There is another way to do this journey. South Western Railway to Staines South Western Railway to Reading GWR to Slough GWR to Windsor & Eton Central Also going to Paddington with the Bakerloo Line is faster than the Northern Line and Elizabeth Line.
Isn't there a shuttle that does precisely and only that? Although it would be difficult to do in the format as every train to Colchester Town goes through Colchester Station doesn't it?
@@quintuscrinis Indeed. What happens, for those who don't know the area, is that, Sundays excepted, Colchester Town (St Botolph's to locals (it was called St Botolph's until 1991) has a single platform, but an hourly arrival and departure from London Liverpool Street, and an hourly (in each direction) call on the Colchester-Walton-on-the-Naze service. The station is situated at the bottom end of a triangular junction between Colchester and Hythe - i.e. it's a terminus station, and all trains must reverse. Coupled with it having only one platform, this creates a capacity problem. For the London service to fit in its path along the main line (it calls at every GA-served mainline station except Hatfield Peverel and Ingatestone), it needs to have a decent layover - but there also needs to be room for the Colchester-Walton service to reverse. Solution: to run the London unit to Colchester and back to free up the space. It's not entirely pointless though, as Colchester station (North station, to use its local name) is a long walk from the city centre, and uphill. The train is therefore more convenient. This, incidentally, is also why Sudbury services won't be extended until a new platform is built.
Hi there Nick! Enjoying these videos. Out of interest, is Enfield Town to Enfield Chase pointless journey on your to-do list? It should take about 10 minutes, if that, to walk between the two.
I think there's been a misunderstanding here, because getting a 450 all the way to Weymouth from Waterloo is near impossible. The Weymouth service will always split at Bournemouth, with the rear unit either terminating or continuing on a slower pattern to Poole. If a 444/450 hybrid ends up doing this, the 450 is always the rear unit. In fact the only time I recall ever working and seeing a double 450 on that route is when the entire train terminated at Bournemouth due to engineering works between BMH and Wareham. Regardless, this isn't too much of an issue, considering they do the Winchester - Bournemouth route and do long distance services anyways. The pleasure of being short of rolling stock right....
Can totally relate to your thoughts regarding the Elizabeth Line. I can't imagine it not being there now, feels like it's been with me forever, yet still so shiny & new. Great video!
Have you ever considered going from West Hampstead (Underground) to West Hampstead (Overground) to West Hampstead Thameslink (National Rail) by any chance, especially since all three are right next to one another on the same street Would make a pretty interesting pointless journey in my opinion
Lets be bonest, West Hampstead LU to West Hampstead Thameslink LO, you can just go to Kilburn or Finchley Road, walk to Brondesbury/Finchley Road Frognal and get LO to Kentish Town West (crossing West Hampstead Thameslink LO) and walk to Kentish Town to get a Thameslink service back to West Hampstead Thameslink NR
Hi Nick! You won’t remember me, but I was on a Q&A livestream you did in August 11th. I asked ‘what is the best thing to do in Edinburgh train-wise?’ You responded ‘go to North Berwick.’ I’d just like you to know that we did in fact do that, and it was one of the best days of our holiday! Thank you!! :D Also TIME FOR ANOTHER POINTLESS JOURNEY 🎉
Hello my friend! Great video you've made here. I live in Windsor and this is indeed a pointless journey at the stations are just a short walk away from each other lol. You're also very lucky to get a seat on the Lizzy Line! I do love the Elizabeth Line but every time I go on it I can never find a seat!! Keep up the great work mate!
Re your comment at 4:40 I think it just doesn't take long to get used to a new line if it's the new fastest option for so many journeys. My sister moved to the docklands and suddenly I'm catching it every time I visit because Farringdon is a much better interchange than London Bridge AND it's fast AND it reduces time spent on the DLR and I could get used to that!
Got to admit when I saw the title I was like 'is he going to go all the way into London or go do a reversal at Staines and go via Reading'...and now I'm curious on the difference in journey time between the two journeys
Catford to Catford Bridge is an interesting pointless journey that I’d love to see you do. 30ish seconds to walk between the two but it’s an interesting route if you decide to use trains
@@NickBadley Definitely should of started the video like that 🤣 feel like the cross over with tom scotts audience is definitely there enough for it to land haha
Windsor and Eton Riverside and Windsor and Eton Central stations are quite near to each other and both serve the town of Windsor and village of Eton via crossing over the River Thames. And South Western Railway should introduce the Class 701 Arterios that are to be used on the suburban services in Southwest London and to operate on the Windsor & Eton Riverside line and Reading line.
Great video 👏 I’m with you, no trip to London is complete without a ride on the Elizabeth Line whether it saves time or it doesn’t. Also, I did that Paddington to Windsor leg of your journey for the first time back in August. The ‘shuttle’ is woefully lacking capacity as I found with all the tourists and yes I was being a tourist too! 😂
I’m going to London next month to film a pointless journey-esque video. Travel on all tube lines, all TfL (Overground, Elizabeth Line, DLR, Trams, etc) and all TOC that serve London (within Oyster Zone so with the exception of some intercity services EMR LNER, HT, etc). I think the idea of going from Penzance to Thurso, most southern to northern stations in the UK. This would happen by leaving at a set time near the beginning of the day and travel up to Thurso but as soon as you get to a station you have to leave within 5 minutes, it may take multiple days but it would be interesting how many places the rail network could take you if you have such a tight time to depart from a station. I feel as if this would be a very good RUclips video and wouldn't be able to think about any other RUclipsr who could create this video concept really well.
I think Geoff Marshall did a Lands End to John O Groats. challenge by bus/train in under 24 hours. Cannot find the video to see how long he too. I am sure he went a few minutes over the 24 hours so didn't do it in a day.
@quintuscrinis8032 not quite that extreme: St Pancras to Stratford International, DLR to Stratford, Stratford to Tottenham Hale, Victoria Line to Finsbury Park and the last leg to Kings Cross Yes it's the opposite way round to that I suggested, but it just occurred to me

Nick how did you find it staying in Slough?? Was the hotel any good? Going from the Staines line to the GWR line I prefer to change at Richmond for District line connecting up to Ealing Broadway (from there it’s Eliz to Slough obvs).
Brilliant pointless journey Nick, honestly it has been quite warm for September (although it's cooled down now as of writing this comment lol). The Class 444's are trains I would like to ride sometime, I've not rode them yet.
The 444s are such nice trains, nice ride quality, nice seats, 2+2 seating, aircon and they even have decent legroom coming from someone who’s 6’3”. Definitely a comfy regional train
Personally I would have gone Windsor to Staines. Staines to Reading. Reading to Slough. Slough to Windsor. Avoids the cross London transfer so would be cheaper and would take about the same amount of time. Maybe slightly faster. Nice vid though :)
Avoiding London isn't always cheaper for some reason. I have looked up the Bournemouth to Manchester journey amd for some reason the via London (3 changes) route is usually about 30% the price of the direct (one XC) train. :(
@quintuscrinis8032 I used to work for SWR as a Revenue Inspector and as I said personally I would go via Reading as I hated travelling across London. The Reading route is more scenic. Can't comment on the price as I used to get free rail travel ;). I will.add that we were always told that for journeys with multiple permitted routes the "not london" option was usually cheaper. However in the case of your XC route London would be the cheaper option as the direct route via Reading and Birmingham is far faster and more convenient as there are no changes.
As i enjoy train travel, I'm happy to make my journey longer by getting off at a station on some cases if allowed. Like even if there is a direct train, I still get off so that I can be on two different trains/TOCs. I never do so on an advance ticket however.
I love the Pointless Journey series. Waterloo is indeed a great station. Love the kissing statue. Long platforms though. I would like to suggest birmingham snow hill/Moor Street to Birmingham New Street.
I'm the 3rd person to comment this on this video, but I'd love to see my two former local stations, Farnborough (Main) to Farnborough North which could be done a few different ways, like Via Basingstoke and Reading or Woking and Guildford, you could even do it Via Weybridge, Virginia Water and Reading if you really wanted too
Wigan Wallgate to Wigan Northwestern, they're a 30 second walk from each other but you have to go to Manchester or Liverpool to catch a train between them
Fab. When are you doing St Albans Abbey to City? Excuse for 150s on the Bletchley to Bedford line very soon or a trip on the Overground. Plus the new Brent Cross West station, depending on your route. If you then add the Alban Way cycle path you have three old stations to look at.
Love the video Nick, only thing missing was a lack of explanation as to how close the two stations actually are (I’m not familiar with Windsor and Eton so I could’ve done with a quick intro as to why it’s pointless!) Keep up the good work.
Haven't read all the comments but you could have gone Richmond-Turnham Green - Ealing Broadway to avoid Central London. I had to commute from Chiswick to Slough for 18 months, usually Chiswick Park - Ealing Broadway but occasionally Gunnersbury - Willesden - Paddington.
I’ve walked the journey between the 2 farnborough stations and I’d much rather any ‘pointless journey’, though it would be fairly easy to go between the 2. One way could be Farnborough to Woking, then Woking to guildford and from there to Farnborough north - or the other way, Farnborough to Basingstoke, Basingstoke to reading and then down to Farnborough north, but I’m sure you could make a much more convoluted route!
Farnborough main to Brookwood. Brookwood to Ash Vale. Walk to North Camp. Then train to Farnborough North. OR Main to Brookwood. Brookwood to Aldershot. Aldershot to Ascot. Then to Wokingham finally Wokingham to Farnborough North. I Think Ash Vale to North Camp is a longer walk than Farnborough Main to North
Waterloo to Waterloo East. Waterloo to Clapham Junction. To East Croydon. To London Bridge. To Waterloo East. Or go to Burger King then walk up the stairs....
Love your videos! How about Waterloo to Waterloo East? I would do Waterloo to Clapham Junction (SWR), Clapham Junction to East Croydon (Southern), East Croydon to Elmers End (Tram), Elmers End to Waterloo East (Southeastern)

Next time your in London, there is Kenton on the Bakerloo and London Overground and a 5 minute walk away there is Northwick Park on the Metropolitan line. That would be a cool pointless journey.
Not sure if you're still in the area, but here's another pointless journey for London: West Hampstead (Underground) - West Hampstead (Overground) - West Hampstead Thameslink
Nothing like complicating your journey just to take the purple train, tbh I'd do the same even though you can just get the bakerloo line direct betwen Waterloo and Paddington
You could do a quicker one which is W&ER to London Waterloo and then take the bakerloo line to Paddington then Paddington to slough then slough to W&EC.
So isn’t Windsor riverside to Staines, Staines to Reading, Reading to slough, slough to Windsor central - the train journey ? I mean nothern line isn’t a train right 😅? (Sorry)
It's the pointlessly large trains on the Thames Valley branches that gets me. There should be a small fleet of 153s for Greenford, Windsor, etc. Those bigger units should be sent west to where there are larger numbers of passengers on regional routes.
There is another way to do this journey.
South Western Railway to Staines
South Western Railway to Reading
GWR to Slough
GWR to Windsor & Eton Central
Also going to Paddington with the Bakerloo Line is faster than the Northern Line and Elizabeth Line.
That's the same route I was thinking
Me too
or
SWR to Richmond
District line to Turnham Green
District Line to Ealing Broadway
GWR to Slough
GWR to Windsor & Eton central
I do love the Pointless Journeys Series!

I think a great pointless journey would be from St Albans City to St Albans Abbey station :)
The 450s are fine for ‘suburban’ routes but SWR have been sadistic enough to use them on the route from Weymouth to Waterloo.
When was that? I've seen them on the Basingstoke to Bournemouth and Winchester to Poole "shuttles" but not the full length services before.
I haven’t seen them on London-Weymouth but they regularly do London-Portsmouth

If you are ever in cbridge you could do a point to point from st Ives midlands to st Ives cornwall
Soon what do you think of the electrostars. I really like them
Do a pointless journey Enfield town to Enfield chase or Enfield town to southbury
Idk why but the music you used for the beginning/Southwestern part of the video was making me live! Sounds a lot like Catwalk by RuPaul. 😅🎉😂
Good video nick
Nick I’m the same with CrossPurpliz line but other is Bakerloo..
Tried to do the Northern to Battersea Power Station Station for the last 4 visits but my other half doesn’t let me
Next time your in London, there is Kenton on the Bakerloo and London Overground and a 5 minute walk away there is Northwick Park on the Metropolitan line. That would be a cool pointless journey.
Here's a suggestion: Exeter St Davids - Exeter St Thomas
Here we go again :)
Great video
Not sure if you're still in the area, but here's another pointless journey for London: West Hampstead (Underground) - West Hampstead (Overground) - West Hampstead Thameslink
Nothing like complicating your journey just to take the purple train, tbh I'd do the same even though you can just get the bakerloo line direct betwen Waterloo and Paddington
I'm assuming Headbolt Lane (Merseyrail) to Headbolt Lane (Northern) is coming soon?
You could do a quicker one which is W&ER to London Waterloo and then take the bakerloo line to Paddington then Paddington to slough then slough to W&EC.
Did you consider going from Waterloo, fast train to Basingstoke, or Guildford, then Reading, Slough for W&E Central.
There would be very little point in heading over to Waterloo to do that, when one can get a train to Reading from Staines
farnborough main to north could be cool if you’re ever down south?
you could do it so many ways, via reading or woking/guildford
So isn’t Windsor riverside to Staines, Staines to Reading, Reading to slough, slough to Windsor central - the train journey ? I mean nothern line isn’t a train right 😅? (Sorry)
Another Pointless Journey could be Huddersfield Bus station to Huddersfield Train Station without walking to the train station
What about Farnborough North to Farnborough main?
It's the pointlessly large trains on the Thames Valley branches that gets me. There should be a small fleet of 153s for Greenford, Windsor, etc. Those bigger units should be sent west to where there are larger numbers of passengers on regional routes.
Catford to Catford Bridge would be nice for a next video, even if Geoff Marshall already did it before.
