  • Fix the Y axis once and for all (I hope). Take the opportunity to install oiler hoses and limit switches. There is quite a bit of work needed for this.

    Great video as usual. Looking forward to seeing the first parts made with your improvements !!!

      Thanks JC10. Yeah milling is coming, also checking following error. Some problems to solve along the way though. It will not be long :)

    Gigantic work indeed!

    Hi! Guess this is cheaper, but honestly, today you can actually buy AC servos around 2500 SEK all the way home from china. I've used it on my bigger machines with very good results. Something to consider next time perhaps ? :)

    23.00 I'm surprised you decided to grind away metal for the table to get clearance for a 3d printed plastic part. Most wouldve grinded away the plastic part to make clearance or even re-printed the part to be the right size so it didnt interfere with the table. Why didnt you want to grind away the plastic? Yes I know it doesnt grind well since it melts but that could be shaved off with an exacto knife.

    Cutting steel stepper shaft with abrasive wheel above newly cleaned ways?

    Looks like PLA bearing keeper for the Ball nut. May one use simply a 3D printed tube of the required O.D. or must it be threaded? I must upgrade some RM2010 ball nuts.

    I was wondering if you used a few shims to off set those bearing from the outer part to the inner ring because if those bearing are just put against each other and tighten up it won't apply and preload on the bearing balls to eliminate the backlash. If you shim the out races apart and tighten up the center nut it will take up space in the bearings on those bearings if they are Angular Contact bearings

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  5 лет назад

      Yes, there are three shims between the outer rings. There is a good preload.

    What is the microstepping on those? The whining can many times be mitigated by finding the proper microstepping to resonate with your application. I usually go with 16ths

      There is 4000 steps/rev (= 800 steps/mm). That is 20x I guess. I think I mostly reacted to that the Y axis sounded much much better than before.

    why did you grind the saddle down now your gonna get a bunch of chips in there. you should have just removed some material off the top of the y bearing block.

      The problem is the interference with the Y motor. I lowered the ball screw to avoid all this, but apparently not enough.

    what about epoxy shrinkage? Does the body sound hollow or filled?

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  4 года назад

      There was some shrinkage. The free surface came down a millimeter or two. It is defintely sounding filled.

    Nice video! Where did you buy the ballscrew kit?

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  5 лет назад

      From one of the sellers on aliexpress, can't remember which one. The ball screw nuts are the DFU type (double nut), but frankly I don't see the difference to single nut.

      @@metalmusings but is it really an anti backlash ballscrew? Because I heard cheap chinese made ballscrews got some backlash.

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  5 лет назад

      @@gizish Have not noticed any backlash from the screws, backlash has been in the bearing so far.

    what cnc board are you using?

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  5 лет назад

      It's the Mesa 7i76E and a 7i85S for the encoders.
