System 76 is quite expensive, but they pay their employees a fair salary, instead of outsourcing to China, like most other companies. Other companies that sell Linux laptops are Star Labs, Tuxedo and Slimbook, just to name a few.
They are cheaper than Windows laptops since Linux is free, so in my opinion, it's worth it.
And more customisable, and you get an almost infinite number of distributions.
@@JW20236 Oh yeah. Forgot about that.
I'm using a 2019 HP laptop (17-ca0xxx), with a AMD Ryzen 2300 APU that I've quite easily converted to running Linux, better still I've discovered it can manage up to 16 GB of RAM and it has a open M.2 slot that can take 2280 nvme ssds.
So for under 500 bucks I'll have a nice portable linux PC that can do some light gaming and just generally be fun to use.
Next to be *Corrupted* is my Desktop with a Ryzen 2600X, Radeon 5700XT, 32 gigs of ram, and around 14 terabytes of storage, really not sure why I waited so long to add linux after building it, Windows might survive as a VM on that system at least
Not necessarily. Companies like Dell, HP, and Lenovo have licensing agreements with Microsoft that gives them a massive discount on Windows licences since they're buying in bulk. That's how they're able to make Windows laptops that cost almost as much as Windows itself.
Concerned about build quality of these laptops. Weary of dropping 1$K on something that may chip or wear down the chassis easily.
The build quality of my brother's S76 Gazelle is pretty good. It's super heavy and thick, so not the most portable, but it feels like it was built well, and I feel like it wouldn't break if I dropped it a few times.
Sadly most of us can only afford older thinkpads for experiencing desktop linux in all of its glory.
I have a 2019 HP that I'm corrupting with Manjaro Linux's power, if I play with it much longer I may end up wiping out the Windows install because Linux is just way too fun to mess around with

im so tired of wifi or sound not working without binary blobs, any tips?
purism with ceo Toad is a sketchy outfit that takes advantage of linux "nerds' with security concerns ...so far i haven't fallen for their scam,
since dell acquired alienware it too, turned to shite.
Not to argue with you - unfortunately mid ranged laptop's are cheaper to buy with windows pre installed. It's good fun trying out different Distros and seeing which you prefer.
How is your brother - I've been waiting to see his '76 being put through some heavy performance work. LOL- I've done their ''build a laptop' whilst drooling ahh
don't tell people to stay on windows, lol
their is always an ubuntu, zorin or mint to start with.
An absurd formulation of the question.
