BMW E46 M3 SMG Transmission Overhaul

- Refreshing parts on a used 52k mile transmission I purchased that will replace the failing one in my car. It's making whining noises only on acceleration (silent when shifting gears), slipping in sixth gear, and has a fluid leak. I believe the low fluid caused the gearbox to overheat. Fluid was black with metallic shavings and had a watery consistency only after a week with a fresh fluid change. It lasted me 15 years with 235k miles.
Stay tuned for videos on removing/installing the gear box on jack stands!.

This isn't a transmission overhaul video. An overhaul is you going inside and replacing gears, synchros, bearings, etc. This is just maintenance.
Nice Patient DIY ! Good Job
Awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this video together. Sub'd. I see that you have a number of E46 M3 videos and I'm going to watch all of them. So glad I found your channel. I'm not a very experienced mechanic, actually I'm quite novice but committed to fixing my own vehicles so this kind of video is a massive help for me. I got my E46 M3 last year (with just less than 100000 miles) and in hot weather after spirited driving it would take several seconds to shift from second to third and occasionally third gear would disappear from the menu altogether. It would just switch from second to fourth as if third didn't exist. Re-booting the car would bring third gear back...for a while. It wasn't happening often but I was planning on tracking the car so I had to address this obviously. I suspected the compression springs but wasn't sure. The interesting thing that seems to have fixed the problem was running through the post-transmission re-calibration process via a Schwaben OBD scanner ( I believe it's running the same software as INPA ??? not totally sure). It's the process the scanner recommends after doing any transmission work. Anyhow, I was able to reproduce the problem before I executed the re-calibration process and now I can't reproduce it. I have done several track days since and it is banging off the gear changes very nicely. I suspect that I may still have a fault somewhere because I didn't actually fix whatever caused the need for a re-calibration. The root problem may still be in there somewhere. If you have any thoughts about that I would be glad to hear them. Also, how did you run the re-calibration process after your transmission swap? Or was it not necessary ? Thanks again and hello from Canada.
ropehitch it sounds like compression springs if it skips gears. The recalibration probably adjusted for this resulting in it working. Do you have any stored errors? I would try and get a copy of impa (free on internet) and run through the complete 3 step recalibration process that takes around 30 minutes. It will let you know if any errors also. Also, check your SMG reservoir fluid and make sure it’s full and it wouldn’t hurt to change the salmon relay. Do the simple stuff before dropping the transmission. But if you do, change out whatever else you can in the process.
@@PaulVo Thanks for your input. I'll change the salmon relay and look for IMPA before I start getting my hands dirty. Great advice to do the simple stuff first. I don't have any stored errors since the re-calibration but hopefully IMPA will expose a fault. My SMG fluid level is good. I have the compression springs and I've heard that they can be changed after lowering the transmission slightly (without completely removing it). I find the idea of removing the transmission a bit daunting at this point. I've never done that before; I would rather remove my first transmission on a less awesome vehicle in case I screw something up. Anyhow, I was so happy when I saw your demonstration of removing the cap to get to the compression springs. It really boosted my confidence to try it. Thanks again for that video, and for your input.
ropehitch This was my first time swapping transmission out of any car. Wasn’t as hard as I thought. Helps if you have a second car so you don’t have to rush it. But this is totally doable by yourself on jack stands.
@@PaulVoCool! Thanks for the encouragement. That's what I have found with almost every repair that I've done so far: The repairs are totally intimidating beforehand but afterwards I realize it was not that hard. I'm building confidence as a mechanic - gradually getting acquainted with the various subsystems - and actually I find it very rewarding. Wouldn't be possible without guys like you posting their vids on RUclips. So again, thanks.
@@PaulVo The relay advice is a very good idea. If the contacts are not very good then you'll have a high resistance and things don't work properly.
Do you have a part number for the E36 SMG Pink Relay Paul ? Is it the same as E46 ?
Thanks
Fantastic work and thanks for sharing I really enjoyed the Video Sub'ed - Hello from the UK :)
Thank you very much for posting this. All info that I needed.
Lazaro Salazar glad it was useful! Transmission replacements not that hard to do.
A question, if I humbly may! I'm about to unscrew the hydraulic lines, but afraid if the pressure has been relieved in the system.. I pulled the reservoir as apart of the intake mani removal.. thus drained the fluid. As I progressed with the head gasket replacement, I made the decision eventually to simultaneously relocate the SMG unit; I pulled the salmon relay in the fuse box, turned on ignition but didnt start car, and attempted to shift gears but trans wouldn't engage into anything out of N, trans gearbox symbol light is on the dash.. does this effectively mean the unit has been relieved fully of pressure? Just don't want fluid going absolutely everywhere once the lines are fully unscrewed!
Fiat Lux I think you should be good. I recall pulling the relay and was able to shift until I couldn’t any longer due to no pressure and cog light on. When undoing the hydraulic lines, just do it slowly. Some fluid will come out. Good luck.
@@PaulVo thanks man really appreciate your reply & all your priceless videos!
What torque spec did you use when tightening down the spring detent locking device? Part no 23317530787, having hell of a time finding the official spec. Thanks!
Just tighten by feel, it will bottom out and stop moving. Don’t overdue it.
@@PaulVo thank you sir, probably a stupid question.. really appreciate it.
What’s up brotha,
I’m having issue with the gears when shifting into 4th, it jumps right back to 3rd a few consecutive time and goes into safe/limp mode. And then after, the car will drive and just stay at 3rd...
This is a 2005 Bentley Continental Gt but it has the bmw mechatronic type transmission. Let me know what you think please...any response will be appreciated!
Borin Pich need a professional to look at it, but it appears gears are slipping so the clutch/synchros may be worn.
Paul Vo Transmission rebuilt?
Borin Pich may be easier to find a replacement. I looked into rebuilding mine and no one would touch it. Parts are hard to find and no one had any experience around my area.
sounds like 4th gear synchro ring. Mechanical issue with transmission- not an electronic issue. I had same issue on my M3. Not sure there is a fix.
Paul- where did you find a 52K trans. ?
Found it on eBay.
Does the trans have to be in neutral or in gear when swapping springs?
Grab America by the Flaps don’t think it matters . No telling what gear my new transmission was in when changing springs on it.
What kind of gear oil did you use. Do you have a part #
Grab America by the Flaps need two bottles of this www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/75w-90-transmission-fluid-1-liter/83222339221/
Is the 6 speed manual transmission in the E46 the same as what's in the E36 ??
If so, is the fluid recommendation therefore the same too ??
Based on my search it looks like they both use the getrag transmission, the fluid part number is in the description. Double check this to make sure.
