I removed my awlgrip completely and found a line between original gelcoat and original waterline. This was original factory line. My actual waterline was about 2" higher then that so i put 2" 3M tape to line up with it. Sand a patch and see if you have it too.
I'm wanting to paint my damaged wooden floors. I have last chance rescue dogs. I'm looking for durability and asthetics. Want environmentaly friendly. Could you tell me what would work. Someone said they used marine quality for salt water boats but would not give details. Any ideas?
Hi great videos as usual, can you please tell me the best paint to use on a clinker hull boat, i am from Australia paint shops say water based, other say only use oil based paints house paints will work , also do i put a sealer first then primer then top coat any help appreciated.
To find the waterline; measure up from the bottom of the keel at the fore and aft parts of the keel to the old waterline before stripping off the paint, use these measurements to place a new line for the new paint between these 2 points. Continue the line fore and aft to the bow and transom, and there you have your new waterline. Never measure down from the rail because the topsides will generally be curved, which would translate to a curved waterline.
What kind of putty is being used to fill the nicks and dings? This is done after applying a couple of coats of primer/paint? I am a couple coats into painting my topsides and some of the seams, bung holes, and dings are really showing through but I'm not sure how to resolve at this stage.
Could you brush out Interlux Perfection as easily? I use the drip method for thinning paint for spraying - I never used it (or even thought of it) for brushing; great!
You will find that a sander, not a grinder, like a Makita, horizontal or vertical will be more manageable, and with a hard foam pad, peel and stick Norton 8 " sand paper. Also his painting is old school, traditional. Rolling and Foam brush "tipping" give superior results. .
Setting up for spraying takes a lot of time spraying outside in these conditions is never guaranteed. Generations at this boatyard have been brushing this way and it works.
@@Coastwiser I loved this video. I'm preparing to paint our boat with Interlux Brightside and was planning to roll and tip but am now thinking about brushing only. This is a great tip for people who don't have or want to use sprayers.

It's a working boat yard not a Hollywood movie set moron. People are working ospreys are flying overhead and I'm off in the distance trying to call my dog back.
@@Coastwiser You called me a MORON? HOW Rude of YOU!!! I gave you a compliment by telling you how I just wanted to hear you, because this video was so good. I didn't KNOW it was a working boat yard... I have never even SEEN a Working Boat yard before. You didn't have to hurt my feelings by calling me names. If you can treat a stranger (me) this mean, I can only imagine how you treat your own family.... .... Be NICE.
Hate to be critical, but I see a lot of faults. First, with availability of random orbital sanders, air powered versions used in any autobody shop for a perfectly fair surface, I would never recommend a disc sander. The risk of gouging for a newbie too great. 2nd, that disc sander has a center nut, perfect to leave a spiral trail of damage. 3rd, using a nylon bristle brush for oil-based polyurethane? Never! China bristle with oil only. It holds paint, applies perfectly and keeps a wide wet edge.
henrynevins I've been painting 30+ years, professionally...the brush he used is obviously fine...I used to be a China bristle only...bullshit, synthetics work better and don't shed!!! stop being a nitpicking douchbag ...get a life!!!
Excellent work! Very informative video. Thank you for sharing.
You did a fantastic job on that boat I am quite impressed
Amazing brush work, wow !
I like the Maine accent and the fashion he works. Kindly from Calabria, South Italy
Easily the most informative and helpful presentation of a boat work video. Great stuff. Make sure you subscribe.

dont you hate it when youtubers refuse to answer! I was wondering the same thing.
Interlux brightside is probably the best paint for this yard it's the exclusive paint.

+mrmrlee I set my boat level in every way for the duration of its restoration. The waterline was easy to set this way with a 3d laser level.

Try TotalBoat Total Fair fairing compound.

You are misguided incorrect and inflated with your own opinion. This yard has been doing it effectively consistently for generations.
@@Coastwiser Your are an antique buddy, are are closed minded to more modern effective procedures.
i must say your are very good with a brush,,, but why not spray it, more consistent,, faster ?

You need to use safety glasses my friend
Why so many sanding disks on that sander, He did not talk about that at all.
John Mahoney adds stiffness to the disc so he can put it flat on the job ,a random orbital will do the same job and lighter too
What is that annoying noise in the background...
I want to HEAR every word you're saying.

Its not the tools its the hands holding the tools that matters.
