For anyone who may not know this, the PSN store has an All-In-One package that contains 1.5, 2.5, 2.8, a dynamic background theme and a pre-order for 3 for $100. Because I keep seeing the ads for “The Story So Far” for $40 and it didn’t look too much different that the All-In-One on the PSN store but if it is, feel free to politely correct me. Honestly, when you really think about it, Xehanort is kinda similar to Voldemort in Harry potter. In order to reach his goal of spreading darkness around the worlds in KH, he's resorted to preserving parts of his soul into countless vessels (or bodies) in the form of Vanitas, Terra, the organization, even Riku etc. Whenever they become possessed by him and suddenly have his golden eyes. It's similar to how Voldemort uses a horcrux to preserve parts of his soul so he can always come back. Both Sora and Xehanort's philosophies are halfway right, they both either want the world to be consumed by darkness, or covered in light, when there's supposed to be a balance between the two.
Honestly, DDD was fine aside from the stupid time travel BS. Re:Coded's the one that irks me the most because it literally is the most worthless title in the series.
Introspectre It's not, though. Gameplay is fun as hell and has what has been considerably the best Command Deck system and combat is super fun, and the plot tells us that Maleficent and Pete know everything that happened while they were gone. It's also the first game to mention the Book of Prophecies and the Foretellers, as Unchained didn't come out on PC until 2012. So, no, I'd say it's pretty relevant.
Sorry, but it wasn’t just the self-contradictory time-travel, that was a problem with DDD, but also stuff like the narrative structure, how sleeping worlds work, dreams within dreams, nobodies having hearts, characters returning after their halves were killed, Xehanort showing up as Geezernort instead of Terranort, Lea inexplicably getting a keyblade, Sora somehow having a computer in his heart that has its own virtual world, the Country of the Musketeers just making us ask more questions about MDG, Minnie, and Pete, Dreameaters barely having anything to do with the plot, Dreameaters being effing tedious to create and level, and flowmotion being overly flashy and needlessly complicating combat and movement. A lot of other people also hate the drop system.
Dream Drop Sora gameplay fun as hell? Maybe if it had been released before KH2 and Birth by Sleep but in comparison, gameplay is not that fun and everything significant that happened could’ve been tied in with DDD or 0.2 instead. Felt too much like we were repeating KH1 for the 3rd time
Sorry i’m a little late to the comments. But y’all, this is very much correct. Buns has been helping me out with these games and i had been so reluctant for YEARS because of these misconceptions. But LORD. The story makes sense, it’s a lot, but it’s emotional, powerful, and i love every single character in their own way and I don’t regret it -at all- and wish i done it sooner. I’m on Birth by Sleep now and everything’s been so great and i cried like 7 times. I only did it because Buns wouldn’t let me not play it. And i appreciate it tbh, probably the only RPG series i’ve truly appreciated. LOVE YOU BUNS
Mirmisian I’ll admit, I remember the card battle system was a pain in the ass when I played it on the Gameboy Advance years ago. Like, I get the need to change things up, but that obviously wasn’t the right way to do it based on the poor sales.
Megan Rowell I haven’t played the gba release but the ps4 one I have and I really enjoyed the card system. By looking at some people play the game I noticed no one cares about combos and zeros. People are hitting enemies with zero cost attack cards instead of keeping it and using it to card break. Also combos are so fun! By combos I mean using 3 cards at the same time to use one more powerful attack(Ars arcanum, mega flare, omnislash,etc.)

Every now and then, my mind drifts back to the first time I heard about KH. It was 2002, I had finished playing FFVIII recently and was reading a magazine with an article about the game. It mentioned a boy fighting shadow creatures with a giant key alongside Disney and FF characters and had a picture with a giant heart moon in the background. I thought "That sounds stupid" and moved on to the next article, but the concept and the game's cover art stuck with me. About a year later our family got a PS2 and my sister and I got to pick a game each to go along with it. I eventually picked FFX for myself, but she ended up picking KH because she was more open about liking Disney movies than what I was at the time. It didn't take long for us to fall in love with both games. What gets me more than anything is knowing that millions of people probably had that exact same impression of the game and how it is both absolutely right and wrong at the same time. KH is unapologetically stupid, but because it fully commits to its ideas with fun gameplay, great music, inventive world design, making you feel as you're playing through various Disney movies, and just the right amount of anime melodrama it manages to pull it off into a weird, charming, and ultimately memorable package.
I grow up with KH. I played it since I am 10 years old and because of that I never found it stupid ore weird like at all. Everyone is like "Disney and Final Fantasy what a wierd mix. How does it work so well?" and fore me it is completely normal. What is stupid ore weird about it? That he uses a Key as a weapon? I have seen Characters uses tattoos, a brush, masks, haire and other stuff as weapons. The Key I found not really stupid. Unrealistic but not stupid. Its fantasy after all. Yeah ok some of the writing is stupid. I dont argue with that.
I had a similar experience. I saw an add for KH1 in a magazine right before it came out and thought it looked stupid. Two years later, I won the original Chain of Memories as a prize at Dave & Buster’s, and absolutely fell in love. To this day, it’s my favorite franchise of all time, be it game, movie, or book.
Sofaris SAME!!! Since I grew up with KH, I can never relate with people who say that's its a strange mix-up. It's completely normal to me. I'll admit I always thought the Key was a weird weapon as a kid though lol.
When I was in my edgy mid teens, I thought kingdom hearts was the lamest shit cause the Disney part but a few months ago I decided to stop being a damn grinch (also a little push from a friend who likes the games) and pick up the ps4 collection and I love it! I think the Disney part is what throws a lot of people off
My friends wanted me to get into Kingdom Hearts for a while, but part of the reason I actually started was honestly because of these videos. There was just so much passion thrown into them that they made me wanna see what all the fuss was about. And here I am. I’ve played every KH game on the PS4, watched all the movies and I’m prepped for KH3. I must say, the “Kingdom Hearts Pain Train” is an accurate term, but thanks Buns for pushing me to get into this series. I pull my hair out because of it but I’ve grown to love it.

In my case, it was be 7 years old and into Final Fantasy, ha ha (I was an odd kid). I was socially awkward, but I had a few friends, so I wouldn't figure out just how socially awkward I was until I moved to the other side of the country where I didn't know anybody and no one wanted to know me...
For me i was a fan of Disney And Final Fantasy so when i saw Sora for the first time i was like ''Wait,why is Cloud's hair is brown" then i played it and i was like ''Mom, hurry i need to get the sequel" it was 2012 when i was 8 years old

i honestly cant get kingdom hearts, the final fantasy and disney aesthetics are too disjointed and jarring for me, but its endearing to see such a passionate and dedicated fanbase, so you guys keep doing what youre doing and i wish the best of luck
I never understood how KH could be considered confusing. Characters flat out explain what's going on in nearly every scene with 45 minute monologues. It couldn't be less subtle unless Nomura just held up a sign in the bottom corner of the screen with plot details.
pwnorbepwned Honestly the biggest offender is KH1 in BBS. Donald and Goofy know what a keyblade is, That know Xehanort as Mickey should. After Chain it is usually pretty solid after that.

Okay. I have been super resistant to this series because of how MUCH there is to dig into at this point (played through a third of the first game when it came out-I had rented it, and then proceeded to let the series slip through my fingers like an ever growing tentacled beast). The first Kingdom Hearts game I played was Dream Drop Distance. It was what originally got me into the games cause of the game play and the adorable characters, even though I was confused on what was happening 😂

And then I bought them all again on the PS3 and PS4...Yeah, I think it's a pretty good franchise. It has Winnie the Pooh in it. And I love that the most. Excellent video, Buns! Kingdom Hearts is the very first game I think I truly got into that wasn't Pokémon: my stepdad gifted me it and a PS2 for Christmas one year and I went from "ehh I like Pokémon but I'm not really into playing games" to "I love videogames oh my god" and no matter how old I get and how my tastes have changed, I can't stop appreciating Kingdom Hearts for getting me into the world of videogames
The first Kingdom Hearts game I played was KHII and even if I was a bit confused, I enjoyed the gameplay very much. Then I tried playing the first one and I couldn't get past Wonderland because I was 10 and stupid, wasn't as good in English as now, and walkthrough wasn't a thing back then. Now 22, I decided to buy a PS4 to relieve stress from university and tried playing all the games again after seeing your other for beginners videos and you know what Buns? I'm in love. This series brought me on a truly magical journey. It's emotional and tragic, but also very beautiful. It's not perfect and I can see plotholes in many places, but I really hold it dear to my heart so thank you for that :)

Same here. KH1 wasn't bad so to say, but its simple story really gets outshined by all the crazyiness that happens in the sequels. And i honestly prefer the crazy route lol. *i love getting my mind fucked.* Thats what got me into this franchise after all. To figure out what the hell is going on!
Same here. To be honest back in the day I didn't even realize in the logo there was a II sign that meant 2. I just assumed it was a standalone game and got confused af when I started playing
Wayneisboss I had been introduced to the series by a friend who one day just pulled out a few games she had and I ended up playing just beginning portion fighting the Ff characters and getting the stuff for the raft. I thought it was fun but kinda forgot about it until one day we were doing some Christmas shopping and I saw kh 2 and I asked my mom to get it for me (I didn't know at the time that it was kh 2 since I only knew about kh 1).
I just bought a PS4 Pro a little over a week ago, I decided to buckle down and buy The Story So Far Collection so I can play through the games! I had KH 1, 2, Chain of Memories, AND Re: Chain of Memories as a kid but never beat any of them! After 29 hours I FINALLY beat KHFM and started working on CoM! I can't think about anything else, this series has literally taken over my life! I bought Sora's Crown necklace and a keyblade necklace and I'm so in love with the series!
I actually have to agree, as someone who went back and watched Days before playing II Final Mix after not having played II in years. II has a LOT more weight to it after watching the Days movie, and the mystery of who Roxas is does not make up for it. There are significant cutscenes added in Final Mix that were absent from the original and fully expect the player to have watched Days as context. It’s a much more emotional roller coaster ride than I ever remember the original II being.

Kh 1 was my very first game when I was four. (It was love at first sight) As soon as I saw my favorite RUclipsr upload my favorite game I literally cried tears of joy!
Keyteck 120 You mean his final smash? I actually had a crazy idea. You know how Ryu was given two final smashes? How about we give Sora 2 final smashes based on his costume? I was going to suggest four costumes for Sora and 4 more for Roxas, with Final Form and limit break respectively, but the new smash is getting rid of transformations, so instead; Sora gets the Trinity attack, holding his keyblade high and a massive light goes out attacking everyone around him, (no Donald or goofy though, they shouldn't make any appearance whatsoever, that way we can avoid Disney interference and keep smash bros a video game characters only game), and we can still give Roxas his limit break, but he is uncontrollable and sends massive pillars of light everywhere to launch everyone it hits, just like in his boss fight in KH2 Final Mix. Also, I would change the keyblade to the Star Seeker, OathKeeper, or Ultima Weapon, since the Kingdom Key has the Mickey Mouse icon on the keychain.
Dunno if you'll see this, but I figured this would be the best spot to make this. I wasn't a fan of Kingdom Hearts before watching your videos. I played 1 and 2, but could never finish them. I could never get the gameplay right, and after so many games came out, it seemed too daunting. But because of these videos you make (along with current circumstances), I decided to dive headfirst and play the series from beginning to end. Currently, I am starting my playthrough of KH3, right after finishing 0.2 Birth By Sleep. And I have you to thank for that. Your Beginner's Guides, plus your other videos, helped me jumpstart the long journey. So thanks Buns!

I started watching your videos a few days ago when you talked about the hardest soul game from the soul series, but I see you also made it for kingdom hearts, and when you said it's the best series I pushed the subscribed video faster then flash.
Seriously, the only game I think that would truly confuse people would be Dream Drop Distance and that's the 6th installment into the series.Yes I understand back then since everyone couldn't get every system, but even now with the collection I see people getting confuse for mainly 2 reasons. The most common reason is that not many could remember some story elements. Usually it's either some people forget or didn't pay attention to certain events that happened. This part can't be help since not everyone have a good memory. The second reason is that most tend to over think things which leads to them getting confuse or more confuse than they were. It's best to just go with it and expect "turns" along the way. Overall though, I hope others would give the series a shot. Just tired of people making jokes about the "confusing" story which scares others from playing it.
MY EXACT OPINIONS ON THIS SITUATION I seriously feel like people just don't pay attention to what's going on and end up getting confused. Because really, I don't find any of these games confusing except DDD (just like you said). Instead of making a big deal of it and telling newcomers "don't play it its too confusing" I wish people would actually give it a try themselves and see if its confusing to themselves. But no one wants to do that because now the series has this "it's too confusing" stigma to it.

im suprised u didnt mention reading the journal in most of the games, sometimes they give nice tidbits or lets you review some information. but this is a very good way to help explain or show someone about this series
Also if you really can't be bothered playing a game and want a Let's Play by someone with no prior knowledge of the series NicoB has done a playthrough of pretty much all of the games (including 358/2 on the DS but edited to show the updated cutscenes) and his reactions are positive and genuine. He also shows off the extra content in the final mix versions so you don't miss out on any content
I’ve been with the series since kingdom hearts on the ps2, played every game that came out in order and still possess all the original games in their original boxes..... I’m totally not obsessed
so my bf is a huge kh buff and i never really understood anything of it, but have always found it interesting yet hard to approach, so this has actually helped a huge amount and will be picking up the first collection payday
Just two problems with this Buns. First and this is the big one. Back Cover is not a suitable replacement for Union X. Not at all. Back Cover is suplimentary material to better understand Union X. Yes, you need to know the story of the mobile game to actually know whats going on in Back Cover.To fully understand whts going on in the mobile game, jsut watch Everglow's Story videos. He did a wonderful job combining both Union X and Back Covers cutscenes into easily digestable understandable portions. I'd put a lnk, but i don't want to piss off buns. if you read this, maybe add it to the description :) Second. Release order is right, the menu for 1.5+2.5 is not. Sadly, they decided to keep the order of the games(movies in the PS4 collection the same as it was in the PS3 Collections. Watching 358 Days before KH2 will explain a few minor things in the first 3 hours, while ruining pretty much every reveal the game has, KH2 is not a game where your supposed to understand everything from the get go. Youre supposed to uncover its mysteries as youre playing it. The Days movie ruins that expierience by showing you material you were supposed to be allready familiar with.

I bought the 1.5+2.5 remix 3 weeks ago and I’ve beaten the first game and watched the cutscenes from chain of memories. I’ve started the second game and tbh so far I don’t see how it’s confusing

3:04 Fun fact playing Days before RE:CoM unlocks rare cards based in the other Organization members not in CoM. Xigbar, Roxas, Xion, Xemnas: all of them. This is a bonus if done this way because the story of Days starts before CoM. But if you play CoM before watching Days then you lose out in them forever. Apparently this is exclusive to the ps4 version for some reason. SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD, I DUNNO, add a little text box annotation correcting this during that segment if the video.
I noticed she essentially recommends two different playing orders in this video, while saying "do it this way" for both. Might be confusing to new people. I'd stick with the release order, definitely.
I got into the kingdom hearts this way just a month or two ago because of Buns, and I can honestly say that I loved the whole experience. There's a big hole in my heart now because of E M O T I O N, but other than that Kingdom Heart really is a great series.

I ,as a lot of people did, got into the series from KH2 and thought that the handheld games were spin-offs and thought that the story was confusing thinking that it was ,like in the souls/borne series, hidden in item descriptions or some other texts, but the HD collection made it clear that it's easy to follow and pretty much everything is laid out for the player. Can't wait for KH3
It's a giant mass of energy that serves as that heart of the universe. It looks like a Valentine's heart-shaped moon. It can be summoned by collecting a metric ton of hearts using a keyblade. Supposedly, it can also grant someone a wish if they can access it, but doing so risks exposing it to heartless that can consume it and effectively end the universe. There have been debates on what exactly it's made of, but the villains are convinced it's darkness while the heroes seem to believe it's made of light. Based on a twist in BBS, it may be possible for a particular type of keyblade (called the x-blade) to forcibly open the dimensional rift to kingdom hearts.
Rated T for Tony After reading the reports, I just see it as just a mass collection of hearts all combined into one (except the one in the Keyblade graveyard). KH1's Kingdom Hearts composed of the hearts of all the worlds Maleficent took over. KH2's consists of all the hearts the Organization gathered and hearts of the heartless Sora defeated. They are both considered "artificial" Kingdom Hearts. BBS's Kingdom Hearts is the "true" Kingdom Hearts that is unlocked with the X-Blade and is the one that Xehanort is after.

I got into Kingdom Hearts by watching a Let’s Play channel play it and they did the games in the right order so I got a freebie for this one and was converted into a die-hard Kingdom Hearts fan in only a few months
Not a new fan here, but a bit out of date, so this was extremely helpful. I knew some of the games had been re-released, but I didn't realize you could get ALMOST ALL OF THEM, + ALL THE STORY in two collections for the PS4. Saving up for a PS4 seems a bit more justified now. Hopefully I'll get to see KH3 for myself soon.
I want to say a big... VERY BIG thank you. I watched a ton o RUclips videos and read a lot of Wiki pages to understand the plot. And... when I watched YOUR video about it... welp... I wanna hug you and say a HUUUUUGE thanks. Now all I got to do is to buy a Playstation 4 and play- no, DROWN in these series by myself. Again, much thanks. :3
Just a few more tips for beginners: 1. When one talks about X(the web browser version) and X Unchained(the mobile version), they are both technically canon, with Unchained being a sort of sequel to the original. 2. Some game plots may require a second playthrough, just to make sure you can follow along. Looking at you, Dream Drop Distance. 3. While it may seem like a big rehash of the series, and, it kind of is, Re:coded introduces concepts and plot points that are important to the future of the series, especially when it comes to figuring out the plot of Unchained, of all things. 4. Be prepared for a lot of "Well actually..." moments, where what you learned from one game will be overwritten by another. Keep in mind, Nomura is at the wheel, and you have to ride with his hyperactive imagination to get close to understanding what is going on. 5. If all else fails, just go Sora, and nod your head at everything. Goodness knows thats how some of us can keep our sanity with this upside down, tilt-a-whirl style writing.
The one other thing i would suggest is once youve played through most of them, watch the secret ending, i think its called the missing files or something, that is somewhat important.

For anyone who may not know this, the PSN store has an All-In-One package that contains 1.5, 2.5, 2.8, a dynamic background theme and a pre-order for 3 for $100. Because I keep seeing the ads for “The Story So Far” for $40 and it didn’t look too much different that the All-In-One on the PSN store but if it is, feel free to politely correct me. Just trying to help people get the most bang for their buck if they can afford it.

No, to get the real Kingdom Hearts experience, you play Kingdom Hearts 1, then Kingdom Hearts 2, and then spend years being confused until you buckle down and finally play Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories.

No, to get the real experience, Square enix needs to stop peeing there pants and port the 'story so far' to the switch, that way, people can experience it other than home.

Honestly, when you really think about it, Xehanort is kinda similar to Voldemort in Harry potter. In order to reach his goal of spreading darkness around the worlds in KH, he's resorted to preserving parts of his soul into countless vessels (or bodies) in the form of Vanitas, Terra, the organization, even Riku etc. Whenever they become possessed by him and suddenly have his golden eyes. It's similar to how Voldemort uses a horcrux to preserve parts of his soul so he can always come back. Both Sora and Xehanort's philosophies are halfway right, they both either want the world to be consumed by darkness, or covered in light, when there's supposed to be a balance between the two.

Honestly, DDD was fine aside from the stupid time travel BS. Re:Coded's the one that irks me the most because it literally is the most worthless title in the series.
Introspectre It's not, though. Gameplay is fun as hell and has what has been considerably the best Command Deck system and combat is super fun, and the plot tells us that Maleficent and Pete know everything that happened while they were gone. It's also the first game to mention the Book of Prophecies and the Foretellers, as Unchained didn't come out on PC until 2012. So, no, I'd say it's pretty relevant.
Sorry, but it wasn’t just the self-contradictory time-travel, that was a problem with DDD, but also stuff like the narrative structure, how sleeping worlds work, dreams within dreams, nobodies having hearts, characters returning after their halves were killed, Xehanort showing up as Geezernort instead of Terranort, Lea inexplicably getting a keyblade, Sora somehow having a computer in his heart that has its own virtual world, the Country of the Musketeers just making us ask more questions about MDG, Minnie, and Pete, Dreameaters barely having anything to do with the plot, Dreameaters being effing tedious to create and level, and flowmotion being overly flashy and needlessly complicating combat and movement. A lot of other people also hate the drop system.
Dream Drop Sora gameplay fun as hell? Maybe if it had been released before KH2 and Birth by Sleep but in comparison, gameplay is not that fun and everything significant that happened could’ve been tied in with DDD or 0.2 instead. Felt too much like we were repeating KH1 for the 3rd time

Sorry i’m a little late to the comments. But y’all, this is very much correct. Buns has been helping me out with these games and i had been so reluctant for YEARS because of these misconceptions. But LORD. The story makes sense, it’s a lot, but it’s emotional, powerful, and i love every single character in their own way and I don’t regret it -at all- and wish i done it sooner. I’m on Birth by Sleep now and everything’s been so great and i cried like 7 times. I only did it because Buns wouldn’t let me not play it. And i appreciate it tbh, probably the only RPG series i’ve truly appreciated.

Mirmisian I’ll admit, I remember the card battle system was a pain in the ass when I played it on the Gameboy Advance years ago.
Like, I get the need to change things up, but that obviously wasn’t the right way to do it based on the poor sales.
Megan Rowell I haven’t played the gba release but the ps4 one I have and I really enjoyed the card system. By looking at some people play the game I noticed no one cares about combos and zeros. People are hitting enemies with zero cost attack cards instead of keeping it and using it to card break. Also combos are so fun! By combos I mean using 3 cards at the same time to use one more powerful attack(Ars arcanum, mega flare, omnislash,etc.)
How are you now? Did you finish everything?
The card system in my opinion makes the gameplay confusing and I’d rather watch the cutscenes to be honest... but if you like it that’s totally fine

Every now and then, my mind drifts back to the first time I heard about KH. It was 2002, I had finished playing FFVIII recently and was reading a magazine with an article about the game. It mentioned a boy fighting shadow creatures with a giant key alongside Disney and FF characters and had a picture with a giant heart moon in the background. I thought "That sounds stupid" and moved on to the next article, but the concept and the game's cover art stuck with me.
About a year later our family got a PS2 and my sister and I got to pick a game each to go along with it. I eventually picked FFX for myself, but she ended up picking KH because she was more open about liking Disney movies than what I was at the time. It didn't take long for us to fall in love with both games.
What gets me more than anything is knowing that millions of people probably had that exact same impression of the game and how it is both absolutely right and wrong at the same time. KH is unapologetically stupid, but because it fully commits to its ideas with fun gameplay, great music, inventive world design, making you feel as you're playing through various Disney movies, and just the right amount of anime melodrama it manages to pull it off into a weird, charming, and ultimately memorable package.
I grow up with KH. I played it since I am 10 years old and because of that I never found it stupid ore weird like at all. Everyone is like "Disney and Final Fantasy what a wierd mix. How does it work so well?" and fore me it is completely normal. What is stupid ore weird about it? That he uses a Key as a weapon? I have seen Characters uses tattoos, a brush, masks, haire and other stuff as weapons. The Key I found not really stupid. Unrealistic but not stupid. Its fantasy after all. Yeah ok some of the writing is stupid. I dont argue with that.
I had a similar experience. I saw an add for KH1 in a magazine right before it came out and thought it looked stupid. Two years later, I won the original Chain of Memories as a prize at Dave & Buster’s, and absolutely fell in love. To this day, it’s my favorite franchise of all time, be it game, movie, or book.
Sofaris SAME!!! Since I grew up with KH, I can never relate with people who say that's its a strange mix-up. It's completely normal to me. I'll admit I always thought the Key was a weird weapon as a kid though lol.
When I was in my edgy mid teens, I thought kingdom hearts was the lamest shit cause the Disney part but a few months ago I decided to stop being a damn grinch (also a little push from a friend who likes the games) and pick up the ps4 collection and I love it! I think the Disney part is what throws a lot of people off

My friends wanted me to get into Kingdom Hearts for a while, but part of the reason I actually started was honestly because of these videos. There was just so much passion thrown into them that they made me wanna see what all the fuss was about.
And here I am. I’ve played every KH game on the PS4, watched all the movies and I’m prepped for KH3. I must say, the “Kingdom Hearts Pain Train” is an accurate term, but thanks Buns for pushing me to get into this series. I pull my hair out because of it but I’ve grown to love it.

i honestly cant get kingdom hearts, the final fantasy and disney aesthetics are too disjointed and jarring for me, but its endearing to see such a passionate and dedicated fanbase, so you guys keep doing what youre doing and i wish the best of luck

I never understood how KH could be considered confusing. Characters flat out explain what's going on in nearly every scene with 45 minute monologues. It couldn't be less subtle unless Nomura just held up a sign in the bottom corner of the screen with plot details.

Kingdom Hearts is the very first game I think I truly got into that wasn't Pokémon: my stepdad gifted me it and a PS2 for Christmas one year and I went from "ehh I like Pokémon but I'm not really into playing games" to "I love videogames oh my god" and no matter how old I get and how my tastes have changed, I can't stop appreciating Kingdom Hearts for getting me into the world of videogames

I honestly don't find it that hard to understand, but man is it a BITCH to explain.
The first Kingdom Hearts game I played was KHII and even if I was a bit confused, I enjoyed the gameplay very much. Then I tried playing the first one and I couldn't get past Wonderland because I was 10 and stupid, wasn't as good in English as now, and walkthrough wasn't a thing back then. Now 22, I decided to buy a PS4 to relieve stress from university and tried playing all the games again after seeing your other for beginners videos and you know what Buns? I'm in love. This series brought me on a truly magical journey. It's emotional and tragic, but also very beautiful. It's not perfect and I can see plotholes in many places, but I really hold it dear to my heart so thank you for that :)

Same here. To be honest back in the day I didn't even realize in the logo there was a II sign that meant 2. I just assumed it was a standalone game and got confused af when I started playing
Wayneisboss I had been introduced to the series by a friend who one day just pulled out a few games she had and I ended up playing just beginning portion fighting the Ff characters and getting the stuff for the raft. I thought it was fun but kinda forgot about it until one day we were doing some Christmas shopping and I saw kh 2 and I asked my mom to get it for me (I didn't know at the time that it was kh 2 since I only knew about kh 1).

I had KH 1, 2, Chain of Memories, AND Re: Chain of Memories as a kid but never beat any of them! After 29 hours I FINALLY beat KHFM and started working on CoM! I can't think about anything else, this series has literally taken over my life! I bought Sora's Crown necklace and a keyblade necklace and I'm so in love with the series!

I actually have to agree, as someone who went back and watched Days before playing II Final Mix after not having played II in years. II has a LOT more weight to it after watching the Days movie, and the mystery of who Roxas is does not make up for it. There are significant cutscenes added in Final Mix that were absent from the original and fully expect the player to have watched Days as context. It’s a much more emotional roller coaster ride than I ever remember the original II being.

Keyteck 120 You mean his final smash? I actually had a crazy idea. You know how Ryu was given two final smashes? How about we give Sora 2 final smashes based on his costume? I was going to suggest four costumes for Sora and 4 more for Roxas, with Final Form and limit break respectively, but the new smash is getting rid of transformations, so instead; Sora gets the Trinity attack, holding his keyblade high and a massive light goes out attacking everyone around him, (no Donald or goofy though, they shouldn't make any appearance whatsoever, that way we can avoid Disney interference and keep smash bros a video game characters only game), and we can still give Roxas his limit break, but he is uncontrollable and sends massive pillars of light everywhere to launch everyone it hits, just like in his boss fight in KH2 Final Mix. Also, I would change the keyblade to the Star Seeker, OathKeeper, or Ultima Weapon, since the Kingdom Key has the Mickey Mouse icon on the keychain.

Dunno if you'll see this, but I figured this would be the best spot to make this.
I wasn't a fan of Kingdom Hearts before watching your videos. I played 1 and 2, but could never finish them. I could never get the gameplay right, and after so many games came out, it seemed too daunting.
But because of these videos you make (along with current circumstances), I decided to dive headfirst and play the series from beginning to end. Currently, I am starting my playthrough of KH3, right after finishing 0.2 Birth By Sleep.
And I have you to thank for that. Your Beginner's Guides, plus your other videos, helped me jumpstart the long journey.

I started watching your videos a few days ago when you talked about the hardest soul game from the soul series, but I see you also made it for kingdom hearts, and when you said it's the best series I pushed the subscribed video faster then flash.
Seriously, the only game I think that would truly confuse people would be Dream Drop Distance and that's the 6th installment into the series.Yes I understand back then since everyone couldn't get every system, but even now with the collection I see people getting confuse for mainly 2 reasons.
The most common reason is that not many could remember some story elements. Usually it's either some people forget or didn't pay attention to certain events that happened. This part can't be help since not everyone have a good memory.
The second reason is that most tend to over think things which leads to them getting confuse or more confuse than they were. It's best to just go with it and expect "turns" along the way.
Overall though, I hope others would give the series a shot. Just tired of people making jokes about the "confusing" story which scares others from playing it.
MY EXACT OPINIONS ON THIS SITUATION I seriously feel like people just don't pay attention to what's going on and end up getting confused. Because really, I don't find any of these games confusing except DDD (just like you said). Instead of making a big deal of it and telling newcomers "don't play it its too confusing" I wish people would actually give it a try themselves and see if its confusing to themselves. But no one wants to do that because now the series has this "it's too confusing" stigma to it.
gamerprince1999 It's the thing I hear the most nowdays. Though, judging from what I've seen most people get confused when talking about light and darkness.
JJDude They could literally say Good instead of Light and Bad instead of Darkness and *poof* all your problems gone. Maybe even Bee works
im suprised u didnt mention reading the journal in most of the games, sometimes they give nice tidbits or lets you review some information. but this is a very good way to help explain or show someone about this series
Also if you really can't be bothered playing a game and want a Let's Play by someone with no prior knowledge of the series NicoB has done a playthrough of pretty much all of the games (including 358/2 on the DS but edited to show the updated cutscenes) and his reactions are positive and genuine. He also shows off the extra content in the final mix versions so you don't miss out on any content

I’ve been with the series since kingdom hearts on the ps2, played every game that came out in order and still possess all the original games in their original boxes..... I’m totally not obsessed

so my bf is a huge kh buff and i never really understood anything of it, but have always found it interesting yet hard to approach, so this has actually helped a huge amount and will be picking up the first collection payday
Just two problems with this Buns.
First and this is the big one. Back Cover is not a suitable replacement for Union X. Not at all. Back Cover is suplimentary material to better understand Union X. Yes, you need to know the story of the mobile game to actually know whats going on in Back Cover.To fully understand whts going on in the mobile game, jsut watch Everglow's Story videos. He did a wonderful job combining both Union X and Back Covers cutscenes into easily digestable understandable portions. I'd put a lnk, but i don't want to piss off buns. if you read this, maybe add it to the description :)
Second. Release order is right, the menu for 1.5+2.5 is not.
Sadly, they decided to keep the order of the games(movies in the PS4 collection the same as it was in the PS3 Collections. Watching 358 Days before KH2 will explain a few minor things in the first 3 hours, while ruining pretty much every reveal the game has, KH2 is not a game where your supposed to understand everything from the get go.
Youre supposed to uncover its mysteries as youre playing it.
The Days movie ruins that expierience by showing you material you were supposed to be allready familiar with.

Thank you so much for making this video! Whenever I try to get my friends and others to understand and play KH they always end up being more confused or just not want to play it. Now next time I start freaking out when a person tells me they have never played a KH game before and are planning to jump straight into KH3 I can calmly direct them to this video, so thank you!

I got into this near the end of the summer of 2018, I have no idea how Iearned so much in such little time.
I bought the 1.5+2.5 remix 3 weeks ago and I’ve beaten the first game and watched the cutscenes from chain of memories. I’ve started the second game and tbh so far I don’t see how it’s confusing

Fun fact playing Days before RE:CoM unlocks rare cards based in the other Organization members not in CoM. Xigbar, Roxas, Xion, Xemnas: all of them. This is a bonus if done this way because the story of Days starts before CoM. But if you play CoM before watching Days then you lose out in them forever.
Apparently this is exclusive to the ps4 version for some reason. SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD, I DUNNO, add a little text box annotation correcting this during that segment if the video.

I noticed she essentially recommends two different playing orders in this video, while saying "do it this way" for both. Might be confusing to new people.

I got into the kingdom hearts this way just a month or two ago because of Buns, and I can honestly say that I loved the whole experience. There's a big hole in my heart now because of E M O T I O N, but other than that Kingdom Heart really is a great series.

I ,as a lot of people did, got into the series from KH2 and thought that the handheld games were spin-offs and thought that the story was confusing thinking that it was ,like in the souls/borne series, hidden in item descriptions or some other texts, but the HD collection made it clear that it's easy to follow and pretty much everything is laid out for the player. Can't wait for KH3

Its the giant heart thingy in the sky that gives anyone ultimate demon power when awakened.
It's a giant mass of energy that serves as that heart of the universe. It looks like a Valentine's heart-shaped moon. It can be summoned by collecting a metric ton of hearts using a keyblade. Supposedly, it can also grant someone a wish if they can access it, but doing so risks exposing it to heartless that can consume it and effectively end the universe. There have been debates on what exactly it's made of, but the villains are convinced it's darkness while the heroes seem to believe it's made of light. Based on a twist in BBS, it may be possible for a particular type of keyblade (called the x-blade) to forcibly open the dimensional rift to kingdom hearts.
Rated T for Tony After reading the reports, I just see it as just a mass collection of hearts all combined into one (except the one in the Keyblade graveyard).
KH1's Kingdom Hearts composed of the hearts of all the worlds Maleficent took over. KH2's consists of all the hearts the Organization gathered and hearts of the heartless Sora defeated. They are both considered "artificial" Kingdom Hearts.
BBS's Kingdom Hearts is the "true" Kingdom Hearts that is unlocked with the X-Blade and is the one that Xehanort is after.
The better question is, what's in the black box?

the final mixes on ps4 is a godsend. As a kid I only had a gameboy and loved chain of memories but had not idea what was going on.
I got into Kingdom Hearts by watching a Let’s Play channel play it and they did the games in the right order so I got a freebie for this one and was converted into a die-hard Kingdom Hearts fan in only a few months
Not a new fan here, but a bit out of date, so this was extremely helpful. I knew some of the games had been re-released, but I didn't realize you could get ALMOST ALL OF THEM, + ALL THE STORY in two collections for the PS4.
Saving up for a PS4 seems a bit more justified now.
Hopefully I'll get to see KH3 for myself soon.
I want to say a big... VERY BIG thank you. I watched a ton o RUclips videos and read a lot of Wiki pages to understand the plot. And... when I watched YOUR video about it... welp... I wanna hug you and say a HUUUUUGE thanks. Now all I got to do is to buy a Playstation 4 and play- no, DROWN in these series by myself. Again, much thanks. :3
Just a few more tips for beginners:
1. When one talks about X(the web browser version) and X Unchained(the mobile version), they are both technically canon, with Unchained being a sort of sequel to the original.
2. Some game plots may require a second playthrough, just to make sure you can follow along. Looking at you, Dream Drop Distance.
3. While it may seem like a big rehash of the series, and, it kind of is, Re:coded introduces concepts and plot points that are important to the future of the series, especially when it comes to figuring out the plot of Unchained, of all things.
4. Be prepared for a lot of "Well actually..." moments, where what you learned from one game will be overwritten by another. Keep in mind, Nomura is at the wheel, and you have to ride with his hyperactive imagination to get close to understanding what is going on.
5. If all else fails, just go Sora, and nod your head at everything. Goodness knows thats how some of us can keep our sanity with this upside down, tilt-a-whirl style writing.
The one other thing i would suggest is once youve played through most of them, watch the secret ending, i think its called the missing files or something, that is somewhat important.
