Hi Aristo! Jealous that you own it, I'm keen to give it another go sometime and try out some landscapes and skateboarding shots. The portraits of the models came out great! Fisheye lenses are definitely getting popular again. It is a look! I would rent this lens though. It would never be something I would own unless a specific long-term project demanded it.
Cheers Brent! That is indeed the best way to go about using a lens like this I reckon, I'm keen to own it since it would sit nicely alongside the 500mm as a statement piece of sorts, but I got the 500 for a ridiculously low price and would need to find one of these for super low too to be able to sleep at night haha.

It would be cool to see a video about your process for dialing in digital prints from your film scans. The comparison between C-Prints was very enlightening and I'm looking into giving larger format digital printing a try.
I can recommend the 50! It's nice and wide but not so wide that the only thing one sees looking at photos made with it is the wideness. I prefer it to the 65mm because my 65 is a disaster that's had to be fixed 3 times and is still broken anyway somehow. Jammed onto my pro S body in fact lul. I shall look into a dialing in the digi prints video, if I reckon I can say enough to make it worth putting out there then it shall be done!
Yes William it was interesting episode. I think fish-eye is the kind of lenses that you can imagine in film photography. but after your examples. I can!
I back that! My ideal discovery location would be the bottom of a shoebox somewhere hahaha, holding thumbs that a scenario like that manifests itself for us both!
interesting lens, even with the rear filters, kind of reminds me of the 38 mm fisheye that hasselblad has for their V system, same design, almost, with that one the front element/apature assembly detaches from the mount/helicoid assebly to add the filter on the back, and has a case simmilar, but with orange/yellow/clear filters in it.
Thanks for posting this! Your thoughts on its usefulness compared to cost are my reasons for not getting one, especially in that the going rate for these in top order has nearly doubled in the last five years as has the cost of many of the rarer RB/RZ lenses. I think I have read practically every review ever posted on this lens and you are the first to mention severe resolution and chromatic aberration problems. Perhaps this is a fault with your example - the tolerances on such a lens are very tight and a single element decentred by a blow can really affect performance. Incidentally when new the lens came with the filter spaces in the case complete with a set of filters! Enjoyed your work as always.
Glad you enjoyed Gareth! Always great to have your insights on things too! The main place I saw mention of the issues with smearing/aberration similar to what I experienced was in user forums, not professional reviews. I think there was one fella who was actually from Johannesburg in the early 2000's who posted some thoughts on trying to make photos that didn't look super distorted with the lens and then some other owners chimed in with failings beyond distortion that they had experienced. The tolerances would indeed be very tight though and the example I tried out did look to have lived a somewhat tough life so that might've impacted the severity of things haha! I wish the case had the filters with it, quite a bummer that they aren't there since they're so expensive to pick up individually! Lovely to have you stop by as always!
Such a mad lens! Glad you dig the intro, I had to go to that spot three times cus I kept messing it up without noticing but was worth it in the end ahah!
I'm going to have a play with that lens sometime soon hopefully! It'll definitely be specific use, but if you're into fisheye things I can guarantee it'll be very fishy haha. I think the overall quality might be a bit nicer than the RB one based off what people have been telling me, but we'll wait and see!

Great photo and review 👏 Thought that 50mm is wide enough. But this 37mm lens is truly the beast. Is pretty rare in Taiwan, haven’t seen it sales on the market.

what’s your flash set up? I can’t seem to get my rb to work with flash, i’m not sure if it’s because the pc ports are just used up, or if it’s an issue with my transmitter not being compatible and I need a converter, or etc.
I have two Elinchrom BXRi 500 flash heads that both sync nicely with the RB, but I always use a physical sync cable since I haven't found any reliable transmitters as of yet - probably cus I've only tried the cheap ones but I get along fine with the physical cable anyway so not in a rush to sort that setup out yet. I'm trying to finesse a wireless setup with a friend but as of now it still only flashes intermittently for some reason , I reckon it's probably bad transmitters, but I'll put a video out sometime if I ever find a super reliable way to do it haha!

I like the fisheye look, but I don't think it would be a great lens to own, or maybe it would just for the rarity. Who knows! I hope you get your car soon!
Great vid William! What's your opinion on light meter apps? If you're getting started with photography, do you suggest shelling out the cash for a proper light meter eg sekonic, or is an app sufficient?
Thank you! I got by for 4 years just using my phone - you can get good readings out of it if you know how to calculate exposures of off different readings around a scene, but an incident meter like a sekonic L308B is really a game changer, I wish I'd bought one earlier, I couldn't go without it now!
It is super cool! Kind of limiting in terms of photos though since the only thing people will ever see looking at the photos is "woah fisheye" if that makes sense, also very tricky to get good compositions going
With a PC sync cable! Plugs straight into the strobe with a 3.5mm jack and then into the lens with a PC port, you can also use a PC to hotshoe adapter if you want to run a wireless setup, those can just be a bit more finnicky!
It will indeed! So long as the body is switched to RBL or the red dot on older bodies it should fire - given that you set the shutter speed on the lens.
@@che6953 on the rz67, depending on model, the shutter speed dial will have a setting that says "RBL" or is just a red dot, on the pro ii I think it says RBL and on the older bodies I think it's just a red dot on the shutter speed dial. If you want an rb lens to fire on an RZ body the body needs to be on that setting
I really wanted to shoot some skate stuff with it but that didn't line up this time! Will have to do a full video shooting skate stuff, have been wanting to do something like that for a while, maybe the 16mm and this one together for a skate video hahaha!
Not sure I care for this lens that much. While the center portion of the images look pretty good there is too much fisheye distortion for my taste on the edges and if you are a little too close. I also have the 50mm lens but must admit that I don't use it that much. My two favorites lens are the K/L 127mm and the 140mm macro.
I really like the 127 too! I don't actually own one at the moment but it's a very strong competitor for my favorite next to the 90. Super keen to try out the 140 macro sometime a few people have mentioned it to me!
I concur! Maybe someday I'll get super into fashion and end up picking one up haha, I'm sure Tim Walker must've owned one at some point lol, the 50mm is indeed well worth it!
Pff don't worry Will, Chromatic Aberration is a style. You know how in pc games ect everyone hates bloom? Well Bloom IRL with pro-mist filters look amazing. Sooner or later CA will be a creative choice because almost all "modern" lenses will have have removed it. It will only really be possible with lenses made pre 90s
Quite true! Would be keen to play around with some really terrible lenses that just have CA across the board haha, would make for an interesting look I reckon! If it ever becomes a popular creative choice my 500mm will sort me out nicely still at least hahaha
So weird how close one has to get to fill the frame haha! I reckon it would be about 8mm on crop frame hey, it's like 18mm on full frame equiv so it probably would be like 8mm - although I'm no expert at those conversions so that's just a guess!
The answer to your question: why? Probably because the Pentax 67 system had a 35mm fisheye. If you use a lens like this for a while, you learn that serious images can be had by carefully selecting your subject and composition to cancel or incorporate any distortion..
@@pain6154 I use a Manfrotto Befree, ignore the screw size though just get a little thread widening adapter to put in the bottom of the RB and it'll work with any tripod haha!
@@randallstewart175 That's the next lens on my list to try out! I'm not unfamiliar with the idea of selecting subject matter carefully in order to adjust for distortion, but I don't find that manner of image making to be particularly exciting. I'd rather have a photo of something look very distorted and be composed the way I want than have it look less distorted but have a composition with the main goal being to minimize distortion. Thanks for the tips though! Shall see if I can incorporate a shot like that with the 35mm Pentax lens though for comparison!

I like the fisheye look, but I don't think it would be a great lens to own, or maybe it would just for the rarity. Who knows! I hope you get your car soon!
Haha the rarity is the main draw I reckon! I hope the car materializes soon too, then the true adventures shall begin haha!
lol the homages to the 500mm lens video
Hey man gotta have some homages for the rare rb lens vibes yaknow!
dude i literally have been wanting one for the longest but i cant find a decent priced one not in japan
Have faith and keep a close eye on the second hand listings! This one came off Facebook marketplace I believe
@@willysheepskin will do! thanks for the content as usual, first cape town film photography i really know of actually :) beautiful place
@@willysheepskin I guess I'm going to save up those pennies! Thanks for your help!
What a cool lens I’m definitely not brave enough to use it
It is super cool! Kind of limiting in terms of photos though since the only thing people will ever see looking at the photos is "woah fisheye" if that makes sense, also very tricky to get good compositions going
@@willysheepskin I’ve used some wide lenses but nothing like that
Definitely make sense
Hi Will, how did you connect the strobe to the RB?
With a PC sync cable! Plugs straight into the strobe with a 3.5mm jack and then into the lens with a PC port, you can also use a PC to hotshoe adapter if you want to run a wireless setup, those can just be a bit more finnicky!
Will this work on RZ?
It will indeed! So long as the body is switched to RBL or the red dot on older bodies it should fire - given that you set the shutter speed on the lens.
@@willysheepskin what do you mean by ‘the body is switched to RBL’?
@@che6953 on the rz67, depending on model, the shutter speed dial will have a setting that says "RBL" or is just a red dot, on the pro ii I think it says RBL and on the older bodies I think it's just a red dot on the shutter speed dial. If you want an rb lens to fire on an RZ body the body needs to be on that setting
I read this as wildest lens lol, also I'm jealous Ive wanted one for years haha
Wanted one for skate photography though, but might just pick up the 50mm instead, my 65mm can do a pretty good job in the mean time
I really wanted to shoot some skate stuff with it but that didn't line up this time! Will have to do a full video shooting skate stuff, have been wanting to do something like that for a while, maybe the 16mm and this one together for a skate video hahaha!
@@willysheepskin would be really cool! Definitely worth doing Imo
I got a boy in the UK that uses it for Fashion. I want one but it’s stupid expensive. The 50mm is worth it anyday
If it ever becomes a popular creative choice my 500mm will sort me out nicely still at least hahaha
sick video
Thanks James!

Dangg always makin surprise video don’t u eh hahaha
Hey man gotta try keep it fresh you know lol!
9:41 rest in peace headphone users.. 😋
That must feel unnatural to put the camera so close to your models! I’m guessing that lens is equivalent to about 8mm on a crop sensor digital camera?
So weird how close one has to get to fill the frame haha! I reckon it would be about 8mm on crop frame hey, it's like 18mm on full frame equiv so it probably would be like 8mm - although I'm no expert at those conversions so that's just a guess!

The answer to your question: why? Probably because the Pentax 67 system had a 35mm fisheye. If you use a lens like this for a while, you learn that serious images can be had by carefully selecting your subject and composition to cancel or incorporate any distortion..
You're still on a legendary streak here, not soon to be beaten I reckon!
@@willysheepskin what tripod do you use i cant seem to find one with the right screw size🤔
Shall see if I can incorporate a shot like that with the 35mm Pentax lens though for comparison!
clean your glass table aaaaaaaaaah! ;)
Ahahah was waiting for someone to comment on that, the angle of the sun made stuff kick off much worse than it actually was - wanted to redo those shots but didn’t have the time unfortunately lol! Next time it’ll be squeaky clean dust free
