I never thought I'd hear a band cover a wire song and not butcher it, These guys have done brilliant job of covering and personalizing without ruin. Top bananas cover.
R.E.M covered a Wire Song on their Document album and definitely didn’t butcher it. I actually don’t think this is a good cover. It’s too fuzzy. It kinda blows compared to the original
This is what happens when one fabulously creative bunch of people take on a track made by other equally creative people. What a lovely re-make. I listen to this a lot and love it.
ive been coming back to listen to this since i was like 16 years old. I will never get tired of the original song and I’ll especially never get sick of this cover. like… wow
this cover has elevated itself within the span of a week to be one of my favourite mbv songs ever - one of the rare instances of kevin and billinda singing, the unique texture provided by the meatball and the standard fuzz to be expected gives this song a tinge of nostalgia thats personal to me - its a feeling of the 2000s that i can only view through a special lens that only comes to life by something like this song. pretty sure the only thing that has replicated this feeling has been vdc by sweet trip, which is a testament to how this has affected me
I was sort of exposed to Wire quite early. My dad's longterm girlfriend of the past thirty years used to date the singer(?) from Wire. So there was always a tongue-in-cheek antipathy towards Wire when I was at my dad's place. Never really fell for them the way others do. I like Dot/Dash though.
Thank you again*My Bloody Valentine* I adore all your music. Seems like 4 ever now. I had no idea you made a comeback. Ta- * Wire* always makes me laugh with *CHORUS* 79 all the way! Pure joy every time I hear this version * Kevin Shields* straight back from Mars after covering this master. Cheers
Definitive cover. My bloody valentine surpasses the boundaries of the original. The wall of sound created by Kevin Shields is simply awesome. The angelical voice of Bilinda Butcher too. Simply amazing. My bloody valentine=revolution in pop culture music.
I wouldnt go so far as to say it surpasses. A ton of credit go to the original writers I'd say. Also there's a mixture of edge and beautiful softness in the original which has been somewhat muted here. This is definitely an amazing cover however. (Im both a huge MBV and Wire fan. :)
Whoa... take it down a notch, ace. This is a good attempt at covering what is basically an uncoverable band, but “surpasses The boundaries of the original” is stretching things WAY beyond the truth. It’s a decent cover. Just leave it at that.
i became addicted to this song.. my gawd.. brilliant i wonder why it is kept in the shadow.. if mbv from all the bands in the world decided to do a cover from wire its because wire is a MUST on the history of rock. thats my opinion
MBV never released this on an album, it was recorded after Loveless, but you can find the track on "Whore: A Tribute to Wire", which is a compilation of a load of bands covering Wire songs :)
MBV I just had heard things about that made me feel I had to listen to them, but finally didn't succeed to bring myself to do so. That Map ref cover changes the whole landscape. Among other reasons is the Meatball box used as a complete new instrument in itself and cleaverly mixed with the rest of the band, bringing simply our brains to a boil...
My favorite shoegazing band covering one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite post-punk bands. SWEET! (if only MBV could write anything post-Loveless half this good!)
Heard this when it came out on KXLU, in Los Angeles. Bought it on the trib comp (which has got some good ones on it.) Big time favorite. Thanks for posting!!!!
i wish i could take credit for it, but it's not my cover, it's done by the band My Bloody Valentine. it's relatively hard to find song so i just uploaded it here.
I have to agree. I like this cover, but I LOVE the original. While I like the sonic space the cover creates, I prefer Colin's vocal delivery and the ebb and flow of the energy in that song, as opposed to the more hypnotic drive of this one. But good cover, and classic MBV sound.
At least it has an official release, though. It's from a wire compilation. The album is on amazon for close to thirty dollars, and it has some other cool songs on there too, I'm thinking about getting it.
@enossified yeah, the vowel-y wobbling sound on one of the guitars is the meatball. you can see his settings for it on those pics of his current live setup, his pedal has the markings on it.
I totally thought my CD was warped, also-- they gave me another copy at Virgin Megastorez that sounded the same, so I shut up and just listened (for the past 20-odd years).., their unique sound slowly grows on you =)
i've been reading about this spot since this song popped in my head and you're the first person i've seen make that reference, thank you.. that's all i've been thinking. churches... churches...
The rare cover that improves upon the original. Though Wire has them beat as far as pure inventiveness (MBV is basically a great pop group with a few neat production tricks) but Butcher/Shields have vocals better suited to this than Newman's, shall we say, whine. Of course, that whine pushes a number of Wire songs into the greatness category. Great bands both
"(MBV is basically a great pop group with a few neat production tricks)" Hmm. That's a bit reductionist. You can describe Wire in a similar way: a good three minute pop song band with some pretentious song titles. It's a question of emphasis - I'm not even saying you're wrong, at least not with Loveless-era MBV, which is 'just' a brilliant album of tunes with a lot of distortion and fuzz. But another person might emphasise how utterly unearthly a piece like No More Sorry sounded at the time and still sounds to this day, how Isn't Anything and Loveless completely shifted the landscape of indie rock in Britain for good.
check out Ladytron by Roxy Music, if you cant find the original Old Grey Whistle Test video which was pulled. Serious Phil Manzanera meatball (and cheeseball...) on that one.
Don't wanna be fooled, this is about UK, WalesIREland; or WirE835 warner serial numbering. Hope you do't mind me joking, I have cd of Pink Flag though this track not included. 12 merry Xmas U!
When I first bought Loveless in the 90s I thought my CD was warped. Little did I know...
my dad told me the same thing
Haha facts
I literally took the tape out of my girlfriend’s stereo the first play because I thought it was eating the tape

This is what happens when one fabulously creative bunch of people take on a track made by other equally creative people. What a lovely re-make. I listen to this a lot and love it.
This is one of the only MBV tracks with their classic "Loveless" sounds where the singing is really clear and even actually quite emotional!
lol, so true.
i think so
an insanely good cover. just wild that this even aligned to happen in the first place.
My God this is good. Those MBV vocals make anything sound like a dream.
Might as well have invited Barrett to sing on this and make it the cover of the century !!!
ive been coming back to listen to this since i was like 16 years old. I will never get tired of the original song and I’ll especially never get sick of this cover. like… wow

mate, same. I could listen to the last minute of Bilinda and Kevin singing forever.
I'm a huge Wire fan and this is a pretty good cover. Love the heavy fuzz.
same 🙏
I was sort of exposed to Wire quite early. My dad's longterm girlfriend of the past thirty years used to date the singer(?) from Wire. So there was always a tongue-in-cheek antipathy towards Wire when I was at my dad's place.

Reminds me of Stereolab, with that plodding hypnotic pace..
It reminds me of two better bands, one who wrote it, and one who covered it. Nothing else.
that's cos tim gane loves that motorik drum beat fam
Stereolab got that beat from Neu
motorik-esque
stereolab meets the cowsills
A favorite Wire song of mine and this is a fine cover.
this rules so hard
MBV is the perfect band to cover this song. Awesome.
I've listened to this at least 5 times a day for about a week, thanks so much for uploading.
One of the cover versions of the 20th century, shatteringly good

Great cover. I wish they actually made that Wire tribute album, because Wire's one of my favourite bands.

i wonder why it is kept in the shadow..
if mbv from all the bands in the world decided to do a cover from wire its because wire is a MUST on the history of rock.
thats my opinion
It appeared on the mid-90's Wire tribute album "Whore". I think the only track on it that I prefer to this one, is Mike Watt's cover of "The 15th".
I had no idea this existed,I love these bands.
Thank you!
