I did this exact hike in October of 2013 and was probably the highlight of my trip. Watching this video brought back so many fond memories of both my trip to China and the hike. The hike was amazing. It was so quiet, empty, in its natural state. After we lost the Mongolian women (which hiked with us for a VERY long time) we would go for long stretches without seeing anyone else. I'd highly recommend this hike to anyone that is physically capable. Another great hike my boyfriend and I did recently was up table mountain in Cape town, SA. . Scary at times, HARD, but rewarding.

Thanks for the comment Andy! I couldn't agree more, this was one of the highlights of the trip, highly recommended. I'll have to check out the Cape Town hike you mentioned. I also highly recommend the Trolltunga hike in Norway, check out the video of that hike on our channel

That is really cool! I hope to visit China someday in the future when I'm older and can afford it, and hopefully it doesn't change too much when I plan to go so I can have an experience that is at least similar to what you guys had! Great vid~

Marley S. Thank you! Going to China isn't as expensive as you might think. I saved money for about 6 months by not eating out at restaurants and supplemented my income by selling plasma. I also found really cheap flights (about $750 round trip to Beijing from Miami) If I could do it so can you. Start saving and get out there!

@@Tenacioustrekkers thank you. I never used to be into trekking holidays but last year I walked the Inca Trail.
After that I really wanted to do more.

MrMetalover666 nice! I’ve always wanted to do the Inca trail. Check out our video for the Trolltunga hike in Norway. It’s one of my favorite hikes of all time, you might like it too.

Great video guys! I'm going to China next year and have been trying to work out which part of the wall to visit. Looks challenging but this section seems too perfect to miss.

    • @Tenacioustrekkers

Thank you! Glad you liked it. I would definitely recommend doing the lesser known sections of the Great Wall. Sections like Mutianyu and Badaling are heavily trafficked and mostly restored. Although further away, the lesser known sections are generally much more pleasant and authentic ;) Safe travels!

I'm from Mexico and that makes me very incredible, although in Mexico it's Chichén Itzá and Palenque (I'm 13 years old)

Great video, thanks. Where exactly from Jinshanling did you start? What pass? When I look this route up online many sites say it is 10km long, not 6km?

Thanks for the great video. Brings back memories. We hiked this section in September 2000. It looks a bit different now. Have the Chinese been doing some restoration work? Parts of the Simatai section back then were a bit dilapidated. I remember some local goatherds who would follow us selling small bottles of water for 8 yuan a piece. I still got dehydrated and was rescued by an Aussie nurse at our hotel in Chengde who whipped up some homemade electrolyte replacement for me. I'd love to do it all again but age is catching up with me.

+attymarco Thank you! At the beginning of our hike it looked like there was some restoration work, but towards end (2nd half of video) the wall is completely wild. We went in October so it was nice weather, not too hot. I also took a liter of water in my bag so prevent dehydration.. Glad you were ok! I'm sure you could still visit this amazing place again!

+Parameswary Thangavelu thanks! No, we arrived in Jingshanling and departed from Simatai. I would recommend a one way hike that way you can see more and not have to backtrack. You can arrange transport at the other end like we did. I also definitely recommend going to the less frequented portions of the wall. Mutanyui and Badaling are close but very congested and unauthentic. Safe travels!

Great Video!!! Can I ask you, is it possible to do the hike on the opposite way, I mean from tower 22 to tower 1 or this steep section of the wall is too dangerous to do it downhill? thank you! :)

    • @Tenacioustrekkers
      @Tenacioustrekkers  8 лет назад +2

+panos sior Hello! thanks for watching our video. To answer your question, yes it is possible. While doing the hike from Jinshanling to Simatai, we only encountered 2 hikers going the opposite direction (Simatai to Jinshanling) so it appears that Simatai to Jinshanling is a less common route, although I'm sure, just as beautiful and challenging. The only reason we did it the way we did is because of the transport options offered by our hostel. They dropped us off at Jinshanling and picked us up at Simatai.
There are several transport options available to do it the opposite way, China Highlights being one of the bigger companies offering this.
You would be dropped off at Simatai West (also called the east gate of the Jinshanling Great Wall) which is about 130 kilometers from downtown Beijing. After purchasing tickets, you would climb up the wall through an unrestored watchtower called Houchuankou Pass (后川口). After about 3 hours you would end your hike arriving at Zhuanduokou Pass (砖垛口), it is a three-story tower with large red, wooden windows.
I do believe this way would be challenging but for a different reason. Ours had a lot of very steep climbing. Personally I find climbing up a very steep incline much less dangerous than descending. It is easier for me to lean into the incline and maintain balance, whereas climbing downwards at an incline, you have to lean back to not fall. I can also say that as a rule of thumb, descending is a lot less tiring.
Check out our blog for the accompanying post with more detail about the hike.
Whichever way you choose to do it, I am excited for you! This is an amazing hike and you will enjoy every minute of it. The views are spectacular and worth whatever soreness you might feel the next day :) Safe travels!

Can i ask, so you guys entered through the front gate and exit through the east gate? is that correct? Thanks!

Thank you! We started at Jinshanling and worked our way to Simatai. We entered through Zhuanduokou Pass and got off the wall at tower #22 (not technically east gate which is a little further) Hope this answered your question ;)
