I come for the comfort, the calming food clips, the cozy cats, the top tier book talk.. but I STAY for the friendship! Why do I feel like ally would be the sweetest person to befriend. love love love these videos 🥺
to answer the question you posed at the very end of the video: I feel like Japanese literature is uniquely good at invoking the "snapshots of mundanity" feeling that you described. some of my favs are Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata, The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa, The Forest of Wool and Steel by Natsu Miyashita, and Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa.
“The internet said this was very different from the others”
LIES! 😂
My favourite character study is 'A Gentleman in Moscow' - the setting literally doesn't change for 90% of the book yet it managed to grip my attention all the way through. Happy reading!
Yay, love the video!! Ally said she's always trying to be thoughtful about her ratings because folks come by this channel to figure out what to read. Tru, guilty as charged. The ratings are helpful, but even better are her strong explanations of the rating, even if it was just "I couldn't get into it! Sue me!" I'm reading "This is How You Lose the Time War" now, which I never would have known about if Ally hadn't reviewed it. She hated it! But explained why she hated it, and I knew I'd love it. Thanks for taking us on your reading journey, Ally! It's so fun and helpful
my all time favorite book is perks of being a wallflower, which is a character study imo. While not much happens, Charlie is one of the most readable characters and being inside his head and the way he sees the world is such a heart wrenching yet comforting experience
this thumbnail and title is already such a mood
here for the lil banana bread montage
so many chapters in Braiding Sweetgrass made me really emotional. not very many books can make me cry but this one did. Kimmerer is brilliant
the cat bookmark OMG
the bookmarks 🤩
snails!!!!!!!!
The Neopolitan novels by Elena Ferrante a thousand times over. Simply the best, most complex character study I’ve ever read. I would never be able to describe my own relationships with such nuance and insight but I relate so much to the humanity of every character. The novels are not plot heavy, although a lot does happen in their lives, but more exploratory about the way her characters are formed by and through their environment (post-war, politically unstable, impoverished Naples). The HBO series based on the novels is also impeccable!
Also I agree completely with you about BWWAY! Parts of it I thought were very sharp and poignant while I was reading, but was not invested in the characters and really have not thought about it at all since then.
I’m currently reading Piranesi by Susanna Clark and Know My Name by Chanel Miller. Both are extremely good so far. I read Beautiful World in January and thought it was spot on for my feelings as a 29 year old as well. Eileen’s character is me in a nutshell for sure. Don’t want to babble too much. Thanks for the video love it.
Ooh I loved both Piranesi & Know My Name. I was able to relate so much to Chanel, as a recent college grad at 23. But also because she's such a skilled writer
For a “mundane” book I would have to say Mrs. Dalloway. I think this might be the OG book in English in this genre but it’s the book I use as my comparison
i loved BWWAY but gave normal people and CWF 3 and 2 stars respectively so my relationship with sally rooney is rocky to say the least!! my favourite character study in recent years has been everyone in this room will someday be dead by emily austin. it felt like scoped my brain out, inspected it and wrote a book about it. it really explores mental health, grief & loneliness with a lot of tenderness!!
My favorite Sally Rooney is definitely conversations with friends, normal people was good but not as influential for me. And Beautiful World Where are You is on my tbr!
Witers and Lovers by Lily King. Absolutely loved it. Its following a writer who just lost her mother and is in between two phases of her life. I am always thinking about this book and this character. I HIGHLY recommend it. I feel like you’d enjoy.
You’re almost at 20 THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS!! How exciting!! Congrats!!!
I have to say your videos have the coziest feel. Also the crunching noises as you ate were so satisfying
Bless your soul for dropping that banana bread recipe in the description
Anything Haruki Murakami. Usually not about anything in particular, but ends up being about everything.
Alli, you’re so amazing! Absolutely love your videos and all of your content and lifestyle. Seeing you happy, makes me happy. Continue shining and taking care of yourself!
As a portuguese and big fan of yours, I'm so glad you're reading José Saramago (even if you didn't enjoy it)!
“thriving, moisturized, in my lane” yes somebody stitch that on a pillow cause that’s the life motto we should follow
Expectation by Anna Hope is blurbed as Sally Rooney-esque but focused on female friendships and it was soooo much more enjoyable for me than the Rooney I’ve read. Plus, a bonus, it has quotation marks for dialogue!
Completely with you on 'Beautiful World'. I would've read a book exclusively made of their emails back and forth
your videos keep getting better and better 😭♥️
I'm always lost when I read José Saramago. Like 85% of the times I'm like: "oh so we are on a dialog now, okay...Okay now were not...what how are the transitions so smooth...why am I on a dialog again...how?!". That man only knew dots and commas. That it 🤣
See the ideas and moments in Beautiful World draw me in, but I am similar to you I find she falls in the middle a lot. I might pick it up...I might give it a go.
Another video? What a treat!
This is one of my favorite Sally rooney novel. As a fast reader, I rlly take my time and rlly focus on her books because if I do so, her books tend to be better. This book to me was like a intimate friend that just wanted to talk to me for a while and I rlly appreciated it for that reason.
(Also fun fact in Japanese and most Asian cultures, sticking chopsticks upwards in a bowl of rice is bad luck because its a symbol of death :^)
My favorite "mundane snap shot of reality" book is After Dark by Haruki Murakami (it's also one of my favorite books of all time). One could argue it's not entirely mundane since there's some light magical realism elements to it, but it really is just following some people in a city after dark and nothing really "happens" but it's very captivating nonetheless.
That thumbnail just sends me every time I see it 😂
I recently read “The Summer Book” by Tove Jansson. It was pretty good, quiet, slow and beautifully mundane. Highly recommend it! ❤️
I have to remind myself every now and then that a 3-star rating is not a bad thing! It means middle ground. Not bad, but just not a favorite. My favorite slow, mundane books are one’s you’ve recommended. How Do You Live?, Lonely Castle in the Mirror, and Braiding Sweetgrass have all given me that feeling of finding value in slow living.
just came across your channel (and im absolutely in love with your editing style and ur personality omg) AND UR READING SARAMAGO IN THIS VIDEO!! im a portuguese gurlie and we love the man over here :) He's reallyyy hard to read even for us but im happy to see some representation on booktube!
I am in the middle of a few books as well! Sooley by John Grisham (really loving this one), Mort by Terry Pratchett (Love a light, funny, and absurd scifi novel), and I'm working slowly through Unwell Women (hard to read a lot of at a time because it makes me very angry and also sad, but it is really good and informative nonetheless). I've not read any Sally Rooney but watching you talk about her and her books makes me want to!
Robin Wall Kimmerer narrates her own audio book! And it is the most soothing marvelous listen 💚
Writers and Lovers is my favorite mundane book but also dare I say my favorite book of all time. I have a hard time describing why this book touched my soul so deeply. But if I could force you to read one book it would be that because I do genuinely think you would enjoy it.
i actually really loved convos with friends for some reason, i think i related to the endles stream of inner dialogue
Right now I’m also reading braiding sweet grass! I saw you were reading it on story graph and felt inspired to pick it up. My favorite part so far was when she spoke about the native language and the look at the world that is implied by it.
I am also reading Fifty Sounds by Polly Barton and it’s probably one of the best non fiction texts I’ve ever come across. It’s essays about living abroad and learning a foreign language and never being 100% fluent and it’s just oh so very relatable. Might be interesting for you as well.
As far as character studies go, I recommend The housekeeper and the professor, Snowflake, Goodbye Vitamin and lastly the ultimate character study: The most fun we ever had. The last one kind of traces an entire family including their four daughters over the span of their life and it is truly the best depiction of sibling and parents/children relationships I’ve ever read. Hope these suggestions make their way onto your tbr 💕
I came for the ~vibes~
and as always they were delivered 😌✨
Working from home has so warped my feelings on convenience foods. When I was in the office , I’d buy those myself. But hearing you read that, skeeved me out.
Omg i love Kirstea! I’m really looking forward to reading this book 🥰
Such a quality content! I'm so glad that I found your channel ( lovedddd your new hairstyle)
Gotta say that I would def watch hours of "study with me" videos produced by you :) Maybe an idea for a couple (or more) videos during the upcoming semester craziness?
I think I just binge-watched all your videos, and you make such fun and interesting content. Your videos are just next level, you definitely deserve more exposure, viewers and love. You're great!🧡 Can't wait for your next videos!!
My favorite mundane book is Stoner by John Williams. It had a huge impact on me in terms of accepting the purposelessness of life. Also, had kind of forgotten about Sally Rooney for a minute there, not gonna lie, but your video reminded me I haven't read this one yet, so thank you! Excited for Kristy's video as well!
i am a little over halfway into BWWAY and i’m finding that while i didn’t used to vibe with character studies, i’m definitely converting. one i read recently that fulfills your life snapshot ask is transcendent kingdom! not sure if you’ve read it, i gave it 5 ⭐️. also i want to know your thoughts on mary oliver’s poetry and essays!
Those intro food chronches is your inner ASMRtist coming out
I think you‘d enjoy „The Wall“ by Marlen Haushofer. It’s a little mundane, little scary, empowering and humbling at the same time and lots of nature and cozy vibes
Arguably I'm not super into character studies but! last year I read 2 around the same time and really enjoyed them: Writers & Lovers by Lily King and Tin Man by Sarah Winman. I highly recommend both but trigger warning in both cases for grief over the death of a loved one
my favorite mundane book/snapshot of reality is A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. it is heartbreaking and profound in a small, intimate way.
your videos are the definition of comfort
🐌🌿
I dnf blindness, to many triggers and it just reminded me off everything that was happening in my country … 😔
Sally Rooney books always remind me of the show Girls, I watched that show for a long time even though I hated most of the characters and their actions.
✨Thriving, Moisturized, In my Lane✨ should be on a shirt! I love it!!
Blindness was one of the most unsettling books I've read in my life, i loved it. Because I speak portuguese i was able to read the original and aaaaaah, the man is a genius, however it is a bitch to get through his writing I'm not gonna lie. What helped me was being in a book club that had podcasts for each chapter.
If i may rec you Brazilian writers i love i think you'd like Machado de Assis and Lígia Fagundes Telles, they're my favorites!
Your videos make my heart so warm! Thank you!!
last year i decided to get back into reading again and conversations with friends was the first book i read bc of all the great things ive heard abt miss rooney and well... i think it was the wrong choice BUT it did get me back into reading again so i gave it 3 stars lmao i just finished reading pizza girl by jean kyoung frazier earlier and gave it 4 stars!!! thank u for another warm video ally !!!
I was truly eating up all the emails in BWWAY, but all the sex scenes made me want to SCREAM
I am MAD sensitive to sesame seeds & cannot eat them anymore if I don't want to be in abdominal pain for days so please enjoy yours a little extra for me 😊
Ahh Blindness! I saw the movie first (really unsettling and thought provoking) and have thought about picking the books as well
the fact you have a paperback makes me so sad because i has to bring the damn hardback everywhere
the BAKING 😌😌😌
blindness really do be a hot mess but
all three books a once while baking, a multitasking queen
AND SOUP
allisoncookingchannel next please
I LOVED reading Normal People by Rooney (also kinda liked conversations w friends) but when I tried to read Beautiful World I just had to DNF it… it seems to deal with stuff that I have a genuine passion for, especially climate change and climate anxiety, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into it.. But I’m so happy to hear your thoughts on it! Maybe I should try to pick it up again 🥰
My recommendation for a mundane snapshot book is Ghosts by Dolly Alderton. It deals with similar topics to Sally Rooney's books but is easier to read. Thanks for making such great videos btw!
i think a book that is somewhat similar to Sally Rooney’s books that feels like a character study and that I like better is Days of Distraction by Alexandra Chang. i haven’t seen enough people online talk about this book for how much it delves deep into topics of race and isolation. really really good 👍
Ok wait but will you tell us more about the snails? (8:47) haha I loved them. What's their deal? Do they live near your home? In your home? How are they?
i luv ur videos so much ~
Im currently reading In the Name of Salome by Julia Alvarez. I wanted to read braiding sweetgrass too, my sister is reading it and she keeps crying too 😭
José Saramago is a slog to get through because of the lack of punctuation. I had a mandatory reading here in Portugal of one of his work (Baltasar and Blimunda) which I didn't enjoy in general, but i heard Blindness was a engaging story!
I've read blindness and loved it
all the meals you make always look so tasty 😋
Loved your intermittent munching 💜
constantly dehydrated gang RISE (jk don’t we’ll probs pass out)
agreed the emails are absolutely the best part of BWWAY!
hilary duff and natalie imbruglia references thank u for feeding us
to me i love the way sally rooney kind of skims the surface as you said bc it’s a constant underlying thing that to me captures the anxiety of living with the economic and environmental issues of our generation! but i totally get why it might be boring or substanceless to other readers!! loved your thoughts on this one
felt the same way about the book - definitely related a lot to Eileen, down to the editorial assistant job but overall felt very vignettey and some of the musings on oppression felt a little white (to me as a south asian). also is your ending song from the harry potter pc game soundtrack?!?
it is!!! good ears.
i think a good snapshot of reality/the mundane is the new me by halle butler i read it last year and it made me sad lol but not in a bad way
Ally honestly... you make my Sundays extra cozy and chill! Also, I'm reading Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwoord for my literature class and I think you might like it :) xx
I just started Normal People, because Leena Norms raved about it. I find it deeply upsetting, because I'm very allergic to characters who just do not communicate, but she just writes them so civincingly - don't know what to think yet, but it's also a page-turner? aaaaaahhhh
"allergic to characters that do not communicate" omg spot on
I recommend Tin Man by Sarah Winman for a bittersweet slice of life but one that also reminds me of Frederik Backman (please read him, too!). Would love to know your thoughts on both :)
For Backman I recommend Anxious People and A Man Called Ove!
noo i thought the emails were SO PRETENTIOUS
they definitely lost me towards the end a lot - too much bronze age talk
Normal People became a modern favorite for me. Then I was bored outta my mind by Conversations With Friends. So I needed a timeout before tackling another. 😆
Yes ally posted a video 💃🏻
I feel exactly the same way about Sally Rooney's writing! I love books that are no plot just grey characters and vibes, but her books just don't do it for me. id definitely recommend Acts of Desperation by Megan Nolan. to me, it felt like how other people describe feeling about Sally Rooney.
I’m in such a drought with reading! Wishing I had your motivation, fascination, and diligence with books right now. I used to enjoy reading, but it’s such a chore right now. How do you get out of reading slumps?
it's important to read books that really pique your interest! maybe find something short and fun just to get that feeling of success when you finish it. but i think it's also important to allow yourself to feel not in the mood. we can't all be "on" with all of our interests at all times.
Still not sure i understnd the hype surrounding sally rooney I read normal people a couple years ago and just didn't enjoy it honestly maybe one day i'll give her work another chance haha x
For a mundane book, I would say Indians on Vacation. It was a little aimless but relatable and funny sometimes. Despite being a slow read, I finished it fairly quickly and… I didn’t not like it. (I normally read thrillers so this was a much different read for me)
your link for your storygraph doesnt seem to work? i was just wondering what your username was so i could look you up
ah! thanks for letting me know. it's "allisonpaiges"
ally i really think you woudl enjoy everyone in this room will someday be dead by emily austin; its my favorite mundane with some sort of plot book i read last year whilst also being incredibly relateable and easy to read (:
I'm reading Normal people atm
💜💜💜
2 min ago omg!! also i just finished all of sally rooney’s books and i enjoyed them so hoping you like it too :)
your videos are THERAPY
I tried reading normal people but felt so frustrated with the lack of quotations so i dnfed if
so beyond fair imo
Haha early>:)
