Excellent video! JRR Tolkien most definitely smoked Capstan Medium Navy Flake. As a Tolkien lover I wrote to his estate and received this nice replay from his grandson.
    Dear John,
You are perfectly correct, Professor Tolkien's tobacco of choice was
indeed Capstan Medium Navy Cut. You might also be interested to know
that it was also his son Christopher's favourite tobacco until he
    stopped smoking.
    Best regards
    Adam Tolkien

Apart from not smoking pipes younger people would probably not have the patience to sit through videos like these but I find your manner of speaking and your overall tone very soothing. Watching your videos is akin to sitting down with a pipe or two. Thanks for what you do.
Tolkien and CS Lewis were part of an unofficial “club” with other Oxford professors, meeting at an Oxford pub called The Eagle and Child (which they nicknamed the “Bird an Baby”) they called themselves the “Inklings “. I would love to have spent a night with a pipe and pint just listening to the conversations that went on there.
And that pub is still there!

Revelation is referred to as an American blend. It consist of Burley, Kentucky, Latakia, Perique, and Virginia. It is coarse cut and flavored with Fruit and Citrus. Sutliff makes a match blend of this tobacco and House of Windsor makes Revelation. I really like your videos.

Tolkien and Lewis were both WWI veterans and professors at Oxford so they had a lot in common. Tolkien also spent a lot of time translating medieval manuscripts into modern English.

I really enjoy your videos. that being said you have left out one of the most famous pipe smokers that I know. my father. cherry blend was his go to smoke and being a child of the sixties cartoons were a favorite of mine also. if popeye smoked spinich well I could too. I've never revealed this to anyone outside my family. one boring summer day I decided to obtain one of my father's many pipes I took it to the kitchen found a can of spinich opened it up filled the bowl with what I thought would be enough (not draining it) heard someone coming took off outside found my match stash (you always needed to have matches stashed just in case) tried to light up the pipe. well i put the pipe in my mouth lit the match took a big pull and the rest is history. tobacco laden spinich juice filled my mouth. unfortunately I swallowed it. not realizing what was about to insue. now light headed feeling dizzy and breaking out in a cold sweet the back door opened and my mom held the spinich can and yelled out to me was I going to finish it. she saw me on the ground to groggy to move came over to me and the jig was up. spending the next I don't know how long dry heaving and then falling fast asleep. funny thing is I wasn't punished for doing that. later on when I got older I asked my father why. he told me that he knew that that day I had learned a valuable life lesson. that pipe sat on the mantle in my father's study and every time I looked at it I was reminded of that summer day. I have many of my father's pipes and do enjoy a bowl every now and then (although I don't smoke out of his). the spinich pipe is long gone I expect it started to smell and my father knew that I had been tortured enough. just thought I'd share this with you and your followers. again thanks.

Hi Muttonchop. I hope you are well. Family is very important. I came across your Chanel a couple of months ago and have watched many of your videos. I new to pipe smoking and thoroughly enjoy it. I credit that to the information and the many things I’ve learned from you.
I live in Indiana but had moved away for career reasons. That took me to New England for several years and then out west. When my Dad was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer a couple of years ago I sold my house, quit my job and moved back to IN. I was fortunate to have been able to spend time with him until he passed in Jan 2020. I was with him when he passed. I wouldn’t have been if I had stayed out west. My mom has been in and out of the hospital recently and I’ve been able to be here for her. Some things are more important than all the stuff we seem to get caught up in with life. I’m glad you have been able to be with family.
Thank you for all you have done in the pipe smoking community. Your are a great man and teacher. I wish you all the blessings life has to offer.

He also had some early small roles in the Twilight Zone that I like to watch occasionally. I love the bent yellow Wellington he used to smoke, and from what I can find he smoked a blend called the Philosopher, which is reportedly close to modern London Blend 1000. no problem! Also, in the film 'dollars more' the pipe belonged to him (it was a Vienna Meer'), his eyes were odd colours: one green one blue, he couldn't run and had to use a circus horse during filming for ease - due to damaging his knees in a car crash, he'd cut off his right middle finger tip making his daughter a dolls house, prior to acting he was an accountant, and his real first name was Clarence. I adored the man: the reason I took up a pipe!Of course, he smoked other blends from tinderbox too, but that was one of his favoured ones!Love the vids, I only found your channel today but love it!All the best, Steve.

"Smoked" in England means "shot". For some reason when you said "he smoked three nuns" it didn't click in my head that three nuns is a tobacco.

Najey Rifai - that's pretty funny, not laughing at you but laughing with you, I watch a lot of British TV, one show I absolutely love is one called "Keeping up Appearances" there is a character on that show called Onslow, and he is always wanting a Fag, which means something totally different here in America lol, 👍👍👍

      @MuttnchopPiper  7 лет назад +16

Najey Rifai - that and the word Bum, here in America it means one who is poor, and wanders the country side. So the first time I heard "Make sure to wipe your Bum" I thought, why would I wipe a Bum? Did he get dirty somehow? Lol,lol, 😃😃😃

It absolutely doesn't. Smoked (meaning killed) is chiefly an American slang, unless you're talking about some sort of American-influenced ghetto slang.

For sure the Capstan that I smoked in the 1965 for 20 years was not duplicated by MacBaren correctly and the same goes for Three Nuns, they were great tobacco that I enjoyed for many years , now I smoke MacBaren Navy Flake and Solani N633 they are good tobaccos.

Gerald Ford's favorite tobacco was Edgeworth Ready-Rubbed. He only smoked Field and Stream when he couldn't get Edgeworth (from his personal bio).

Very interseting video, thank you for it!
I have also been intersted in famous pipe smokers. And I've once met a kind of correspondence between J. Tolkien and F. Smith.
    Sir,
As a pipe smoker, and since I know you are one too, I have this simple question for you: what is your favorite brand of pipe tobacco?
Thank you in advance for your highly anticipated answer,
    F. Smith
    -----
    Dear F. Smith,
There are a lot of tobacco brands, some better than others (Van Rossem's brand is not bad). But of all the ones I know, I am tempted to say that my favorite should be one of the varieties grown in the Southfarthing of the Shire, like the Longbottom Leaf. But I am sure that no man will ever surpass (nor equal) the Hobbits in growing pipe-weed, which finally leaves us only dreaming about it!
    Sincerely,
    JRRT
