The ML320 from 2000 to 2002 are great trucks, the 1997 to 1999 had many issues that were corrected with on the newer models, the electronics to control the traction work great, I also have done off roading with my 2001 ML and the only thing you have to protect is the gas tank, I added metal plates to protected

Those are factory 275/65 R16 or 275/65 R17 depends on year model but if you want to install bigger tires you need to lifting, front suspension is easy but rear you need shock spacers and you can go big tires
