I have the ReCurve R3 and could not be more happy. I found out after watching several videos and from my dealer where I had it installed, that I do not need to use the bar lifting tool. I just use my trailer tongue jack to get the coupler set just right and I just use my hand to place the bars onto the hangers. Yes I did use the tool at first, but my propane tanks are just mounted too close the hangers making using the lift tool a bit difficult. Now that i can just use my hand, no more issues. I guess I have hitched and unhitched 60 or more times on my travels around the country. The only time I need to use the lifting tool is when on very uneven ground to prevents me from raising the trailer tongue where I need it to easily remove the arms. I grease the sway head every time I go out with the trailer. Just a routine along with the other lists of things to do.

it seems to me, following this as stated, will work if you achieve the 1 in. or less on the tow vehicle height, however, if not you would have to loosen up the bolts of the shank/ball hitch and the lower 5/8 bolt to adjust the pitch.... the 5 1/2 turns isnt anything but a good starting point (the instructions say start at level ball pitch) either way, some fine tuning may be required.... i agree with some other comments having a bit more clarity and adjustment for more or less tilt to adjust torsion would be helpful. The instruction manual also states (instead of the initial coupler to ball height adjustment of 1 inch higher) it says aprox 1/8in per 100lbs of tongue weight.

You will see a recent comment from me about two large a pair of spring bars that I am in process of solving. Thank you for the technical input Camco. When I get the new 600 pound spring bars, I will be resetting the unit to my new vehicle which is a ram 2020 1500 limited with the 5.7 hemi engine. There is one possible technical glitch in that the limited comes with four corner air suspension that can change the height of the vehicle. (Lower for easy entry exit; raise for two different heights of off-road travel; something called the Aero mode which will lower the vehicle when going 60 mph or more in order to make a slippery aerodynamic silhouette)
My assumption is that I should disable the air suspension while I set up the Truck for height of the trunnion and proper balancing of the load between axles. I also think this should be done In what they call "normal height" mode. When it goes into the "aero mode" it will lower the vehicle by .6 inches. Is this a problem if I have set the camper to be level with the ball mount on the vehicle in normal height but then the vehicle drops .6 inches? I know we're getting close to rocket science here but these seem to me legitimate questions.. Thanks for your input

I have the R6 and I love it so easy to hook up and to maneuver backing up you disengage sway bar ball bearings. It may cost a little bit more than your average sway bar system but worth every dollar. 😁

Can another video be made showing adjustments?
For instance, install it intentionally outta whack, then show how to correct it. Head angle being off will affect the distribution, as well as change the balls height. Tipping back too far may reduce ball hight by a half inch, when all a guy wants to do is adjust the bar pressure.

Did however have 5k lbs air bags installed on the dodge but never air them up over min 5 PSI with truck not attached. Attached to the 29 foot MAllard UltraLite (6900lbs) the air bags PSI reading went to 17psi. Truck was level and camper pulled AWESOME! Great product!

I have the R3 1000lb spring bars from my old trailer that had a tongue weight of 920lbs and it worked great! Now that I have a new trailer with a tongue weight of 12-1250lbs can I still use the R3-1000lb? I have it hooked up now and have towed 5-6 times with my new to me 2016 F350. It levels the trailer just fine but when I tow the truck bounces and it feels like the trailer pushes my 1 ton truck around giving me a horrible driving experience. Do you think that having only the 1000lb bars would cause this problem? Also is there a 1400lb spring bar and if so would you recommend the 1400 or would a 1200lb be sufficient? My tongue weight could go higher because my trailer gross weight can go up to 9999lbs. thanks

The round-headed bolt inside the hitch that I am to set with a punch came loose on my last trip. Also, the units that hold the ends of the bars on the trailer frame also came loose. Is there a secret to making sure everything stays tight? The main 4 bolts and the trailer frame bar holders were tightened down with a 3/4" Ingersol Rand impact and double-checked for tightness with a 2' long breaker bar.

We drove my brand-new to me Rockwood 25 09S, 2019 1/2 camper home 145 miles yesterday. No major difficulties but it had a recurve R3 weight distributing hitch included and I have had some problems with the hitch. I question whether it was set up properly and I also question whether the spring bars are too stiff. We almost bought this camper in the 2020 model and had a quotation for the R3 included but the sales representative - a very knowledgeable guy - quoted the 600 pound bars. I said the tongue weight might be as much as 700 and he responded that the ride would be much better with the 600 pound bars.
We were severely disappointed with the way the camper porpoised (think a flat stone skipping if porpoising doesn't give an image) and shook going over pavement seams and any kind of moderately rough condition. Very disconcerting and almost certainly indicating a setup problem. I have no problem with my brand-new 2020 ram truck so obviously something is wrong with this set up of the towed camper.
    Three observations:
    1. The 1000 lb bars seem too heavy - maybe they're part or all of the problem?
    2. The retention pin on the passenger side bar can't go into the inboard holes and I just watched the Camco video where that's where the factory guy placed it. The pin strikes the outer surface of the bar pin so it can't go through. I'm suspecting the original owner just used the outboard hole (he put it in and I wasn't watching). Would that allow the bar to slop around when pitching and yawing? Why would the bar pin not go in far enough to allow the saddle clamp to be pinned with the outboard holes?
    3. Original owner had a 2010 Ram 1500 so we didn't change the setup but the trailer was at least 3" high at the nose. I've reversed the trunion receiver and lowered the position but haven't had a chance to check and see if that made a difference.
Any good input or suggestions would be appreciated. Camco ru there? Knowledgeable owners also invited to comment.

    • @CamcoManufacturing

R6 provides adaptive sway control; it automatically applies/removes Sway Control gradually, as needed; as opposed to R3 which is either fully on/rigid, or fully off.
R6 automatically disengages after 10°, making it easier to turn and back up.
And similarly to R3, R6’s Sway Control can be turned off when it’s not desired, and/or in the event of hazardous road conditions (snow, ice, slippery, etc).
The bars are the same for corresponding weight classes. I hope this helps.

I just installed our this weekend and man am I having a hard time getting it to set up correctly and I am not sure what I am doing wrong!! I followed this video to the tee and the instructions that came with it. 2 things I am having trouble with. First, the passenger side mounting bracket seems to be shifting no matter how tight I get them as soon as I back up and take off causing the trunnion to become uneven... I am on perfectly level ground and my tow vehicle was aligned with the travel when setting this up. I almost am having issues getting the tow vehicle to be within that 1 inch of its original measurement. At this point, I do not feel safe traveling down the road with this setup. Any advice? On the hangers. There is an insert which can be flipped 180. Your video shows increased contact surface facing up. In the drawing it seems to indicate that flat surface facing up, except when the hanger is rotated for bottom mount hitch, the drawing indicates the flat surface downward. So the question is, the part was designed and built with that increased surface area however no mention is made as too which way that surface is supposed to face. I've sen other videos where they have the extra surface pointed down and not in contact with the spring bar.............. I'd say the flat goes to meet the spring bar but that is just my best guess......

    • @corry7040
      @corry7040 Год назад

I'm not sure if this addresses your comment. There are 4 holes in one end of the shim (aka "insert") and only 1 hole on the other end of the shim. These "4 holes end" needw to line up with the "4 holes" on both the bracket. Ditto with the "strap" that retains the bracket from the inside of the trailer A-frame. If all of the bolt holes don't line up you are limited with where you can insert the bottom flat-head screw/bolt. This can cause the bracket and strap to "bow". If this happens, parts of the bracket and strap will not make contact on the trailer A-frame and the whole thing can rotate when under pressure. BTW, the shim is placed between the bracket and the A-frame to make sure that only the shim contacts the trailer frame. The shim creates a small gap on either side of the itself which is necessary so the rest of the bracket doesn't touch the frame (which can cause bowing and possible slippage).

Just for shits and giggles, ya might wanna check the front fender hight as well. Ass end goes down, front will come up.... I'm shocked that he never mentions that. It should NOT be higher than the unloaded measurement. (1/4" either way or so is ok, but any higher will cause understeer).
As with every one of these hitches, you may need to play around with head tilt to get a good bar pressure. Tilting back increases bar pressure, tipping forward reduces it. Tipping will also change the ball height, so here we go setting it up, AGAIN.... Using a cat scale with the truck alone, vs after you setup with the trailer, will tell you volumes on where the weight is at.

This information should be in the description, as made evident about questions regarding how much to torque the bolts. BTW, using an impact wrench to set torque is bullsh*t. A 1/2" drive torque wrench capable of 300 ft-lbs costs far less than the Milwaukee gun discussed in the comments below. So in addition to poor information CAMCO has provided mis-information in this video & the comments that they've answered.

    Last question,
Your website shows that the R3 may have been shipped without grease and there is worry that it may have developed slight rust in shipping. Camping World cannot tell me when their's was delivered (the one that I have). How can I tell, without the box (since Camping World already discarded that) what day in April it was shipped?
I already ensured that there is grease in the trunnion, but have no way of knowing if rust already developed on the inside during shipping.
    Thanks,

      Thanks for your question, Derek.
For the R3, adjusting the sway control is easy; It's basically like applying brakes to the sway. The more you tighten the activation bolt the more sway resistance is achieved, and conversely with loosening. How much sway resistance is needed is a matter of personal preference and will vary depending on what's being towed and the road/weather conditions. Does that help any?

    • @corry7040
      @corry7040 Год назад

I believe that the shims between the frame and the hanger bracket are to place all of the pressure on the center of the bracket and not along the "ears" on either side of the shim. The shim forces the center of the bracket to be tightened "flat" against the trailer A-frame. Otherwise the bracket (and possibly the strap on the opposite side of the trailer frame) might "bow" and cause a gap between the bracket and the trailer A-frame. The bracket can then rotate against the a-frame when under pressure (due to lack of surface area contacting the A-frame). If it rotates far enough things can get bent. I myself installed the shim upside down and the hangar bracket rotated soon after we pulled out of the driveway )-; I learned to pay closer attention to the pictures on the DOWNLOADED version of the installation manual (where I could zoom in).

Hey Steve. The Ram 1500 has a great ride and is great for towing. This is due to the coil spring or air ride suspension in the truck. The truck has a steep rake from front to rear and 2 1/2 inches of drop for this truck may not be achievable in relation to how much front lift you get. The most crucial thing to pay attention to when setting up the hitch is the measurements of the RV front coupler to the ground and the top of the ball mount to the ground. I had this set up for a Ford Sport Trac but now have to reset for a F150. Here's the question:
You note to set it to 260 Foot Pounds. I see you're using a Milwaukee Impact driver. I am rather new to all of this but all the impact drivers I am finding are 210, 300, 1400 (especially in the Milwaukee series). I see nothing special about your setup for your impact driver (I'm not seeing any Torque Limiting bars nor am I seeing variable speed on your cordless setup).
So, if I buy an impact drill that is 300 ft/lbs am I safe? Will 300 Ft/Lbs be excessive? What if I bought the 1400 ft/lb Milwaukee (or any other brand) cordless impact drill? Will that hurt?

I can attest that if you go heavy as in my nine-month-old camper was set up with 1000 pound bars which according to this would be worth 1200 pounds, you will be severely disappointed in the way it Tows. A 600lb kit for a 750lb+ tongue weight? (10-15% of trailer weight)
That don't seem right at all....

Why on earth is there 10 washers and various parts to tighten down and lose. You couldn’t make some custom hardware for the hitch? Literally looks like relying on a meccano set for all the adjustment points. Makes it look cheap build quality

Hi, I have a R3 and I lost my lift handle tool. Do you sell it by it self?

This video is terrible! Make a new one with an actual detailed explanation on how to adjust the bars. One should not have to scour the web in search of detailed instructions on how to set this up. I figured it out but my god, seriously.
