Secret of Mana Remake PS4 | The Completionist | New Game Plus

- Secret of Mana may not be the most known title from Square Enix, to me it is one of the best game released on the SNES. It had enough of a following to get a 3D remake for the PS4, but with these remakes they tend to change or add things. So let's see how the PS4 remake holds up in my Secret of Mana review.

Curious about New Game Plus and the removal of previous Completionist episodes? The answers are in my update video: • The Future Of The Comp...
Take on the role of a the unlikely hero Randi as he comes across a magic sword and is tasked with befriending the eight elementals to fight off the evil empire. Secret of Mana is a classic JRPG, and I might be a bit biased because I loved the pixel version and don't exactly understand why they made a 3D remake instead of a HD pixel release. The characters got makeovers in the Secret of Mana PS4 remake, but they are still the same quirky and memorable characters. I've got problems with small details in the game, but they start to add up to become an issue. See how the two games compare in my Secret of Mana review!
Let me know what you thought about my Secret of Mana review! Which do you prefer: 2D or 3D Mana?
Also let me know what other games I should re-complete for New Game Plus!

I pretty much came to the same conclusion as Jirard...It's good, but its not great and a remake of a game of this caliber should be great.
Yeah it's a really bad remake. But weirldy enough it can still be fun to play because it's based on the original game. Maybe that says something about the quality of the original
The return of Neeko the price gouging cat
Still kind of on the fence about the remake myself. It's kind of like I don't love it OR hate it. And in some ways that's almost worse than hating it.
The original is so good, I don’t really want to try the remake. Might as well just play the original instead of the remake. Also cool to watch TRGs let’s play of it!!!

You know this looks more like a fanmade remake when the minimap LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A RPGMAKER MAP.
What game, that you purchased, disappointed you the most?
The Completionist well I would have to say zone of the enders 2
Stuntman Ignition
Evolve
that’d have to be black desert online after having played ffxiv for months. looked good, played not so good
Tales of Heart R for my vita.... that game is a stain on the Tales Franchise and on my download list.
Loved the first 3 person play through references throughout, even the flash of the good old Elbow pad!
Update: the ring system now shows the characters faces so you always know which character you are on.
Didn't watch the episode yet but I hope Jirard will be annoyed by Neeko again.
Edit: 21:29 OH YES THANK YOU!! I NEEDED THAT LAUGH XD
NOW GIMME YOUR MONEY
When did the laugh happen?
Neeko the "Price Gouging" Cat
I honestly enjoy the SNES version. It's so artistic moreraw. Not sure how to explain it. I think it's the bits is what makes it more enjoyable to look at.
I guess it's time to rewatch the "First Ever Three-Player Elbowpad Any Percent Completion Run™" of Secret of Mana again.
Freaking hilarious run that deserves more attention.
The summer of 1994 was the best summer. Spent all 3 months glued to this on the SNES. Best summer ever.
Am i the only one that thinks the ps4 version looks like a phone game.
Probably because the original SD was remade into a phone game and this one looks the same as that.
Mlg Jigglypuff the developers make only mobile games well Xeed does. They got way better with trials tho.
I was actually thinking it could've passed as an early 3DS game
My first thought was it looked like a mobile game or a crisp 3ds game
THANK YOU. That is my problem with so many of these reskin "remakes"
I’ve always said Mana with the “ahh” sound. Not the “aaa” sound
"In the US we know him as "Flame-y" whut? I always said "Flam-me"...
Same here... I'm from the US and all of my friends pronounced it as "Flam-me" too, haha
Man, I'm so glad you still do The Completionist! Been watching since the "Originals" came back to catch up and wow, it's come so far. Much respect!!!
I was so happy when I first heard about the remake, but seeing the actual result is devastating: It has no soul; No effort. They just took the mobile version and slapped a PS4 label on it. And don' t get me started on the butchered OST.
it's a secret to everyone.
ah yes the three genders
Man
Woman
Sprite
Actually it is hero, woman, sprite.
LOSTLEAD8R lmao
JackhammerJesus her0? Really?
Sorry, but my sources refer to them as "the hero", "the girl" and "the sprite".
Man and Woman aren't genders, male and female are. Plus they are boy and girl.
And to me, Sprite is a girl too.
my god, it took me three restarts of this video to realize you said "the SNES-era" and not "the ass-in-the-ass"-era right at the start.

They could have pleased more by just releasing a translated version of the third game.
Riiiight!?
They were going to, but the problem is they were using the remake of Secret of Mana to test the waters and see if there was interest in the series. When they saw all the people whining about the remake, they immediately gave up on ever releasing a Western port or remake of SD3.
You can find #3 with an english translation in emulation.
^^ Yeah, and it's pretty good
Oh boy do I have news for you. :D
3:54 RIP only 3 player run of Secret of Mana to be completed. :’(
do wonder if he will get removed from any videos where it won't be much work
It looks like the entire playthrough has been re-uploaded.
cerulean tear yep! I made a playlist of them on my channel. 😁
Huh, this actually looks great for a PS2 game.
...Wait, what do you mean it's for the PS4?
ps2 had better visuals 😂
Just found your channel and am loving it man! Really appreciate how in depth you get with reviews. I just started replaying golden sun then found your videos. Next is chrono trigger for sure. Had to comment once you made the Muppet song reference. Love your channel and I know it was a while ago but congrats on 1 mil!
Missed this game entirely so glad I get to enjoy it on my PS4.
Anybody hear the rumor that Jirard is a sweet, lovely dude?
Bamadeus ... Not a rumor. He is a beastly love-man.
You guys are so weird to just comment this
If that is weird then I don't want to be normal.
Yo, watching the live stream and seeing the the game crashing in real time was unreal and rough as all get out. Loved the episode! Keep up the good work!
Oh man, I just remembered that in-n-out drink cup that used to be in the background of the original intro haha it's been a long ride. Keep up the great work dude!

for the love of god never let 14 guest composers with completely different styles between eachother remix an entire soundtrack as a grab bag
This was one of your best voice overs, I liked it a lot man 🤙🏻
The nostalgia glasses are strong with this one
Well this ep hasn't aged well.
@Menthols he usually receives his games for free ;)
But, I totally agree with you. Games should be released not-broken!
One of my favorite episodes! Thank you Jirard When I was rewatching all the past 120 episodes, I always went to watch that episode. It’s so freaking good!
just wondering was planning to eventually buy the remake on pc. does it have the same crashing problem on pc or no?
Played the original with my older brother when we were around 11/12. Some of the most cherished memories of my life. The soundtrack single-handedly formed my love for music
I missed the Cannon Travel animations, even when there's a track just for that on the soundtrack as far as I know ...
CONGRATULATIONS ON 900K!!!
Lol I found your anger at Neko hilarious
I just realized that means you'll have to go through Skyrim again. Poor Jirard
But on the flip side this time he can complete Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 Final Mix instead of the vanilla versions of those games. I think he's in for a treat because KH2FM in particular is fantastic. One of the best games I ever played, if not the best.
MabinogiKHVidegamer He and Alex are playing KH2FM on Beard Bros. right now
Deconstruction JD Interesting. Never watched BBs but I may check it out.
MabinogiKHVidegamer I prefer them leaps and bounds beyond Game Grumps or the other let's play channels that i won't name. But yeah, good stuff.
Ultima228 hell probably play the remake
The only things I can agree with here are the crashes and the load zones. Everything else, I’m kinda on board for. The remade music, for the most part, is on point. I picked up on the menu system instantly, and everything was pretty enjoyable. It didn’t erase the game I love, just gave me something else to enjoy.
"the music is on point" SHIT THE FUCK!?

Woah now... first-ever 3-player Let's Play of Secret of Mana? I don't know about that...!
Secret of Mana was our launch series for Season Two of IONGAMING, running from January 2017 to March 2017, in a whopping 62 episodes.
That (most excellent, well done) Super Beard Bros. series ran 19 episodes from May 2017 to July 2017.
I fear we must petition to rightfully take that title back from you, good sirs. :)
Lorenzo Azuero That, I cannot argue.
12:26
In defense of "un-DEEN" that's how I always pronounced it.
I never considered the Long "I" until I met Undyne in Undertale.
Not gonna lie, Jirard, the "default name" thing is a silly complaint. Most games nowadays do this, but apparently you're not sure how to feel with it here? That's sorta silly over something minor.
I admit it's a strange complaint and yet it's one that a lot of older players will feel. When you play a game and are given sole decision to name your characters it really adds to your connection to the characters. On several occasions I will spend minutes relaxing on my couch contemplating what I should name my character because the name will add to his personality. However, when the characters are given a name already then your decision is to use the name the developer gave them or change it. To be honest, it feels a little odd when I change it.
Allow me to give you an example which will clarify my point. When you adopt an old dog from the shelter, you are allowed to call it whatever you want, but odds are this dog has already been given a name by his previous owners or by the shelter workers.
cerulean tear But the "owners" of the SoM characters don't care if you change the name. Why would they give the option to change the name otherwise? This is coming from one who prefers to use the default names for characters that already have their own unique backstory, customizable or not like Robin in FE13.
+cerulean tear What a stupid thing to waste time on. "What text do you want to appear a few times that does nothing". It doesn't matter if Link's name is Link or buttfarts. Hes still Link regardless.
Link? Red? Blue? All of these names and others are around in the early games. Unless we're talking even further back. Maybe we shouldn't have named Pac man that and just let everybody else decide what he should be called. It's the stupidest fucking argument.
It's a weird complaint since the characters had those names for a while (as far as I can understand it, the US localization back in the day just kinda erased the names for the more generic Boy / Girl / Sprite - so it's really just getting corrected).
I also find it weird that he harps on the game for the artstyle. I found the low-poly-ish, cartoonish artstyle fits the game very well and I actually really liked how they translated the pixel-art into 3D models. The elementals especially look very awesomely detailed if you look at them in the Album (they're modelled after their artwork from Children Of Mana onwards)
Another great vid, Jirard. However, you using that Muppet song as a joke reminds me of a video my sister-in-law posted on Facebook of my nephew learning that song. He's 3 now and loves it when someone prompts him to sing it. So thank you for making me feel even more proud of him as his uncle.
Anybody else really put of by the pictures not being strait in the intro haha. Great video Jirard, loved secret of mana as a kid.
The remake definitely felt like it came out as a GameCube or PS2 game in 2018. It felt like Mighty No. 9 did: just kinda okay, despite all the effort expected in this. But all the game crashes added to the original quirks left in a game that was supposedly rebuilt from the ground up, made it a rough time. And the because I did miss out on equipment drops only available in the Pure Lands, I had wished for an added Neeko shop to buy the rarest items to make completing the game possible without restarting all over - which I’m NOT doing!!! Choose the original over this
there was a triple pack of mana games that came out in japan with original pixel art but we didn't get it because it might take away from this remake. the GB release, this game, and the sequel we never got.
Should of had Legend of Mana too.
would of been great but that would of just made things worse considering we didn't even get the product that did come out.
Boy do I have news for you. :)
21:55 i love that little Easter egg from legend of mana
Secret of Mana (the original) was actually the first video game I played with my niece (who was 4 at the time). I was playing it on my mini and she saw Popoi's sprite and loved their hair color. I told her the game was 2-player, plugged in the second controller and we even took a boss down together. After that, I introduced her to other SNES games I played as a kid and some I didn't get to play until I was an adult. If she ever decides to be a gamer too, I just want that to be the first gaming memory she'll look back on.
Squarenix: lets update these early-PS1 graphics to be late-PS1 graphics!
Me: for what purpose?
Early PS2* graphics
I personally like the new art style. It generally has a cute art style, and bad voices can be entertaining.
I never really cared for this game, but I don't like the hate for the graphics from other youtubers.
I honestly dont see the problem it looks cartoonish which fits with the story and tone, plus they resemble there characters.
Irrational nostalgia blind is always trendy ya know.
It looks kinda bland honestly. They could of done so much more in detail especially since it's a PS4 game.
Wobbey363 If i had to make a guess i think it was originally made for the vita like the previous game but moved it to PS4 to increase sells in the west.
I think they could've done better for it being on the PS4 , but the aesthetic is pleasing.
My brother and sister and I did 3 player with this game. It was so fun. One of my all time faves. I was a teenager when it came out, but still... high on my all time list.
Damn it! Now that Mana-mana song's stuck in my head.
Again.
Thanks Jirard :l
I’m thinking about completing the Kingdom Hearts series on proud mode since I’ve beaten most of the stories & at least played the ones with unfamiliar mechanics. I’ve also played some of the beginning of KHII on this mode already(I never thought defeating 3 dusks would take so long.)
Does anyone out there, who’s played this mode already, have any advice for me?

I remember clearly my introduction to Secret of Mana. It was toward the end of a summer when we were kids, and my cousin suddenly mentioned a game with a "chipmunk" that was super awesome. I had never heard of it before, but I began a quest to find it. We were able to rent it once and spent the entire weekend playing it. I needed to buy it. Took me forever to find a copy, I even had retro stores helping me. I happened across a boxed copy at a Babbage's and marched it to the counter and paid. Quest complete!
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. A remake will never live up to the original to someone so blinded by love of how it made them feel.
Seeing the chrono trigger rerelease, it makes me grateful we got the 3d remake of secret of mana, even if its not as beautiful as the pixel art. Also I really dont get what you meant from the new music sounding worse. That example you gave still sounded beautiful
the redid music, isnt bad, it just didnt have anywhere near the same tempo or feel as the old music.
That one song example was a huge difference. It turned from "magical fantasy world music" to "cabin next to a forest music"
trust me, theres some tracks they absolutely butcher, like a jumble of noise, like look up the remakes version of potos village on youtube
Most of the remix music is fine but the one that did it for me was The Oracle (Dark Lich's battle theme). They took a creepy sounding song and turned it into more of a rock song.
It doesn't even sound the same
I quite like the remake
King Daniel The Dandy because of your suspicious King Dedede Avatar, I can only read this as sarcastic.
I also did like it. Jirard is just being a fucking dick, as usual.
TheDoos It was bad.
King Daniel The Dandy I like how your DeDeDe avatar is giving the evil eye. Like saying I will kill you for not liking the remake. 😂
DommY CS it seems like the technical issues are the worst thing involved. He comments on the music, but it can be changed back to the original. The VO is a jrpg VO, so... I fully expected it to be terrible. That just doesn't seem that bad.
You're almost at 900k subs! Congrats!
Good thing that the Trials of Mana remake absolutely hit it out of the fucking park
What we've seen so far of the Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) remake already looks miles ahead of this.
Good to hear
and the better remaster trials of mana is on the Switch hell yes
The Crow :Square better not fuck it up or else Charlotte, Angela, and Reize will be very upset with them!!!
trials of mana is also on steam and i love trials of mana. the weird thing that i still have not gotten used to is wene steam has a sale it can be a lot better than sales on ebay or amazon lol.
Yeah! I love your content, and this is another amazing video! Keep up the awesome work! If I could make a simple request, could you please make a “Defend It” for Labo, or a Star Allies video? That would be amazing. If you don’t, I respect you, and hope you keep pumping out more awesome content!
Now that song is in my head 😂!
Solution: play the Android version. It DOES look & sound like an HD remaster.
But I am NOT dumping my SNES cartridge!
PS: Ring Menus are still the most intuitive complex interface I've ever seen
The graphics look adorable and based on the footage shown of the original, they seem like a wonderful translation. I do feel that the colors look washed out a bit, though.
I think both versions of the track sound nice. I don't think the remake one is bad/worse. That said, I understand being disappointed in the changes because if you hadn't told me they were the same song... I don't think I would have been able to tell. At least, not in the moment. It sucks when something you love is changed in a way that it's hard to recognize.
The voice acting sounded serviceable. *shrug* I've had to put up with worse.
I can sympathize with the menu gripes and game crashes frustration.
Its alright mate, you are allowed to be wrong =P
Alvilos Please don't be that guy. This person gave a pretty objective response and their trivial opinion is not "wrong", nor is it "right".
*Alvilos* your entire comment is "wrong"...
guys it was an obvious joke. relax people. I might not agree with this opinion but my response was sooo blatantly joking around.
What I think The Completionist wanted from the game is as follows:
A feeling that the world is alive and real. The stages and areas just have still three-dimensional figures that do nothing. If they were going to go for a realistic look then it will feel off compared to what it really is. Lets take the part in 13:40 for example. The flowers don't flow in the wind nor the trees, and the lilli pads don't flow down the stream. The grass looks so bright which doesn't work well with characters who are also bright and colorful.
Going through school and also learning from big company mistakes, you only need realistic looking objects in scenes where it can be used properly. Secret of mana doesn't need this and could had played off of a more Pokemon esc look. Not entirely but just enough of a more darker tone.
When it comes to music, its also good to note that depending on how you want the player to feel determines what you play during a certain event. The Completionist compares two tracks: one sounds energetic but magical while the other sounds more slow and calm. If I were to be going through a dungeon or battle, I would not play this music. In fact, I might not even play this music even while in a town. The remade music would fit better in a more cut scene like moment.
And the bugs are a issue. No game should release with problems. It hampers the fun of the game.
Ah, the dancing Footloose guy, Neeko the Price-Gouging Cat, and the uncooperative computer-player. I miss those old episodes.
I felt this review so hard in my soul. Well done video. 👏 As a die hard SoM fan, I concur.
never played Secret of mana but I would rather have a Chrono Trigger remake instead.
I mean a true 3D remake the Ds version is literally a port of the Snes version but with the cool exclusive Ps1 anime cutscenes.
OoDarksniper2 and a rack of extra content, not just cutscenes lmao. Regardless, there is already a remaster of chrono trigger just like the other guy said, doesnt matter that its not 3d, its literally what youve already asked for...
We almost got a 3d remaster during the ps2 era go look up chrono resurrection when you get the chance still say square should have scooped the devs rather than slapping them with a c&d
I'll look into it when I have a chance thanks.
PLEASE DONT RUIN CHRONO TRIGGER, Leave it be.
I love how all these great classics get remade.
I'm just waiting for Dragon Ball Tenkaichi 2/3 to be follow suite
Pixel Slayer dude I wished
I'm still waiting for Legend of Dragoon >.>
They all get ruined.
Oddly enough I would rather have a Dragonball Origins 1&2 remake as one game on the Switch or something.
Know what's an unknown gem? Dragon Ball: The Revenge of King Piccolo. It was a Wii 2.5d platformer/beat em up.
Heck yeah!
I have been waiting for this!
"Looks like it came out in 2008" that was generous, tbh. This could have easily passed for a late 90s/early 00s PS1 game.
I've never played either the original or remake, but it just seems like Jirard is too intoxicated on nostalgia and very petty with some of his complaints
SaviroLPs I agree
Yeah, it does feel like that Jirard is way too bitter about his remake. The updated graphics don't look that bad to me. And yeah, I do agree that the menus needed a bit more panache, but otherwise, I don't see why Jirard is so angry about it. Maybe he should have just stuck to the original SNES version.
I agree I actually really dig the art style just wish the textures and polygons didn't look like an early psn game and that the colors popped a bit more. I probably won't play it though due to price and their being better ps4 games for the same price or less also any game that crashes 30 times kinda scares the hell out of me lol.
"I never played either of them"
Okay so your opinions are irrelevant.
This remake has 63 on Metacritic.. an iOS port of the SNES version that has emulation issues and touch controls has an 80.. It's not just Jirard..
Aside from the crashing, I think you nit picked the shit outta this game because nostalgia.
During the first time i ever played through SoM, I played with my brother and friend from across the street, when we realized that we had to grind, we would grind after school and make progression on Saturdays when we could game most of the day, it was awesome.
I've been wait for Secret of Mana (remake) since you announced you'd be redoing the original games completions! This is the video game that got me subscribed!
Do you say it "Mana" or "Mana"?
Mana
I'm wondering what your source on "I say it wrong because I'm weird" is. My source says you're right:
www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mana
On a related note, you complain about how they changed "Undine" from the original (which... Has no voice acting). I think they just looked the word up in the dictionary.
www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/undine
@@ariestar0408 It IS Undine as in the dictionary. Same goes for Mana.
True origins should stay original in every language in my opinion.
Everyone I've seen review this game says the original is better, then goes on to list half a dozen things that make the remake better. I've played both and truly do believe the remake is better.
The remake IS better - nostalgia is what puts the original over the remake. The remake was a directional misstep - but the execution of that direction (choosing to give SOM the AOM treatment) was actually quite fine.
The problem is people heavily overrate the original game, so when they are looking at those mechanics in a modern light, there is a constant lingering desire for more than what was given.
Trials of Mana seems like SE understood that lesson - remaking a console game, even a console game from 25 years ago, is almost always going to have greater expectations than remaking an old game boy game that no one played.
This review reminds me of my feelings when I played Wild Arms: Alter Code F.
I never played secret of mana, but looking at the screenshots that you shown us, I like the pixelated ones more.
Yikes, the visuals in game are in dire need of post processing effects and better lighting effects. Also, a lot of areas he has shown in the video look really flat because the artists have over relied on textures and normal maps rather than actually modeling the environment. That's bad... That's really bad. I think I'll play the original on my SNES instead. With the exception of the Resident Evil Remake, I have not seen a single remake that has better than or even as good as the original.
Sean Pokorny OOT 3D and RE2?
I miss “BUT BEARDMAN”
Sansy boy Man No
I don't, that guy sucked and literally dragged down the show for years. This is much, much better.
Comparing this remake to the Trials of Mana remake is night and day.
Despite the budgetness still shining through in parts, I could still feel the heart and the attention to detail put into the Trials one.
I am German and I’m 100% fine with your pronunciation of Secret of MANA! :D THATS the way I call it since 1994. 😅
The original's music is VASTLY superior. It's not just you, Jirard.
VASTLY?? Nice exaggeration. VASTLY blah blah blah nostalgia
My first playthrough of Secret of Mana was with my best friend, in a snow covered cabin somewhere in a dark Swedish forest. Still one of my favourite games Also Top 2 best soundtracks ever.
I know you won't see this. But I wanted to let the completionist know that I love his channel. I've been veiwing his channel from the start. I know times are tough for everyone. But just knowing that every Friday there's a new video. Brings me peace. Without your videos I'd be lost. Thank you for just being you. You Rock
I have said this multiple times but the new game plus intro is Amazing. I can't stop listening to it
Please do little big planet!!!
Brendan Gotfredson little big planet’s online trophies would be impossible to get them all now
Nofactor that’s true but he doesn’t have to do the online stuff he could just do the pins and other stuff since the trophies are impossible to get
Plus he could probably ask people on social media or something to help him get certain online trophies
I'd be happy to help Jirard with those online Trophies or at the very least give his levels a thumbs up.
Edit: I already completed LBP, but couldn't hurt to go back n help out Jirard.
This review is heavily clouded by nostalgia, more than usual in fact
Well I agree with him as I'm playing through it. I hate these loading screens the most.
Jirard was the cool kid on the playground. So what happened? XD
Great video!
where do you buy the PC version?
The remake looks like it belongs on the 3ds or switch
The remake looks like a bad unity game
z3Carlos the switch is capable of waaaaaaaaaay more than this
z3Carlos Thank god we're getting Octopath Traveler.
z3Carlos FUCK YOU THE SWITCH DOESN’T RUN THIS XBOX LOOKING TRASH!
Even the 3DS has much better looking RPGs, this looks more like something for mobile.
Interesting... this is one of the things I like about you. You aren't afraid to put your opinion out there... I mean, frankly, when you were trying to show off the "problems" with the music and the new graphics, I thought you were crazy... they sounded/looked fine to me. But, even though I've never played the original, I can totally see that you simply have a preference for it and it's artstyle over the new direction. And that is okay in my book, as it is your opinion and you are entitled to it. That said, the crashing issue is somewhat concerning. That needs to be fixed.
Many people in the comments are saying that the problems he mentioned are not really problems but I didn't see anyone mention the crashing. I haven't played the remake so I don't know how bad it actually is but you'd think if a game crashes once every 2 hours, it'd be enough to garner instant hate.
I preordered the game and got the Day 1 downloaded version, and it crashed on me a lot which prolonged my game time! It still felt and played like Secret of Mana to me, and I expected Jirard would see past the nitpicky gripes to give the game a Defend It & New Game Plus treatment.
Zulk RS I don't think you read the comments than many people said the crashes are the problem of the remake.
I found your channel for the first time yesterday through the hollow knight play through. I love it! Great enjoyable content. Good choice of games. Thank you.
I'll fight you, Jirard. My beard can pierce the heavens.
