When it comes to grinders, I've always been a Makita man. But maybe this new Dewalt will change my mind. We'll teardown this grinder and have a close look at the build quality. This is a very in-depth review and test so I broke the vid into two parts. I'll post part B next Sunday.
Enjoy teardowns? Me too, but they get pricey. Please consider throwing a few bucks into the hat and help me make these vids.

You do such a good job of explaining pumps Hydraulics Motors even going into specifics about how things work down to the bearings that I have literally taken what I learned from your videos and apply them in my own job. I feel confident about taking things apart at work were before I was worried I couldn't get them back together again. You've translated a lot of industrial jargon that we all pretend to know what they are but are too embarrassed to raise our hand to ask what the hell they really talking about. I used to work for a specialty grease lubricant company where we did a good deal of work with design for life power tools, etc, developing tailor-made formulations....applications covered just about everything under the sun. Our technical director at the time now has his own lab and is the best in the business. If you are interested in some analysis on the lubricant chemistry, let me know and I can get some testing done for you...at least I can run it up the flag pole. The grease is normally far down on the food-chain in terms of engineering, so a thorough analysis of the base fluid, additive package, etc. can be a huge indicator of the longevity, or lack thereof (preaching to the choir), your viewers can expect from a tool. The first thing I was always asking about when talking to design engineers was what their warranty issues were. Great vids by the way. Keep it up. The grease in the Dewalt grinder has me very curious even a year and a half after you made this video. The lack of lube on gears is a disaster.

    • @afrog2666

Dead Reckoning is just "rough estimation" of position, it`s a nautical term, you use known values to calculate/estimate position by using say landmarks, time and direction away a certain island etc.
The OG navigators were smart AF when it came to that stuff, not to mention the dudes who made maps etc back then.

  • @bikingmnviking3801
    @bikingmnviking3801 8 лет назад +12

No grease on the gears because of the positioning. When they assemble it they are looking for speed so they use a ceiling hung air grease gun like we had in the shop. They squirt some in the case and install clean gears and out the door it goes. They don't expect a schmoo like you to be discombobulating it before it gets used ... in other words once it starts to get used the heat and gravity will bring the grease in contact with the wear surfaces. This may even be on purpose to let the metal have a short wear-in period & the steel could (quite a stretch but a decent thought) even be hardened & impregnated by the hot grease hitting it later. They're DeWalt and with their custom grease blend this makes some plausible sense or like I first said it could just be an EZ manufacturing process. Excellent sticktuitiveness AveMan.
8:41 "That's a nice looking gear" -- there is no hope for us. No hope! Hide the sheep!
oh god, my belly is laughing like a bowlful of jelly, thanks....
at just before 10ish... I thought that roughness in your scope looked familiar to when I have oil hardened steel tools or knives. sandblasting would be an excellent way to clean away excess burr material that can get into grease and bearings and shorten the life of the tool. Apples n oranges like you said. Dewalt is american engineered isn't it?
I don't use these grinders, too small for us woodworkers and when I weld or need to cut lots of metal I prefer the depth of cut advanatge of circular saw and its 7 inch blade.
Shouldn't boggle your mind about no keyway because at that point it is a high rpm motor with relatively low torque until it passes the hypoid gear and is reduced.
I think the rubber bushing at the skateboard bearing end of the motor is to keep some constant friction against the bearing thus eliminating the possibility of the gear rotating and burning its way out of the case (maybe they added this from an earlier prototyped model) and also it is yet another layer of dust/dirt protection against the bearing. It is these little micro differences that make the difference between a tool that fails soon and one that fails later. And remember this tool is preferred by metalworkers and also very often installers of ceramic tile & stonework... the latter two being so abrasive and different that they even have their own set of blades (though my metal cutting abrasive blade works on stone and vice versa... might be some wear difference but I can't imagine a whole lot unless it is just another marketing gimmick because I buy my metal cutting blades by the 10pk. When I go to town I wear them out pretty fast. )
22:59 the plastic is not there so much for the sealed bearing as it is vice versa...I've rebuilt/repaired a lot of electric motors from vacuum cleaners to jet pumps and what happens here is this scenario:
23:30 The grease from the bearing (and the bearing might not fail but the seal does!) gets on the copper commutator and then you get a bad burning smell the housewife normally doesn't prefer near her couch & eventually the electrical connection to the copper commutator weakens the whole motor performance. Add a smidge of household dust and/or wood dust (yeah, I'm a woodworker, deal with it! ) and you have a very quick recipe for a failure unless it is discontinued use and some one like me gets at it. I usually clean them with solvent and prefer 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to resurface the commutator and then the whole thing works better than brand new. ( and why I can afford to have like 6 vacuums laying around. People throw out shit for the lameness of reasons and if it is a good brand or expensive unit it is worth my time (and curiousity like you don't get that) to discombobulate the thing and bob's my uncle.)
Obviously the spade lug on the brush is for rebuilding speed. Most of the brushes have a pole within them. So if the user doesn't destroy the commutator, simply pop that cover and the commutator could be resurfaced and then a new brush installed and you are back in business.
What would confirm that even more is either to run the tool til the brush fails or get a set of brushes and cut it in half and see if they now employ a non-destructive wear indicator. They used to be iron poles which if not stopped almost immediately will destroy the commutator by ripping it to shreds.
I would hope by now they have done more like disc brakes where that piece of sheet steel rubs and makes a godawful sound BEFORE the user gets to the brake pads' rivets and destroys the rotor thus needing a new rotor. Though most these days dont last anyway because they're thin, often crossdrilled(warp) because it obviously just makes better engineering sense to have something fail to a more repairable state. (a lesser version of fail-safe which we were taught in electronics college by our military veteran professors who knew lives can be on the line in their designs.)
BTW I have no engineering experience but I do work on shit. In real life. With my hands & I killed/broke one big bertha by pounding on it while I replaced the whole rear suspension of my ford taurus & compressed the mcpherson strut springs by hand myself. If you ever attempt a pair of those you'll see its about 3 times the muscle needed than to use your 100 ton punch. I now bought a pipe vise and I really should buy an old fashioned post vise like blacksmiths use (love Roy Underhill's show The Woodwrights shop.. watch it every Saturday! He is one of the ONLY woodworkers to be allowed to work on Thomas Jefferson's Thames House BTW. Some of us refer to him as 'Saint' Roy because with a woodworking tool in his hand he can do no wrong. You're pretty close to being a saint in the metal/electrical engineering depts. Excellent quality vids. YT has now almost totally replaced my TV watching BTW.) and I really passionately love to ramble about all this shit. Bob's my Uncle!

I know this video is old, but I just wanted to say that we use the dewalt 4" grinders at my job for production work. I have enough broken ones for spare parts that I have started up a little tool hospital for them. Even the 4" version has the nice metal gears in the right angle head. Usually damage to the cord is what kills them, followed by the brushes being worn down to the spring, which will score the rotor. Replace the brushes, blow some air through to spin the rotor and polish with scotchbrite, and you're in business. I've only ever had one that failed catastrophically. It shorted across the copper coils on the rotor, and you could see a bright arc as it rapidly welded itself together. We got a fein 4" grinder in the other day and I opened it up. Nicer electric components over all: heavier gage wire everywhere, higher class bearings, etc. Better design for maintenance labeled switch terminals, simplified cable routing (cable routing inside the 4" dewalt is a nightmare), easier access for tools. The nicer bearings make it run much more smoothly than the dewalt which is important for production work. Even so, I still prefer the ole dewalts, as I like the flappy paddle on/off switch dealie, and I don't like a complicated system to get discs on and off. On the dewalt one, I just turn the stacked disk and washer thing onto the shaft by hand, and that's enough. The fein has 2 washer things (the back one always falls off), and the button to lock the shaft is in a dumb place.

I bought a DeWalt 4.5 inch grinder several years ago, brought it home and put it to use, after 5 minutes it was so hot I couldn't hold on to it. I took the cap off over the gears, NO grease on the gears, a little dab of grease on the inside of the cap...but not anywhere near the gears. Took it back and exchanged it for a new one. When I got it home took the cap off the gears....same thing a little dab of grease on the underside of the cap and not on the gears. I took a screwdriver and spread the grease on the gears. I am still using the grinder still works good. I used it hard too, ran a welding shop. Good review, excellent videos.

I purchased this for the purpose of cutting patio stones . I have a 600 sq ft area i had to cover with intricate cuts that i had to cut through the stones from both sides due to the 1 3/4 in depth with the 5 in diamond blade it would do before it would bottom out on the housing. The stones are 2 in thick.I watched this teardown before the purchase. i noticed as you did the lack of dispersion of lube so as you said mabey the heat will dissapate the lube. So i ran it with no load pointed down for 20 min and monitored it with a IR thermometer. At the start temp climbed to 170 f then dropped to 150 f at the business end then let it cool down over night. After two more cycles had the temp down to 120f . lube dispersion or gear lap in or combo who knows. I ran thing roughly 2 hrs with it sucking in cement dust and it still chooches. Felt bad for it so i blew it out with compressed air. Neighbours did not like the desert storm. Anyways there she sits on the shelf a necessity for the job at hand but an other tool i had an excuse to buy.

22:40 the air flows from back to front (just look, there's a turbine behind the pinion!), so they're actually protecting the commutator from abrassive/conductive particles flying straight in at the brush to burr contact level. And the elastomeric bushing around the bearing is just to reduce kicks and vibration, although when it wears out and the rotor touches the stator....

High quality stator and rotor with sufficient diameter copper wire.
And above all epoxy coating so that the wires do not rub against each other.
Hopefully this is not done because the electrical windings are loose and sloppy applied.
The gear transmission is bad in my eyes.
The tooth surface is too rough and dry because the lubrication is thrown off by the centrifugal force.

The reason why dewalt didnt use keyway is because it gives the toothwheel some slip when your cutting disk gets stuck instead ripping it apart. Funny thing is... Most Bosch and metabo tools that have that keyway either pop their gears or twist the motor shaft in half.Hitachi, Dewalt and Makita are two of the very few that actually hold up after years of abuse. Dont even tell me about bosch tools...

So it seems like they really built the shit out of the rotor and field, then cut costs on other parts such as the brush holders. As of this video I'm thinking I like the Makita better. I had a Dewalt re-saw with the quick release. Every time you'd bind it, which was all the time, the blade would release on it's own. I finally fixed it by grabbing it by the plug and whipping the saw on the ground a few times until it came apart. I don't need to change a blade in ten seconds, but if I have a quick release I want to release it myself.
I absolutely love these videos. I'd love for you to test everything like this. I think manufacturers ought to send you free stuff to tear down if they're confident in the product. I've shared the video on Facebook.

I am a bit of a expert on the older dewalt grinders.the weak part was the wires to the stator.they would burn off.the brush holder plugged into the stator.I would just solder them together. also the switches, brushes, and mcords needed replaced often .the grear box and armature were almost indestructible. the variable speed module or soft start module on the newer ones are junk.they have solid state components in them and they blow out easily.I just remove them and wire around them.

I worked for where the top bearing production factories in the world, doesn't mean we're the best bearing production just means that we produce the most and we have the most bought... Our bearings seem to be mainly for CAT, GM, Ford, etc. It generally seems to be that we only make bearings that are larger. We make bearings nicknamed bracelet bearings; I've never seen such a thin bearing. We also make big beefy ones that can weigh a couple kilos. Crazy cool, I love learning about the world.

You DO have the best power tool reviews that I have seen - and I been watching RUclips for 30 years! :) If you had an electron microscope and a gas chromatography machine I bet they would be even more in-depth. The gear had me wondering if it was actually cast with just the bearing surfaces machined then hardened. I can't see the need to blast a machined gear unless they are relying on the pits for retaining some lube. Like you, I have some graphite blocks that need a carbide or diamond blade to cut because it's so abrasive. Motor brushes use a finer clay binder more akin to a hard pencil lead. As for keying the gear, I think it's done so they don't have to precisely locate it on the shaft. I would think that the DeWalt version would be smoother since the pinion is rigidly located and not oscillating in and out of the teeth and bouncing against the key.
Guess I'll just have to wait for Part Duo to find out.
    Love your channel.

We use this model of Dewalt where I work. I can say from real word experience the cord is the weakest part of the unit. I would say I replace the cord 2 - 3 times before the brushes need replacing. The gearbox has failed on a few of the units(after many years of service) but watching the guys use these things I attribute this type of failure to pushing arbor lock pin while the grinder is still spinning(the wheel nut comes off effortlessly) I have yet to see a gear failure not caused by bits of the arbor lock.

I work as a welder/fabricator for a world leading manufacturer. My company bought hundreds of Dewalt angle girders, that my area used them mainly for back-grinding. We was burning one up every week. It was back to American Made pneumatics.

I'd also happily watch another 30 minute teardown of the same tool after it's been used and abused for some arbitrary period.
