There are two elements that are key to the Tesla Turbine:
The first (which you have) is that instead of impellers and blades it uses it uses a stack of disks that are separated by spacers. The rotation of the disk pack is caused by the boundary layer, the viscosity (stickiness) of the disk surface against the moving fluid.
The second (which you missed) is that the fluid (air, water, steam, gas, liquid) is exhausted out the side along the axis of the shaft. This configuration forces the energy of the fluid into a spiral and compresses the energy into the center of the disks and exhausts through center holes. THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS.
If the fluid enters from the top and exits the bottom, the rotation and the speed of the disk pack will not go faster than the speed of the fluid.
But, if the fluid exits the center of the disk pack the energy gets added to the rotational energy of the disk and the faster the disk rotates, it begins to pull fluid into the turbine. The turbine attains speeds faster than the speed of the fluid. RPM’s can reach multiple tens of thousands.
If your add another Tesla turbine but configured so that the exhaust of the first becomes the Intake of the second (the second becomes a pump) the second turbine helps remove back pressure on the first turbine for even more performance (energy efficiency)
When Tesla first built the turbines, his biggest problem was that the materials of the time were not strong enough to withstand the forces generated by the rotations of the disk packs and shaft.

Additionally seeing how high RPMs were meant to be achieved with this design, make sure you balance it. Vibrations of course will decrease your efficiency, and in a worst case situation, cause your turbine to self destruct, which with high speeds could be trouble for you.

  • @boblewis5558

Would it not make sense to use the platters from disk drives? They are precision cut disks, designed to withstand at least 5400 rpm and some are double that! ... That's their RATED speed so are bound to be able to go higher! By how much though! The bearings they use are also rated for those speeds too.

Not a tesla turbine. Water has to enter the discs from the outer edges and exit from their center. Another way to verify my claim is to try running it in reverse or as a pump.

That's right Jon, I've just searched the comments to see if anyone picked up on it and you're the only one who did!
The TT works best when the output goes through the centre of the blades, that's when maximum efficiency is reached.
The spiral effect is the key to it's true nature!

The hard part is the nozzle. First of all, you have to take into account the whole piping system, making sure that no pipe, part or fitting has a smaller cross section than the nozzle. You want the highest velocity of the fluid to occur in the nozzle tip entering into the turbine housing, if any part of the piping system has a smaller cross section than the nozzle, then the highest fluid velocity will occur in the piping system and not in the nozzle and you will loose a lot of performance. From the top of my head, for experimental work, use a nozzle with a cross section not larger than a 1/3 of the smallest cross section of the piping system. Forget de Laval-type nozzles, they are hard to fit properly in a dynamic environment (and they don't work with water). Use a simple converging nozzle, a narrowing cone with the smallest cross section entering into the turbine housing. Using a converging nozzle is a fast recipe for success. The easiest way to make a converging nozzle is to take a short copper pipe (brake line or similar) and use a pliers or a vise to flatten the tip of the pipe a bit, maybe half way shut or little more. Try to get as even cross section as possible. When you flatten the tip of the nozzle you essentially reduce the cross section exactly where it is needed. Make a few different ones and see which one has the best performance for the system pressure and flow rate you have.
Second important thing is to have shiny mirror like surfaces on the disks to enable the fluid to grab the disks, think of a drop of water on a dry vertical sheet of glass, it sits there defying gravity, you don't want the drop of water run off like on the surface of a green leaf. A rough unpolished disk surface is very bad for performance. For your experimental setup with water, make the disks out of acrylic plastic sheets, they have a glass like surface and will work well with little effort. Use them as is to get a base line performance test. Make a second set of disks and polish them with a fine plastic abrasive used in automotive detailing, buffing of old dull tail lights looking like new shiny ones. Wash off any remaining chemical residue.
Third, absolutely crucial, the fluid enters into the turbine through the nozzle along the circumference of the disk pack and exits at the center of the disk pack, out through both sides, or one side, of the turbine.
When using water as working fluid you can consider tilting the turbine vertical with the generator on top, having the water drop down. You still need to make sure the water flows through the disk pack and not along the sides. Some minor leakage around the sides of the disk pack are hard to avoid, but make an effort to minimize it. I have considered to use a pipe as an axle for the disk pack and leading the fluid out of the housing through the hollow axle.
    Keep experimenting! :)

Why do people not realize that many of Tesla's designs were genius because he merged competing physical mechanics into a specific intended function. In the case of his turbine its centrifugal forces and drag against pressure, they harmoniously work together to produce torque and RPM's IF the outlet is perpendicular and opposite the direction of rotation for the gas/liquid. This design doesn't have that feature so it looses much of the original design advantages.
