  • Manganelli is a hamlet, part of the village Guardia dei Lombardi, in Irpinia, south of Italy.
This community is rural. Like many others it experienced poverty after the fall of the Bourbon kingdom, after WW2, after the terrible earthquake of 1980.
So many people have left in search of better opportunities and so many more are unwilling to work/till the land.
This has resulted in strong ties with families of people who migrated to the US and Canada, for instance, and who still miss the place and come back to visit.
The Festa of the Madonna is one of the occasions that keep the community together, with people also donating to the church from abroad. There is a procession, music, fireworks and of course, food.
Coincidentally, Guardia in Italian means Guard/cop and Manganelli are Trungeons.
A Madonna of Trungeons cult came about in the 1920s, with the rise of Fascism, who was supposed to be the protector of Fascists who used Trungeons to beat people with.
So in the video I explain it and joke about it.
I it were up to me I would change the name Manganelli. However now the Madonna appears to be holding an orb, and there are only blessings and messages of peace.
The video shows an image of rural Italy being resilient to the changes and attrition of time and economy.
