    I'm a Marine veteran. I also own a SIG 716i. I agree with the sentiment about the 308 caliber. I was a PMI (weapons instructor for non-Marines) I taught all kinds of small arms. However, the 7.62/308 is a very under appreciated cartridge. The 308 is possibly the most versatile of all cartridges. It is not the absolute best in any one category, but it is the most balanced across a broad spectrum. That being said. My SIG 716i is my platform for my SPR/DMR. I would never consider a 16" barrel SPR in 5.56. However, even out of a 16 barrel the 308 is a superior round to the 5.56 out of a 20" barrel by leaps. As a private citizen, this platform makes the most sense for me. I don't need a 20" musket. I can hunt food or defend myself at ranges up to 800 meters effectively. Taking a deer with a 5.56 is not easy nor ethical. Nor is making effective hits (means they are no longer a threat, people hit with 5.56 at those distances are typically un-phased) on enemy combatants at 800 meters. In a SHTF country went to shit scenario, I don't want to engage people. I want to remain hidden and undetected. So, I don't need a fire team compliment of ammo.

    AR10/LR308 is a great platform. It does have some pitfalls that need to be respected. It certainly fills a needed place in a well rounded arsenal.

    If you had the bank for the optic, you should've bought a POF Revolution... Truly ambi lower, and you don't have to change out a trigger, muzzle brake, or charging handle right out of the box, E2 chamber cuts, 5 r rifling, heat sink barrel nut and on and on.

      @@terrarecon the rifle is the heart, the engine. Thats what you spend money on, because someday we may not be able to buy a rifle. I cannot foresee a day when optics are banned. Plus I'll never understand why folks buy something sub par, then mod the sh!t out of it to make it what they should've bought in the first place and spending twice as much in the process. Buy a nice optic, put it on a lacking rifle and you still have a lacking rifle.

      @@nhnikon Thanks, but I don't need a lesson on firearms buying economics. I know what quality is. I handled guns for over 40 years and 10 as a Marine in a Special Reaction Team, and then worked firearms sales. I don't need you to help me see the light.
      I know the value of investing in a quality rifle. But that's not for you or I to decide what that is for someone else. As far as features like an ambidextrous lower and E2 chamber cuts, these are preferences, not necessities. Assuming everyone should prioritize these is you projecting your preferences on them.
      Calling what he bought "sub par" is subjective and kinda looks like gucci gun snobbery. Usually people who intend to "buy once and cry once" still customize their firearms with the same amount of money they intended to save anyway.
      Bro at the end of the day just do you. He bought what he wanted for his collection not yours.

    I got rid of my 308 bolt gun after I started shooting 6.5 Grendel. 308 is a great round but the drawbacks of recoil and cartridge weight led me to the Grendel. I went all in and purchased a solgw rifle and haven't regretted it. Now I just need to do something with the thousand rounds of 308 that I had stocked.

    5.56 Will not over penetrate like a .308 rifle. The 5.56 rifle you can also have more ammunition and light weight, but it's also user preference.

    • @terrarecon
      @terrarecon 10 месяцев назад +5

      You make good points, however, I think in a serious SHTF scenario versus home defense, a .308/7.62 AR-10 is more rounded. I say this as a Marine in that in a SHTF you won't engage human opponents unless absolutely necessary with no other choice, this means less to no engagement as you are more than likely to be outnumbered in a no when situation, which saves ammo. Additionally a SHTF scenario may require hunting for food, an AR-15 can take a deer, but that is usually in ideal situations. How far will you have to track a deer beyond your safe zone to harvest it while enemy patrols are lose by? With a 308.7.62 it usually drops fairly quickly including long shots, that a 5.56 is not going to do well at. Aside from defense from people and the occasional need to hunt, depending where a person lives in the US, larger more dangerous animals may need to defend oneself from. A bear, black, brown, Grizzly is not going down easy with a 5.56 if at all. A couple of shots from a 308 should work on black and brown bears. A Grizzly may need half a mag or more. A S&W 500 revolver would do the trick...up close. I don't want to be up close, a 308 is a better option given the contexts I've presented. Just things to consider because nothing is ideal, and sometimes people forget these other details to take into consideration.

      In the video he covers that sir. (penetration/power)
      556 has its place but I would rather have a little less ammo with the penetration and knockdown power the 762x51 offers. That is why I don’t own an AR-15.
      I went with the AR-10 SASS that I assembled from ground up with advice and insight from DM’s & Snipers I have met in CONUS/OCONUS.
      Personally, I have seen enemy combatants take several hits from a 556 and still be on their feet……I have never seen it with a 7.62…..one and done.

      @@mratliff0511the 308 has a lot of kinetic energy even at range, the 5.56 just cannot compare. For infantry units I can see a lighter weight cartridge being useful, the very reason I went with the 6.5 Grendel. A lot of punch with less recoil and less cartridge weight.

    • @terrarecon
      @terrarecon 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@mratliff0511 Your point regarding, "seen enemy combatants take several hits from a 556 and still be on their feet." This, is what baffles me with sooo many people lead on by some guntubers who give the impression that people with 10.5, 13.7, 13.9, 14.5, 16 etc. are all going to have a, "do all rifle from CQB to SPR roles." It's exasperating to say the least. A a 9mm round shot from a pistol can travel for a few miles. But does not make it ideal, in fact the diminishing return fizzles out beyond 25 yards. In the same way a 5.56 can travel for a couple of miles, yet its effective potential ends realistically from between 300 to 400 yards. A 5.56 out of a 10.5" rifle can go beyond 1000 yards regularly but, again, it's not ideal and is just a waste of ammo. Enter the 308/7.62, apply your previous points and even from a 16" and up barrel the 308 will out perform the 5.56 all day, every day.
      I didn't mean to write all of that. However, the "a 5.56 can do anything the 308 can do out of any length of barrel as long as I have a powerful enough of a scope" mantra is a little annoying, as it precludes having rational gun conversations. I don't hate the 5.56. I have 5 rifles in that caliber. I only have one AR-10 in 308.

    My superior once yelled at me when I said I like the Beretta, not the nine as much as a .45 round.He simply said how dead do you want them? Shot placement is paramount to stop someone.I just look at a .45 compared to a little nine, and just dont understand how a nine could stop a Drago Russian like in Rocky. OH WELL, I HAVE BOTH. A inox Beretta circa 1997, and a Springfield loaded model 1911 circa 2007. Both guns have NEVER given me problems in any way. I prefer stainless, but have a light, accurate LCP nine 7 plus 1 Ruger that is blued,and I almost forget I am wearing it. A REAL pocket pistol that can fit in a pants pocket, the best way to carry is with the little holster that comes with the gun, in my opinion.Much too accurate for a little piece,that is the good thing about Ruger, their product is quality, and after purchase care is sensational, have stories of after service efforts by Ruger reps, no one can beat them in that aspect.MAYBE EQUAL.

    The only thing that sucks is they give you the crappy mil spec charging handle so you gotta buy the special sig ambi charger but whatever.. it’s a great gun a touch heavy but with the rifle length gas system it really has a lighter recoil…not that .308 kicks all that hard but you can really step into it and put some rounds on target..

      Recce rifle is something the British military made up and Navy Seals asopted. A "RECCE" rifle is short for "reconnaissance" rifle. It's a term originating from British military slang, and it refers to a versatile, reliable rifle designed for gathering intelligence while maintaining combat readiness. The concept is useless as far as I am concerned. A weapon, any weapon is dictated by a military units mission loadout requirements. No extra special terms needed. If you need to do CQB, your loadout dictates the appropriate weapon. If you need to do a sniper mission, well, one would use a bolt or SASS sniper rifle. If you need to do a light weight recon mission etc....
