- This week Jirard dusts off the PSP to go back and experience the game that started it all: Final Fantasy 1. After now almost 30 years, is this influential game worth olde school grinding?

About The Game:
Final Fantasy is a science fiction and fantasy media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, and developed and owned by Square Enix (formerly Square). The franchise centers on a series of fantasy and science fantasy role-playing video games (RPGs). The eponymous first game in the series, published in 1987, was conceived by Sakaguchi as his last-ditch effort in the game industry; the title was a success and spawned sequels.

Final Fantasy I (PSP) 20th Anniversary | The Completionist

I'm pretty sure I never would have completed the 8-form boss. Good googly woogly! I think a lot of us tend to view games as if there were no internet. Like, would this be worth it if the game was all I had? It's a hard situation to imagine these days. Banjo-Kazooie, now that was a completion bonus right there.
I played this game on nes nearly 30 years ago. I was a child. It shaped me.
Honestly, I tried completing the psp version, but after going through the frustrating final bonus dungeon once, after dying 6 times on the way, I decided screw it and just settled with playing through everything.
I got this just after launch, i absolutely loved it. Played through it a dozen times.
"Gee,an epic RPG,we have to collect the four treasures of the elements. I never heard that one before." - ProJared.
.*frowns*wait.....
***** Didn't that start with Final Fantasy in the first place?
***** I don't know why, but the plot sounds similar to Bravely Default. Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that too?
General Snivy Bravely Default is basically just a remake of Final Fantasy 5, everything down to story is almost a complete remake.
***** This is the one that started that
Have to post it, as a shout out:

I sort of disagree that unique classes or the like should be locked behind a completionist bonus. That essentially guarantees that less than 0.1% of the player base will ever touch the content placed there.
+Warp Scanner Well, if the company does it right, it is done as extra content. It's like a new game mode with special things. If you have a fully fleshed out game with the dynamic of those classes working together, you can then add a new set of classes that have a correlation of their own.
This wouldn't be like developers nowadays adding endings as DLC and crap like that. It would be a totally extra feature, and also celebrating the completionist type fans too.
It isn't bad to add a bonus for people that want to do the extra stuff for it, I think. As long as your main game isn't found wanting of content in the process, that is.
Generation 0(~TBC Productions) The problem is, as he points out in the video, that doing this completionist thing for this particular game wasn't fun.
Anything that adds to the game mechanics themselves would behind a wall of unenjoyable grinding that a lot of folks would be on the outside looking in. And once they got it, they'd be too sick of the game to use it anyway.
I get where he is coming from, he feels cheated. But that's because he insists on 100% every game, even games that probably shouldn't be 100%'d unless you are an utter fanatic of it.
Of course, he's based this entire series on being a completionist. So he's sort of trapped himself. And I really do think being so insistent on 100%ing the games he plays is having a toll on him and his enjoyment.
I myself only insist on just completing the main story of any game I start. And even that measly insistence can take a toll on me.
Warp Scanner
Wait, you continue to play a game till the ending if you don't like the game? Weird, I often don't finish games that I like, but don't love.
@@wschippr1 That is literally not even what he said. Make sure you're at least right before you bring the snark
@@BigCowProductions nothing you said was relevant you should read the comment you’re responding to
Crazy this was 6 years ago now, always good to go and rewatch after a few years.
Side note, Red mage is a god damn monster. I cant even count how many times I played the gba version.
On my first play through of the game (GBA version), on my way to fighting Tiamat, the first encounter I got in the boss room, I fought Warmech. I got my shit rekt.
Watching this i realize even more how much i love jrpg s. Nice vid
Man, I still love watching The Completionist as much as I always have. Keep it up, Jirard! It's amazing how you keep pushing forward! Respect.
Final Fantasy I. 1 hour straight. 59 hours of random battles.
Was...was that MatPat as Captain Planet?
...
...Words fail me.
hes got just the right voice.
Yeah, check out The Warp Zone, he hits some pretty high notes

As a Duncan who's been called both "Slam Duncan" and "Duncan Donuts", along with "Dunkaroos", I'm hurt, Jirard.
Do u need a safe space
+Donutgames00 yes
+Duncan Ketcheson r u srs, man up bro
+Donutgames00 no, i'm completely serious and also very sensitive, your harsh words cut deep into my psyche and make me need a safe place even more
my name is juan, people always made fun of my name for sounding like the number 1,i know your pain friend.....
Jirard, these videos are always one of the highlights of my week.
Gee, an epic RPG where you have to collect treasures of the four elements. I've never heard that on before **shows an empty hand as I don't have any Final Fantasy games**
I always loved grinding exp in rpgs. Having to put in a lot of time to level characters made you feel awesome when all the time paid off.
yeah but in this game makes you do a f**k ton of grinding. As opposed to FF games IV and after, THIS one will make you cringe and writhe at the very thought of another random encounter.
Final Fantasy 1 makes your grind for like 2 hours at the max. In fact I got through the PSP version of the game without any level grinding at all, it's a REALLY easy game. I prefer the PS1 version over this because it's actually challenging.
I love it to! It's so satisfying! But it can get redundant and boring. Making the grind fun is hard, but for those who can, good job.
+Regal Pixel king
try the nes and vba one
THOSE are the hardest ones
Sonic the Hedgehog When you say vba, do you mean gba? The gba version of the game is basically the same as the psp version of the game but with worse graphics, sound, and a bit less content. Also I have played through the nes version as well, and it's as hard as the ps1 version of the game but with more glitches and more mistranslations. The reason that I like the ps1 version the most is because it stays loyal to the nes version's difficulty well fixing all the problems that Square couldn't back when the game was first released.
Favorite episode of The C. yet. Glad to watch.
I share the pain. Ouch on this 30 floor loop-hell.
Awesome video man. Im looking forward to the next video
Weird to see the words final fantasy without a numeral next to it
You know I love the FF games FFT being my favorite in the entirety of the series. But I gotta say I have always wanted to see you do a Star Ocean 2 till the ends of time complete a game that for the ps1 defined in my opinion the very best of rpg awesome. And to this day is one of my favorite games of all time. Also for what it's worth I tune in to every episode. Great work man.(and your team/friends)
I really enjoy your videos! keep them up!
love your vids bro keep it up and get better soon!

BraydenFan Much better than seeing PressFartToContinue.
BraydenFan They have bots that mass upvote their comment. After they are at around 15+ votes, the mob mentality does the rest. It's sad really, that they want attention so bad they go out of their way to cheat the system...
ZFFM My fucking lord, no they don't.
I've watched Haedox and Sir Toasty before, they would never use bots.
They watch videos, and comment on them.
BIG. FUCKING. DEAL.
Nice to see the implementation of the Gerg Element :)
I was wondering if you were going to put away with those kinda jokes, because Greg left, but you didn't, you just found a way to keep that awesome element of your awesome show going. Great job on this episode :)
Dang Jirard... You are really hardcore. Completing so many games (a select few a huge challenge I would assume) is an amazing feat. We all really appreciate the work, time, and pain you go through for our entertainment.
I played this game over a course of many years on two cellphones. I still get excited whenever I see that opening screen.
*grumble* FFI was based off of d&d, a western franchise.
Then japan gives the west FF mystic quest, because they think the west is too stupid for JRPGs...
ok ok ok hold up.
Dragon quest I was based off of western RPGs like D&D and Ultima, but japan didn't have many PCs so they had to make it for consoles. So in the west RPGs were for PC gamers, not younger (on average) and simpler console gamers.
That's why we didn't get any of the original 7th Dragons
@@chevgage6210 huh? the USA got dragon quest 1-3 tho
@@rubberwoody They said 7th Dragon, not DragonQuest. lol
@@streetough sorry. Took wrong context
Currently playing the PSP version on my PS Vita. This is the first time I have really gotten into a Final Fantasy game. I played FF7 & 10 in the past but reasons whatever didn’t stay with them and went onto other game’s but now is the time to finally get into this series (been playing games since around 1992 so better late then never) Really enjoying it, just over seven hours into it now.
great video. Thanks for doing this one.
Great Job Jerard. I pray you get well. Always enjoy your videos :D
Finally, a PSP game! even though it's a remake. You definitely need to complete more games from handheld consoles. It was a good review, kudos for the references to Sakaguchi
In regards to random encounters:
I grind the first dungeon of the game until I'm capable of defeating the first boss without having to Heal more than once or twice (9/10 FF games have a boss that counterattacks you in the first dungeon. Mist Guardian FF4, Scorpion Mech FF7, etc so that's the "twice")
and then once I'm done that, I never run from a battle.
This makes it so I never have to grind. I'm always just a couple steps ahead of the first boss due to pacing, and rarely near the end I will have to grind a little bit more just to be able to beat the last boss.
Or, in FF1, just use the PoP, it has great rewards and os an actual challenge to grind on
Amazing video yet again!
Okay, LOVE that MatPat insert! I couldn't believe what I was seeing the first time I saw that Captain Planet theme cover, but it was just... SUBLIME!
I actually like the slow moving text and the credits, because when I spend that many hours playing a FF game, it is sooooo rewarding and relaxing to just sit back and listen to dat music!
I just beat this game, and loved it
This was my first Final Fantasy game and I do not regret it one bit. So many memories.
I truly didn't notice anything wrong with your voice! Great job once again!!
This and Dragon Warrior addicted me for life to RPG's, I always liked to pick 3 Fighters and a Red Mage for my party. What a great era I got to grow up in.
I've been trying to get back into the Completionist since Greg left....
... that's nice
tehn00bdude It feels soulless to me now. It's harder to watch...
Well, he cant please everyone. I still like it because its main focus, being a completionist, is still here. Yeah, there are less jokes, but i see that as more of a change of pace than a downside. If you focused just on the parts Greg added to the show, then you will most likely be caught off guard with how on track jirard stays. If Greg comes back then we can welcome him with open arms. Until then I choose to just sit back and enjoy the hard work the TOVG people put into this free weekly program
who?
I like Greg addition to The Completionist alot, but him being gone doesn't make the series worse imo. I've always been here for Jirard's reviews personally. Still enjoy it just as when Greg was hurr. I do miss the "BUT BEARDMAN" tho lol
Looking back this and Star Ocean was honestly one of my favorite RPG's
Dawn of souls was one of my favorite childhood games, and beating both Final Fantasy 1 and 2 on it were major successes for my child era. I can completely recall beating Chaos with my underleveled characters and feeling so accomplished like it was yesterday.
I love that soon after you get the class upgrades from Bahamut, weak enemies run off in fear
Jirard mentioned Dragon Quest! I'd love to see him play 8 or 9.
Nice video Jirard, still here. Watching.
That One Video Gamer Jirard I like how you are always worried about the way you sound when your sick, when you sound perfectly fine
I'm really late to mention this, but all of the random names you can get for party members are references to other Final Fantasy games. And coincidentally enough, Jirard's entire party here is references to FFVI. Duncan is Sabin's master, Gungho is a friend of Strago, and Duane is half of a couple of teenagers in love from the town of Mobliz.
2:31 That sudden X-III-2 sale drop makes me laugh. Especially when comparing to VII, or the original XIII for that matter.
God I loved this game so much, it was like the first JRPG (pokemon is excluded) I've even beaten. Thank you for reviewing
Of all the places for someone to reference that trolling Saruman video, I didn't expect a Completionist video.
Completionist comment section before Greg left: "Get rid of Greg, he is unfunny and sucks!"
Completionist comment section after Greg left: "Bring back Greg, the show sucks without him!"
Geez people, pic a side already.
People just can't be satisfied, they are always going to complain about something. I miss Greg too but why should either if them work together if they weren't happy?
What happened was that those who hated Greg stopped complaining and are now silent, and those who liked Greg were silent and now aren't.
It's like the Jontron-Game Grumps situation all over again.
Jesus Rodriguez Please don't bring this up. Everyone should, *SHOULD* accept the fact that there is no point to it.
Kritarion Oh don't worry, I'm glad he's gone.
I can feel it... Tales of Symphonia is just around the corner!
+Sozoku Almost!!
Sozoku today
Sozoku acchi kochii
That running gag was one of the best ever.
good video. feel better!
Some day you should play final fantasy 2! Some times it feels like I'm the only one who played it. It's leveling mechanics are pretty different and the way you look at weapons is also unique to the series!
I feel that way about proper Final Fantasy 3. That game was phenomenal from a story telling perspective for its time. Truly the best FF in my opinion.
The leveling system of FF2 is why I consider it the worst of the Final Fantasy main series. Yes, even worse than 13.
But worse than 9?
9 was good though.
And I'm the pope.
May I suggest Yugioh Duelist of the Roses for a review. You'll just have fuuuuuuuuun 100% completing it.
Lord_Derse Oh man fuck you for even suggesting that, leveling up all the leaders to the max rank is a NIGHTMARE. Even just collecting all the cards to begin with is a nightmare.
Now excuse me while I start a new file on duelist of the roses.
Lord_Derse *Starts playing a classical as fuck dueling choir*
Good sir.
PLEASE
So many years, and the Crystal Theme still gets to me (in a good way)
2 years when I moved into my new house I played halfway through this game on PSP and then put it down... after watching this video for the fourth time I think I'm ready to pick it back up again and grind at the hall of giants once more. Thank you, Jirard!
3:44 Is this some old clip found in the dark stretches of the Internet never to be found?
And WHY IS MATPAT CAPTAIN PLANET!?
Are you man enough to Complete Final Fantasy IX?
You know you want that Excalibur II!
This... may be a bit late, but if you want to get the Excalibur 2, you will skip a LOT of side quests.
TetraMaster47 this... may also be a bit late, but this actually isn't true.
There have been runs of FFIX that finished all side quests (including that ridiculous "go trigger a scene in the final dungeon and then head back to lindblum every time a new cutscene happens oe boss is fought for a total of 18 times" nero quest line) and picked up all items and still had time to pick up the Excalibur II.
Alternatively, just have the game running for two real-life years so the timer overflows and you have a window of a couple hours to get it again.
It really would be a challenge to complete that!
@HicksZ34 I'm going to be honest, I had no idea people would ever reply to this. I don't even remember what was going on in my head at the time. I do remember, however, that I hadn't thought of that at the time. Thanks, I guess?
I am impressed you managed to complete this game.
This weeks game was really cool it was a fun look at this 20th Anniversary of Final Fantasy I
Completionist ! We wanna see you complete Final Fantasy XII !
I hope you can review all the other Final Fantasies.
this was my first FF game and one of my first traditional RPG's and i still love the franchise
Great review Jirard. I appreciate how much respect you have for the history of the series and its roots. I'm personally not a huge RPG fan, but I do enjoy playing one from time to time, and I plan to play through all the Final Fantasies.
I started with VII after I'd heard how amazing it is and I was underwhelmed (all the hype ruined it for me and made me expect more than I got) although I did beat it, started VIII and stopped when the story started getting really confusing, and started X but stopped as soon as I was able to play blitzball as much as I wanted (sank all my time into that and then lost interest in the main game). After that I decided I wanted to play all the games in the series in order so I could see how it grew with each entry, and I believed that would help me appreciate the later games more and make me want to finish them when I catch up to them. I have I - IX on the Playstation (except III on the DS since it wasn't given a PS remake for no apparent reason), as well as X, X-2, and XII.
At this point I've played through I - III (just finished III tonight actually!) and I'm really enjoying them so far. I love seeing the series grow as they implement new elements and gameplay features, as well as writing more involved stories with each successive game. I'm excited to experience the more popular entries like VI and IX. Next up: Final Fantasy IV!
My kingdom for Persona 3 or 4.
Also no mention of the Hall Of Giants/Gigas, easy grinding area early on.
Please do all the main final fantasy titles
I know this comment is super old but it's so wild for someone to watch a review that says this game took way too long to complete, and the response is "do 14 more of them"
@@OrangeShanker lol right? But seriously, he should do Final Fantasy 14... 😝
I don’t think you know how long it takes to complete ONE Final Fantasy game, let alone 14 more, 16 if you include sequels and take out X which he’s already done a video on.
Don't forget, If he completes ff6, he's gonna complete dkc2 next, and the series will end.
@@LucarioBlade I think I his X video he said he would do 1 a year
you do great job gerald very good
Great vid man. New subscriber here.
As a longtime FF fan, every time Jirard calls the Crystals "Orbs" I died a little inside.
Clearly not longtime enough to have played the original NES Final Fantasy 😬
They were orbss in the OG
I completed this over and again with 4 of every type. Including white mages.
Interesting
I hope they bring classes back one day, I really like the replayability of early final fantasy’s and fire emblems(haven’t played past path of radiance) where you could main different types of character
@@WuvPain Check out SE's Bravely Default series.
No game has ever done classes like FF1 did, a short, fast paced RPG where you got to commit to your decisions.
Wow. This is the first Completionist video that has made me laugh several times since...
I remember buying this remake when I was in college in '08 and it definitely made the two hours of commuting on buses per day easier. I never went so far as to complete it, I think I only finished two of the new dungeons. I had no idea Final Fantasy IX (my personal favourite of the series) sold so few copies! Makes sense to me though, most times when people find out that it's my favourite, I'm met with pointed questions instead of mutual appreciation.
Thanks for this entire series of videos so far. I started on episode 100 a few days ago and plan to go back to #1 once I'm up to date.
"I'm gonna try to get some rest this week."

I swear to god, these old videos are so good, they have everything the new one's lack, like...

Your awesome Bro! Get better man!!
4:15 that smooth transition to star fox just really cracked me up lol
Have you ever thought of doing the Megaman ZX series? I think you would love it.
YEAH!!! DO it JIRARD!!!
Please review the original 2 Golden Sun games. :)pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaase.
Matthew the Earth Adept I'm all for this. The Golden Sun games are some of my favorite games of all time. The ability to carry stuff over to an extent was also very interesting. I actually built a DnD campaign based off of that series.
Wow that must have taken a lot of effort.
Yeah, it certainly did. All of my players love it though, so that certainly made it worth the effort.
It seems this comment is getting a lot of thumbs up will you review these games Mr.Jirard?
Wtninja hey man, that's cool that you made a dnd campaign for Dnd. What version did you base it around? Do you still have your base classes? It would be interesting to try it out.
my bros and i got this game on the gb and it was still the most fun and the most amazing expereance i had in an rpg discovering what the game had to offer was amazing and the extra long dungans were rilly fun for me and my brothers being as yong as we were all and all what this rambal of a porly spelt thing is trying to say that i love this first Final Fantasy and thank you the completionist for reinspiering that love
Omg that victory theme I'm so pumped
They also had to change the name as another RPG (in the UK) was all ready called Fighting Fantasy.
My favorite Final Fantasy experience was the sixth(or third for some people), which luckily, was the same game that introduced me to the series, but if it were up to me to introduce people to the entire series, I say they should start with the seventh, as a test of skill and a formal introduction to it all.
Willie touset 7 is too different from almost all others. Its not a good intro. 6 is usually the best intro, then they can choose any of the 5 before or they can play 8,9 or 10. Depending on which way they wanna go lvling and combat. 7 has similar lvling and combat, but graphics are too different to then go back to pixels. 6 allows that transition to older graphics more tolerable. 3D to 2D pixels will make most everyone quit. 7 is best after playing 6 and a few others to get a feel for final fantasy in general. Then they can fully enjoy the amazing story and hate on 8 and 9 for having crappy stories. And hate on 10 for being too convoluted and taking way too long to develop any sort of story progression.
Love you!!!
Mark is back editing again? Cool!
Do a shin megami tensei game. Not persona
94unclechuck Don't. The compendium is a ass to finish. Also, he must finish Law, Chaos and Natural. If he plays Nocturne, YHWH help him.
94unclechuck looks at nocturne (smirks) k.o.ed without getting a turn
94unclechuck Heck yeah! He should complete one of the Devil Survivor Saga or the SMTIV! :D
94unclechuck say please
94unclechuck why not nocturne
Out of all the Final Fantasy games, this is by far my favourite
Yoooo. I am new to your channel I have to say you are one of the greatest you tubers I've ever watched. You have amazing /hilarious videos keep going you have inspired me to become a completionist and I'm a 26 year old gamer that plays through the story and boob move on but you have really inspired me to take a look at why I play games.
Now I have a challenge for you. ... Can you complete the game that cannot be completed? ...... Minecraft. ... Just a challenge I'm sure you have heard that one before but thank you and you have a lifetime fan.
Hey guys, really enjoyed the video. Great work! Have you guys considered doing completionist episodes for other square enix games like final fantasy tactics, or tactics ogre? They both have psp releases, so maybe check that out when you can :) really live your channel btw. Keep it up!
In all honesty, I love this game. The bonus dungeons are a pain though. Still, for me, this game is worthy of starting the series with.
3:41 LMAO :)
I think I went though that final extra dungeon 3-4 times before I had enough. I tip my hat to you Sir!
Great review! I've always heard about Final Fantasy, but I've never tried any of the games. I think I should though.
I would love for this to get a ps4 re-release

Wtf was that Mattpatt dressed as captain planet? xD
Another great video. No stupid skit or bullshit voice overs.
Great review I never played Final Fantasy I've played all of its sequel
I grew up n the dawn of souls version and I would normally play 1 over 2 since it was bigger, better made and more fun over all.
seriously fuck the 'level' up system in 2 sucks.

Hearing the Final Fantasy theme at the credits brought a tear to my eye. It may be a small thing, but the series isn't the same without that tune.
