    Adam,
    I would really like to practice hitting the golf ball at my house, but I don't have 200 yards to hit the ball. I would really like it if you did a video on some backyard drills, either just practicing the correct techniques to hit the club without the ball, or some other way. Keep up the great work and I am loving the videos!
    Thanks.

    That's good advice about having two sets of wedges. I practice with one set 56 and 60 degree and that means the 56 and 60 degree I play on the course with remain in top condition. Just make sure you have the same bounce in both sets.

      honestly I would say a lot of chipping green practice until you have a good feel of how the ball is going to react to different swings, clubs, etc.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  7 лет назад +7

      John,
      It depends how much you play and practice. Just check to see that grooves are farly sharp and that face of club still has texture (from milling). If you practice a lot maybe buy two wedges and use one for play and one for practice.

    It’s hard to tell the distance you’re hitting your chips so my question is does this firmness or speed work on a 10 yard chip to edge of green with the flag another 6’ or so?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  3 года назад

      Ed,
      There are many factors at play in controlling distance. Speed & slope of green, your lie, type of ball, loft of club, quality of milling on your club, weather & wind etc. There has to be feel and experience to judge these things.
      I hope this helps.

    Does a low, extended finish create more spin?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  6 лет назад

      +AaIRoIN
      Thanks. Regards finish, in and of itself the finish doesn't affect spin. I'd say the low extended finish is indicative of passive wrists and a stable clubshaft through impact. So it's more a sign of good habits (which help with consistency of spin) than anything.
      Hope this helps.

    I get backspin on chip shots when I don't want it - and none when I need it... all backwards.

  • @vantrago9063
    @vantrago9063 4 года назад

    For what it is worth: "Backspin does not depend on roughening the clubface." - pp. 152-156, Cochran, Alastair & Stobbs, John, Search for the Perfect Swing; The Proven Scientific Approach to Fundamentally Improving Your Game, 2nd edition, 2005.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  4 года назад

      Van,
      It's certainly not the only factor, but it's still friction that makes the ball spin. Loft, & speed are the big variables. That said a tour ball (soft cover) spins better than a harder ball, again, more friction. Milling and grooves are also a factor. This is why the rules of golf outlaw doctoring the clubface (say using a metal file) in order to get more spin.
      All the best, Adam

    • @vantrago9063
      @vantrago9063 4 года назад

      Adam,
      I'm inclined to think that the reason why Pro V1s (and other tour-level balls) give more spin has substantially more to do with their layered constructions and the internal dynamics which that enables than it has to do with coefficient of friction.
      As for the grooves, I believe their primary role serves the same purpose as sipes on tires -- to provide a more rapid escape path for moisture. As I recall, the USGA decided to ban square grooves because they did the job too efficiently -- they made shots from penalizing lush lies too predictable.
      Check out the Cochran & Stobbs book on this. They ran experiments with pairs of 5, 7 and 9 irons (supplied by Dunlop). Each pair was identical in every respect, except that one had grooves and the other did not. Their statistically significant results are listed in the passage referenced in my initial comment.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  4 года назад

      Van,
      I agree regards the grooves. Unless there is moisture or long grass they are of no help. The milling of the face is a factor (a fairly small one) in friction and spin though.
      All the best, Adam

    • @vantrago9063
      @vantrago9063 4 года назад

      The common view seems to be that soft balls spin more. But the opposite seems to be the case.
      Here is a comment on recent design changes that Inesis made to its Tour 900 ball: "… Inesis made several tweaks to the original design to boost compression by five points (85 to 90), which Inesis says also increased wedge spin." [Source: mygolfspy.com/first-look-second-generation-inesis-tour-900-ball/ .]
      But Inesis’ experience is not unique: "A soft ball is a slow ball; it’s that simple. If you are playing a “soft” golf ball, it’s probably costing you distance off the tee (unless you swing under 85 MPH) and spin around the green." [Source: mygolfspy.com/most-wanted-golf-ball/ .]

    I didn't see any back spin on your practice shots it appears to be a normal pitch shot..

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  6 лет назад +1

      Backspin is just a result of friction between club and ball. This is affected by loft, club head speed, quality of ball & club, lie, as well as turf and wind conditions. The ideas put forth in the video (loft, speed, slight glancing hit) all enhance this.
      For shots as short as I'm discussing there won't be sufficient spin to back the ball up. just make it stop more quickly.
      I hope this helps.
      Best, Adam
