We FINALLY Put It On A DYNO!! - Kubota Ranger Turbo Diesel
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 авг 2018
- Its DYNO DAY! We threw the ranger on it to find out just how much horse/torques its actually producing out of its little transplanted power plant. Spoiler.... its less than we expected.

That dude riding with you wanted that lil ranger to kick some ass. He was casually trying to know more about it.
Dont be discouraged fella!! Most Goals we set rarely get met the first time, fix what issues need fixed and give it another go!! You got a nice looking truck there and once the little KUbota is 100%, im sure you'll hit your mark!!
The smoke never clears on the top end. Wire that waste gate shut or find the boost leak.
Coolest build I’ve ever seen, been having the same idea for years and it’s cool to see such a clean example
Bring it to texas we can fix that hp
Got a real video of you actually making this type of kubota make more power? if so and it's not highly edited to death, you could have a serious party wanting your help.
@@WhitfieldProductionsTV I have teachers that knew these engines in and out. We were gonna make a mini dragster that was gonna have a kubota or yanmar but we got busy and lost a teacher to cancer. Still plan on doing some stuff with the kubota engines down the line. If you want to really go big on making power industrial injection might be able to help
3 cylinder kubota in a ranger?.... sign me up.... I want one....😄
For an at the wheel measurement, that is really not that bad for a small 4 cyl diesel. It is no hot rod, but with the right rear end, it should be respectable, and deliver a lot better fuel economy.
A little more boost might improve that as weell.
We suspect there is a boost problem. Used to read 30 psi on a pull, now won’t get to half that. Not sure where the problem lies, but we suspect if it’s fixed it would perform much better.
I have a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 liter Turbo Diesel 4x4 ( not the Ford 2.3) and it has 86hp 134 lbs of Torque from the Factory. the 2 wheel drives had a 2.2 Perkins Diesel with 59 hp and 90 lbs of torque so unless the pump is turned way up don't except huge numbers on that Kubota ;)
The 2.5 liter ranger from factory makes 80hp to the crank
Actually makes 119
Then how does my 2.3 make 150?
@@ratherbefishingrn it don't if it's stock.
@@bruceclark5627 it absolutely does if it is dohc
my respect jumped way up after i found out its a 3 cylinder.
Well you are making 200 lbs of torque at the engine, which is good for a three cyl. diesel.
That’s not bad at the wheel and it’s only the beginning because the upgrades are almost limitless (providing parts availability) or use of other parts like the vw turbo
just because the melting point is 1400 F, doesnt mean you have to stop there. ive seen a 24v cummins run 1800 for a few seconds before letting out. i have run my 7.3 at close to 1600 for a few seconds, no problem. but a bigger turbo would flow more air, in turn giving you cooler egts. same as a 5 inch straight pipe gives you cooler egts than a 4 inch
Seems like that fan should be on, def running rich through the pull
Its was you're just too dumb to understand how frame rates work.
The interesting thing with these diesels isn’t record crushing power numbers, but doing more with less. Id say it’s a sport of finessing the most out of a motor between more power and efficiency out of units of diesel (which is a more potent denser energy than units of gas). In all honesty, if it weren’t for the EPA and if more people knew or were even persuaded about these capabilities like the government tries to push EVs, it would probably make EVs obsolete. But that’s not in their agenda.
Try a s248 or s257 borg warner turbo i think one of those would be perfect. And 25 psi on that turbo is out of its efficiency range. Max should be 18.
I love your ranger built its unique. If anyone is wondering my stock 96 4x4 4.0 ranger makes 145rwhp and 170ft pounds of torque
What's your fuel mileage?
Hp is rpm dependent. Tq is what you want.
Ford ranger in Brasil, came stock with Diesel engines. 2.5, 2,8 ,3.0 and now 3.2. The best one was the 2.8 powerstroke. 140 hp and good fuel economy
where can you get a 2.8 powerstroke at?
Austin Johnson try (mercado livre) its a brasilian web site , similar to ebay or craigslist.
@@tiagoribeiro683 so i looked up the fund rate exchange from Brasilian to american dollar and its like 0.27 to 1. does that sound right or no?
How much juice will you extract from this tiny kubota diesel engine 😂
Ain't nothing better than the smell of diesel
Except nitro.
Some hate some love it! I LOVE it
Dyno the Fummins i am so curious to what it would make!
I keep telling him this! Mike says “what’s the point, it’s stock, let’s dyno it after some mods...”
Shifted Interests you should do before and afters i think that would make for great content! Start dyno stock then do some mods then dyno again and see how far those mods got you
Haha dude this is really cool
How many mpg are you getting?
Time for bigger turbo! Smokey
Rangers, dodge d-50, mitsubishi mighty max, Plymouth arrow, and Chrysler prospector all came with Mitsubishi 4d55 2.3l and later 4d56 diesels. My 4d55 d-50 was rated at 89hp and 130lbs of torque. Some guys in Europe raced a 4d55 galant that they got 200hp out of. Just curious why you went with the kubota instead of finding a 4d56? It’s still pretty cool.
All that smoke...poor engine is gasping for air. A lot of power is going right out the exhaust. Getting that boost problem fixed will get you some nice improvements.
"Was this truck green before?"
"Yeah"
"Ehhhyeah I know what truck you got"
.....one that was HOUNDED!!!!
I love how you can SEE the exhaust pulses during the run. Seems like one pulse is clearer than the others... injector going south??
Injectors still seem to be working just fine 🤷🏻♂️
@@ShiftedInterests I was just curious if what I was seeing is just an effect of the pulses from a 3cyl... or if something is wounded, and its just not shaking bad enough to let anything take a walk.
If that's all she wrote, cool. It's a neat little rig, good starter diesel. Setup a homebrew plant at home to recycle cooking oil, you're set.
i actually started to look up a 2.2L perkins ford ranger
sadly but i can buy a 99+ 250/350 7.3L powerstroke much cheaper $2k
Where the hell can you find a 7.3 for 2k? It must be literal shit lol. A nice one with 200k in my area is still 10k
Lol
@@Dirtlife98 I just snagged a 7.3 with a bunch of power mods and a 410 posi rear end and fresh top and bottom end rebuild just needs clutch kit and just had to put a new driveshaft in her shoes deffinatly what I'd consider a sleeper ,,fugly sleeper totally abused though.body and frame wise
Powerstroke
Elliott Bull no 7.3 with 200K is 10K unless its been completely gon thru... engine rebuild trans rebuild 4x4 works and no rust with no body damage
It's still awesome 👌👏👍
Isn’t having a gas tank in your cabin , wrong ? Or whatever the black thing where you put the windshield .
If you are referring to the methanol water tank, that is windshield washer fluid (water meth mix)
Not gas. Not flammable. Not dangerous to have in the cabin.
In Brazil the ranger’s diesel engine option was 2.5 l maxion turbo(110cv), maxion powerstroke 2.8l with 135cv and 3.0 international mwm powerstroke eletronic with 163cv.
I found a partial kit to put a kubota diesel in my 1982 Toyota pickup, and this was just what I needed to find. Does that truck make highway speed?
Didnt know jon snow owned a ranger... makes sense since hes always wanted to be o e
Pretty good . just stay away from Inwood costume
Whys that? Lol
is there an inwood costume shop? have to tell pug to stay away from the costume shop people dressing up. blahhhhh. guess I will go to inwood customs
We came here for the dyno not the tractor pull
It’s all custom or homemade. So cost depends on how much you can do yourself and what parts are easily available in your area.
It all depends on what’s done to the truck. I don’t think we even have 2.4 power strokes here, so we don’t know what kind of pricing that would be reasonable.
Any swap done right costs a good chunk of money, but it will differ based on location and what’s available locally to you.
Spoiler it’s 72 hp 168 torque on the first run 75.5 hp 176 torque on second run
Jake Middleton. wrong
Keyboard warrior Hitman no the numbers are correct
So its like a pushrod 4.0 v6
@@theejoeylee with better mpg
This engine was originally made for Tractors made by Kubota. If it was found in a smaller car, 75 Horsepower might be enough for that.
was this truck green before? LOOOOLLLLL!!!
What transmission does your Ford ranger have and what were the modifications that were done to make this fit as well as what model engine
What's the size of the engine in the ranger? Unfortunately my little 1.9l tdi makes more than that. 🙃
What type of mpg do you get?
About 70-75 horse and double that for torque
Yea....3cyl diesel with just a turbo isnt gonna be huge numbers maybe great on torque oand fuel
Christopher Hampton fuel economy only.
What about my friends 3-53T Detroit ranger his makes 201 and 388 lb/ft
@@Project-gr6zy well a Detroit is twice size of this engine
true. I wouldn't mind 32mpg in my 17mpg f150 Triton turd. lol
What engine and transmission are in it
I'm sure it gets better mileage , but my 4 liter has 220 HP and I'm not sure I want to trade that for 76 HP .
The interesting thing with these diesels isn’t record crushing power numbers, but doing more with less. Whats your top speed?? And how well does it shift?
Was this Matt's old green truck that used to run around Norwhich?? Used to have block letters that said "Kubota Turbo Diesel"??
fun times 🚜 🚛
You should twin turbo it. Put a slightly bigger one on
That might be a little overkill for this little kubota. The temps seem to be the limiting factor at the moment. (Although that might be due to a small turbo?)
Shifted Interests twins = MOAR AIR!!!!!
Nicholas Murphy idk about all that on a Kubota man 😂
@@ShiftedInterests add an intercooler
Turn up your pump better injectors take the head off and port and polish
Maybe spray soapy water on your tubing to find air leaks.
Time to put a 4bt in it
A badass 2.3 Turbo 4 would be a better swap.
The Mitsubishi 2.3 turbo diesel rangers are hard to find
weighs as much as that kubota 3 banger.
How much did it cost you total?
im just curious how you wired the cpu what u used for flywheel and spacer
It's Hank from breaking bad.
You Look like John Snow of Game of Thrones
Yeah, but for small lightweight high speed diesels you could use for conversions, why not Yanmar. They are really smooth, robust and high pressure common rail versions [you gotta chip them though] come this size as well. Or is it a money thing? These Yanmars pull really good under high loads though and almost no smoke.
It isn’t no high hp truck but I bet it gets like 50 mpg.
Dope truck man but two things need done. 1. Replace the mirrors with the newer square ranger mirrors, they look sharp. 2. Paint your bumpers black or add custom offroad bumpers (painted black). 3. Either smoke your tail lights and rear cab light/bar or replace them with halo/euro lights like your headlights. 4. Add basic mid or deep dish black rims for stance. Lastly, 5. They make clear lenses for the cab lights you added on top of the truck. Buy some, use vhs nite shades spray to smoke them just a light bit. Boom… Lit diesel ranger.
Damn things quiet!
Holy fuck that things a dog lol
Cummins 4bt stock is doing better than that crazy
Its a tractor engine 40 hp stock. It will out last a 4bt
I say about 90HP and Torque.... ill say 100 or 200
My 92 was stock 145hp 3.0 V6
I understand its a year old but I'm new here so I'm guessing 150 hp and 300 ft/lbs
There is no such thing as hp to tq ratio. Hp is calculated from tq and rpm smdh.
I'm trying to find a follow up to the possible boost leak fix. Did you ever find a boost leak? Did you re-dyno it?
The project is currently on hold due to the extra work for farmers currently. We will hopefully get to finding that boost leak this winter when the farming slows down.
@@ShiftedInterests curious what your farm services are…?
100-ish hp and about 250-ish torque
Always wanted to to this to my ranger. Forever jealous
1million hps with peak torque when the engine is off and cold.
Why did you choose the kabota over the 1.9t vw diesel?
mechanical injection
Put a slightly smaller tire on there and you'll see a jump in numbers
Jon Snow would have a diesel...
Wild guess 250 hp and 350 ft lbs of torque?
That's not bad for 134 cubic inch.
Not really that good other than novelty value. My stock 145.8cid normally aspirated Nissan frontier gas engine makes 142hp and 160lb/ft and pulls over 26mpg overall.
It could easily surpass 225whp and 300 lb/ft with a turbo.
Cool project though. They don't always have to make sense to be cool.
I hope he is getting well over 40mpg to even make it worth it.
My duratec 2.3L Dohc ranger makes 320HP 275 lb/ft to the wheels gonna turbo charger soon
No it doesn't.
@@zach4185it's the cosworth model duratec HE4 I've played with tuning some more and dual ram intakes www.burtonpower.com/omex-320-bhp-2-5-ford-duratec-rwd-aluminium-raceline-sump-d25vvc071a.html
Hey man, nice project. Do you know which Kubota engine it is and the displacement? Did you source the engine new or was it pulled from a tractor?
It is from a Reefer trailer. V2203
@@ShiftedInterests Great, thanks!
@@ShiftedInterests that surprises me…most refers from around this area are 4 bangers….(cal emissions take outs)
A V2203 is a 4 cylinder
Great video keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Freaky video. Driver looks thirteen passenger looks like Chris Hansen would tell him to take a seat.
Dyno the duramax
I wonder what my 2001 5.0l ranger is doing
It’s safe to assume that yours is a wee bit more than the kubota when it comes to power numbers 😂
@@ShiftedInterests I think 3 of my 4 stock 2.3l rangers from 92-97 beat you too. 4th started acting up and has no take off power. Also my 86 2.9l, 93 4.0l ohv, 01 and 04 4.0l autos. 03 4.0l 5sp 4x4 svt edition, and 97 ranger cobra all beat you too. Lol. And no I don't just got nothing but rangers. I got 7 other trucks including v8 s10, f550 crew, 430hp 383 stroker 91 chevy 1500 and 2 other 1500 truck projects....1 a 4x4. And also a BMW roaster for getting groceries. Lol. Wasn’t expecting a complete and entire vehicle inventory..... but ok🤷🏼♂️ cool beans
@@SgtJoeSmith Your bio literally says your 12 so cut the shit lol
@@landondale8305 are you my daddy?
I was way off lol
What's the mpg?
We calculated it in a previous video on this channel. I don’t recall off the top of my head what it was, but it was really good.
for whatever reason youtube global elitist algorithm seems to not like "horsepower" like firearms 5:00
I'm 0.05 seconds in....and I have NO IDEA what kind of "Kubota" engine is in the Ranger. I'm guessing it's small displacement.
...But I'm gonna guess on the conservative side:
250 hp
450 lb.ft. torque
i want someone to put a turbo on a 1980 ish kubota inline 3 diesel front loader
mine has a RF2.2 liter 4 cylinder diesel.original to ford and mazda trucks.not American spec.
Not a diesel guy, I’d say 260hp and 430lb-ft
Nothing better than a ranger
Not reading any comments or watching yet........80/140?
94 hp &274 tq
I will guess 130 hp and 207 lbs/ft tq
So your using water / meth injection?
90hp
205torque
Are u going to do anything else to her? Like smoke the cablights/tail lights, new mirrors, maybe some engine mods?
It’s hard to say...... we have nothing in the plans at the moment but a project is never truly finished! Mix free time with boredom and things may happen.
120 HP & 220 torque
80 hp, 200 ftlbs torq
I'd say like 75hp and 150tq
My guess is 100 hp an 290 ft #'s
