- An introduction to Tube Food. Extremely difficult to acquire, at only 28,000 produced annually. We check out Caffeinated Apple Pie, Polenta with Cheese & Bacon, and Beef Stew. There are 19 different menu options in total. Produced for over 50 years now, and has been optimized for palatability and efficiency. Not mentioned in the video, Tube Food is stored in refrigeration, lengthening the shelf life well past the standard 3 years if stored at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or 26.67 degrees Celsius.

Instead of click bait he makes his own music. What a champ
Exactly. If you want the opposite of steve, Markiplier, comes to mind. Over thematic, immature, and obnoxious. Steve is professional, mature, and provides raw information.
Right! Steve's content is so wholesome that only by watching it I managed to win a History quiz with a question about canned food 😆
The aircraft has a small “oven,” just big enough to drop in the aluminum tube (sans plastic cap). Once he did, the food squirts through the tube quite easily. My favorites were caffeinated chocolate pudding, sloppy Joe’s, and peaches.
I think at that altitude, unless the cabin is pressurized, the atmosphere inside the tube would also be a little pressurized. So the stuff inside would come out easier.
@@dezmodium ooh, now it makes sense, I was wandering why would they put it into something that was soo hard to squeeze
yes, he states this In The Video
@@dezmodiumU2 cockpits were only partially pressurized - to 29k ft versus it's 70k cruise altitude. So you're probably onto something here!

It's a nice tray. Sturdy.
Can't imagine a nicety like a tray would be bothered with under fighting conditions.
Ikr as a pilot can u imagine? Lol
It's particularly funny when the ration is just a tube of boiled sweets, or a biscuit. I wonder what he'd do if he reviewed an actual WW2 food tray.

I work for the company that makes the suits, straws, and applies the labels to that food... And that apple pie is TASTY! Glad you enjoyed it. You are part of a small group of people who have tried it.
Can you buy this anywhere?
Comment below says its just applesauce with cornstarch plus artificial flavoring.
In possible you could replicate for home. I think it’d be swell to sell commercially.
So how do we buy them? Should make more sales to civilians like every MRE company is.
Well hook him up dammit
Bruh, can you hook me up, i'll pay. I've always wanted to try these since I heard about em as a kid as it was my dream to fly.
For the 6 or 7 years I’ve been watching Steve, he’s never had a miss, only hits, I know of no other creator with that kind of strike rate. A true king

Caffeinated apple pie in a tube is something I thought I would never hear put together.

Caffeinated apple pie in a tube, specially made for spy pilots
That may be the most American food ever to exist.
I could have used that when I was an undergraduate.
I'm strangely compelled to try it. They should put caffeine in more foods.
My dad worked with the company that designed the heaters for these . The reason it's so hard to squeeze out is they are designed to be heated it makes the contents less thick and allows you to drink it like a caprisun . hope you’re doing okay friend. hospitals are definitely no fun
Greetings from Canada. I had to be hospitalised last year for three nights [not covid] for the first time. I was surprised by the meal variations to make the patients feel better, including chicken drumstick, scalloped potatoes, and a pork chop. And this was in a very small hospital with only 10 inpatient beds.
Used to be a crew chief on the U-2. Pilots commonly brought back some extras. My favorite was by far the caffeinated chocolate pudding. Going rate was 10 rip-its per tube.
Fellow U-2 crew chief, the caffeinated pudding was always the one that got fought over, yeah. Little consolation for having to empty a full piss can lol.
This is the first time I’ve ever heard a comment from someone who worked on U2s. For some reason I find that really cool. ❤

Obesity is already a massive problem. Last thing people need is a tube of caffeinated apple pie with 1300 calories that they can suck down 6 of while they’re at work 😂
When Steve said he was going to trade the MRE for something else.
I just picture Steve and his fellow MRE aficionados swapping them around like Pokémon cards. So wholesome.
These highly specialized tube rations were actually developed by U2 (the band) for the delicate and temperamental gut of Bono, who has been known to hold his bowels for 12 hours on stage
It's so wild that this massive community of random people have gathered to watch a guy eat preserved food.
It's such an obscure & random thing, but has more viewers than mainstream stuff.
I think that says alot about Steve & how much we all like him.
mainstream culture is sick, watching Steve is the vaccine
When he busts out historical MREs, it's like experiencing history as much as I may cringe at some of the stuff he's ready to stomach.
His format is so enjoyable that I've learned quite a bit about MREs.
Someone will write a dissertation about Steve and his following in 10 years.
I think it’s called muck banging or some dumb thing. This guy is above that though, for sure. I only see a few of this guys videos a year but it’s been years now and I still watch a vid on occasion.
@@bewaterthroughstone9477 It's a Korean thing. Mukbang? But with Steve it's the background information that's the thing - the actual eating is more a kind of proof of concept.

Hello Steve, I'm a Marine of 6 years and currently work on the flight line. I've had the honor of trying these before with a pilot buddy of mine who flies this very air craft. Obviously I don't know if they're allowed to have them (I'm a retired line cook, not a spy plane pilot), but they make aluminum tube keys that slide onto the end crimp and can roll up the tube with almost no waste. You used to see them for toothpaste, back when toothpaste came in metal tubes, but they still use them for artist paints, hair dye tubes, et cetera.
I wonder if you could use one of those household interior door unlocker tools for that. The little metal "keys" you stick in the bedroom door when your 4 year old locks you out of your bedroom lol.
A big version has been sold as an " MRE key "

Steve single handedly made MREs popular among normal people. I remember getting them in the early 2000s from the sportsman guide. I camped a lot when I was young and we would all eat them. The chocolate covered oatmeal cookie and the beef stew from that era was actually really good.

Back on NAS Key West around 2006 they had an armed forces day with a bunch of different demonstrations. One of the U2s flew down and had a booth where they let you sample the tubed food. I tried the apple pie and was surprised at how good it was.

I loved the video. Thank you for many years of wholesome entertainment, Steve.
This was great, Steve. I guess the tubes are as fragile as the planes themselves, which are extremely optimized.
About 26 years ago, I was on an engineering team trying to figure out why a particular U-2 consistently stalled to varying degrees on one side during landing, being saved only by outstanding piloting. It had undergone full refurb prior to the issue but everything looked right and it had tested well prior to re-entering service.
It turned out that the .032” thick skin on the wing in question was very, very slightly misformed about 2/3s of the way down the wing and the atmospherics during testing had been good enough to not cause an upset. We’re talking a few thousandths of an inch out of chord, but it was enough to stall one wing before the other at landing speeds, which was a deadly situation.
The U-2 is at once very simple and also highly complex and fickle, just like its food.
I wouldn't be advertising any thing mentioned.... specifically

Fun Fact: Since the straw of these food tubes can go through the helmet (obviously) and taking your helmet off mid-flight is definitely not allowed - pilots actually use the straw to scratch any itch on their face because that's basically the only thing they can do other than ignore it.

The polenta is a really great idea. It's perfect for a tube food. Packs a lot of protein, carbs, fiber, and can be flavored many different ways as it accepts flavors easily..
