The Death of Johannesburg

- So sad to see the collapse of this once wonderful City, Johannesburg. I personally witnessed much of the degradation as I worked there for five years. Here I've put it all together thanks to deathofjohannesburg.blogspot.com
Wow, I can't believe it! I lived in Hillbrow from 1972-77. I worked at the Barclay's Bank in the Highpoint Building and frequented the Fontana in the basement, and the Paradise Cafe. I walked up and down Hillbrow for years, and remember passing the Chelsea Hotel a hundred times. I have lovely pictures of Jobert Park, and I do remember that impala fountain. My best friend lived in Yeoville. I recognize these streets and businesses. It looks like a thousand years and a few nuclear wars later.
You mentioned the Chelsea Hotel. In this video in addition to showing the Chelsea Hotel, they also show the Mark, the Sands, and the Harrison Reef. They've all been abandoned now, but when they were in business they were not budget or mid-range hotels. They were high-end luxury hotels.
I remember Jo'Burg in the 70s. My mother was from there, and we used to go there every few years to visit the relatives. I loved it. The residential areas had neat, tidy well-kept houses, and beautiful tree-lined streets. The downtown area was so nice, I remember going downtown with my grandma to go shopping. Now all those nice stores and restaurants are gone. Shame.
And all the thanks to FW Dear Klerk and his men
Traitor
My God, this is vuil/disgusting! I'm from Cape Town but I have seen pictures of this place in the 1970's. The degradation is unbelievable! Cape Town has degenerated but not at this pace! However, the degradation here will eventually reach those standards just like all other South African cities.
Cape Town is still much nicer than Jo'Burg, but it's not what it used to be.
remember being in Joburg one weekend in 1991. Went to watch Costner's "Dances with Wolves" in Hillbrow. Even then the centre was becoming dangerous and you definetly didnt want to walk around alone. Can't imagine how shit it must be now.
Such a beautiful city when I came there on holiday in the 70's when I was 14 - so so sad to see such beauty ravaged and destroyed by savages :-(. What is wrong with you people ?
My mother was from Johannesburg. I remember being there as a child back in the 70's. It was beautiful then. I never imagined it would be like it is now. Last time I went to South Africa in 2008 even black people were telling me it was better under apatheid!
Keep dreaming, Tex. Keep dreaming. Especially when getting the real opinion of aboriginals. If that was said it's probably because you held a weapon and asked for their passbook.
@@bcs2k1 I never held a weapon to anyone, you're being ridiculous. I'm not suggesting that South Africa was perfect under Apartheid, but the country was run better. There were plenty of jobs and the crime rate was far lower.
It's appalling. Why can't this government do something?
It used to be so beautiful in the late 80s.I lived at the Metropolitan in Berea and worked in Eloff street.Everything was clean and immaculate. It goes to show that this government is incapable of running this country.
this is sad i am south african and black we destroyed this country
PETER .ONLY BLACKS DESTROYED EVERYTHING NOT WHITE BUILDING UP AND RULE WITH HARD WORK..
Hard work = Put a gun to someone's head, steal other people's belongings, put a gun to someone's head, divide people, put a gun to someone's head, steal their belongings, put a gun to someone's head , pit people against each other, put a gun to someone's head, force them to work for almost nothing, get rich...and tell the world you succeeded by working hard.
You are hilarious Ricardo. Trying "building up" in any soil on your own merits versus threats and cheating others. Tell me where it has ever occurred.
peter radebe not you. You weren't even there!😂
@@bcs2k1 amen!
The white man is to blame for this catastrophe had he worked with the black community and integrated this country would be great like Australia and New Zealand.
We respect everyone from all parts of the world.
I lived in SA when it was in the grips of apartheid...shocking thing to see.
Corruption, greed amongst the native population is also a huge problem.
I am sorry to see Hillbrow looking like this as i recall it well.
No hope for this country unless the younger generation worked together..
I cannot see that happening either..
Australia-New Zealand..
this looks just like Detroit.
planned obsolescence..... maybe?
In spite of the improvements it will never be restored to it's former glory. The ANC government shouldn't have let it go anyway, now our taxes must pay for their f@kup! We use to walk through Hillbrow and town at 4am in the morning with no worries of crime...
My mother was from Jo'Burg. I live in the states, and used to go to South Africa during my childhood to visit the relatives. I remember how nice it was.
If you live in the States now, there are many "Hillbrow's" coming to America after this economic collapse which is on its way to the USA
Agree with every word - they just don't have the same intelligence or standards. See Zimbabwe as well
See where affirmative action leads folks?
My mother was from Jo'Burg, in fact she was from Yeoville. She grew up in a pretty gingerbread style house on Dunbar St. I remember going to Jo'Burg as a child back in the 1970s. I remember going downtown with my grandma to go shopping on Bree St. They had some nice upscale stores there. Back then, I never imagined Jo'Burg would be like it is now.
Totally agree. But the black population in the US is still growing.Nobody wants to learn some lessons from South Africa.
I grew up in the 'vaal on the collieries thro' the '70's. My Ma is English. My Pops is Boere..
I loved Jo' burg.... This is sad to see.... I live in Nottinghamshire, UK now....
I doubt if I will be fulfilling my dream of coming home anymore....
Bless you for this li'l memory 👍
There is no Home anymore 😢
When you apply a coat of bright shiny glittering paint to a termite infested wall, the paint will eventually peel off or collapse with the wall.
Such a shame. I remember as a little kid in the 1980's Hillbrow was "the" suburb to live in.
Sad, a country in self destruct mode, I spent my childhood growing up in Transvaal between 1980 - 1998, I remember it then and seeing this...........sad.
I lived in Yeoville from 1990 to 1999. I saw how it deteriorated. It was said to be a tolerant, liberal, open, and such like community. (As explained in the film "United colours of Yeoville".) Rockey Street was much like Long Street in Cape Town.
@Vinscient I see no hope for South Africa. When I was there last time, my cousin met me at the airport and as we were driving to his house, he kept a gun in his lap the whole time because there is so much carjacking. All I have now are my memories of how Jo'burg was. It sure was a great city. Be sure to watch the other video, titled "Johannesburg 1972" to see how it was in it's glory.
Not even 25 years. From 1994,so its 19 years now. Just think how its going to look like and be like in another 19 to 20 years. Should see even the small towns....unbelieveble!
You should do a before and after, it seems many younger people can't imagine that city as anything but a wreck.
There is a video here on RUclips titled "Johannesburg 1972," which was filmed in the downtown are of Jo'Burg just like this one.
That is lovely music for these depressing scenes. What is it, please ?
The artist is Enya, but I don't know the name of the song.
The music struck me as well! I finally found it. It's (of course) by Enya, and is from her "A Day Without Rain" -- title is: "One by One."
You are stupid. Go ask your mother
Ah memories. Remember look at this pictures like 15 years go in "Death of Johannesburg". From there I went to read about eugenics science etc. Beautiful time of my life.
Is that music Enya?
I grew up in Hillbrow in the late 80s , early 90s , it was a multi racial community , clean and safe.
Looks like some scenes from an apocalyptic future. it's even eerier because some of the places shown look like they were once inhabitable.
I live in the states. I'm 48 years old, and my mother was from Jo'Burg. She came to the states in 1959. She grew up in a pretty gingerbread style house on Dunbar Street in Yeoville. I remember going to Jo'Burg as a child to visit my relatives. Sure was a beautiful city. Now my relatives are leavig. One cousin moved to the UK in1994, and my mom's brother and his wife moved to Singapore in 2009. Other relatives are going to Australia. Shame.
The video mentions there were 2 filling stations in Rockey Street - with the one being BP.
The other one was Shell, with Italian Motors.
In quite a few African countries (Angola and Mozambique - good examples), the Europeans were threatened and driven out. The countries then virtually collapsed. So, the Europeans were asked to return.
Is this what people call freedom...........sad...Johannesburg was once so blessed........and suddenly destroyed.........
i am from casablanca morocco and our city was once a clean and beautifull place with its great art deco architecture and educated people now remains a trash land full of robers and its buildings collapsing since the 90s
i think since 2010 the situation in south africa looks better and the cities are little cleaner
abderaman alzemouri Casablanca a filthy City
look at the older pictures and you can see how the world was better not only casablanca but the entire world was prosperous
blessed for who?
So sad back in the day I used to go into the centre on a regular basis
What a hole! Thank god i live in Australia
THEY got what they demanded...EVERY BIT OF IT!
And Elvis has left the building,,
There is no doubt this is caused by the ANC government ruling the country.
The country would not be in this state otherwise.
This has not only happened to JHB, it's the entire country.
If a proper government were to take over, it could still be restored. Sadly this will not happen.
[Nephew of Ida] In my regular restaurant is a new waiter, white woman in the 30' and she says it was more an escape than a normal moving away from SA. And she don't like continuing to speak with me about it, she could lose her job.
Who is the artist and what is that song ?
enya
It's amazing how *incongruous" that music is up against the melancholy theme of the video, isn't it? The song is by Enya, and is from her "A Day Without Rain" album. The title is "One by One."
What is the name of the song?
Joburg was a functioning, modern city-what happened to destroy the economy? Gold and diamond mines exhausted? Clearly, no one is investing in the city-why have the real estate values dropped so suddenly? Detroit dies because its major industry (auto manufacturing) moved away-what happene
d in Joburg?
The ANC and the Guptas for starters
@splutonium No, I'm not lying. I was there, I know what I heard. South Africa is in it's last days. My uncle and his wife left there and moved to Singapore two years ago because the crime is so bad. I fear for the lives of my relatives who are still there. Jo'burg is now drowning in garbage and is overrun with rats. Nowadays South Africa's problems have nothing to do with apartheid.
@garyomglol I agree. It happened now in South Africa, but happened before in Angola and Mozambique after Portugal giving them the independence.
I discovered it: it's "One by one", a very beautiful song by Enya, that, for some reason, is perfect for such a sad video.
(The song is from her "A Day Without Rain" album.) It *is* a beautiful piece of music, and somehow leaves a "mixed mood" when listened to while watching that melancholy video.
I wonder where the moderators are.
@splutonium - Department of Labour inspectors surveyed on Friday morning the wreckage of a bridge that collapsed at the Coega development zone outside Port Elizabeth and interviewed eight construction workers about the disaster.
Two construction workers were killed and 18 injured on Thursday when the bottom formwork of the bridge apparently collapsed under the weight of wet concrete being poured into the structure
Doom and gloom hey. Did you post this from your new home in Australia. Those of us who stay here try make a difference, instead of pissing on our own country
@Vinscient
Well - I can see nothing I or anyone says will reconvince you. Six months did not make me expert, but these are areas I got to know rather intimately. Hillbrow was indeed bad, but the CBD and Yeoville much more mixed. There are parts of CBD like Carlton center, Sauer and Jeppe corner, and others that are full of life, at least during daylight hours.
Its an extremely dated video. Even people watching BBC, CNN and Wall street Journal has showed the vast improvements made in the city.
This video is out dated, Private and government are driving out the slum lords. The following have all been renovated into low cost housing, retail or office space: Wits drill hall, Marks apartments, Harrison Reef hotel, La Rosa, Chelsea hotel, plus alot of other. Just do some googling :)
Show us the pics, then
Dit lyk asof daar 'n volskaalse oorlog was!
Geeeezzzz What the hell happened!!!!! It doesn't look that bad in the other videos. Is it starting to improve, or is it getting worse every day.
well put !!! i 100 % agree !!!
Where are you from?
suport apartheid from croatia
Then all this beast must come to your Country
I live in Bryanston in Sandton, South Africa. Wish we could leave this country because of the crime and steadily decaying infra-structure, as well as corruption in government, racism against whites, torture and murder of farmers... it gets worse by the day. My sister had a lovely house in Becker Street Yeoville. She bought it in 1980 and Yeoville was still a leafy tranquil suburb, with Rockey Street being a trendy place with humming night-life and great shopping. These photos are sadly true.
@splutonium - The R555 between Middelburg and Witbank in Mpumalanga is closed due to the collapse of a bridge, Trans African Concessions (Trac) said.

"Emergency plans are in place to accommodate local road users.
"All traffic from the R555 is now diverted to the N4 Toll Route and will have to pass through the Middelburg Toll Plaza," the concessionaire said.
well said!...it is about reality..i oft ask ppl in which 'sub-saharan' African country do u think, based on what u know' would u like to live?...everyone struggles for an answer...ask the same question about Europe and there is no hesitation.....strange that......
MANDELA EFECT
what keeps this video from catching on is a lack of before shots.see any video on the collapse of detroit for reference.
@panzermadame The world would be much better now if the Axis had won the WWII. I feel deep sorrow for the white South Africa.
So sad. And south Africa will never ever again look like what it used to. Even if there was intervention it would take a couple of decades. But still not same.
All apartheid South Africa was concerned about was the appearance of things, appearance of civilization, while they altogether uncivil to the non-whites in South Africa.
The collapse of that illusion once apartheid was abolished was inevitable. If being humane to each other (let alone a majority) is not in the foundations of that society, then it is doomed to crumble to rubble and die.
Racist South Africans should be encouraged to leave the country instead of perpetually undermining its progress
Someone was saying get out our country and go back to Europe (or somewhere else). Well, give us the money and resources to, and we might just do that.
Reminds me of bagdad but bagdad safer
Pretoria STREET, not Road. I grew up there.
Does wanting to get rid of the Afrikaners include e.g. those with Afrikaans sounding names and/or surnames who are English speaking? Or even having Dutch, German or French as their home language? Does wanting to get rid of the Afrikaner include those younger ones who weren't here in the Apartheid era? I'd rather not stereotype.
This video is actually misleading. Most of you guys commenting here dont even live in SA. I live here, and know Joburg welll, and whoever made the video is only showing the bad parts. Its obvious what has happened in Joburg...Urban Migration...most of the business and residential areas moved into the northern suburbs which actually look really first world as a write this. ask the person who made the video to film the new joburg, and ull think ur in europe. Same as Cape Town...incredible city!!!!
Wonderful music
It's amazing how *incongruous" that music is up against the melancholy theme of the video, isn't it? The song is by Enya, and is from her "A Day Without Rain" album. The title is "One by One."
......that goes for SA in general. ....where do they all vome from so all of a sudden?
What would South Africa look today if black people took charge of running the country way back in the 1960s?
Like Zimbabwe...
Now don’t get all weepy about those cool and trendy hangouts. Who was hanging out there, apart from a very small, privileged portion of the population? It’s understandable that there’s no inclination or motivation to preserve your nostalgic symbols from an era when these people were not allowed a table in the Café Zurich. They were even banned from the main counter at the Jewish deli. Instead, their days consisted of hours of commuting on overcrowded trains, long hours of work at ridiculously low remuneration, and return to their impoverished shacks in the townships late at night.
It's a shame that these very educated people were enslaved to do menial jobs. What were their qualifications again, I can't remember...
If you don't get the concept of being in a society, and that problems that are hidden reappearing in other pernicious aspects of that society, then maybe you should educate yourself.
Mentally subjugating a majority race and enslaving it, then expecting it to build skyscrapers (which they may have never had interest in) is a madman's folly.
Perhaps you need to a psychologist to help you with your sociopathic tendencies.
Remember something else that not all whites in South Africa are Afrikaners. I also prefer to regard others as individuals.
by the way whats the song
The song is by Enya, and is from her "A Day Without Rain" album. The title is "One by One."
You`re fucking kidding me right? Right?!?!? Progress?!?! Call my eye doctor... IMMEDIATELY!!!
In my country is worst, building from the belle epoque (parisian style buildings) are being destroyed to build new buildings or are being occupied by illegal immigrants, unfortunatelly most of the people don´t care and they go on with their lifes, one day we are not going to recognize our city, the city it was used to be was an european style city in South America, and now that is changing.
yea my brothers dream singer
Sadly, there are huge swaths of America that look like this. Detroit would be the most obvious choice.
Agreed, these black and white South Africans both need to get over their whining.
Shut up fool
This is very slanted, there are parts of American cities that look like this. I walked in those streets of Johbg for 6 months, and yes some of them are that bad but there is also a regeneration in some parts of the CBD. Besides, if you left SA never to return what do you care about it anyway? Focus on London, UK or wherever you stay instead, I hear they have problems of their own. Poverty and the culture of brutality under apartheid bred what you show here.
johannesburg zuid afrika my blood my family lives there the gold city zo jammer om het naar de klote te zien gaan
grtz rotterdam holland to johannesburg ga jullie baije goe
and you would knoiw because you watch TV right?
Geeeezzzz What the hell happened!!!!! It doesn't look that bad in the other videos. Is it starting to improve, or is it getting worse every day. Reminds me of Detroit and other American cities.
This is an extremely dated and biased video, The City is currently reviving and has been awarded one of the top ten turnaround cities in the world (Lonely Planet) There are red tour bus, walking tours and public transport (Reya Vaya) which allows for people to rediscover this city. Major businesses are moving back and banks are creating commercial opportunities in conjunction with private property developers. Johannesburg is truly a phenomenal place far from what tripe has been shown here.
Like the old gold mine towns in the Wild Wild West......JHB is becoming the same, no gold more rubbish.....It will become a ghost town very soon.
@nativetexanful Ofcourse it was, my god as a white Dutch we already knew this ,and could see that comming..thats's why most of us left...we gave up what we have build because there is no way black can rule the system we created...it took us 100's of years to create is and make it work..African people for you its's the begin.
Look I agree that it has run down under black rule. But the problem is not the skin tone. The problem is financial status, joburg was flogged suddenly by people with a low incomes if any at all. It is the same all over the world, low income areas simply look disgusting no matter the skin tone. The only solution for joburg is to remove most residential housing or uplift peoples' financial status'
Well I guess if we wait another 26 years or so then pretty much the whole of South Africa should look like joburg.
Sad sad sad. How is this possoble. Is humans capable of this.
Afro-engineering at its best
@Vinscient - no worries thats common saying in the green
I have been interested in Joburg as of recent. It is amazing that it was beautiful in the 70's! How did it get so bad? I mean NYC was bad in the 70's now it is so so safe and beautiful, its where I live now. But I assume it was not as bad as Jo burg is now.
This would make a great documentary.
So who is at fault - at least the Spanish had enough patriotic leadership to fight a civil war to defeat the Reds, the Boers just rolled over.
It's called a metaphor.
AMERICA.....2030........
Looks better than Detroit
@Vinscient
this is what happens if blacks are in power look at other countrys in afrika .all the same .we left sa in the 70s but still miss it to this day.
Even impalas are stolen.
Just like the land you colonizers took
