Today was a somber day for many, as we remember the legacy of the MD-80. The MD-80 which I flew on over at least a hundred times in my life time with communting to see family, has left its mark on me. The MD80 IS the only reason that I am in flight school right now becuaee when I was 9 years old sitting in the cockpit of an MD80 I made a promise to myself that I would fly this plane one day. As I am working on my commercial rating it appears I have run out of time....I will never have the chance to fly this bird, but I will attribute my pilot career to this plane. Thank u MD80, for inspiring the young child that I was to pursue dreams. See you in the skies old friend!

I really loved that speech at the end. It really puts it all into perspective, you are one guy on one flight on one trip a plane makes, that same planes carries 10,50, maybe even 400 people depending on the type, making multiple flights a day for 20-30 years, thats hundreds of thousands, even millions of people, on ONE aircraft. I think it truly brings together what being an aviation enthusiast is all about.

Great video as always. My dad recently retired from Delta on the 757/767 but spent many years in both seats of the MD-88. I tagged along with him on countless trips over the summers in the mid 90s. Flying today is more comfortable than it’s ever been but the aircraft of that era will always be extra special to me. I get that the Mad Dog is at the end of its useful life, but still bittersweet indeed.

I feel like a part of my childhood has been placed on the scrap heap. I know all good things must come to an end, but I seriously wish sometimes that all these Super 80's could go to museums instead of getting broken up. Rest in Peace Mad Dog, you will not be forgotten.

My father started his aerospace career at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica and he worked on many aircraft in Central America. He then immigrated to the United States of America where his dream was to work for McDonnell Douglas company. He was able to live out his dream and continue to work and build many aircraft in his lifetime, but this was his favorite - The MD 80 series jets built by McDonnell Douglas. The series had MD 80, 81, 82, 83, and 90 that he built and inspected throughout his aerospace career while with McDonnell Douglas Company and even when it merged with The Boeing Company. His employee stamp and code are on the grand majority of these and he worked so diligently to support my Mom and I. He retired in 2001 and I can remember so many times I flew this aircraft for work and pleasure. It was such a beautiful, safe and unique airplane that is a part of aviation history now as they will retire these wonderful jets. Thank you for so many years of enjoyment "Mad Dog" Super 80! To the engineers, builders, to all the pilots, crew, and maintenance staff, thank you for all your work and dedication!

I think American Airlines thought back in the early 2000's about re-engining the planes with a modern engine like the Pratt & Whitney PW6024. Had that happened, it's likely the MD-80 would still be in service with American until the 2020's.

One of American's Super 80 aircraft was donated to Tulsa Tech over here at Richard L. Jones for Riverside's (excellent) maintenance technician program taught under aviation generals. I too love the bare metal livery, but that's a look best kept to an era of aircraft construction that just can't carry on with today's processes. Let's continue honoring the past while having an equal appreciation for great strides being made in contemporary aviation.

I have probably flown on an MD-80 over 200 times and it was one of my favorite airplanes. No frills but it got the job done. The front 3rd of the plane including first class was probably the quietest plane I have ever flown on. The 2-3 configuration made for less middle seats. I don't remember very many mechanical delays......even when the planes started to get older. Thank you MD-80 for all the memories !!!

Captain said ATC was delaying the flight some time due to congestion forecast in Chicago. Maybe half an hour later we could tak-off and I enjoyed a marvellous flight. Shortly after I sat down on my economy class seat a stewardess came to me and offered me a first class seat. I gladly accepted and enjoyed the offered the start of the flight cockteil (Bloody Mary) She said they noticed I was travelling on airline employee reduction faire (ID90) and was working for Swissair at this time. I will never forget that gesture and hospitality from whoever decided that upgrade.

Nice video. I was actually on the MD-80 that pushed out to ORD from C2. I am a 31 year AA ramp employee and they have used my photos in the past, such as the S80 shot taking off to announce the retirement. I got a call two days before the flight and they offered me a seat. How lucky. It was a great flight. One of the 2 captains flying that day talked about having to learn French on his new aircraft! All the passengers signed 2 safety cards to be taken to the C.R. Smith Museum. All of the overhead bins and walls were written on by the passengers leaving their final good byes and maybe a memory. I am lucky to have been a part of that planes legacy below the wing for most of my days and the last revenue trip put of DFW.

I have flown many trips on MD-80s both with American and Delta since they came out in the 80s. A lot of people don't like them because they lack the features of newer aircraft. However I really liked the 2-3 or 3-2 seating arrangement, which meant there was less chance of the dreaded middle seat. Hearing those Pratt and Whitney engines spool up during take-off was always music to my ears. However they were very loud in the rear cabin. I will miss seeing them.

I wanted to share this with you: as a former American employee seeing those mad dogs retire. The first time I met an aircraft it was the md-80. I met 80’s on a daily basis and working around them felt like there was something special about them. Even though they were loud in takeoff to those on the ground that’s what made them unique. I currently live a few miles from where one md-80 went and every time I drive by her I wish to see her reach for the sky one last time. The day is sadly fast approaching when those beautiful aircraft won’t grace the skies above the states anymore.

Oh man I wish I'd known about that day! My family has a history with American Airlines, My mom worked for American for 35 years she was instrumental in welcoming the new MD-80 to come to Sacramento as a flight operation agent. Me and my brother worked as ramp agents loading and unloading, towing and marshaling in the MD-80 in 1987 I even got a taxi license to taxi the MD-80 from parking apron to the gate. What memories! Thank you for this video such bittersweet memories!

I am almost in tears. . . I have flown with American Airlines so much that I've probably been on at least a good portion of their S80 fleet, and I have some really strong memories with them. Memories of visiting my family, watching a sunrise/sunset from above the clouds, flying over pristine mountain ranges, and last but not least, a white-knuckled landing at Sea-Tac Airport with 60mph winds! But, like all good things, the Super 80 must come to an end. . .

I had the pleasure flying the mad dog this past April from Cleveland, Ohio to Dallas, Texas and bag. I even had a chance after my flight for a short interview with the pilots and their own thoughts of the retirement. They really enjoyed the flying of this aircraft and the characteristics it gives the pilots, you can feel the aviation when you fly this aircraft. Very sad for me to see the mad dog gone, it was a big icon for American Airlines, the silver with the red and blue colors. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

My first flight was on a DC-9 back in 1982. I was 3. I'll miss these jets. My last DC-9 flight was in 2011. The MD-80s are great and truly, they may not be loud from inside but MAN, if you ever spent time at Dockweiler Beach at the end of LAX, they were louder than 747s on takeoff roll. Speaking of which, Jeb, as an AvNerd you are really doing yourself a disservice if you haven't gone to the In'N'Out burger at S. Sepulveda and W. 92nd street right at the northeast end of LAX's 24L and 24R, there's a little park just south of the In'N'Out where you can eat your food and watch the heavies come in, sometimes once every 2 to 5 minutes! Then, simply drive west on Westchester Pkwy, make a right at the T, quick left onto Waterview St. and another Left on to Vista Del Mar. first and second parking lot on the right is Dockweiler State Beach. You can sit there, have a bonfire and watch the heavies roar overhead while the sun slips into the Pacific. It will be one of the best Av days possible. I can possibly hook you up with the guys at MotoArt studios, just south of LAX. Hit me up!

Was on that very Mad Dog back in March, I took a later flight just to get one more ride. The fact that the last AA flight was on a TWA aircraft makes it even more special.

I live right under a common flight path into Minneapolis. These Maddogs would always fly over me. Mostly the MD-90, and you could easily tell just by how loud the engines were compared to the other planes that flew over, and I'd immediately say to myself; "Ope, that's another MD-90!" They were the best sight to see. Sadly, it's been a while since I've flown the 80 and 90. Back in 2017 I flew the MD-90 to Atlanta, and that was the last time I was on any Maddog. About half a year ago, they stopped coming to Minneapolis, only the American MD-80's occasionally came, even a World Atlantic came here once, but not anymore. I miss looking up and always seeing an MD-90 fly over. It would always be St. Louis or Atlanta from the south, but they came from literally everywhere. I will never forget the fun memories I'd have with those planes, and it's so sad to see them go. Now I've got the MD-95's (717) flying over me, and those beauties will be gone soon as well. Sometimes a CRJ-900 would fly over, and at first I'd see it as an MD-90, and I'd get all excided that one is finally coming back, until I realize that it is indeed, a CRJ-900. It was cool that you got to fly on this one Jeb, and I'll never forget those fun memories ;)

Guys, had the 'pleasure' to fly the MD80 series numerous times as Austrian Airlines back in the 80ties had a MD80 fleet only - before they slowly introduced Airbus long-haul and short-haul birds. So I did my very first flights as a teen on them and later earned my first frequent traveller status on the MD80 family. I need to admit I never liked them a lot - but looking at your video Jeb, it brings back long gone memories! So, finally even I - who was so happy back in the early 2000 when my standard business routes got flipped to the A320 - turn a bit melancholic seeing the workhorse of so many airlines go into retirement but for sure not into oblivion! Fare well MD80 😥

My first Super 80 experience was in June of 1988. I was 14 years old and traveling with my two brothers to meet our parents in Santa Barbara. We arrived in DFW from LGA on an American Airlines DC10. We then boarded the Super 80 flight which made a stop in Bakersfield before continuing on to Santa Barbara. Years later, I became an AAdvantage elite member and logged hundreds of flights on the Mad Dog as I connected through ORD and DFW to various business destinations across the USA.

I loved watching this. Years before this vid was made I flew on an MD80. The plane was not full, so I moved back to one of the seats between the rear engines. (None of the seats back there were occupied.) What I will always remember is that on the plane's descent the engines were adjusting and the change in vibration was noticeable. I felt incredibly relaxed, almost in a state of bliss. It had to have been the decrease in pitch (sound frequency) and its effect on me physically. To this day I have not been on a more pleasant flight.

Used to fly on these all the time when visiting my folks via DFW. Over the years, suffered two engine failures climbing out of DFW. If you want quiet, an MD-80 gliding while the pilots are trying to diagnose the problem, that’s quiet.
Both times I was sitting mid cabin and the noise when the engine failed was massive. I can only imagine how scary it must have been for the folks sitting with the engine view.
