Mikhail Tal shatters the Sämisch

  • Featured is a game between Milko Bobotsov and Mikhail Tal from 1958. In reply to Tal's King's Indian Defense, Bobotsov opts for the Sämisch variation. We observe a case of opposite sides castling in this 30-move encounter. Nowadays it is not so popular a decision for white to castle queenside. There is an important idea to take away from Tal's play in the middlegame. A familiar tactic by white in attempting to take advantage of Tal's unprotected queen on a5 severely backfires in this game. Mikhail Tal is not the retreating type!

Happy 16th, cher Monsieur Jerry. In th 60s, I studied Tal in the descriptive notation. QN-Q2 B-N2, N-K4 Q-B4, BxQP Q-R4, N-B6 ch PxN, PxP R-N1. All those books kept in closed containers. I enjoyed the good years over the chess board. Now, my brain cells are being moved in awkward fashion which will lead a disposable humble pawn to its rational path.

before the game, Tal and Bobotsov played several blitz games, Tal sacrified his Queen in the same position and won. Bobotsov said this was good only for blitz, so he was surprised when Tal sacrified his queen in this long game.

Interesting to note just how many positionally motivated queen sacrifices happen in the King’s Indian, Bronstein’s sac in the Saemisch, Kasparov’s sac in the Petrosian, and Nezhmetdinov’s brilliant sac against Chernikov just to name a few

As a young chess player at my school chess club in UK, Michail Tal was my hero of the chess world - so nice to see his games again and this one with queen sacrifice is so typical of his ability to see opportunities other players would not. Solid defence gives the springboard.

Jerry after Nxd5 what if white just played cxd5? It looks like this keeps the b-file closed, and if Qxd2 Rxd2 the endgame is good for white because if black pushes c4, there’s a huge pawn mass in the center, and if cxd4 then Nxd4 and c6 square is a big hole for black (which wasn’t availible before Kb1 b5 was played)
