Dr. Cory Torgerson talks about facial plastic surgery for the ear which is known as otoplasty.
Otoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure that helps to reshape and improve the appearance of the outer ears. The procedure is rewarding and restores confidence and dignity to those hiding behind their hair.
Good candidates for this procedure include both children and adults where the folds along the outer ear have failed to properly develop causing the ears to stick out from the sides of the head. In other patients, abnormally shaped cartilage can cause the ears to stick out excessively. The surgery can also be used to repair stretched, torn or unbalanced ear lobes.
Otoplasty can usually be done in one to two hours depending on the complexity and can be done under local anesthesia.
During the surgery, a small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the cartilage. The ear’s cartilage is then sculpted and contoured before being sutured back towards the head. Sometimes non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape.
Recovery time is usually about one week and any removable sutures come out at that time. Most patients will need to wear a headband dressing for the first week and be careful when they’re sleeping so that they don’t put excess pressure on their ears.
The ears can be tender for 3 to 5 days following the procedure, but most patients are back to their normal routine shortly thereafter.
