[Slimekeep Devlog #37]
In this video I added in a new start screen for Slimekeep, which looks awesome in my opinion. I also tweaked a bunch of small things, added some more polish, and added a backstory to the game.
About me:
Hey, I'm BenBonk, an indie game developer who uses the Unity Engine. I've made and released many small games before on my itch page, though now I'm attempting to make my first commercial game, Slimekeep. Slimekeep is a roguelike, using a very limited color palette, similar to Enter the Gungeon, though with a few interesting mechanics, such as keeping slimes alive longer will earn you more money, and the ability to capture slimes to power up your slime pet. If you enjoyed anything you saw, please consider subscribing, as it really helps me out.

thats brilliant
It would be cool if you made a stats screen in the computer and like NPCs with quests
ADD a katana to the game for the player to use because you added a samurai skin
I just met you on discord
Devtip: Secrets are fun, so designing something like as simple as having a 1% Benbonk hairdo on a slime would encourage players to replay the game and discover more.
Yeah, I agree. Stuff like that would be pretty funny
@@BenBonk maybe references to old games?
Or just some random room with partying slimes?
Maybe a room that hints at there being a slime resistance?
@@gongerman9754 I like that last idea!
@@BenBonk you should definitely reference the king slime from terraria
@@gongerman9754 slime doggos partying in a room
This devlog is always a vibe.
Yessir
Suggestion: You should make some sort of notification that pops up on the players screen when the conditions have been met to unlock a certain skin. This will create a sense of accomplishment for the player rather than the player randomly stumbling upon an new unlocked skin.
The start screen looks so good Ben! The samurai with a gun also hits different... (And sounds like it should be a game in itself "Samurai with a Gun")
Blamurai
add pig boss
This was so entertaining! The menu and story panels turned out amazing!
Thanks! Glad you like em.
I think for the slow mo shooting, you should have it for final hit on bosses or mini bosses. Also it could be a wind up shot.
I think the casings that fall should be just slightly smaller. At there current size they kind of draw too much attention. Otherwise, great video! Love the changes!
Suggestion: Change some of the buttons GUI, like in the Skin Select Menu, so they can match a little bit more with the Menu Border instead of being just green blocks with some text on it
Yeah true, I was kinda lazy with hose buttons. Hopefully I can get around to that at some point.
love the devlogs cant wait for it to come out
The start menu art is incredible. I really wish it was animated because it already has so much life and character to it. It represents the game well.
I suggest maybe in the mini map instead of completely hiding the other places you haven't been to or is not in the room to instead make those room have a really dark tint to show that you have not went there yet. And maybe even add a mini-lock, its up to you.
Or it could have something covering it like fog or steel
Just yesterday, I was wondering when you would make another Slimekeep Devlog! Perfect timing.
Yay Devlogs! Slimekeep is looking very good! great job BenBonk!
can't wait for the full release, following this devlog has been wonderful so far :)
keep it up!!
We have come so far in this journey! Congrats!🎉🎉
I love how simple the cover art is, but gets all the basic characters shown and gives you a decent picture of what the game will look like.
The exploding barrels don't feel enough powerful in my opinion and the explosion effect could be improved - Great devlog!
Looking sick
Dude the game is really starting to come together! Great work to you and the community 👌🏻
Make a different screen shake intensity for every weapon! I know it may be tedious but some weapons look very beefy and it would make sense for it to have a bigger screenshake
Great work you are so skilled!!
yay, new devlog!
Looks fantastic! keep up the awesome work
Hey Ben, I love the videos and have been watching the series since the 3rd episode. I would love to see an option in the settings to have the “lore” screen be automatically skipped. Other than that, the game looks fantastic and I’m so excited to play it when it comes out!
Awesome .. very happy to see a good Unity devlog
I love the game dude! I've watched every one of your dev logs and enjoyed them all! Keep up the good work, and I can't wait to play this game!
I really like the art style, keep it going!
I think the tnt box’s explosion would look better if you made the screen shake similar to when you shoot a weapon but a little bigger on impact.
It’s amazing to see how far this game has come.
I love these videos I wish you could keep adding updates so there could be more devlogs❤
I always get super excited when you upload a new slimekeep devlog. Slimekeep is awesome.
something that could help so that you dont need to make a new sprite for each panel(e.g ui panel, mini map panel, weapons panel) is to make a sprite a 9-slice
Great devlog. I really like the start screen art, it really suits the game.
One thing that could be nice to add, since the game is monochrome, is a setting for different color pallettes, and could make for more unlockables.
Another great devlog!
I'd add the weapon's screenshake to the TNT explosions too
Nice work
maybe similar to the new floor tiles you could add some sort of depth to the outside of the rooms, its just very plain right now but apart from that im loving how this is turning out
Keep doing a great job
I just saw the thumbnail, and I am already excited!
I can’t wait to get it
The game is looking so damn good, I’m loving the progress. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help out with the game, I really like your content! Keep it up 🙏
The legendddddd
Beta did an incredible job on the panels, great video! :) 👍
Well it was really thanks to beta for making such great art, but thank you
the small change to the floor makes it look less empty and alot better f
You should make the start screen in color when the game is finished.
YEAH! NEW VIDEO!
I can't wait for the game to come out
Same
THIS IS SO EPIC
AGREED
Reminds me of MoonKnight that came out a little while ago. Love the intro screen.
That so cool nice
you know it's a good day when BenBonk uploads a video
I’ve Ben flowing all the devlogs the second they come out
Great so far, I would like to reiterate that references and Easter eggs make me smile is virtually any form of media, and that text should be used sparingly, but great so far!
The buttons (Like in the charcter customization) look kind of bland... do you think you could use either the old or new checkerboard pattern around the buttons? I think that would look cool.
My idea is that the prologue should play whenever you make a new game i do love this game so keep uh idk your doing great though!
You should make it an option to turn off slow mo med when you shoot
He infact did make a start screen for his game!
I suggest adding more variety to the wall tiles and add some floor obstacles to make it look less empty
Love your videos
I would really love to see skins for the pet that correlate to the skin that your currently wearing
Hell yeah!
Gotta love how the "make explosions leave craters and have bullet casings eject." suggestion was implemented into the game, it makes me wish game development for every game was as community involved as you've allowed it to be.
Keep up the great work, this game looks sick!
This game looks really unique and cute, but i cannot stress enough how "off" mixed pixel sizes look. It will make your game look so much more professional if you make certain all pixels are the same scale.
And just a suggestion for the bullet counter UI element in the bottom right, you could have a fixed distance between bullets and a fixed amount of maximum visible bullets. With this change guns with 10000 bullets (hyperbole) wouldn't just gel all the bullets together in one big green slush, and you can clip off those excess bullets (only show 10/10000). So, show the top 10 bullets and maybe play a fade out / slide to the right animation on them as you shoot, sliding
the bullets further upwards like a real magazine. You could also fade out the opacity towards the bottom to give the effect that there is "more beyond"
You should (if you want to) add a bestiary to insert lore about all the enemies and what they do and the best way to defeat them.
You should add screen shake when the tnt explodes
Dang the logo looks sick
you should add a "endless" mode where the slimes come in waves and in between waves you can upgrade your stuff and adding a new skin for the player after you beat "x number of waves"
I think you should add some decorations on the walls because they look really plain
add the slow motion shooting as a setting it would be neat to use from time to time
You should look into the intro to the first Dungeon Defenders. I could be helpful for some inspiration.
I have a boss idea. Make a giant red to yellow gradient slime which shoots yellow orange and red paint on the ground which would act like poison, maybe makeing a red small slime as minions. When you kill the boss the rewards are a red or yellow slime one good the other bad he has a 50\50 chance of getting a good weapon.
New UI looks awesome! Slowmotion is for me not enjoyable.. So maybe add it also in the settings to turn it off or on? The Panels looks fantastic, does this mean there will be lore in the game? Or how about adding multiplayer in it if possible. With LAN or Online friends where when adding more friends which will increase the difficulty of the game
Not sure if this was clear, but it was just something I messed around with. It’s not in the game as of now. About lore, there definitely will be some, and is some right now, but nothing too crazy. And yeah, multiplayer would be awesome but I just don’t really think it’s in the game’s scope right now
@@BenBonk Thanks for the answer, Multiplayer would probably be fun to play but likely chaotic for you and the players. Keep it up, man!
is the cut scene at the start sped up? (in the edit) cause if not i feel like it should be a bit slower because the slime bouncing animations and such look a bit to fast in my opinion. also i love the new floor design
Hey early squad! so happy! Keep up the good work Mr. BenBonk great content and I really enjoy all of the work you do!
Thanks :)
I have an idea for a multiplayer mode, probably released afterwards in an update or DLC:
2-4 players spawn on a grid of rooms looking something like this (each player spawning in a room marked as 'P'):
P
OOO
POBOP
OOO
P
Then all the players race to gain as many slimeballs as possible within a time limit of ~5 minutes. The center room contains a boss that can be defeated for a huge amount of slimeballs. The key is: PvP is enabled and players drop slimeballs on death (you would respawn in your home room though). Whoever has the most slimeballs at the end wins, possibly rewarding them with a special outfit or achievment.
I would like the TNT boxes explosion to be bigger like for example a small shock wave because the explosion is looking quit small looking now
Slime lore! Great stuff!
I think in the cut screen panels with the least amount of text it seems a bit empty maybe you should center the texts
Ima quickly morph the space time continuum to play this game right now
When the world gets really corrupted, so much that the fountain has a 100% chance you damaging you the fountain should be dried up with no liquid.
I love that the UI design I put together ended up determining all the rest of the UI. Feels good.
Haha yeah
What a cool game
I sure do hope nothing bad happens to it on July 9th 2024
it’s finally happening
will there be a toggle for the post-processing effect thing? (like how you can toggle the filter in the binding of Isaac rebirth)
Added some screen shake when the TNT explodes.
DEVLOOOOOOG
Really great stuff. What if you could grab the title and stretch it around like Mario's face in the Mario 64 title screen?
Which app do you use to make these pixelated thingies? (the ones on the others videos like the samurai one)
Aseprite
@@BenBonk Thank you!
A gun with infinite bullets would be cool even if it is right ast the end of the gasme or it is like the final weapon it would be a really cool addition
give different perks/abilities for each characters
Noice!
you should make the boss skin description to say "deafeat the ??? boss" and only change it after the player saw him so it wont spoil the bosses
Always love these, am always looking forward to these. However tho, that checkerboard border doesn't really look the best. I like the first idea first just because the simplicity goes a long way. We want the people looking at the menu that opened, not really the border. Toher than that, the game just needs a little bit of animation polish, but then would be perfect!
0:46 BRAZIL MENTIONED 🎉🎉
it would be cool if the player had a choice to capture or kill the bosses and a way to somehow make a cure for the slimes and a way to slow down the corruption and have a normal mode when you defeat the slime king and one final slime pet skins.
ngl the grass makes the game look sooooo much better
wait... I'm making a game called slime's passage, which is a platformer game were you play as a slime, SAVING SLIMES THAT HAVE BEEN CAPTURED (obviously completely unrelated to your game but I just think its a funny coincidence)
That’s it, I’m suing you
@@BenBonk I don't have that kind of money...
Easter egg idea: on Mac builds only, add a “Macintosh mode”, which just makes the game monochrome green.
Cool
