    Not many people suit short hair, but damn Abbie rocks it!
    I have recently come across your channel and I am obsessed! It has also assisted me with my practices at the child care centre I work with and the children in my care with special needs.

      heysteph3 I know I swear all her haircuts look cute on her! If I would've gotten a short cut like hers when I was that age 13-14 I would've looked like a lil boy, straight up😂. But you are right Abbie definitely ROCKS it. -and yes I realize this video is about a year old lol I've been binging some of the older ones since I'm all caught up🤷🏻‍♀️🙃

    I noticed you needed to do a lot of redirection while having her set the table and I had an idea: take a picture of the table fully set up and print it out to show to her during the process so that she can visualize the results. That might help minimize her frustration and anxiety.

      Neil K another idea is making place mats. Print off pictures of plates and forks and so on and glue it to construction paper and laminate it. Or same idea with the laminating but Velcro and a fabric that the pictures will stick to it (pin the tail on the donkey but pin the silverware to the dinner setting) this way she can practice and then do it.

      @wt0416 6 лет назад +4

      Neil K what a wonderful idea. Just like she does during the aba therapy. She does ok with pictures, so i think thats a wonderful idea to just take a pic of the table

    • @kwaktak
      @kwaktak 6 лет назад +3

      That's something we actually used to do with my son. We had binders of velcro backed pictures and would involve him in creating a storyboard of the process of creating his ABA sessions. It made them more endurable for him because it engaged him. We created similar play binders like that as well.

      I think that could be good but what if it changed depending on what they were having?

  • @KittyBeeViolinT
    @KittyBeeViolinT 6 лет назад +31

    I don’t know if you would be interested in this but maybe you could make place mats with pictures for each spot to use temporarily until she gets used to setting the table. It looked from a, sees 30 seconds of her experience outsiders perspective, she was attempting to match fork to fork and napkin to napkin. (I’m an educator who works with children with special needs as well as ‘typically’ developing children in the same room)

I know times can be rough when Abbie is having a hard time and you can’t communicate with her to ask her what’s wrong or what she needs it’s hard sometimes I understand, you just gotta power through those moments. I want to thank you guys for sharing your lives with us. I met a boy with autism who reminded me of Abbie the other day. Because of your channel, I wasn't uncomfortable, I didn't hesitate in talking to him, and I didn't feel upset when he didn't respond. My heart was always open to people who are different to myself, but my mind didn't understand so interacting with them always felt uncertain. I'm so happy I found your channel.

    My new thing this year to make mornings easier is I bought a storage shelf and 6 storage bins. 1 for each day and 1 for shoes. On sundays I will put both my girls clothes for the entire week in those bins so come morning, I just grab the bin for that day. I don't have to search for something for them to wear. Its not much but my autistic daughter can be a handful in the mornings. They both started school today and it definitely helped.

    I love that you added a day where receptive communication was down to all but gone. We have rough days like that too, I'm not sure who gets more upset. The kid or the mom. I so terribly hate it when they get "trapped" inside and I'm just speaking chinese. So many more tears. For us summer is always a tricky one, and usually by the end of it we're lucky if we have any receptive days. Also new moons, for whatever reason, if it's a new moon...he can't understand squat. He has to be difficult ya know, full moons don't phase him...the new moon is what gets him. Kid refuses to conform hahaha

    When setting the table, I wonder if it would help if instead of pointing and saying "this goes here" to maybe try and say everybody needs one, put one in your spot, moms spot, dads spot. etc....if you guys always sit in the same seats at the table. that way she can picture where she has to place the silverware or napkins.
    Just throwing it out there..if you try it. let us know how it works!!

    That is one patient Dad! You rock Asa!!! My school tip is meal preps. Every Friday we make a menu for the week and Saturday I will go to the grocery store for the week. Then I dont have to stop nightly. My son gets his clothes and backpack ready nightly and he gets his shower at night too. Lunches are easy for him because he likes the cafeteria food. BTS is on 8/27 for us. Oh, nightly, I also get my clothes ready for the next day as well as getting things I need to take with me to work, ready. In the morning, my son and I can get ready in 1 hour. That includes a home cooked breakfast and teeth brushing for my son and a shower and all for me. It works for us.

    Commenting again later in the blog lolol.... I think it would be good to go old school and make a place mat like they did in kindergarten days with a rectangle set up of the mat. Fold the napkin in half put a fork on it shapes. Big circle for a plate and a small circle for the cup. After a month of putting the items on the shape it might be less stressful. It worked for my Sheila.

    Abby is such a good helper. Wtg mom and dad! It would be easy to let her do that she wants or allow her differences to limit her ability. Thank you for sharing your journey. I enjoy your posts.

    I always try to get up early and stretch for 10 mins and then in theory I’d reward myself with a cup of coffee.... can never keep up with the early wake up call to stretch, I just hit snooze and hastily make my coffee on my way to class. 💓💓💓
