This video literally just helped me too. The tow truck driver told me I needed a “starbit” to remove the lug nuts. Something told me to go to RUclips and I’m so thankful I did because the tow driver had no clue what he was talking about.
I had never changed a wheel on my new VW. I was stuck on the side of the road for half an hour trying to figure this out (after a 12 hour shift) This video rescued me! Thank you so much for uploading.
Holy crap life saver video!! Stranded with a flat and Thought I was going to have to get car towed 200 miles to the dealer for them to change the f-ing tire!!
Thanks, the star shape made it look like it needed a star shaped bit. Also there are other much smaller star screwdriver bits in the VW tcross kit so was even more confusing.
Thanks. I thought I needed a torx bit or something. The auto supply place thought it was a lock. That was after describing it over the phone though. I saw that tool and I didn't know what it was.
For those common folk like me that lose or can't find that tool. A simple cork screw (like a bottle opener) works as well. Twist it in and pull it out.
Thanks for this! -we just went out to look at brake lining before we went for inspection (first time). There was no big Torx bit with the spare! (Sooner or later someone who has a big Torx bit will destroy one of these.) It's my son's car: I'm glad we were forced to figure it out before he has a flat out in the middle of nowhere...
FYI, there ARE some bolts on the car that do use a head like that. When / if anybody goes looking, they sometimes call them “triple square”, but they have several names. I needed one to tighten the hinge on my door. Found a set at Autozone for ~$20
Ironically I'm at the gas station sitting in car eating funyuns when a Volkswagen parked beside me. I said to myself that's the weirdest lug nuts I've ever seen. Turns out just to be covers for anti theft which is cool.
Okay cool! Took my GF's VW to the tires shop for a tire repair (picked up a nail). I was about to raise hell with the shop because I was thinking the tech was trying to steal the locking wheel nut key. They said there was no key for it and they took the caps off with a screwdriver. Haha, oops, ma'bad! I thought it was a star shaped torx bit type of lug nut.
For this, I nominate this man as CEO of VW
I am agree !!!
I am so thankful this video was posted. Amazing that this is here. Helped me in a terrible situation in the dark along side a busy interstate.❤

@@kimtag3304 he kind of did, he just didn't know that the ones on VW are fakes lol, the real ones you would need a special tool for.
I really thought it was the actual lug nut and i needed some kind of special star bit tire iron... Lol, thanks
I just got a ID4, was trying to figure out how to get the bolts out. Nothing on the owner manual. Thanks for the info. Worth a million views

THANK YOU!! I was about to be furious that they sold me a new car without a key for those. 100 points to Gryffindor

For Real but I guess they are cool looking. haha

For. Everything. Vw has been the most difficult car company to deal with
Because Germany that’s why

Holy crap life saver video!! Stranded with a flat and Thought I was going to have to get car towed 200 miles to the dealer for them to change the f-ing tire!!
Thanks! Thought we needed the fancy 9-point wrench.
Thanks, the star shape made it look like it needed a star shaped bit. Also there are other much smaller star screwdriver bits in the VW tcross kit so was even more confusing.

Dude thank you so much, literally stranded and people told me you need a special key but nope they just pop out
Threw me for a good half hour! I have since removed all of the covers, the hated locking wheel nuts and replaced the lot with after market bolts.
Deserve all the likes !
Thank youuuuuu! I was trying to figure it out. I thought it was that little metal piece
Super helpful video! This is not what comes to mind when I think of quality German Engineering ugh
After much swearing because I couldn't find a star bit that fit I found this video, thanks! 🤦♂️
Thanks man this video saved me £150
Good lord man...did they have to do this to us? Thank you dude!!!
Awesome, thanks for the information. I was thinking that it was required a special tool to remove the cap.

Thanks. I thought I needed a torx bit or something. The auto supply place thought it was a lock. That was after describing it over the phone though. I saw that tool and I didn't know what it was.
Thank you for allowing me to stop looking for a torx socket...

Great. By the way the does anybody know if the Wheel Emblems or Caps are they the same size for 2010-2015 Passat and Jetta wheels?
Thanks for this!

When reinstalling the plastic caps do they need to be aligned over the internal hex nut in order to properly seat all the way in?
I really thought that I had to buy a star drive, thanks
I was just told I had to as well.
FYI, there ARE some bolts on the car that do use a head like that. When / if anybody goes looking, they sometimes call them “triple square”, but they have several names. I needed one to tighten the hinge on my door. Found a set at Autozone for ~$20
Nailed it! Thanks

Sir you can easily use a flathead screwdriver to remove those caps.I do it all the time trust me and have a nice day.
Just pointing out how to use the tool that VW provided to remove the caps, but you can use whatever you find handy!
Thanks,
Thank you!
Can I order this anywhere
👍🏻
I wish I would of seen this before blowing a tire at 11pm in middle of nowhere last night
I notice Amazon has two sizes 17 and 21mm. What size are those? Thanks
