I smoked cigarettes for many many years. I was absolutely addicted. I could not quit on my own. I had to get the Chantix. I have not had a cigarette since 2009. Pipes are totally different. I can go for days w/o picking it up. That NEVER happened with cigarettes. With pipes, the only addiction is the hobby it's self. I like the ritual and routine of setting everything up, smoking the pipe then cleaning it.

I took a pouch of Skoal as a “virgin” at work when I was 17. Almost threw up in a customer’s grocery bag from the nicotine sickness.
I quit smoking cigarettes in 2000. I had the strange benefit of being in a jam room that had a lot of second-hand smoke, so it was like an easy come down.
Covid stress has led me back to the smoke again, it was triggered when watching The Hobbit, and Gandalf is cleaning his pipe at the end of the third film. Glad it’s not addictive, and I’m liking the cherry flavored Captain Black.

What helps me manage high nic blends is
    1. Lower the amount of tobacco by smoking a smaller bowl or packing less.
    2. Don't pack tightly.
    3. Use a filter.
    4. Slow down the frequency of your draw.
    5. Lower the volume of your draw if necessary.
So as you can tell, it's mainly about slower cadence and good technique.

  • @vasostach666

The concept of the video almost suggests that nicotine is some unwantend substance in pipe tobacco, which throws me off a little. Tobacco became used and popular first and foremost because of the drug content, not a single tobacco type or form excluded. And yes you can get addicted to every type, some are more dangerous in that regard, some less. If nicotine didn't matter, then we can smoke peppermint or hay grass :) It is like you would act that you drink whiskey for the taste but dislike alcohol, you just can't separate those two and the same goes for tobacco and nicotine.
I don't mean to bash the video, it contains a lot of useful information, I just wanted to state some facts.

Everyone's body and brain chemistry is different, and therefore everyone will react differently to drugs. Let's not kid ourselves, nicotine is drug. Additive-free tobacco is addictive, however the addictive potential is mild. For me, it's about half as addictive as coffee, but more addictive than alcohol. If I'm smoking just one bowl of pipe tobacco a day every day for a while, and then I stop for whatever reason, I get a headache and feel a bit tense for about half a day, and I keep thinking about smoking until this passes. But it passes easily enough. Further, I have a friend who smokes additive-free rolling tobacco, and he's completely hooked. My father's godfather was completely hooked on cigars. But you are right about additive-laced cigarettes. I tried smoking pre-made cigarettes and was scared off by how addictive they are. I used painkillers heavily for years after I hurt my back, and quitting was the hardest thing I have ever done. Yet, just from getting my feet wet, I am convinced that pre-made cigarettes are more addictive than opiates.

    • @dee5298
      @dee5298 6 лет назад

Petox20x I agree with your assessment on the addictive potential of cigarettes. I have been addicted since I was 13 and it didn't take long. I quit for five years and started back a year or so ago as if I had never stopped. I'm sticking to pipe now and having withdrawals. Also, lexipro is up there but without the psychological addiction, both worse than opiates, Xanax, and way worse than alcohol after about a year of steadily going to bed blasted.

Been a cigarette smoker for almost 20 years now and was kicking the habit with the use of a vaporizer and e-juice. It was working better than any other method I attempted (cold turkey, gum, pharmaceuticals, etc.), until my state banned the sale of e-liquid. It has gotten to the point where my doctor suggested I try DMT or psilocybin mushrooms to try and kick the cigarette habit, but I've never tried psychedelics or hallucinogens. I have read recent studies that suggest these psychedelics may break your cigarette habit, but I fear the "bad trip" aspect of using these substances. After stumbling upon your videos, I believe I will give pipe smoking a try before doing anything else too radical...

I smoked cigarettes for about 10 years, finally quit then picked up chewing tobacco when I got into trade work. That's a 5 year habit now, so I'm no stranger to nicotine or addiction to it, but I can say pretty confidently it'd be hard to get hooked on pipes or cigars. I've quit chewing for 3 or 6 months at a time and, once the cravings are gone, I still have the tolerance (provided I smoke enough/strong enough tobacco) but its not a "lateral" move. I could smoke a bowl of Irish Flake and still have a weak craving for a dip right after, not because I "need" more nicotine, but because its a product engineered to form a habit. On the flipside I have relied on the pipe to help me quit chewing before. It doesn't 100% scratch the itch but the nicotine gets delivered and, if you can stick it out a few days the worst is over YMMV.
Thanks Chris for your great videos, you are the ONLY RUclips pipesmoker I subscribe to- you are kind, thoughtful and are dedicated to the hobby and to seeing it passed on. Long live the Chop indeed!

Another great video, thanks! I've found that the blends that affect me the most are things like 1792 Flake (and some of the other Samuel Gawith blends), and Peterson's Irish Flake, and I've found that making sure they are dry (by letting them dry much longer that seems necessary) helps these a lot. My theory is that when there is any moisture in them I puff harder and faster to try to keep them lit - and these high nic blend need to be sipped!!! I think this was the case with the Gawith and Hoggarth Sweet Maple Twist that we smoked for Blend Club a few months back. I really liked that blend (I think I gave it the highest rating of the group) but it was because I would slice off a couple coins, rub them out, and let them sit an dry for several hours before loading my pipe. I found that blend to be quite enjoyable that way and I didn't get the nic hit others mentioned. So, if you have something that is a little higher in moisture content, and is known to be high in nicotine, give that a try as well.

As you said, high nicotine blends should be smoked only after a full meal. Another point to observe is bowl size. I love Burley/Kentucky/Perique blends, but wouldn't want to smoke something like MacBaren's HH Bold Kentucky in a pipe that lasts me more than an hour. Smaller pipes providing a, say, 40 min. smoke are the way to go with such blends. For many it may also be wise to refrain from drinking spirits parallel to smoking a heavy tobacco; instead one should keep oneself hydrated by choosing a non-alcoholic beverage or at least one that's low in alcohol, like beer or a light wine. Observing these points, I've never experienced any nicotine sickness so far.

More important than the lack of additives, cigar and pipe tobacco nicotine takes much longer to get into the blood stream than that of cigarettes, because the smoke is not inhaled. The speed of the nicotine "hit" from cigarettes greatly increases the propensity for habit-formation. Also, pipes and cigars simply aren't nearly as quick and easy to smoke as cigarettes, so it's much harder to smoke them multiple times per day, every day.

All I can say is they both seem to hit *hard* on the nicotine, not unlike some of the times I've finished a Lucky Strike after being completely out for a few day's. It's all about the ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). For the lay person its brain food and has direct effects on your metabolism. Sugars and fats increase the ATP and it helps balance out the nicotine in your system. It doesn't actually make it go away as much as it brings back balance or homeostasis. On the subject of addiction. I smoke one or two hand rolled cigarettes every now and then (maybe once or twice a week). I usually stick to "organic" tobacco blends that contain no additives. But once I couldn't find any, so I bought a Vanilla flavored pack (Look Out, I think was the brand), and they were good. But they became increasingly addictive really fast. So yeah, everything's good to enjoy so long as it is done in moderation.
Also, when I was a teen I once smoked like three cigarettes with my cousin (she was older than me). And after that I felt really really sick. She told me eating a green apple would... And it did! So another "remedy" I guess.

This happened a couple of weeks ago, and some other times. The jitteryness, sweating, and nausea. Every time it was because I smoked my pipe too long. Last time, I think I was smoking for about an hour. Sometimes, just setting a time limit prevents the nicotine sickness. Mine is about 20 - 40 minutes, but I'm kind of a lightweight. Good videos, Muttnchop. Thanks.

I have been thinking about trying pipe tobacco for a while. I always associated tobacco with cigarettes. I remember my pap and dad smoking pipes when I was a kid and liking the smell. Sounds good. I have a series of videos teaching you what you need to know. There are 3 in particular, they are all titled how to smoke your pipe using the breathe method. Before you start actually smoking, watch those 3 videos, if you don’t you will get tongue bite and throw the pipe away.

Thank you for the advice. I'm a new pipe smoker but I've occasionally smoked cigars for years and upon my first light I experienced the nicotine "buzz". I've felt it before with cigars but nothing to the extent of my first light using a pipe. I smoked Peterson's Old Dublin and I'd say I was 1/3 of the way through the bowl and it hit me. I knew to put the pipe down before I got sick, but I have to say it was a much more intense feeling than with the cigars I've smoked. I had just had dinner and so I can say that I wasn't expecting it. I later finished the bowl when the feeling passed and I was able to finish the bowl, granted I still had a little of the "buzz" but nothing compared to the initial light.

Awesome video. I actually have a bit of a nicotine high right now lol. I was puffing a bit robustly on my corncob during my commute home from work.
I find sugar definitely helps lessen the effects. I often have a glass of sweet iced tea or a craft beer when I smoke. The sugar does just as you stated and the cold beverage cleanses the palate and seems to help with tongue bite as well.

Back before i gained a tolerance to chewing tobacco i used to get really sick from it and the best cure i found was to put sugar in my lip at the 1st sign of sickness... Since then i have gotten used to the nicotine in chew and pipe tobacco and it doesnt negative effect me as much. Once you get sick from it a few times, you'll be able to see sickness coming and stop before it happens

First of all you look like a boss no matter what you put on.
Now, I have no idea why anybody would want to "watch out" for the nicotine. The lightheadedness you describe is actually one of the things that invited me to the practice of smoking in the first place. In fact, I have something special for when I want to get a strong nicotine buzz, it's called Dokha tobacco smoked in a Medwakh pipe. Real potent stuff that will probably make you fall on your back if you view something like Nightcap as "high in nicotine".
This is why I only smoke the strongest pipe tobaccos. The smoke being tasted and not inhaled, I feel like I need something really strong in order to feel any nicotine when I'm smoking a pipe. Even twists seem "mild" to me, though I do feel the nicotine when I'm halfway through but let me tell you it's a good feeling.

In my life I have smoked some cigarettes (socially, I was never a regular smoker, but would bum one occasionally during a night out or at a party), the occasional cigar, and my pipe fairly regularly. I've honestly never really felt anything from the nic when smoking my pipe, even some of the blends that are supposedly higher in nicotine. I have started to feel a little lightheaded or jittery near the end of a big or strong cigar, once even feeling slightly nauseous, but to be fair I hadn't eaten much in the last couple hours. In comparison, I have gotten lightheaded from the very first puff of a cigarette each and every time I've smoked one. Without fail. It's a night and day difference. This is mainly advice for those coming to pipe smoking without having been a regular cigarette smoker, because I was that guy too, worried that I would get addicted, and it's just not really an issue with pipes unless you literally smoke nic-heavy burley flakes or brown twist around the clock and even then the level of nic in your system is just so much lower than with cigarettes, I have a hard time imagining it being very hard to quit.

Smoked cigarettes for 30 years. Vaping got me off them for good.
I'm not one to ban everything but God they where the worst choice I ever did. 6 years later I decided to get into cigars and they are addictive. Nowhere close to cigarettes.
The best way to explain the level difference is I would kill for a cigarette and wow it would be nice to have a cigar but owell and move on. Cigarettes are always on your mind.
My advice is just to stay away from them.

I very much agree with you MC. Not once in my pipe smoking career have I felt that I 'needed' to smoke. I actually recommend to my friends trying to quit cigarettes to pick up a pipe to help with tapering off.
Strangely, according to medical scholars, nicotine raises blood sugar levels. I have always thought that it lowers blood sugar, because low blood sugar has a similar effect of causing lightheadedness. Perhaps they are spreading a false claim to deter diabetics from smoking ;)

Fresh air also helps, because when you're feeling sick and still smelling the smoke, especially indoors, it can make you even sicker. (But maybe that's just me) And if you already feel sick, do yourself a favour and just go to the bathroom. After going to the bathroom you will instantly feel a lot better. It happens to all of us at some point, although I think it is more common to happen with cigars.

When I smoked cigars two years ago, I could hardly go for a day without smoking at least one. I quit for 11 months, briefly relapsed last December, and made the switch over to pipes in mid-January. I smoke anywhere from zero to five days a week, and it is much easier on my wallet than cigars were (even though I recently expanded my pipe collection to seven), not to mention that many of my friends compliment me on my cologne when they are in fact smelling black Cavendish with an occasional hint of Latakia.
The times I tried cigarettes never ended well.

It was really nice to know about beer cheese (since I've never heard of it before, I will try to make it for sure) and some effects of heavy tobacco, which I felt recently while smoking Nightcap (I think I will need to try some more virginia blends. Unfortunately, it is not popular at all to smoke a pipe here and I've never seen a person with pipe, cigarettes only; but I often offer my friends to smoke a pipe and some of them like it, so, I suppose, the number of pipesmokers will grow in here. Websites you recommend and maybe a handful of pipes you think would be good for a beginner? Maybe tobacco as well.

Recommendations for first time cigar and pipe smokers. Eat a hearty meal beforehand, and do not drink alcohol beforehand. And don't chief your tobacco down, nice and easy so you can stop before you're too far gone. And don't start your pipe or cigar right before bed, in case you do get light-headed or sick. Cigeretts have ammonia added to increase nicotine potency. That is the main one anyway. Tobacco has ammonia naturally in lower amounts the more it's cured the less ammonia and nicotine. So if you are concerned go for longer cured blends which are typically darker.

smoked cigarettes for about 2 years and i have been 1 pack a day smoker i tried every way out there to quit but failed each time.
1 month ago my lungs just couldnt take it anymore so i started chewing tobacco and i did teach my body to get nicotine from the mounth but then i realized that even after chewing tobacco i still had cravings for cigarettes.
so i just got back to my old pipe and now its 10 days without any cigarette or even inhaling pipe smoke.

Man, I've been around the park with Nicotine Sickness, been smoking Cigars for a few years now. Started smoking pipes about two months ago, and my only bout of Nicotine Sickness was when I foolishly, and quite drunkenly, decided to smoke two bowls in a row. Really bad mistake, vomited a few times when I got home that night. I always feel significantly better once I vomit once or twice after it gets to its peak, but I don't suggest that for everyone.

Good discussion. Some folks are more prone to the effects of nicotine I guess. I had smoked and dipped for years prior to pipes, and I guess compared to those, pipes don't even register with me.

Tom Fortin - I chewed tobacco for a while, but every time I did I tossed my cookies, so I stopped, I guess I’m a tobacco lightweight. Lol, lol. 👍👍👍

Good helpfully video thank you .I smoke one or two pipefulls a day usually mid-day and evenings and I look forward to this ,as you would to a meal , I think we all like to try different tobaccos , like yourself I like to be aware of nicotine , but nicotine and a satisfying smoke tend to go hand in hand , however I have found myself a mild to medium straight va with plenty of taste . Don't get hooked on the strong ones . All the best.

Congrats for the great job you're doing. I start pipeing recently. Another day I've tried the Five Brothers which is 100% burley. wow...i realy could feel the nicotine. And also got a headacke... on the other hand I've heard this kind of tobacco is good to "clean" the pipe... mainly when you smoked aromatics on it. Maybe a video about this? best!

Domingos Urbano - Thank you my friend. I have never heard of using Burly to clear away the taste of aromatics, so I will have to research this information to find out if it's fact, or myth. 👍👍👍

This is why I take a puff every few minutes. People crack jokes about how slow I smoke, but IDC...I want to enjoy it rather than rush it and get sick.

What is happening is that Nicotine is making your blood sugar drop, and if you are diabetic (as I am), this can be very dangerous. This is why taking sugar when you get that feeling works. I know it well.
