- Our client came to us a few months ago wanting to put a 2019 Ford crate Ecoboost motor (Only 5 in the world were made) into his longtime beloved 2005 Ford Ranger. We weren't sure if it could be done at first, but we were up to the challenge. Hundreds of hours later, brand new engine, and brand new twin-turbos, we have this beauty. Curious to see how it stacks up against a twin-turbo-boosted 2019 Ford Raptor with the same engine? Watch this to find out. We put these trucks to the test with a 0-60, drag racing, and speeding down the highway to find out which truck is faster. Is the engine swap worth it? Only one way to find out. Ultimate swap right here man. Eats raptors for all meals of the day but still get pretty good gas mileage. Sweet setup guys.

I would love to do that swap, or even a V8 swap would be a riot, but it would no doubt cost at least 5 times more than what my truck is worth.
Just saw this. Is your FX4 strictly street driven and how many miles? My 05 Edge extended cab,4 doors, 2wd has 95,000 miles, street driven, original shocks, replaced front sway bar links, 4X4 rear sway bar added is steady as a rock at 100 plus. I never let my Michelin Defender tires exceeded 7 years old, never wear them out ); A lot of variables can cause shaking.

I have a 2003 Ranger with the Vulcan 3.0 130k on the clock I bought it for a project it's lowered on blocks I would love this build in my truck!! I've even seen it coyote swapped which was nuts

NOTE: the 2.7 is faster than the 3.5 from factory.
But I beat tuned raptors all the time. They’re a bit heavier than my F150 but I have the 2.7 just intake and exhaust and I get them pretty easily. To be fair I don’t think every Raptor owner races their trucks on the street like I do, not sayin I’m a professional; I’m just very comfortable with my truck. My 0-60 time is almost two seconds faster than the ranger so I think we’d be a good race. I have a good gear ration too so I’d like to see how we’d do top end. I’ll definitely get him in a quarter mile but top end I think I’d want to be tuned before we roll race like they did.

I have a tuned 2017 F-150 3.5 ecoboost and it’ll do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds.
Def not bullshit. I have the same truck doing 4.8 seconds with 3.55 gears. The 2017 3.5 is way lighter than the Raptor so it’s faster 0-60 especially when tuned.

Frank White you must not know much on these vehicles. The explorer sport has a transverse engine whereas the F-150 has a longitudinal engine. The F-150 engine makes 375hp and 470tq stock whereas the Explorer sport makes 365hp and 350 tq. Stock 2017 F-150 does 0-60 in 5.8 - 6.1 depending on trim level (weight) seconds. Stock 2017 Explorer Sport does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. 1/4 mile F150 is about 14.7 seconds and the explorer is about 14.4 seconds.
Ryan S tuned vs tuned the F150 setup is much quicker and can handle the power without failure. The weak link is the transverse setup.. it can’t handle the power like the F150 can.. also, the f-150 setup tuned with E85 and with an upgraded fuel pump (everything else stock) runs 11.60 quarter mile. Tuned on 93 gas (safe daily tune, not race) it’s running mid 12s. Race tuning it’s running low 12s. 2017 F150 dyno at tires results:
Stock - 330 hp / 415 tq
93 Gas- 469 hp / 533 tq
E50- 553 hp / 617 tq
Race Gas - 550 hp / 630 tq
The E85 results I couldn’t find at the wheels but was said to have about 700 hp at the crank. Which isn’t unrealistic considering the GT MKII is making about that.
Trey K yeah the f150 3.5 ecoboost is legit. Also the dyno numbers are always hindered because people have to run it in 5th gear rather than 7th which is 1:1. The truck with hit the limiter in 7th before it redlines. Ones that have been tuned to remove that show way better numbers in 7th vs 5th!

Hey am youngster who loves driving my dads trucks n cars, and he's owned abt 22 diff. Rangers that I know of, and I love them really they just go and go and go in the sense they last long and cheap to repair, ohh and have they have some of the coldest A/C when maintained, just wanted to mention that cause I have driven brand new cars and trucks and the A/C doesn't get as cold as a Ranger's can
I miss my 01 ranger xlt even though i had the shitty 3.0 vulcan engine with 146hp. Really loved the late 90s to final gen rangers.

PLEASE talk about making the 10 speed auto work in the ranger. I didn't think ford allowed the auto for swaps.
We used a 2x4 10 speed automatic from a car.

Were they both using the same transmission as well? 6 speed? I really like that close ratio during the shifts with the Ecoboost
2nd gen Raptors have 10 speed trans.
Not sure what in ranger, but I'm sure there's also a way to adapt from 3.5 boost to the 5R55E's that come in the ranger Edges. The 5R's are relatively reliable and strong. It would be worth building one to put behind a 3.5 boost.

It' lighter than the raptor no surprise here. I had a 4.0l ranger supercab stock 2wd that would blow a hemi ram away. even the 4 cyl from the turbo coupe thunderbird hauls ass if you put it in a ranger All you guys with your full size trucks with V-8's better look out when i get my ranger built just with turbo coupe motor stock! Long live 1983-2011 Ranger

Jody yep. It stayed cool luckily. It’s a lot of heat in their. But the fan moved enough air and we tried to make areas for heat to escape.
I don’t get how he can say his truck has only 145hp and 150ft/lbs when it has twin turbos.. that thing ain’t pushing those numbers with twin turbos.. my 4.3l is 200hp stock (might be 165 it’s in the years where it could be either) idk I guess I could be wrong but I think he’s trying to make it sound like a sleeper lol.

That 3.5 v6 twin turbo is a great motor... just such as shame it sounds like a typical v6 auto slush box. Much prefer a v8

Currently my 16 ecoboost 4 door 4x4 truck with nothing but a tune with a 3:31 gear ratio is slipping 4.8 seconds 0-60 and a 12 second quarter mile time. I can’t imagine what the new ones are doing. I used to be a die hard v8 guy but man I can’t deny the ecoboost is insane for what it is.

They did but not in the United States. They also had diesels.
They sold them in mexico in a 4 door among other places. Same body style as the one in the video.

Now they do, but they're expensive as hell. It costs a lot more than the older Rangers, and they have smaller beds. But since they have ecoboost engines, there maybe a lot of room for some modifications or swaps.
I have a 2003 Ranger extra cab , it has 4 doors , but the rear ones are suicide doors . Are you talking about having full size rear seats instead of fold down seats ?
Those are definitely impressive engines but man the lack of exhaust note makes me want to laugh. I think I would still need a V8 just for the sound.

Can't agree more and well said. Would take the ranger anyday and it just sounds right in that thing, but not in that big ass raptor. Still waiting for a 6.2. till then pretty happy with my good ol' V8.

That's awesome, I'd love that swap, my 4.0 is relatively low miles I'd imagine a pretty good twin turbo kit could be cool with the stock 4.0 too...maybe the more seasoned actually after with more miles idk, could be better probly than the 4thousand dollar+ eaton m62 supercharger kits tho. 🤷🏼♂️💪🔩🔧🤙

I would love to have this ranger only thing I would trade out is the auto for a stick shift not because it's faster but it's more interactive and typically funner to drive
I got a 08 ranger and it's super fast with the 4.0 six in it. Not as fast as this one, but I got little under 8k in my ranger vs the cost of that raptor. If your not made of money or just dont see the value as in my case then buy am older model and personalize it to your liking. For the price of the raptor you could get all the updated luxury shit installed for half the price of the raptor.
It really makes me wish we got the ranger raptor here in the states

Those weren’t the correct numbers for the 4.0 that was in the ranger, you gave the 3.0 specs. The 4.0 has 207hp

As a 2019 raptor supercrew owner, I would not trade that in for any other truck on the market right now. I just had some work done to it to hold maxtrax boards, extra spare, pro whale big wheel jack, krazy beaver shovel, had some bed support installed too, even had a custom bike rack welded on to the spare tire rack. I have owned and own multiple sports cars and I have never, ever, loved a vehicle as much as I love the raptor. We bought that sucka brand new in March of 2019 and already have 30k miles on it. I would much rather have a v8 but that isn’t an option and this v6 twin turbo is beating every single other truck that I race on the road.
450hp and 0-60 in the mid 6s.........ouch lol.

john russo that motor and trans is at least $20 in a crate not installed. It’s $30 to get a crate 6.4 Hemi with trans put into a Jeep JL. If this is that cheap I’d be very surprised.
Get your self a junk yard 6.0 put GT3 stage two cam internet turbo kit off ebay I thnk 4500 later you could have easy 600hp with a HD trans

I have a 1994 that I'd love to drop a larger motor into. It has the 2.3 and a manual tranny, but looking to put a 4.0 or 5.0 Mustang motor into it. This got me juiced to do it!

I’m a Chevy guy but I love the old Ford ranger body style. The engineers definitely hit the nail on the head with that body style. I’m also a huge square body fan. I’m not a fan of the engine size though! Haha
