When the FA Cup still meant something. I was 16 in 1988 and at the game. I'll never forget seeing my team win the FA Cup and against arguably the best team in Europe at the team.
Saint and Greavsie was a brilliant show, 2 great and humble guys with a terrific sense of humour, sadly this is lacking with today's Sky experts who are full of their own self importance and basically full of shit.
Here we are 36 years later and Liverpool fans still cannot give little Wimbledon credit for their only FA Cup win. This arrogance and bad sportsmanship is one of the reasons why Liverpool fans are the most hated in this country. Well done Wimbledon, you deserved it and you put a smile on every neutral fan in the UK 👍
I agree the FA Cup used to be special whatever club you followed everyone used to tune into the FA Cup Final now its a massive 2nd tier event which is sad. Money money money
used to spend half the day building up to the fa cup final, now none of the big clubs really care for it, youth or squad players tend to be used for cup games by the big clubs nowadays, admittedly we were banned from europe back then so the big boys had the ability to play their best teams but still the tournament should be shown more respect
Up the Bees!! I started going to Brentford in 1987. They were my 2nd team after Manchester United. I was born in Rochdale and used to go to Old Trafford every fortnight. My Dad got a job down in London though so we had to move to Feltham and Brentford were my local team. 👍👍
'The Douglas Balder of football, good in the air, when it came to being on the ground, not so clever.' - Unbelievable! That joke wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Got to love Jimmy Greaves, one of the all-time greats yet humble and no-pretension whatsoever. Bobby Moore always seemed very humble also. Fantastic upload!
Great Memory of this final. Liverpool were one of the best club sides in the world at the time. As others have said not the greatest shock ever as Liverpool drew with Wimbledon at Plough Lane that year and Wimbledon were sixth in the league the previous year. Greatest shock was Sunderland beating Leeds in 1973. Sunderland finished sixth that year in the second division, that Leeds squad had won the cup the previous year and two UEFA cups and two league titles in the previous 5 years.
@@a.tanner8524 A fighter ace with with no legs. It would be seen as mocking the disabled and I'm quite sure the powers that be in TV wouldn't allow it in this PC and woke age. Just an observation. I'm not offended by it at all.
I remember watching a documentary about the Hillsborough disaster and John Aldridge said that he thought how uncomfortable the Leppings lane terrace looked in the 1988 semi final. It certainly did.
Wimbledon played their tactics right. soon teams realised the most effective way to confront Liverpool is stop them playing , play tight at the back and send high long balls into Liverpool penalty box which Crystal Palace did in the 1990 FA Cup Semi-final. i just wish teams like Burnley do this against Man City nowadays to make Pep Gurdiola resign and go back to Spain.😅
Greavsie was very unpretentious person, lighthearted, not what you would expect from one of biggest British football legends. This humor is maybe a bit cringe today but is of its time (think it was already kind of outdated when this aired, but that was the point), same as more casual type of sports program. Most of these programs today are way more aggressive, like watching the news. These two were playing it a bit dumb even if they knew better, to make a cozy atmosphere. Like watching football with your grandad.
Bet a tenner with my friends father that wed win ,cudnt believe any1 would back against us 🙄 so disappointing to not get the double with that team we had😔 YNWA
Ronnie had played instead of Ablett. Sorry I KNOW GARY DIED BUT Gary Ablett always looked nervous and that didnt bode well . but 100% Ronnie was missed he was tough he was available .for selection .
The good old days of football when ex pro's just talked football and nothing like the total garbage that's going on today with Gary Lineker and the Beeb bringing the MoTD program off the air this week of March 2023.
I think Liverpool's problem that day was that they thought they only had to turn up to win. Maybe they thought the hard work was done in the semi final
No and i know like many you are very 100% wrong. Liverpool had played Wimbledon in similar League matches and drew 1each and possibly Wimbledon might have won one of them.
No...the referee was an idiot for disallowing beardsley's goal in the first half. lf i could get hold of that referee now. l'd think i'd do time for him.
@@nikreece6295 I hear you!! I felt exactly the same about Peter Willis when he sent Kevin Moran off in the 1985 final against Everton. Luckily we won!! If we hadn’t then I would still be annoyed now!!
I remember this very well...l was 10years old in 1988... As a Liverpool fan.. To this day, I'm still trying to work out how the f*** did these c***s beat us
RONNIE WHELAN NOT IN THE FIRST TEAM MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE AS HE WAS UNDERRATED AS A PL AYER AND as a TOUGH PLAYER. IT WAS A BIG MISTAKE NOT PLAYING RONNIE WHELAN . SORRY BUT GARY ABLETT WASNT A GOOD CHOICE FOR THIS WIMBLEDON MATCH.
Memories of simpler and happier times. I used to love watching this brilliant program on Saturday lunchtimes.
I totally agree. Well said. 👍👍
I wish I was alive before this time.

6:33 Continue RIP Bobby Moore and Terry Neill
I’ve been watching so much 80s football lately what an era that was as a kid I loved it. Saint and Greavsie were the best!!!
God I miss the old days, cup final day used to be so special. Now I can't be bothered with it. Magic gone.
Agreed. 👍👍
Just wish the FA Cup Final could go back to this.

davec very well said. I remember watching chelsea man city last season in the 5th round and city put out a youth team then lost 5 - 1.
Loved S and G....planned my Saturday around it....along with Thudercats and watching the mighty Brentford at 3pm.

Looking at the thumbnail, it appears as if Jimmy Greaves' attire inspired the Scotland away kit around 25 years later!

Still can't get over Beardsleys goal was chalked off and brought back for a Liverpool free kick!! Unbelievable.
That was a game changer.

I think this was the final season where both the BBC and ITV had the rights to show the rounds of the FA cup.
John Barnes known as "digger" ......... the mind boggles how that name was given
This is glorious. 👏
Love watching these retro shows. And find it amusing that Vinny Jones has more domestic winners medals that Harry Kane.
"The Douglas Bader of football. Great in the air not so good on the ground." You wouldn't get away that today.
Why on earth not? It’s a reference to him being a fighter ace and therefore good in the air.

Sadly Coventry & Wimbledon won the cup & Everton won the league while english clubs were banned from europe.
Southampton and Norwich were also denied European football.
It feels like one big Comic Relief sketch penned by Dame Richard Curtis.
SAINT ..."any tips for Frank Bruno as he prepares to meet Mike Tyson" ?
GREAVSIE..."Yes !, dont turn up Frank" !........
With hindsight, Big Frank should probably have heeded that advice.
@@a.tanner8524 Yeah.
Aldridge decided to save his one penalty miss for this one
Lawro said that Aldo is the best penalty taker for Liverpool, then what happened in the final against the crazy gang, he bloody missed. Ynwa.
