  • In the space of just 15 minutes, Schubert takes us on a journey of profoundly different emotions with one underlying focus: death.
Now a pillar of the chamber music repertoire, this string quartet was written by the prolific Austrian composer after suffering a serious illness and realising that he was inching ever closer to his end, despite still being in his twenties. It’s a death march of sorts, which Schubert spins into a macabre theme and variations, flashing through a range of emotional states, before turning in on itself and expiring.
This is chamber music for exploring deep inner struggles and the very idea of mortality. Come, journey into the black of the night.
