I think we all are grateful to Jimi for his years with Survivor, but this song belongs forever to David!

This is an awesome live version. Bickler's voice has a lot of projection. Powerful and melodic. Oh and Sullivan's guitar solo is so tasty! :)

Love the tasty tone and feel Sullivan had in the 80s and 90s. Has since tried to 'add too much' to songs, and cause them to lose their feel x.x

Wow Dave is impressive here. I came across this show one day and was like I never heard Dave with them live back then. I guess they decided to bring him back briefly cause of Jimi out doing his own stuff. I know Dave had vocal issues one reason he was let go, but he sounds great here.

I've also uploaded an audio of Dave singing Eye of the Tiger live in 1982 from the Going the Distance tour (taken from the concert at the Wheeling Civic centre) The live audio is accompanied with an unofficial video I made. 😊

It was Sullivan who initially was livid at Jimi going on tour with his 'memphis cronies' (Peterik's words, not mine) under the name Survivor around 1992. Peterik had a call from Sullivan about this. The final straw for Peterik was Jimi setlists that included songs originally sung by Bickler, that was never recorded by Jimi. They called it a bogus Survivor 😀. While their litigation matter with Jamison over the band trademark was still on going via their lawyers; Sullivan & Peterik decided to reform the original Survivor but Dave initially wasn't keen to join them so they had to look at who's who as potential vocalists until Dave finally agreed to return to Survivor. Can't blame the man as he was poorly treated when he had his vocal polyps surgery. Ignoring his doctor's orders, the band forced Dave to go back on tour 2 weeks after his surgery. Unbelievable 😳

So Dave initially didn't want to return to survivor in 1993. ? I didn't know there was resentment and bad blood there. Was his parting with the band in 1983 an acrimonious one? He must have been hurt about being replaced because he wasnt recouperating fast enough for them.
In one of Dave's interviews that I was listening to online from 2018 he said he jumped at the chance to get back out there and perform when asked to return in 1993. Maybe he didn't want to say the truth about how he really felt when asked back I don't know.
I never read Jim's book so any inside info on this would be appreciated. 😃

@@carried1676 perhaps Dave was a little apprehensive at first which is understandable owning to the circumstances that lead to him parting ways with Survivor in 83. Peterik's book says they looked at who's who of potential singers before Dave agreed to join them. This suggests Dave had been asked already but was pending his agreement. I also read they wanted to reform the original Survivor in response to Jamison bogus Survivor, so that implies Dave was first in line naturally but they looked at others in case Dave declined.

@@carried1676 additionally, his recent candid openness about how he was treated by the band and their management, when he started having vocal problems and his subsequent surgery, appears to upset him a little still when he reminisce those days. Dave said he got no support nor sympathy from his band and management. According to Dave, they said to him and I quote "What's the matter with you?!" " It's all your fault!" 😳☹

Dave Bickler at his best owns this song. It's a very difficult number to sing. Jimi Jamison did a decent job, and was a better frontman and more versatile than Dave... but as for this song alone... Dave was the man (in his prime).

    • @WildIronLizzy

I agree with most of what you said 👍 except better frontman, which is subjective.🤔 Yes, Dave seems more reserved on stage, which personally I like. Never was a fan of too much flaunting on stage though Jimi was modest on stage compared to the 80s cock rock era. 👍 In terms of versatile, is where I respectively disagree if we are talking about vocals. I sing from C3 to C#6 and D6 on very good days. No falsetto. I have a musical family starting with my grandma. We love most genres and international music so we pay attention to vocals. We couldn't careless what the singer looked like. Most of us play instruments too. Dave was absolutely versatile in his style of vocals from early 70s hence why he appealed to an audience and prospective singers outside the rock genre. He seamlessly connected all his vocal registers with no breaks and had an impressive skill to jump octaves from one note to the next on pitch. Back in his prime, he effortlessley switch vocal styles, heavy distortion to clean vocals in one song. He combined old school soul vocals with runs and melismas amid rock power vocals. His isolated vocals are being heavily used on funky RnB and pop ballad mashups because of how versatile his vocals are and how he is mostly pitch perfect to the point he doesn't need the music at all. Check out the reactions to his vocals alone. I have a few ardent soul and RnB fans in my family who like only big voices and was not very impressed with Jimi's whiskey soaked smokers vocals as his style leaned towards heavy metal even when he sang pop ballads. However, they were impressed with Bickler. His vocal abilities just appealed to them. Even to the point they went out and brought the Eye of the Tiger record. Not a genre they would ordinarily listen to. 😀

@@WildIronLizzy Survivor era with Jimi wasn't my kind of music except Burning Heart was a good catchy survivor song best fitted in a Rocky movie. Jimi was much more comfortable on stage and was like a typical 80s stadium rock front man. That is if you like to watch music visually - ie. performance, TV etc then he was more of the entertainer. No way like Steve Perry's magic on stage though. His engagement with the audience and way he conveyed the lyrics to them was almost like you were part of his play. Can't say about Bickler's stage presence in the early 80s as there are no single live footage of the classic Survivor. Bickler started out as a singer/instrumentalist on stage with Survivor so may be more comfortable with this setting. However, I'm old school radio and record players generation so we just judged things by our ears without any idea what the band looked like so no biases. I always thought Bickler was a black soul singer who could belt out rock vocals. We all did in my school until the EoTT video came out when it hit number 1 in the UK. We were surprised to see the singer looked kinda like Schwarzenegger but sounded like a Motown singer :D. Anyway, 100% agree with you about Bickler being a versatile singer. Got all the first 4 Survivor albums and a wife whose a big RnB /Soul fan (not a rock fan sadly) and she loves Bickler's vocals. :)
