the video gets into the content instead of having a long intro. Thank you so much
Nothing worse than a video that has 3 minute of 'so first a few updates, don't forget to like and subscribe, blah blah blah'
@@PropaneFitnesshahaha YES! Lol you’re a smart man lol I literally just grabbed the second doona laid it onto the carpet hopped on it and put my doona over the top of me I’m sleeping in the living room right now I was in bed getting ready to turn the phone off and go to sleep when I come across another video about sleeping on the floor which led me to this video and here I am on the floor LOL my body has been busted up till now so this actually makes so much sense and explains why my back in so much of my body has been just so pathetic the last 10-15 years it’s not the entire problem but I think it’s been a big part that I had no idea how much strife it was causing me. I’ll be sure to share my results down the track 😁🙏❤️
U can watch 100s of Tutorials on deadlifts and still be clueless or u can just watch this video and put it in practice!! What an absolute gem Dr Stuart is..
I can listen to him for hours. Always analytical and scientific. No assumptions and generalisation. Entertaining too. 👍

Sleeping on the floor actually helped me with my upper back pain & improved rounded back & shoulders due to working constantly on the computer ... I'd actually get back the pain if I sleep on a mattress/bed within 2 days straight 🤔
(*Note: I sleep on a 5cm memory foam mattress topper on wood flooring)
I slept on a futon pad the floor for years and had no back problems
Then I slept on a mattress for a couple of weeks and my lower back was really tight and hurt like hell.
I have been sleeping on the floor for around eight months and my skeletal system has never felt better. It takes about a week for your body to adjust, but totally worth it!
The book by Bart Haex is titled: BACK AND BED Ergonomic Aspects of Sleeping.
🙏️
OMG this book is over $200.00 on Amazon, and that includes the Kindle version too. 😱

This is a great video. He knows so much, and I learned a lot. Also, can we give a shout out for his wife and her athletic accomplishments and how much he supports her? That was also inspiring.
Wonderful interview!
when i lived in japan the first month of lying on the floor was hell! sore backs every day. after a month we really started to just sleep flat on our backs, and slowly our body changed. now we love a hard mattress.
Same here - I can't deal with a super soft one now
Tonight is my 3rd night on the floor. It is quite painful, and I wake a few times to adjust myself. I do feel slightly better during the day though. Should I keep going?
@@hulksmash6858 absolutely yes😊
Best sleep Ive had was on the floor. On a 7cm foam mattress. Took 2 weeks to get used to, but after that such a good sleep. Did that for several years. Funny thing I laid so still that people thought I were dead 😅
Now I have a 10cm mattress on rigid wood frame, thinking about getting a 7cm instead.
Awesome MAgnus - that's been my experience too, I sleep on the same thing: ruclips.net/video/YP1M8JjKx2Y/видео.html
Right, I sleep on puzzle mats covered with a 1.5 cm pilates mat and a blanket. I used to pull my back regularly for years, couldn't straighten for a week sometimes, hasn't happened since sleeping on the floor.
Since I’ve been doing this I’ve learned the best mattress is a hard wood floor and a yoga mat: it’s cheap, healthy, and the best sleep I’ve ever had lol.
I love how much he talked about his wife 😂 he’s so proud 😊
This was very educational
It doesnt matter how i sleep although on my side i prefer, i wake up with a stiff back. I find i have to sit in a chair/recliner for awhile to get the stiffness out of my back.
At 50yo and facet joint arthritis, especially lying on my stomache just grinds my spine/facet joints to dust. The spinal curvature i get from sitting i think helps take pressure off the facet joints.
You and Stuart Mcgill are so awesome to listen to !

He's cool AF 😎! I love that he is an avid snowmobiler as well. I was worried I would have to say goodbye to "vibration sports" @@PropaneFitness
Great video man! I’ve been floor sleeping for little under a year and it has done miracles with more strength in the back as well as better posture while working . I would suggest anyone to try it out!
Good stuff Elijah
Thanks for the info. I love a soft mattress, but boy, does it make my back sore. It seems that any style of mattress for me over time makes my back sore. I am one of those who change position from side to side throughout the night. I shall have to give a mattress topper on the wood floor a try!
I slept in floor around many years and I still sleep on floor it's a awsome sleep
yea im thinking of trying it again cuz it feels good when on back on floor in general
Already as a kid, I was a curvy girl. Big bum, big thighs, small waist, and wider shoulders again. My parents took multiple times photos of me, lying on my back on the floor, with my legs spread to each side. Now I'm considering sleeping on the floor since I never feel properly rested. I sleep on a bunk bed at the top.
Damn this guy is amazing
Thank you ❤❤❤❤
I'm very thin but have cervical spine damage (headache 24/7 since 3 neck injuries starting on 10/1/1995) and then I did something wrong while doing yoga in 2/2020 and hurt my lower back. My spine is very curvy, which makes my butt cute, but the amount of lower back curve isn't good structurally. Anyway, at 56+ years old, I'm getting more and more pain and also have SEVERE insomnia. For almost 4 years, I was sleeping on a 4" thick memory foam and regular foam mattress topper on the floor. I loved it when it was on carpeting in apartments. But, my condo has wood floors, which made it a bit TOO firm...and I also felt societal pressure to get a "real" bed. I got a medium firm mattress with pillow top on a platform bed. Then for some stupid reason I felt it wasn't squishy enough, so I added a 2" (I think it's thicker than that) lumpy memory foam topper in the spring of 2021. I'm so desperate for both pain relief and sleep, I've recently tried sleeping on a yoga mat on the wood floor and also a sleeping bag on a yoga mat on the floor. It didn't go well. For one thing, I'm more of a side sleeper now than back sleeper. As a kid, I was a back sleeper. So, I tried removing the stupid mattress topper I bought and it IS helping, but it's not perfect. I'm still tempted to ditch me "real" platform bed and mattress and get a quality shikibuton to put on the floor.
You sound just like me! Did you find a good sleeping situation?
@@thistooshallpass5425 No. My insomnia is SO horrible. :-( I just toss and turn all night.
After an accident where I broke my back and femur, I had to sleep on the floor for over 15 years! At first, it was hard as I did not know how to sleep on a floor. Today, 44 years later I sleep on a big tall bed. However I miss my floor!!! Today even a futon will work.
How long does it take gravity to flatten the over curves in the spine?
Thank you for the video! Can I ask you - how did you fix the problem with your left leg… I have the same problem and I am a bit in panic.. Thank you in advance ❤
I love seeing Bert’s portrait in the background ❤❤
An important staple
I have the problem. With back pain lemi hope thise will work
I've done some looking around and now I'm starting to wonder and worry that sleeping on the floor without cushioning is going to cause me health issues since it seems like everyone else uses a cushion.
Hi I found you through researching Dr McGill, after pinging my back again, and waiting for it to settle. I listened to all your podcasts, which are very interesting and helpful. Are there any clinicians who studied Dr McGill's methods in the Newcastle area. I've found one master in London only so far.
Glad you found it helpful Anna - all the best with your recovery. I've seen Tom Feeney at Whitley bay in the past who is excellent
@@PropaneFitness thank you, that's great, I'll give him a try.
I have one of those butts. A lot of athletic "black" men and women do. That gap in the lumbar region is a problem when sleeping on my back. I've countered it with a lower back pillow and or an under knee pillow which rotates my pelvis thereby forcing my lower back to make contact. His lower back device sounds interesting.
Yep. Curved up
I have slept really good on a 3-inch memory foam.
But the problem with that is that it is out gassing plastic fumes.
It will ruin you over time.
Thank you very much for this video. Interesting because I have degenerative discs (though in better than average shape for a 61 yr F) and love my memory foam bed. 🤔 I do roll around (I’m about 138 lbs. and moderately curvy) and wake up rested. I do attribute that to the emotional work that I do (tapping, sound therapy and energy medicine) because each time I have a session, my body has less pain and discomfort. It’s no secret that wellness starts in the mind.
I absolutely do get discomfort and pain if I stay in bed too long, that was very interesting, I’ve always wondered about that. (I worked long and hard through solving the CFS, fibro and depression that I had for years) And of course posture matters 😂
My regards to your wife, she sounds complex and fascinating. That might be a new tagline for me « you’re not going to row through me… » 😉
UPDATE: I started sleeping on the floor (on a palette of assorted cotton and down blankets) and feel great. It’s been about three weeks and I find that I need less hours of sleep than I used to. 8 hours is enough…I used to easily sleep 8,9,10.
I definitely have less aches and pains. I went back into the bed after 5 days (felt too lazy to drag out the palette) and felt worse in the morning. I don’t see myself ever going back into a bed.
Does this address side sleepers
I've seen sleeping on the floor for the past 8 months, took a while to get use to it
It’s comfortable
what kind of pain did u have? i got lower back pain
“It’s true because we did a study” I love to hear scientists say this, or people in general lol
"Do you know who I sleep with? I mean... who my wife is?" Lmao
Great interview man!
I enjoyed that little slip
If circulation gets restricted to the point your body parts ‘fall asleep’ with pins and needles, it is counterproductive. Then it is not a massage. There needs to be at least enough air space underneath you to allow blood circulation.
Bro… the space travel astronauts part…. Sheeeeeeesh 😓
I'm a skinny guy (5.9 feet tall at 132lb), yet i sleep on memory foam. Is it good for me? I feel very tired when waking up and it takes me forever. I have scoliosis since my adolescence.
I got a few videos recommended where people say sleeping on the floor is healthy. Someone even said it is like being massaged for 8 hours straigth. I apprechiate hearing an other perspective on it. It seems like this is like anything in biology. There are things that work for some and doesn't for others.
This was very informative thank you! That doc loves his wife, its adorable!
i tried it combined with foam rolling is hard to fall a sleep but spine feels solid when u wake up even iof feels fuked after waking up
My friend sleeps in a hammock, whats your opinion on that?
Hes weakening his lower back
I would love to know what people experience is who have a pelvic tilt by that i mean your but sticks out because your lower back curves backwards. If i lay on the floor on a yoga mat i don’t touch the ground with my lower back. Can sleeping on the floor straigthen out the curve? Also i do have neck and back aches so i am interested in this
“Straightening out the curve” is not always a good thing if the curve straightens in the wrong way.
See a doctor you trust. Not a rando on the internet saying “this simple thing cured my pain”.
Think about block therapy. You can find it here on RUclips. It’s helped my back problems very quickly and I’m 61
3:33 no wonder he looks like he works at NASA or is filming from space lol
It is well known from years!
That settles it I'm going to sleep on the floor tonight my dog's not happy
😂 brilliant
Bart Haex - Back and Bed: Ergonomic Aspects of Sleeping
im 25 at 175lbs athletic, I sleep on the floor boths sides and flat on back. 8 hrs of sleep always. Morning straight to the gym for pool to decompress then weights after. stretch before i leave bam! Try it out. Oh and not forgetting the lean eating; water etc.) 😉
All over the world people sleepnon the floor. When i was in nogeria my back never felt so good because i slept on the floor on a mattress
interesting video! also Bert in the background is the definition of nightmare fuel
Is it better to use a futon or just hard floor with blankets
Either can work, depends on your build. You need something to cushion your joints
@@PropaneFitness Our ancestors didn’t cushion their joints. They never had structural problems.
@@jowar1949
Bullshit.
Practically EVERY animal uses some type of bed with cushioning.
They may be made out of sticks and leaves or other materials, but it is a cushion.
Heck, some even use smaller piles of smooth rocks with replicate a memory foam mattress after they move around a bit.
@@jowar1949also bullshit on the “never had structural problems.”
Canes and walking sticks have been a thing for millennia. That’s specifically a structural problem. And there is a history of canes since human history.

Yoga mat is wreally working for me i just like the better rest your body is getting even from way less sleep then in a bed its insane the benefits it gives your body even the natural massage your body is getting from sleeping on the floor that's hard and firm not soft like a matras. Btw your saving a lot off money no bed/matras needed and you sleep better :) win win situation lol

Sometimes I just wonder, how our species made it till today, without the inventions of the last 500 years.
Lying on a hard flat floor can ease back pain issues
Firm is best.
For you.
But firm is relative.
The skeleton supports the muscle the body can heal much faster on the floor ancestors slept on hard surfaces they had no back problems
yea was thinking that too, before there were beds ppl slept on floors
Why does Bert in the background look like he belongs in a horror film?
It's the grossly dilated pupils. He's experiencing true euphoria
@@PropaneFitness Sounds like he took an ecstasy pill.
If you have back pain, sleep on the floor a few nights and you will be feeling better.
„sleep like tribe’s men” WRONG: Unlike indigenous tribes WE HAVE hardhood floors while indigenous tribes sleep on the ground in a hut so incomparable surfaces.
For years I slept on the floor on a thick folded duvet akin to a traditional THIN futon and I never slept better. Sleep on a thick but firm futon now.
"Do you know who I sleep with? My wife is..." 😂😂😂

5:07 Stuart Mcgill - Memory foam doesn't help skinnier people
🛌
Eh. It depends on body type and genetics.
Just for laughs:
Q: You know whom I sleep with?
A: There could be umpteen number of them, give me a clue I will point one of them.
Throw out your memory foam mattress, Worst beds ever and I am currently in massive pain,
Expensive doesn't always mean the best.
It's all marketing BS, They say it conforms to your body, In reality it just sags at your bodies heaviest point which for most people on the planet will be around their mid section(hips, waist, stomach, buttock).
Won't matter if you sleep on your back it will sag at mid section and you end up with lower back pain, Sleep on your side and your hips will sink and you get hip pain.
Best bed I ever slept on was 25+ years ago on a thin futon on wooden slats that wasn't expensive, Thin enough it couldn't sag but just soft enough to give enough support on your bones.
It did take a few months to get used to massive change, But I then had that futon for over 10 years and wish I had of kept it, Only reason I got rid of it is because I thought oh well it's over 10 years old maybe it's time for a change, Went with normal mattress and struggled ever since.
That’s for your body.
It is genetic to what your ideal amount of support is.
Giving advice like “throw out your xyz because it works for Me” is the worst advice.
That’s like saying “don’t use your Asthma inhaler because I don’t use it.”
7:16
just like toxic people :)
WTF is a futon?
it is kind of japanese mattres which you can use while sleeping on the floor
Where do you buy a futon lol
