    I cant help to wonder what Colonel Cooper's scout rifle concept would be today. Keep in mind that his visions of a scout rifle are almost 50 years old. There has been a lot of advancements in the shooting industry over the past half of a century. I would like to think that he would like to see his vision of a scout rifle evolve along with the technology advancements of today. There will always be the purists who will say " It can't be a scout rifle if it is chambered in a non military caliber, or it cant be a scout rifle if it weighs more than 7.7 lbs." Reality is let the concept evolve. If you are a purist, wonderful. There is always room for old classics in this world.

      You are 100% correct. Let technology guide the future of the Scout Rifle Concept!!
      The other purist argument is that the rifle must have a Stripper Clip Loader. Truth be told, Modern rifles don't have that feature. I need to do a test to test what is faster, Mag Reload or Stripper Clip Reload.

      @@yrsued My first scout rifle project was an old Peruvian Mauser 98 originally chambered in 30-06 (stamped .30 U.S.) I had it cut down to 18" and fitted it with a Ramline stock, a XS systems scout mount with a Weaver pistol scope. The action was stripper clip fed if needed. The weaver "fish eyed" badly. and the felt recoil was above noticeable. I shelfed the project after the scope frustrations and I wasn't satisfied with the accuracy, with the intentions of using the action for a 35 Whelen build in the future.

    So if u already have a ruger american ranch 300 blk but it takes barrel mags and it's an older stock so u can't change it to aics mags can u put this stock on and change it to the aics mags??

      It converts it over to the AICS style. That’s why it has that “bottom metal” polymer piece he was talking about. I know I am a bit late, but just in case anyone was wondering

    Sweet looking rig. How does it run?
    What is the final weight? Did you notice a significant difference adding the muzzle break? I was thinking about removing mine to try to get closer to weight, though I have a long way to go, needing to drop almost 2 pounds from my rifle.

    • @yrsued
      @yrsued 3 года назад +2

      Ya, this is a heavy rifle from the get go and this stock does NOT help, this is very comfortable and the Brake helps, I never fired it without the Brake, but I might take it out for a test!!

    I have this rifle and would like to do a few of these things to it. What model scope is that? Also, I'm new to hunting so forgive my ignorance. Does one have to drill into the actual barrel to install that longer Skinner brand pic rail? I'd be keeping the original stock on mine. Thanks.

    • @yrsued
      @yrsued Месяц назад +1

      In order to Install the Skinner Sights Scout Base you will have to Drill and Tap the barrel. The Scope is the Leupold Scout Scope, I think they only make one or two models.

    Tried this mess. Ruger American WONT TOP LOAD. Horrible for the scout rifle philosophy.

    • @yrsued
      @yrsued 3 года назад +3

      Your choice, this is America after all, you buy what you want!! But.. What is this thing with being a top loader or not?? I did a side by side test, it is faster to mag load than to top load, even with a Stripper Clip!!

    • @yrsued
      @yrsued 2 года назад

      @@TheLyingFigure This is correct!! Mag loading is MUCH faster to both load and unload!!

    • @JASmith-oy8db
      @JASmith-oy8db 2 года назад

      I can imagine another non-idealized scenario when top loading is not only helpful but essential. Suppose, for just a second, that you lose your extra mags for whatever reason: then fast mag loading goes out the window, and top loading for follow up shots is going to be FAR more efficient than dropping your last remaining mag to reload it before firing again. I have the American Ranch in 556, which is a terrific rifle, and I practice mag loading since top loading is a not an option. But, I'm saving up for the real Ruger Scout in 308, and once I get it I'll be practicing top loading technique for efficient preparedness if top loading is ever necessary. So I'm on board with the scout philosophy of top loading for an effective option.
