This turned out beautiful! Exactly what I’d like to do in my kitchen to my ugly tiles.
Thank you so much!
This is an excellent tutorial. Thank you Grace! I am an experienced DIY painter. I did this on my expensive 2 x 4 noce polished travertine subway backsplash with all the prep shown above to the letter co-incidentally. I had to redo my professional painter's job during a remodel because I was able to scratch it off with my nail. I rolled the whole thing over again with Ben Moore FRESH START primer 2 coats. I then used Ben Moore Advance in a high gloss for the finish coats. I painted each tile a soft grey, with 1.5 " angled brush leaving the grout line alone. I did go over some of them in a slightly different shade by adding some cream color paint to the grey to slightly vary the color, to give it a handmade tile look. Yes it took time, but you cannot tell at all that I painted it. It saved me thousands of dollars and looks like high end handmade tiles. I just wipe it off gently with soapy water when I need to. It's been 2 years and no issues whatsoever. Well done again Grace in my space:)
I love the extra attention you paid! I bet those details make it all the more beautiful!👏🏻
@@GraceInMySpace Yours looks beautiful exactly the way you did it on 1.5"s ! Perfect job.
Beautiful, I have white ceramic subway tiles and want to paint them black instead of replacing them. After watch this video, I think I can do it. Thanks for sharing ✨
You’re welcome!
Looks wonderful! Love the brightness ❣️
Thank you so much!
That sure went next level…good idea !
Thank you so much!
That looks fantastic!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Great job!
Thanks!
Good video, but you did not say what type of Kilz primer you used, was it the
Oil based primer ( original) or a water based primer ? That's very important, and
I think the oil based primer is a lot better, although messy to work with, and clean
up after. Could you post a reply on this ? Oil based or Water based primer ? thanks
I use water based because it is easier to work with. However, oil based is a better quality. Especially if you have prominent wood knots to cover. Oil based is being banned in some states so it may not be found for long!
You inspired me to paint my light brown tiles . .Enjoyed listening to your child directing you 😊
Wonderful! Good luck on the project!
Can you tell me what primer you used ?
Yep! I gave three options in the video. This is a good one! rstyle.me/+Umi1BveGbGy5Bkkc1pKqcw
use a special primer?
Yep! I gave three options in the video. This is a good one! rstyle.me/+Umi1BveGbGy5Bkkc1pKqcw
Am i the only one who likes the BEFORE tiles 😅
I’m sure they still make them! Check your local stores 👏🏻
yes you are this is hideous
I love the before tiles way more as well. But I fully respect her video, it showed real expertise, she was very knowledgeable on the subject and her work looked good vs amateur. I suppose if I was going to all that trouble though, I'd paint all the tiles insane voodoo neon bright or dia de los meurtos. Im not a fan of the modern make everything look like a hospital neutral that seems to be so prevailing. However! If I was doing it for someone else's house, I will choose the cream/white etc like the video 😅
I just have one question. I have a gas stove should I worry about heat resistance?
I’ve always had a gas stove and never had a problem! It really isn’t any different than if you had painted drywall behind the stove, but I just always use a hood vent fan to pull heat upward.
You definitely inspired me to paint my ugly peachy tiles in the kitchen...thanks so much:) BTW-What is the product TSP?
It is a cleaning product. Found at most grocery or hardware stores!
Is the process any different if some of the tiles you’re painting over are glass? Thank you!
As long as it’s prepped properly it will be good!
I'm finding multiple Kilz primers. Which one please?
I prefer kilz premium.
I'd be nervous. I'm no DIY girl... yet you inspire me🤝🤜🤛🧂🔥🧂🔥🧂🔥😍😍😍😍😍😍💐 your child was super cute!
I loved hearing his little voice 🤗
How do you seal it so paint won’t chip off?
If you’re using quality paint, there’s no need to seal.
I’m surprised you didn’t protect your counter tops also 😮I would have had too ! It looks much better!
I’m not much for using drop cloths 😉
The before tiles do fit in perfectly with colour of cabinets, what will round this off will be white, black or grey cupboards.
Worried about not covering that countertop
I’m a clean painter. Cover if you need to 😁
Hi! Do you recommend a sealer after painting, if so any recommendations? I’m planning to start this TOMORROW!!
If you use high quality cabinet paint then no need to seal! I like Benjamin Moore advance. Good luck! You’ve got this.
I am really going to enjoy this Reno. You’ve captured my attention!
I hope you do!
thanks for sharing, this video give me more direction to start painting my tiles, i need to bright up the kitchen, please, what color do you recommend for sage green walls, brown cabinet, window frames are white. Thanks again , I didn't know about liquid sandpaper
You could do the same white as your window trim to keep it cohesive.
Thank you so much for the tips I really didn't want to use tile paint so I think this system will work well for my back splash that I want to upgrade without taking the tile down!
You are so welcome!
I liked the other tile better though
Nice job. I have that almost exact same tile, but with more shades and wanted to paint mine to update/modernize it. It is too busy and dark for my liking, especially since I have counter tops with a stone-like pattern. I'm also painting my cabinets and replacing the doors (all 70s vintage golden oak).
I never thought to use regular door/trim paint and may even make it match the accent wall color, giving a seamless look yet preserving the tile's texture behind the counters.
Good tips here.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the lesson
My pleasure!
You could sea sponge paint it different layers of colors too. That would look nice.
Great idea!
You did amazing, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much!
Wow! Great improvement!
Thank you so much!
Could eggshell sheen be used instead of satin or semi gloss.?
Yes, but it will be harder to clean.
I can’t believe she’s not using any plastic covering on the counter !
Never do!😄
Awesome
What kind of primer and paint to use
I like Kilz or BIN shellac primers and Benjamin Moore advance cabinet paint.
What kind of Primer did you use?
I used Kilz but you can use any high adhesion primer. BIN is also a good brand.
Amazing!
I love liquid sandpaper. Great product.
Works so well!
I May have missed this but what about cleaning the backsplash? Does the paint hold up well?
Never had a problem! I just use soapy water and wipe dry.
Great!
Thank you so much!
Very nice. But im thinking of using gloss instead if semigloss. Thoughts?
Go for it!
You did such a great job on the tiles!
What a difference 😍
Thanks so much! 😊
How many coats did you use?
2!
Wow!
I get nervous too over a diy that is permanent. It turned out beautifully, Sarah.🤍
Thanks my friend!
Didn't you have to seal the tiles after painting?
If you use a good paint you don’t need to. Sealers will likely yellow the color if you do a lighter color so I just like to use a semi gloss finish.
That looks awesome. I want to go from a lighter color to something dark so I assume we have to regrout after the painting.
Regrouting only works if you chip out all the existing grout. Otherwise there isn’t any depth for it to sit in. If you want to avoid that, you can try a paint pen for a new grout color!
