- I'm aware that there are public services in India but they don't work well enough to be considered functioning most of the time.
Sorry this video wasn't great and the audio was bad, I’ve been sick and this has been my fever dream creation. I was delirious for not only the script writing, but for the voice recording and also the editing as well. No hidden goodies here. Just pain. I promise the next one will be better.

Being a Sikh, I had to meet the stereotype, my father was a truck driver for 5 years of his life. And this was almost 20 years ago shocking how little has changed. The things Yukon states in this video, however negative, are completely true. My father left trucking early in his life since he thankfully got a better job but the horrifying stories he tells me about the road and trucking in India really made me respect him and other truckers in India. We need some way to end corruption not just in India but throughout the world.
Exactly, what fascinates me even more that my uncle loves trucking, he owns multiple trucks but still does deliveries himself in his own modified truck.
The only way for all the madness you guys have in India to stop is too start good manners practice and well behavior individually. Because if your want your authorities to do something you will die waiting for them to do something. Better start at home teaching your children between what's good and what's not, the mere fact of driving responsible with courtesy of roads for example, just doing simple things. The only way for things to change is to stop doing the same thing you've been doing for years

also a Sikh, 14, I heard from my dad that trucking in India is way worse which kinda made sense based on the truck I went in at a dhaba and driving cars and bikes there, but I really didn't realize it was this bad, especially because of how enjoyable, fun, and social trucking is in Canada, and that explains why my dad came here for his love of driving rather than continuing with computer teaching.

You forgot to mention the fact that so many Indian truck drivers, especially in the north, struggle while delivering supplies through the Himalayas. It's a rugged yet major part of India, and truckers risk their lives on certain roads. Highways are being made, but these mountains are unforgiving.

@@hop-skip-ouch8798 nope all indian truck manufacturing don't have thier own engines except mahindra, secondly the non sense rules by rto, for eg, a transport operator cannot have a 4x4 truck even in mountain terrain. The ultimate shitty rules. The indian companies have unnecessarily inflated the price by manufacturing too many trucks as inventory as per load and weight class category. I personally feel that above 30 tonne of gvw the truck should only be of tractor trailer configuration
India does actually have emergency public services, such as ambulances and police, however they are extremely understaffed and overworked which makes response times long and overall difficult to keep consistent
And people do not give a shit. Here people are so sad like oh no the train blocked the ambulance but in India the ambulance always gets blocked even when we did yell at a little rickshaw to move and the vans themselves are also pretty slow

The semi truck you pictured with a "shipping container" is actually a car carrier, but they're enclosed to protect the vehicles from thefts and stone pecking damage. They only look as if they're containers because the corrugated panels used are similar to an ISO box.

Yes there are, but they’re always cuboid shapes and the truck in this photo is not. The fact that the height of the side is not constant shows that this is a car carrier. I used to see them all the time at the Ford plant in Chennai. Hyundai, Ford and Renault/Nissan all use these vehicles to transport vehicles away from their plants in Chennai. I assume others do too, but I haven’t visited the plants in Pune or Hyderabad

Corruption is limited to some small town areas otherwise cities and highways are covered up with video surveillance, only he knew how he calculated billion dollar figure in highway bribery.
You not need to apologise, the points you listed out are absolutely correct. The trucking industry here is miserable for the majority of drivers. They deserve appreciation, respect and better pay for their profession like everybody of us do.

They may build big highways and create new laws, but to actually improve the life of truckers would require going against corruption , and politicians don’t want that as they benefit the most from it.

The toughest in the world. 14 hour 6 day work weeks is the norm in Canada but dear Lord, I can't imagine the hell these drivers have to go through.
That's absurd in Europe u can only legally drive a truck for like 8 hours and there's even meters that will go of if u drive longer and compaines track how much there employees are driving just so they don't go over the limit.
Is that really true though? 11 hour drive time and maximum 14 hour day in the states. Ten hour downtime. Maximum 70 work week

@@SirCatWaffel At most we can drive 13 hours. That's below the 60th... Above the 60th we can drive 15 hours and work 18 hours in a day. No idea what downtime is like but the North is scary.
@@maxinorge We also have E-logs (much to everyone's dismay) which track the distance we drive, loading/unloading, where we're driving. It also alerts the government if you drive over hours without an exception button being pressed. (Exceptions eat into the rest of your HOS for the week)
As an Indian who likes to drive wherever I go, I can confirm most, if not all, that was said in this video. And I'd like to add something too: these guys, even if they have no formal training for driving these trucks, are the most disciplined drivers I've ever seen on the road. They usually stay in the fast lane, with uniform speed, use turn signals properly, and some of them communicate with trucks in front of them via this weird system of bright lights (usually red/green) installed alongside the headlights when they want them to change the lane, or give way. Ten meters behind a truck is when I feel the safest going 90km/h on a busy highway, especially when there's lane jumpers doing their thing in the other two/three lanes. It's also the fear of smashing into a behemoth going 100 on a road in the middle of nowhere that keeps reckless drivers from pulling stuff that they wouldn't hesitate to pull on a fellow car.

@@sl4y8r76 ay thats just my experience. Overloading har state me nahi hoti hai. Maine overloading sirf UP aur Jharkhand me dekhi hai. I've driven in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, and they're pretty ok on loading. As for bribes, that's obvious and I'm not denying that they take bribes, and I know that's bad. In my state, the most notorious drivers on the road are eeco taxis carrying 20+ people going 100 bobbing and weaving all over the highway.

But comparatively bus drivers are very notorious and drive rashly, especially the state transport buses, their movements are very unpredictable, and the cars on the highway generally go fast, overtaking everything else on the road
Trucks easily give us way to overtake, buses just don’t care
As an Indian I have immense respect for these drivers. You don't need to apologise for this video being negative but we as Indians need to improve for the betterment of these important part of our society who sacrifice so much without being part of it.
I sometimes see drivers sleep under their trucks as well to get out of the sun. It's sad how they are treated by companies they work with.

I don't think truckers are looked up to in most countries in the world (even though they are literally running the economy), that's just how society in general works.

@@pranay306 in most other countries truckers are at least widely acknowledged as essential workers. North America and Europe have strong trucking unions and they have a say in their own working conditions. Compared that to here and we do absolutely nothing of the sort.
One of the worst social stigma against Indian truckers is still alive today. They were blamed the most for the aids pandemic simply because "they travel everywhere". Even my school's science teacher blamed truckers for aids in India without giving and source or studies.

For eg our prime minister is from a backward class, previous president from schedule cast and current president from a schedule tribe. But trucking is changing fast in india. These days there are many drivers who are educated and willingly join trucking either because they like it or by their education is of no value in job market. Also, appearance of trucks changing really fast too. Increasingly company built cabins are common instead of cowl chassis customized cabin with the sales growth of BharatBenz, Tata Signa models , Eicher pro and Ashok leyland Avtr cabins
Once they finish all the states in American Truck Simulator the US (or a few states before) they should either work on Indian Truck Simulator or Australian truck Simulator.

As an Indian Fleet Owner, this is absolutely true, Except the fact about Truck's lifetime being 20 years, It is 10 years here in Delhi and it's hard to keep the business running when the Depreciation cost of the vehicle is equal to the earning also forget about the EMI's.

You know what's the worst part? That 20k salary you mentioned is actually what would be considered very high for a blue collar job in India. Most blue collar workers make a lot less. The plight of truckers is truly awful, yet if you meet them in person, they are some of the nicest people. I have spoken to a bunch of them and they always have interesting tales to tell.
The Indian government is trying to improve the share of the rails in freighting. So it is possible that going forward, the trucking industry might take a small hit.
Also, other people have called this out, but India does very much have emergency services. It's just that they can't respond as quickly because of manpower and funding shortages. The situation is better in major cities though.
The trucking industry is already getting more organised, but will that be good for them? I don’t know. I think more inclusion into pension & insurance schemes is what I think should be focused on. Government aided pit stop facilities, or shelter homes can be thought of. Wider roads, separate lanes. Now internet is connecting people so, may be there is hope for their better future.

Honestly, no joke here I love the look of Indian trucks. Very interesting video, Yukon, keep it up! You should be more popular. Quite unfortunate that these truck drivers don't get enough respect and sometimes live in the trucks that are poorly maintained. I wish things get better.

Honestly the trucks you see here are pretty good. And even the older TAMs and FAPs that you still see are usually owned by very fanatical enthusiasts and kept in immaculate condition.
In the balkans trucking is like in germany or any other developed european country, our boys drive mercedes, man, volvo whatever, road infrastructure is great (croatian highways) etc. Old trucks are used primarily by people that distribute wood or other resources to small communities

U like them but for us Indians they are death coffins on roads, majority of trucks cabins are made of wood and loading body in made by failed graduate roadside welders. In these trucks only headlights and horn works, no turn singnal, no break lights, no reflectors. Trucks drivers are loored by police and rto officials in every state border.
Yes this video was overly negative. But it was required. I had absolutely no idea the hardships they face. Moreover, even though not within regulations, Indian truckers are some of the best disciplined. They'll give you a headsup if there is something ahead, they'll wave their hand to let us go ahead, etc.
This is such a well-made video. Unlike other channels covering topics about India, you didn't looked down upon us. You tackled the situation with compassion and respect even when talking about the negative aspects of the industry. Great video!!!
No it is not negative, i have done my doctoral research on indian truck market. your views largely corroborates my primary data on truck drivers. But that was in 2012-13, i guess some moderate improvements have happened in between but their is a long way to go for indian truck industry to achieve its potential.

You should talk about Indonesian Trucking, its like driving in India and Japan at the same time, you can experience driving like in ETS2 to Mudrunner by just going to the next city/island due to uneven infrastructure

As an Indian i can confirm its very true . These truckers are playing an important role in our daily lives . They keep this vast country running . However i sometimes don't like them because they drive very dangerously , however its normal for almost all of them

I remember when Discovery Channel's _Ice Road Truckers_ did a season in India.
One driver, a very experienced but conservative man, upon seeing the free-for-all that Indian driving and roads were, quit and flew back home after only one day!

Incredibly accurate and comprehensive video. Concise, informative and surprisingly, with a real human, emotional aspect to it, not just another nerdy info-dump. I thought some things would inevitably get left out but you covered pretty much every aspect of Indian trucking I could think of, from road safety to substance abuse, dhabas, cooking in the cabin, corruption, the physical stress of the job. Just curious as to how you gathered all the info - online, talking to Indians, or did you travel in India?
A combination of help from Indian commenters, a great documentary made by VPRO (linked in the description), and from watching some Indian truck driving RUclipsrs. I also used various news sources (again, all linked in description) which were all incredibly helpful. Thankfully, there is a good amount of information online about the Indian trucking industry, both the positives and negatives.

I live in Malaysia and I noticed a trend among truck drivers in my state. They installed these colorful RGB LED strips around their cabs and in few instance all around their truck. I first saw a couple of them just before the global lockdown started but now there seems to be more of them on the road.
Not really sure how the fad started. I assumed they were inspired by the Thailand truckers but ours are just bright LEDs that don't look like much during the day. At night, however, they're quite a sight to see.
Speaking of LEDs there was a recent trend of regular cars putting pulsating blue LEDs in their main lights. A stupid, confusing trend since only the police and road authority are allowed to use pulsating blue lights(red is for the health and fire services while yellow is for construction vehicle and hearses). Really, who thinks mimicking the police is a great idea?

@@richarda996 Just ordinary people. They tend to follow weird new trends all the time. Usually it will take a while for the authorities to respond but time they're faster because of social media.
In Turkey we also use horns with tunes. My favorite one is love theme from Godfather. Most drivers also decorate their trucks and although government banned it, drivers of smaller trucks write funny or romantic stuff behind the truck. Also if some random kid wants it, they will definitely press the horn. I used to yell them to honk when I was a kid.

Somewhat related is a huge percentage of American/Canadian truck drivers are immigrants from India usually Sikhs. About 40% of truckers in California are Sikhs. Alot of truck stops on the West coast will have Indian restaurants within walking distance because of this fact.

Also travelling on highways into major cities at night is a nightmare, as most of them will have a huge line of trucks to get "inspected" by police, occupying all lanes.

okay as an indian, i agree and disagree with some of your points.
1. Corruption runs rampant in India and smalltime officials are corrupt because the higher ups take a large portion of the budget their department gets thus leading to lower wages for employees. The current government is most certainly corrupt and will continue to be that way for the visible future.
2. Truck drivers are blamed for accidents because it is often, their fault (though not entirely). As you mentioned, drivers drive intoxicated with various substances and often get little sleep, leading to more accidents. 5. Our roads aren't haphazard as shown in the video, most cities that are newer have "good" lanes and people mostly follow rules. In cities like Mumbai, where I live, the roads are disorganized because of Autorickshaws. They create a huge mess and since they're pretty small people just spread into other lanes. However, in the main part of the city (probably the place you'll visit as a tourist) is organized and traffic laws are pretty strictly enforced (though you can get away with a bribe).

WOW ! This Video was way too one sided and Negative. Yes , Indian Trucking isn't great but I have watched all your Trucking videos of other countries but you haven't talked negatively about any of them . Problems exist with every trucker but you have completely whitewashed their problems & have somehow exaggerated the Indian Trucking scene especially the road infrastructure which has drastically improved.

Hey, mate good video ngl. But the twist is that Northern Indian trucks are very very different. South, where I grew, has more "environment friendly" trucks, not electric but, less horns and high restrictions for customizations. Southern police and ambulance/medical service are not the best but is relatable to the Western world. Not saying that North has the worst. New TATA and Ashok Leyland trucks are out in the roads. Indians are so used to pressing there horns for no reasons, it is sure that only the new educated young generations can break the chains. It is true that Indian trucks "are the worst" but, they are made and customized to drive in rough roads, mostly the low priority roads(to avoid toll fees). Well to outsiders "Welcome to India!"

In the 50’s, 60’s,and 70’s in the southern states of North America it was normal. Been there done that.
They should be paid at least 40,000 to 50,000 rupees a month. I'm sure the truck owners do make such money to pay them good enough. Even 30-35000 is ok, but 20,000 is unacceptable.

A few things which are a little inaccurate in the video - 1. the government doesn't change regulation so that they can keep getting bribes, the top officials that make the regulations don't depend on petty bribes from truckers, they take directly from corporate looters, 2. the replacement of 20 years old vehicles is essential because of emission norms, 3. India has public service like ambulance but havilly understaffed and 4. India may top the world in raw accident numbers but in per capita numbers it is not that high. But except for these few inaccuracies, a good video on highlighting the hardships of indian truckers
Perhaps you should do a video on how indian migration has ruined the transport industry in Australia. As someone who's in the industry and has seen it first hand I'd be more than happy to share some of the hundreds of near fatal incidents I have seen at the hands of indian immigrant drivers that have little to no experience whatsoever

The bribes have come under control to some extent because of FastTag. So toll and permit payments are automatic. Emergency serveices are better in cities. The old truck ban thing is not just a cash grab. If you have seen how polluting those trucks were, you will understand. There were no environment regulations back then. Rest of the video is spot on. The working condition and lives of truck drivers is still as bad.

There's annoying thing some truckers do in India is that they come to the right lane and drive about 40 and 60km/hr in National highways. Some times three trucks occupy all three lanes and slow down all traffic

While I work for Volvo, designing the safest trucks there are. It's disheartening to see that these features are not reaching our truckers. But, this is also something that's changing rapidly along with the economy. Once indian consumers are ready to bear the extra cost of logistics, this situation should improve. This can only come after a certain level of economic growth. Also, as it gets more and more difficult to attract new drivers, trucking companies will have to offer better and safer conditions.
One interesting thing I recently found out was that in Japan, they let their best drivers drive imported European trucks as a type of reward to retain them. I see it being applied here in the near future.

You should also mention how awful and jank Indian trucks are to drive. I drove a pretty "modern" one just after learning to drive cars and it had no power steering. Only 5 gears and the clutch felt like pressing against a charging bull. The power and torque is always extremely weak because truck owners prefer economy rather than speed. Thanks to all this Indian truckers are highly susceptible to joints and muscle related injuries over the course of their life.
