I plan on building a wooden summer villa (outdoor hutch) for my nieces’ guinea pig next spring. If it gets too hot and during the winter, he can move indoors. But it’ll give him the opportunity to graze in the grass and get as much exercise as he wants whenever he wants. [I told her they’re happier in pairs, but she didn’t want to.]
My sister’s guinea pig died last year and she didn’t want to get a new one because she felt like we were just replacing him so I have my piggy (his name) on his own ,he is 3 and I got him from a pet shop so my parents don’t think it’s worth getting a second piggy for him but I am making an effort to be with pig more. Hey! I’ve got some questions: 1) I just got 2 Guinea pigs yesterday. One of them is outgoing, and the other is shy. The shy one isn’t drinking/eating. Is this normal? What should I do? 2) they are not eating the veggies I put in the cage. How to I get them to eat it? Does it just need time? 3) how can I bond with them? They are very afraid of me. If anyone can answer, that would be amazing! (Awesome video BTW. Love you!)
Hi! To answer your questions: The shy one might not be eating/drinking while you are in the room, but it is likely they are still eating drinking. Try to sit in the room with them and just make sure that the shy one is eating, because guinea pigs need to be eating constantly for their stomachs to work properly. Try checking to see if its eyes are watery/crusty or if you think it is having trouble breathing, since sometimes illnesses like upper respiratory infections may affect this. If this is the case, make sure to take it to the vet immediately! In terms of veggies, sometimes it takes piggies some time to get used to the taste of certain foods if they haven't had it before. Do you know what (if any) veggies they ate before? If so, try feeding them those foods. If not, try a variety of veggies to see what they will eat. Lastly, it definitely takes time to bond with them. It can take anywhere from a week or so to even months! Sometimes, it can take years for a really shy pig to come out of its shell completely! But I promise you it is so rewarding once they do fully bond with you! Good luck!
Hi :) They have some on Guinea Pig Cages (called the pig-a-boo window), or you can ask for some plexiglass to be cut (at hardware store/timber merchants) to the same size as a grid, and if its thick enough it will work with the connectors.
hello, my best friend has a guinea pig and i’ve been trying to do as much research as possible i’m looking into building my own. do you know if there is any places to purchase the clear plastic for the cages. and what products can be used to clean the clear plastic cage? thank you in advance!
Hey, you mention pontyboard for making your own cages. I can't find pontyboard! Did you meant pontyboard or something else? I've found this: Gloss White Fully edged Chipboard Furniture board, (L)1.2m (W)400mm (T)18mm Would this be okay?
Is there any sort of cheaper alternative to Coroplast? I have seen a cage using simple poster board and shower curtain liners. Would that work or not? Love the video 💗
Thank you so much! Yes I have seen examples where people have used a waterproof material and then put fleece over then just the grids - a shower curtain might still let pee through though. Maybe you could get unwanted correx from an old sign shop, or old lino flooring might work too. Shop around for correx as well, it can be expensive online but usually much cheaper from DIY/hardware stores - look out for it being sold as corrugated roofing sheets for sheds :)
Great video! I have a question about hay. I use timothy hay. It's green and stiffer than your hay. I have noticed this with other guinea pig youtubers. Should I be purchasing a different hay?
Hi Danielle, no Timothy hay is one that is fine to feed constantly 😊 The meadow hay that I have is just easier for me to purchase, I do also feed them some Timothy alongside it which they love!
So I have a C&C cage that holds 5 Guinea pigs and I keep having this little thought in the back of my head that it's too small so how much should I have for 5 Guinea pigs? I have a 6 by 3 And for some reason it still doesn't feel like enough. I'm honestly trying my best to give them enough room
Hello, we are about to build a cage for my 7 guinea pigs and we are wondering if melamine is actually safe for them. I looked at the information sheet about its toxicity in terms of its smell. What is your opinion please?
Hey there - if I'm honest I have not researched this. It is used for furniture so I assume it meets some rigorous standards for being in people's homes. The coating is water resistant and wipe clean and I have never noticed any smell from the wood once built, and just a sort of general timber smell (no chemicals) when building the cage. The piggies show no interest in trying to chew it or anything either 😊
#1st amazing video love it! I need your help my Guinean Pigs partner last I’m trying to adopt but I keeps not working out! I’m getting tempted to buy what do you think? I’ve used both cages I love them both!
Hi! I'm not Sarah, but I'll give you my two cents :) I think that it is best to adopt, because most pet shop piggies aren't kept in good condition and it is estimated that around 65% of them come to the owner with some sort of illness. I'd say, adopt if you can, or see if there are any guinea pigs near you who need rehoming! If not, I think that it is okay to buy, but make sure the piggy you are bringing home looks healthy and consider keeping it in another room for around 2 weeks to make sure that it is not sick, since I'm sure you don't want your own guinea pig to get sick! Good luck!
Hi, I am also in the UK, can you please tell me where to buy the plastic storage box that you use for the hay/litter tray please? And what did you use to cut the plastic please? Thanks x
Hi! I think I got it from B&Q but I went recently and they were all different. I got a similar size one that's a bit thicker so not sure how I'll go about cutting it! I used a Stanley knife before, I think there's a video on how to make your own hay room 😊 people suggested heating up the plastic with a hairdryer might help!
Thanks so much! These are homemade liners - I have an older video on how I made them which you can find on my channel, I think "HOW TO: Make Your Own Waterproof Fleece Cage Liners". Cheap fleece throws (from Primark or similar), waterproof mattress protector and cotton mattress protector - sew layers together, turn inside out and stitch up the opening, voila! :D
I’ve decided to build my very own timber cage for my piggies. I’ve noted down all of the equipment that you’ve used. But I think it would really benefit me and other people who wants to build a timber, if you could maybe explain yourself on how you’ve made it and what you did exactly to build it. Thank you. P.s I enjoy watching your videos.
Hi! I really enjoy your videos! I have a question for you. I plan on getting two six week old guinea girls in a couple of months, and the only space I have to put them, is in my bedroom. Do you see any issues with this? I look forward to your answer. Thanks so much!
My three pigs stay in my room and it works well. The downsides are that you're going to have to sacrifice quite a bit of space for the cage, and there's going to be a Guinea pig aroma (the more often you clean the cage, the better! I find it to be a good motivator). Another potential downside is that Guinea pigs are quite vocal, and sometimes they'll decide to wheek or rumble or otherwise talk when you're trying to sleep. Personally, I've gotten used to it and actually enjoy the sounds, but it's something to be aware of!
Hi - thank you so much! Congrats on getting piggies too, I'm super excited for you!! A bedroom is fine, I had pigs in my bedroom for many years :) Agree with the previous comment totally too. The bedroom might be a bit of a quieter area in the house too, so I'd try set up regular floortime to get the pigs used to human sounds and activity.
@@kwarra-an I truly appreciate your suggestions, and your experience with living with them in your own bedroom! I will definitely keep all of this in mind🙂 I also like your comment about the guinea pig smell, but that it’s a great incentive in keeping it as clean as possible! @@SqueakDreams I truly appreciate your opinion on this, as well as the other commentators sharing her experience and suggestions. Do you have any other suggestions that might be of help? Thanks so much for you help and consideration of my question. 😊
@@Deepseaotter I use newspaper as a "base" with fleece on top. The newspaper base makes it easy to roll everything up when it's time to clean! I wash the fleece, and replace the newspaper. You can use towels in a pinch, but they're a little too absorbent in my experience. Fleece is reusable, soft, and doesn't have the tendency for mess that wood/paper shavings do (not ideal in your bedroom!).
So, I am getting a guinea pig, but it is staying in my room. I am going to have 28 in Width and 42 in length , and a lot of room to build on top, this is my first guinea pig and I am very excided, I am hoping for some advise, what is the best cage I could build for a good price ( I am not rich, I am average) I am planning on making my own stuff for the cage!
Congrats! But first please consider getting two - they really do do better in pairs. I have a video on best cages linked in the description which might help you! 😊
I have a question,so I when a giant walk in closet (it’s bigger than my parents moms walk in closet) which I don’t even use for clothes since I have a dresser and a good clothing rack.Im think about redoing my closet and removing all the shelves and making it into my guinea pigs home I was gonna remove the Door and just add kind of like a cage door. I will make a video on my yt acc if you want me to so you can see how big it is.would it be suitable for a guinea pig room?
Hi - that sounds like a great idea! Make sure its all chew proof and their are no hazards for them, then you just need to think about the flooring and how best to keep it clean. Under bed storage boxes with entrance hole work great for litter trays, but piggies will also just pee and poop in other places too!
I was wondering if i could use a shower curtian bc i dont really have enough money for the chloraplast but i havn't got the cubes yet it comes in the 13th and my fleece blankets are coming in tm. so do you know if a shower curtian is ok? i looked it up and they said it was ok but now im kinda worried
Hi, I think I have heard of people using shower curtains, but depending on where the cage is going it really needs to be fully waterproof, which I don't think shower curtains are. Perhaps something else waterproof (tarpaulin?) would work in the meantime 😊
Hi. I’m reasonably new to Guineas, I have 2,9 month old boys. I’ve notice a slightly different smell in their “toilet areas” & they were well blessed in their reproductive system...lol is there any difference/need/benefit from getting them neutered? Thanks in advanced
Haha I like your wording! For male guinea pigs there is no need or benefit (apart from no breeding if you introduce males and females) to neutering your piggies. It doesn't affect their smell/behaviour and I haven't heard that it affects their health. So your boys can be peaceful in the knowledge they can remain well-endowed!
Lesley O. Unfortunately they are not particularly hand friendly, they’ve never bitten but are very skittish when in reachable distance it would be a vet job or there breeder isn’t to far away...🙂
I have a fairly recent video on litter training - it's more about the setup than anything else! It's called How to Litter Train a Guinea Pig: Keep Your Cage Cleaner for Longer 😃
I really would like to change to fleece bedding for my 4 guinea pigs, right now I'm using pine wood bedding. I used to use fleece and put wood bedding where they eat. The bedding would track all over the fleece because we didn't get untreated wood to put separating the two. I'd love to switch back to fleece and litter train my guinea pigs but my dad doesn't want the fleece to go into our washing machine even if it's in a pillowcase/washbag. Do you know a way to sanitize the fleece without putting it in the washing machine so it's suitable to go back in there cage? Like possibly getting a tub and handwashing it, but I'm worried it wouldn't be fully sanitized as the washing machine makes it
Yes I think you could hand wash fleece in the bath, perhaps getting some waterproof pads to put in hotpots would help too. It might not get as clean as the machine but you leave it to soak for a while with detergent then wash and rinse it well. It might take a while to dry, but you could trial it and see how it goes. Then maybe your dad would let you put it in the machine eventually 😊
I find it easier than a C&C - one like mine is off the floor, more stable, if sealed with aquarium sealant there are no gaps for hay and dust to get stuck in, high sides mean hay doesn't spill out of the cage through the bars, the smooth surface is easy to spray and wipe down 😃
If you're selling any kind of male guinea pig on definitely take one for 30 bucks or lower because me and my daughter are looking for a male guinea pig for mine

Mine has 8 openings is that ok?
Don’t mind me asking what does c&c mean
It means Cubes and Coroplast, cubes are the wire metal grids and coroplast which also goes by several other names is the plastic base 😊
@@SqueakDreams thanks
Is there a video of how you built your cage in this video?
Not exactly, I do show the cage in detail at the end though so you can essentially see how it is put together 🙂
And it’ll also be nice, if you could tell us where you got all of your materials from and the size of the equipments. As I am struggling to find some.
I'm curious as to why the grids with 5 or 8 openings are dangerous? Does it affect the stability of the grid?
This is for younger piggies (although the 5 maybe all piggies), as they can get their head stuck through the grids.
I want t mske my spare bedroom into a g pig room not sure wgereto start or how to do it help 😢
I have a video idea:
How to CONVINCE parents to get bigger cages?
Its easy just say that they need a bigger cage its not good for them to have a small cage. Try that!
Can I ask you what bedding do you use etc? Thanks so much for your help!☺️
@@SqueakDreams OMG, YOU ACUALLY ANSWERED. YOU ARE AMAZING!. And will do.
What are the measurements on your cage?
how did you make your own cage
I have a video on this - How to Make Your Own IKEA Style Cage 😊😃
what is the height of the wood on the sides? by the wayy i love your cage and will be recreating it myself :)
Thank you! It is 28 cm high 😊
Squeak Dreams thank you,I am thinking about ideas on how to keep the floor clean 😊.
I don't own piggy's but I am doing my research before I decide if there right for me or not. Thanks for the tips! ●︿●
You're welcome, it's an excellent idea to do plenty of research, they might be smaller than other pets but they are still a big commitment 😊
Thanks for your replies, I’ve just noticed I’m using my husbands account, my name is Gail.....
Can I buy these supplies at Walmart
You may be able to get the cage grids from there but for the correx might be better trying a DIY store, or order materials online 😊
Are your guinea pigs like litter trained how are they so cleannn? Pls tell me your secret my girls are disgusting
Laundromat is an option.
How big is your cage?
My cage is 2 m by 70 cm, about equivalent to a 2 x 6 C&C cage. I should have mentioned that in the video! :)
Why is a timber cage easier to clean?
I find it easier than a C&C - one like mine is off the floor, more stable, if sealed with aquarium sealant there are no gaps for hay and dust to get stuck in, high sides mean hay doesn't spill out of the cage through the bars, the smooth surface is easy to spray and wipe down 😃
how to clean theirs pee?
I don’t even have a guinea pig why am I watching this?
If you're selling any kind of male guinea pig on definitely take one for 30 bucks or lower because me and my daughter are looking for a male guinea pig for mine
2x4 grids for 3 pigs?!?! thats waaaay to small :( poor piggies
Only time pass
