I watched this video years ago and it really inspired me. I still find myself watching it years later because the tones you achieve are just beautiful. It's like your guitar is descending from the heavens and settling like angel feathers as the light through the parting clouds glisten over the waves in a divine, warbling sea.
As a guy with an engineering background and prefers general order amongst most things (including delay pedals), this lesson makes me realize it's Ok not to have a constant tempo across the pedalboard.
Also experiment with bits of reverb in various positions, still following the above rules, but making it decay even sooner or later relative to the delays. Be sure the high end can roll off a little, and also try favoring wet over dry. If you do it right, you'll hypnotize yourself right where you stand!
i swear an engineering background actually harms people more than it helps. i donno if its just the people ive come across (which is a shitload in music production schools) but they all think they have all the answers cause they went to school, and they never really went off the beaten path and discovered things for themselves. i donno if youve noticed that too or not
Andy I just want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You have really been an inspiration to me. These ambient tip videos in particular have been a huge help in figuring out what I want to use and how to use it. Thank you so much
I had to pause this video multiple times because I kept hearing a baby cry and thought it was my son! Love the video and all your tips. Congrats on reverbnerd!
This is exactly what i need to be learning to get a better sound when playing electric guitar for my church! Dude thank you for being smart and also for making all these videos! All i have so far is the echo park, ts9 tubescreamer, boss ds1 pedal, tc electronic polytuner, and the earnie ball Mvp. Looking into getting a reverb, and a loop pedal. Thanks man! This has taught me i have a lot more i need to learn about guitar pedals. A year ago all i knew was distortion and that's it.
Great video. I got this tone with a zoom G5. I stacked mod delay, tape echo and digital delay and used all the settings mentioned. It sounded pretty much the same
josh flex pretty damn cool. I mean, do not expect the exact same result, but it's a nice sound nonetheless. P.s. I added the Neunaber Wet after the G5 for extra angels
For this kind of thing it's pretty handy to have that mix/wet switch on the Echo Dream. Flipped to wet only especially as a first delay makes washed out sound pretty quick and easy. Obvious but just one more thing I dig about that pedal. Sitting next to an El Capistan makes me want to have both again...
1980s guitar student main questions.... What are modes? How do you sweep arpeggios? How did they do that whammy bar trick? 2016 guitar questions... What gear do I need to play one note and let it get morphed into minutes of music? How can I get gear to play more notes than I do? Hey, I enjoy ambient as much as anyone, but it is interesting to see how guitar has moved from Yngwie to The Edge.
You do realise he's basically emulating a synth pad, eh? Have you even listened to his music? He's not trying to show you how to make an entire album with a few notes, he's just showing how a few concepts that once can use, and the music he's created epitomises the use of ambience with other technical concepts. In case you haven't noticed, you don't need to be Yngwie to make good music both technically or in general.
Can't edit well on a phone, but it's not just a synth pad. These concepts he's doing don't have to be restricted to what you think of as several-note songs.
Nothing wrong at all with the Edge. Just pointing out that it is interesting, more so because both Yngwie and him were around back then. However, the same criticism that was handed down to Yngwie copy cats applies to modern copy cats as well. Ambiance is nice but too many players just sound like everyone else. Was a problem back then, still a problem today... just more gear and less chops today.
Jeffrey, I was just making an observation on the overall shift in how the instrument is approached by a bulk of folks nowadays. Your response tells me you read way more than I meant. I actually play in a P&W band and go all out Edge style ambiance whatever. So I was being factual, not critical. But as we know, it is hard to transfer tone here. cheers
Very helpful as usual Andy. Death By Audio put out a new delay pedal that has three individual delay circuits with separate controls that run in series for those looking for a single delay setup called the Ghost Delay. I still would prefer three different delays though for a wider variety of sound.
Just wanted to add...You don't have to spend big bucks on delay pedals to try this out. I added a Behringer EM600 ($49) to my trusty old Boss GT-5 and got great results. Added a totally new dimension to my sounds for very little money!
I appreciate your videos and I enjoy hearing the Lowercase Noises songs on the Ambient Channel on iTunes. I feel like I've discovered an underground band. I have no idea how you do so much with children. I'm trying to get my sound together with one wonderful child. Cheers!
***** Robert Wren strymons are analog inputs that convert to digital. Strymon is popular because they use processors that are normally used for multieffects but for a single unit/effect which is why they are so good. Basically something that is normally doing 1000 things is doing 1
Sans a second/third delay pedal, could do achieve similar result with a looper. I ordered myself on for Xmas so I'll have to experiment with this. Just not right now though 😒
Pretty sure the ED2 is a pt2399 based digital delay, but oh well, not a big deal haha. On a board with both analog and digital, would you run analog into digital or digital into analog? Bright into dark or dark into bright? Finally.......do you recall what you have going on for the little swell you do at the start of these videos?? I love it!!
Hey Andy, I'm trying to play with stacking delays. I have a TC flashback, I'm getting a TC Triple Delay, I'm wondering if you've ever played with the triple delay pedal? Any suggestions how to get some good sound from it? Like your stuff with lowercasenoises BTW!
what's your opinion on using the flash back triple delay because you can use three delay settings at the same time instead of using three separate pedals
Hi Andy ! Would like to ask what delay should I start with ? I have no delay now and been wondering which delay would be suitable for me as a starter delay
Andy- when you play the echo dream pedal by itself it sound like delay but sounds very reverbish too. My delays just sound like delay repeat repeat repeat. I am baffled. Any clues to help my understanding?
+Chris Aguilar Its if you want to play ambient music, shoe gaze stuff. If you're building a pedalboard for rock or punk or jazz or pretty much anything else these videos don't really apply. HOWEVER he does a great job at explaining what all his pedals do and how they affect each other. You can also use ambient sections in any kind of music you make if you want!
Hi Andy great demo as usual. I there any reason in the order you stacked the delays? Does it have to be that way to achieve that sound ie: analog> digital > digital? I have 3 delays, a tc nova delay, a maxon ad10 and a keeley modded boss dd3. What order would you suggest? Thanks.
To be honest, this is just what I preferred after experimenting with different orders, which is really what I suggest you do! Try all the different orders and see which one you like best... you'll learn a lot that way!
+mickey_blue_eyes I'll say use the long repeats pedal last, thats how i use it. Ping pong, and digital sounding delays go first because they add fatness to your tone, and the pedal with the longest repeats and more modulations goes last! But of course, you got to try all your options first
+Andy Othling Hi Andy, Im really happy with my tc nova delay, my digitech digidelay and my zoom g2.1u. Three delays! Yeah they´re all digital but they all have tape emulations, they have multiply types of delay and they sound great. People need to learn to use what they have before going out and buy the expensive big pedals for no reason! Thanks Andy! These tips work on all the delay pedals out there! Delay takes time to master but with practice you will get there ;)
Hi,I have heard a lot of people talking about a quadraverb effects unit;would I be correct in assuming that is just a multi effect with 4 delays combined?
Yeah that sounds good what I did though is put my reverb between the two delays which sounds pretty good but in all honesty just try it in both positions and see which one you like best I just found for playing with a band where slightly less ambience than this video shows is necessary I like the tap tempo one first since it helps keep things in time
I watched this video years ago and it really inspired me.
This is my problem too, when I use multiple delays I just subdivide them (ex. 1/8th note, 1/4 note). Time to start playing with different tempos!
Also experiment with bits of reverb in various positions, still following the above rules, but making it decay even sooner or later relative to the delays. Be sure the high end can roll off a little, and also try favoring wet over dry. If you do it right, you'll hypnotize yourself right where you stand!

Final Light in school and that straight up how it be, gotta do some crazy shit sometimes
I've heard some very prominent producers swear by non synced delays
If only all instructional guitar videos were this well done! Excellent work Andy!
That Echo Dream sounds so killer. I dig the modulation. Nice work.
It dose sound awesome ambient guitar tones can really fill out a great mix
Andy I just want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You have really been an inspiration to me. These ambient tip videos in particular have been a huge help in figuring out what I want to use and how to use it. Thank you so much
3:47 - Souvlaki Space Station
Thanks for your explanation, helps to get my head around the idea of stacking more than two delays
I had to pause this video multiple times because I kept hearing a baby cry and thought it was my son! Love the video and all your tips. Congrats on reverbnerd!
The kid crying randomly in the background kept making me think mine woke up haha...
I kept having to pause it. Lol
Me too!
Great vid. I came here to see what stacking delays could sound like. I got my answer in two seconds and enjoy the 11 minutes left. 👍
This is exactly what i need to be learning to get a better sound when playing electric guitar for my church! Dude thank you for being smart and also for making all these videos! Really a nice guide to stacking delays! Great job!
Great video. I got this tone with a zoom G5. I stacked mod delay, tape echo and digital delay and used all the settings mentioned. It sounded pretty much the same
As a g5 owner, I was just thinking the same thing. Definitely going to try it out :)
+Daniele Sorrenti how was it?
josh flex pretty damn cool. I mean, do not expect the exact same result, but it's a nice sound nonetheless.
P.s. I added the Neunaber Wet after the G5 for extra angels
+Daniele Sorrenti awesome, what type of guitar are you using.
I use a G5 for loads of stuff. loops tuning and stompboxes. Awesome pedal that is amazing after my other pedalboard to loop everything
For this kind of thing it's pretty handy to have that mix/wet switch on the Echo Dream. Flipped to wet only especially as a first delay makes washed out sound pretty quick and easy. Hey man great ambient guitar tone it sounds great I love the delays and reverbs keep up the great work your tones sound awesome

Hey, I enjoy ambient as much as anyone, but it is interesting to see how guitar has moved from Yngwie to The Edge.
I think the Edge had a huge impact on a generation of guitar players with U2's later work so what is wrong with that?
You do realise he's basically emulating a synth pad, eh? Have you even listened to his music?
He's not trying to show you how to make an entire album with a few notes, he's just showing how a few concepts that once can use, and the music he's created epitomises the use of ambience with other technical concepts.

Excellent. Great series on this subject you have put together.
Very cool, great tones! I've had similar success running my Boss Space Echo into a Korg A3....
Great video! Love the sounds of the Echo Dream 2
Very helpful as usual Andy. Death By Audio put out a new delay pedal that has three individual delay circuits with separate controls that run in series for those looking for a single delay setup called the Ghost Delay. I still would prefer three different delays though for a wider variety of sound.

creekster52 the em600 is a copy of this guy's echo park anyway :-P
creekster52 yep me too too I added a $25 Behringer vintage delay after my Andromeda.. makes a huge difference!!
Thank you for your explanation. I have the pod hd 500 and i can get something similar and it rocks. Good work man!
You remind me of Bob Ross. That's a compliment.
How about another happy little delay right here? Just a dab of analog right there, and you can smudge it with some reverb. Whatever you like...
>Bill Vencil has entered the chat
Super cool series of tips, thanks a lot!
That's nice, but sometimes it can get crazy!
I love delay playing I use multi pedals.
Sounds out of this world.
Yeeeah Andy! Very, very, very nice!
I appreciate your videos and I enjoy hearing the Lowercase Noises songs on the Ambient Channel on iTunes. I feel like I've discovered an underground band. I have no idea how you do so much with children. I'm trying to get my sound together with one wonderful child. Cheers!
Great video, man. Thanks for the insight. Very cool.
This series is stellar. Thank you so much. Now I just need that cash to buy some delay pedals..
9:08 beautiful 👌
Dude you rock! Thanks for sharing. I always wonered how to get that sound!
Thanks for the video! Awesome job breaking this down.
each delay gets longer along the chain...nice tip, thanks!
Haha! Just found it! Man You know the game with that delays!
Thank you for information Andy!

Love your tips, mate.... awesome.
sounds great!!!!! but cant you get the same sound with just a reverb pedal over a delay
Kahl Beecher You're asking 2 pedals; he's using 3 pedals.
Kahl Beecher
You'll lack the modulation
Very Cool! thanks for this. I will be employing this with my AxeFX.
Sans a second/third delay pedal, could do achieve similar result with a looper. I ordered myself on for Xmas so I'll have to experiment with this. Just not right now though 😒
Whatever happened to reverbnerds anyway?
This kind of stuffs are Harder than math....but very beautiful!!!!

Great job. Which video are you referring to in the beginning? Wasn’t sure which one you were talking about on your list if videos. Thanks!
THANK YOU for this video. Nice job, good explanation.
How would you discribe your Pedal-Board ???
Echo Dream Park under the blue Sky all on Board el Capistan !
Aye Aye :)
Thank you! This is very helpful.
Cool stuff man.
would you prefereren a tc flashback delay X4 or a normale flashback from tc?
Very very cool trick thanks for this video. Subb'ed
great video man.
Thank you for a great tutorial
the link to your website goes to a generic page :/ super bummed on that man this stuff is rad. Andy Othling
I'm still waiting for the come back of Enya so that this sound will be used more
I fell under her spell.
Who?
I have a Digital Delay. How are an tape cho for ambient sound. El Capistan are really good but im thinking of BelleEpoch
Or you can just get the Meris Polymoon 😊 One of if not my favorite pedal of all time
Andy...........just watched this and subscribed..................would you stack Reverb’s in the same sort of way ?
Have you had any of these ambient bits placed in any media (shows, films)?
Great vid. Thanks
what's your opinion on using the flash back triple delay because you can use three delay settings at the same time instead of using three separate pedals
UGH SO PRETTY...
Hi Andy ! Would like to ask what delay should I start with ? I have no delay now and been wondering which delay would be suitable for me as a starter delay

What about stacking reverbs? Worth my time to try?
Amazing sounds! Are there any other pedals in the signal chain ex.-buffer, compressor, etc?
have you messed with the mxr reverb with the pad setting?
Great video, very well explained. Very straightforward… Subscribe!
6:50 daaaamn thats pretty
Thank you.
You rock man
so the question is why the ambient sounds? sorry im a beginner learning and starting to build a pedalboard.

digital into real tape or other way around?
I have 3 delays.... 2 of them are in the same tempo with a switch...
Damn that’s cool
Yo Andy, cool video. What kind of volume pedal you use?
How would you discribe your Pedal-Board ???
Echo Dream Park under the blue Sky all on Board el Capistan !
Aye Aye :)
Thanks

Do you prefer using effects loop or not?
I don't use effects loops.
00:10 dude, you might want to lay off the delay, you’re bringing me down 😢😂😆
You may have touched on this before, but how do, or would if you don't, include a Reverb with this mix without it getting too muddy?
Hi,I have heard a lot of people talking about a quadraverb effects unit;would I be correct in assuming that is just a multi effect with 4 delays combined?
that shit breathes men!!! gz
Have a question, I have two analog delay pedals and I'm modding one with tap tempo. Should I run the tap tempo first or second in chain? Thanks!
it doesn't matter
I'd say first coz then the in time delay will be effected rather than the out of time one
So first the tap tempo and then the non-tap second?
Here's my chain:
Amp
Yeah that sounds good what I did though is put my reverb between the two delays which sounds pretty good but in all honesty just try it in both positions and see which one you like best I just found for playing with a band where slightly less ambience than this video shows is necessary I like the tap tempo one first since it helps keep things in time
Thanks for your input! I'll give both ways a try.
Whelp....You sold me on buying another delay
Goodbye, Eventide TimeFactor...
AGHHHHHRRRRR!
was there a baby on the background? I thought I was the only one kkk
Do you have an analogue type of delay before the cleaner digital? Do you recommend it one way or the other?
