I find it amazing that you have to buy a kitchen when you move to a new flat. Here in the UK kitchens come as standard 99% of the time. Love your videos.

What a hassle to take your kitchen with you to a new home with no guarantee your stuff will fit. Normally, kitchen and appliances are usually considered as fixtures and therefore not not really movable here in the US.

Oh that’s a shame. The higher quality kitchens you can easily take with you to your new flat. We have a different plan for it though :)

Here in the US kitchens come standard with apartments and houses. A brand new house can have custom finishes that you pay extra for.
An oven that cleans itself is called a self cleaning oven.
What happens to your old kitchen when you leave ? Take care.

Actually the flat where we live in belongs to family and they will rent it with the kitchen.

An interesting thing, that Americans don't know about Germans/Europeans, and Germans/Europeans, don't know about Americans; In most countries in Europe, neither rental nor owned homes, apartment or free-standing houses, do not come with a kitchen....no cabinets, no appliances, just an empty room. While in America, all rentals usually come with a kitchen. And fairly often, so do homes that are _for sale._ That includes not only cabinets, but also kitchen appliances. So I bet all your American viewers, are going to be wondering if you just bought a new house.
Ps: That oven function is called: _Self-Cleaning._
PPS: I enjoy designing kitchens. I enjoy planning them to be as functional as possible. _(Joke)_ I belong to Kitchen Nerds Anonymous. It's very addictive.

Hahahaha! The apartment that we will move in has an 25 years old kitchen (wonder happen) with really bad kitchen appliances. The plan is to sell it:)

In Australia it is unlawful to sell or rent a dwelling (house, flat, unit) without a functioning cooking appliance such as an oven, cook top or similar. So homes come with at least a basic kitchen. The closest to your German experience here would be IKEA, but a lot of people have noticed their material quality has gone down since they moved manufacturing to Sth East Asia. Outside of that there are lots of smaller, locally based manufacturers who sell direct or supply 'builders' (US 'contractors?) in their area who arrange the installation including plumbing and electrical as needed. People tend to choose their own appliances (fridge, stove, dishwasher) then get the cabinetry made to fit them. Self cleaning ovens are referred to as 'Pyrolytic' ovens here.

Thanks! To have a basic kitchen for rent must be great. When I moved to Frankfurt I was looking for flat with at least kitchenette - because buying kitchen is so expensive. Not many have such money to spend on kitchen, especially if you don’t know how long you will be staying in that place. Madness. Thankfully there are some flats with kitchens for rent, the rent is more expensive though. Everything has a price.

You buy anything from Miele, it should last at least forty years if made in Germany and not the Far East! Our washing machine was bought in 1982🎉

Self cleaning oven is what we call it in the US. Be aware that some ovens self cleaning functions can wreck havoc on the electrical components. Something about the super high heat and the digital components. It seems to be a problem with some modern ovens. Good luck with your remodeling.

I don't know if this is the case with every self-cleaning oven, but many of them give off toxic gases whilst self-cleaning.

In the USA there are strict laws about how a kitchen is assembled here, which I always believed is why our homes/apartments have them built by the contractors, who would know the laws and have to have their buildings inspected and approved before sale.
The only reason I can find on the internet for why Germany (and some other Euroean countries) make you supply your own is because the governments don't tell builders they have to. How inconvenient. Everybody needs to eat.

Hahahaha! The companies that sell kitchen always know how to plan it (for example whats the distance between a sink and the oven should be), I am not aware of any laws in Germany about how to assemble kitchen. I will need to ask Matthias ;)

I still think it is crazy you have to often buy a kitchen for homes in Germany, especially for rental homes. In the US, all rental apartments come with kitchen cabinets, stove, sink, and fridge/freezer as a bare minimum. People only design their own kitchens if they are building a house, or if they are doing a major renovation on a house they own.

    • @cooking-the-world

Yes, kitchen is a huge investment and if you just renting, its probably not worth to spend this kind of money.

So, I take it that it is common to buy a flat in Europe, I imagine there's not much land that isn't already being used for something. All the designs look very attractive. My being a lumber inspector, my house has a fair amount of wood in it (red oak cabinets), but that white with black hardware looks really sharp.
